Peter Rocco, President, The Medical Center Auxiliary

The Medical Center Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to improve the health of our community.

It is through the passion, dedication and commitment of the volunteer leaders of The Medical Center Foundation's Board of Trustees that Healthy Journey has achieved tremendous success to improve the health of our community. We are truly grateful for their generous gifts of time, talent and resources.

On the cover: The Wilheit-Keys Peace Garden at Northeast Georgia Medical Center – totally funded by a generous gift of The Wilheit-Keys Family.

Jennifer Bagwell, President, The Medical Center Auxiliary

Your Gifts Make a Difference by Jim Moore, Board of Trustees Chairman, The Medical Center Foundation As a Hall County native, my family and I have long relied on Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) for many of life’s expected and unexpected health events -- the birth of our children, emergencies and surgeries, caring for aging parents and end of life experiences with loved ones and friends. I continue to believe a great hospital system helps keep a community strong and growing, and I want members of our donor family to know their contributions play a significant role in helping Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) become Georgia’s most awarded hospital. (See page 13) Your gifts are especially important as NGMC is a community, not-for-profit hospital that receives no local tax payer support. I am pleased to introduce The Medical Center Foundation (TMCF) Annual Donor Report and share shining examples of the impact donations make on improving the health of our community. In 2013, 3,704 donors made more than 55,500 gifts, pledges and planned gifts for a combined total of $3.5 million.

Including our NGMC Braselton friends, I want to thank our loyal donor family and volunteers for their generous support to help TMCF reach $40 million raised since 1999 through the Healthy Journey campaigns. In order to equal the impact of this $40 million in donations, NGHS would have to increase its net operating revenue by more than $1 billion. While this achievement is significant, our healthy journey continues as the needs always outweigh the resources available. I am proud of our community, our hospital and those who partner with TMCF to make a difference in the lives of others. Sincerely,

James H. Moore Chairman

Special Thanks to Our Donors by Nancy Colston, President & Chief Development Officer, The Medical Center Foundation Our organization recently clarified its core values, and deep interdependence is one of the pillars that resonates so clearly with me --- we cannot do what we do without YOU. Reflecting on the past year, The Medical Center Foundation is privileged to partner with so many passionate individuals and organizations who give their time, talents and resources to ensure that the work we do to improve the health of our community will have a lasting impact. Your unique fingerprints are seen in the many projects in and around Northeast Georgia Health System and in our community. Without this crucial involvement from you – our donors, volunteers and friends – we would not have had the success we enjoyed in 2013.

Together we celebrate the past and look forward to our exciting future. Thank you for your contributions that come in a variety of forms – from financial gifts to volunteer gifts of time – we are grateful for each and every one. With grateful appreciation,

Nancy D. Colston President & CDO

Thank you for joining with us to create and excel in providing exceptional health care both in Gainesville and in Braselton. Because of you and your willingness to embrace opportunities to improve community health, our future is bright. www.TheMedicalCenterFoundation.org 1

BEYOND THE BEDSIDE

James Jackson, MD, grew up in a very different Braselton than the one he now serves as a physician at Northeast Georgia Physicians Group Braselton Clinic. The Braselton of his childhood was sparsely populated, and many of the people who called it home made their living as farmers. Today, the area is booming with new businesses, industries and subdivisions now dotting the landscape. It’s an area that touches four counties – Hall, Jackson, Gwinnett and Barrow – and it’s an area to which Dr. Jackson willingly returned. He left to go to medical school and complete a residency in internal medicine at Emory University. Dr. Jackson practiced at the Diagnostic Clinic in Gainesville for 16 years, but, in 2005, he returned to Braselton to practice medicine. He said the construction of North Georgia Health System’s (NGHS) new hospital – Northeast Georgia Medical Center Braselton – will be a boon for the growing region when it opens in Spring 2015. Today, Dr. Jackson sees many patients he knew growing up, but the growth and prosperity brought in a lot of patients who weren’t in the area even just a few years ago. “There’s a significant population that needs services in this area,” Dr. Jackson said. “Once the hospital opens, it will provide convenient access to emergency care, surgery and other advanced services. But there’s already a growing physician community here, including primary care providers and specialists, which means patients don’t have to drive 20 or 30 miles to see their doctor.” As a native of Braselton, Dr. Jackson said he is proud to be a part of the growing, excellent care NGHS brings to his hometown. He also believes he and other physicians should support the work of The Medical Center Foundation as a way to both give back to the community and help ensure the top-quality care continues. 2 www.TheMedicalCenterFoundation.org

“The Foundation supports so many services in our community, such as Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) and Good News Clinics,” Dr. Jackson said. “The funds raised through the Foundation are able to enhance those services, which makes this a much stronger community.” Dr. Jackson said older doctors have told him about the days when cardiac care was first coming to Northeast Georgia, long before the Ronnie Green Heart Center was created at NGMC in Gainesville in 2002. “Cardiac care was pretty new. They were going out to raise money for these services, and the first thing that people would ask is what are the physicians doing to support this effort,” Dr. Jackson said. He understands the question. “People want to make sure we are committed to our practice and to our community. People want to know that we are going to be here and to be accountable. It makes sense that people would want that from their doctors.” Dr. Jackson particularly thinks physicians should support the Foundation as a way to show their commitment. “Our support of the Foundation is a reflection of who we are as a community,” Dr. Jackson said. “It shows what we value. It may be for something that we don’t use every day, but it’s important that it’s there and enhanced by the Foundation. We are part of a great health system here, and the Foundation makes it stronger.” As construction of NGMC Braselton continues, and more people continue to move into the area, Jackson predicts the role NGHS plays in the region will continue to grow in a way that will help shape future generations. “I’m appreciative of what the hospital has allowed me to do as a physician,” Jackson said. “It’s wonderful to be part of something that has such support throughout the community. I think as doctors, we need to truly appreciate that.”

But she 4 www.TheMedicalCenterFoundation.org

wasn’t surprised Hospice was in Archer’s will. “She didn’t participate in a lot of the charities that you hear a lot about,” Reed said. “She was always looking to help those groups that weren’t the obvious ones to help. And Hospice became her favorite.” Reed said Archer’s mother may have set the example for her daughter. The two used to volunteer for a group that helped mentally challenged children. But when Archer’s mother became ill, Archer became her full-time caregiver. “It was during that time that she learned about Hospice,” Reed said. “It was obvious once she started talking about it that she was going to start volunteering. And she did.” Warren said Hospice of NGMC will use the gift to continue to provide the type of services that drew Archer to the organization in the first place. She hopes to add more massage therapy sessions, which are important for patients who aren’t able to get out of bed. She also wants to add more music therapy, which has proven therapeutic for patients with serious illnesses. Warren also added the money will help patients who need help with basic essentials, like keeping the heat and lights on. “Even people who have saved wisely can find they quickly deplete a lot of their resources when they have a serious illness,” Warren said. Archer began volunteering with Hospice of NGMC in 2001. She continued in that role for nearly nine years, until she became ill. At her most active, Archer would be assigned as

many as three patients, and she’d spend up to four hours a week with each one. “Our volunteers play a lot of roles,” Jewell said. “They go into a patient’s home to provide company for the family and give the caretakers a break so they can run errands or just talk to their neighbors. Susan was outstanding at providing that type of support.” Reed said her friend’s desire to help others wasn’t something that just came along later in life. It had always been what motivated her. “She loved her students, and I think they really loved her,” Reed said of the students at Habersham Central High School, where Archer taught English. “She had a unique sense of humor and I think the students really reacted to that.” Once, Archer helped pay for one of her students to attend college. Reed said Archer had described the student as extremely bright, but the family was unable to afford the tuition. “So she handled it, without any fanfare at all. That’s just the way she did things,” Reed said. Warren is grateful for Archer’s generosity in death, saying gifts of any size are important for Hospice to continue its work. “Our success depends on gifts from our community,” she said. “It would be hard to continue without them. Gifts to Hospice really help make the quality of life so much better for someone at the end of their life, and it means so much to the families as well.”

Firm

Belief in Giving Back

The Gainesville law firm of Whelchel, Dunlap, Jarrard and Walker has a storied history of community support that dates back to the days of Edgar B. Dunlap, one of the firm’s early partners. Dunlap was very community oriented, devoting countless hours to organizations that helped make Gainesville a better place to live. One of his favorite organizations was the local hospital, then called Hall County Hospital. “Mr. Dunlap believed in the hospital and helping it grow,” said Tom Cole, managing partner of the firm. “He always said one of the best things we can do as a community is support the hospital.” Today, Whelchel, Dunlap, Jarrard and Walker continues its support of community activities, chief among them support of the hospital, today known as Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC). “We don’t really do a lot of donating as a firm,” Cole said. “We look to individuals within the firm to do that. But the hospital and the Foundation are among the very few exceptions. These are excellent places to spend our charitable dollars.” Cole said supporting NGMC became easy for him after he attended the Medical Center Open, a golf tournament sponsored by The Medical Center Foundation. Proceeds from the annual event have helped countless community organizations such as Good News Dental Clinics, Challenged Child and Friends, Gateway Domestic Violence Center and the Georgia Mountain Food Bank, just to name a few. “I’m moved to tears when I see where this money is going, and it’s all going back into our community,” Cole said. “A hundred thousand, two hundred thousand is real money for these groups. The Medical Center Foundation is obviously an organization that is doing good things.” Cole said he and others at the law firm feel led to philanthropic efforts because of the servant leadership provided by Dunlap and other predecessors in the firm.

“We feel like it is an important thing that we are doing,” Cole said. “We all live here, and we want to have a good place to live and raise our kids. We want to support those things that can make this a better community for everyone.” Cole said he hopes other businesses and individuals will consider supporting the Foundation. He believes the Foundation is a strong entity that uses all the gifts it receives for good works. “If you look at the list of who the other donors are, you will see a wide range of all kinds of people from across our community,” he said. “They all want their money spent in a positive way. Then look at a listing of where that money goes and you see that the community is a better place because of your generosity.” Cole also believes the Foundation is worthy of financial support because of the reputation it has earned over the years. “When you look at the people who are running the Foundation, you see a lot of people with impeccable reputations,” he said. “A lot of trust and faith has been put into those people who are raising funds, and you can feel comfortable knowing that they are spending the money well.” Cole said he is proud of the support his firm offers the Foundation. “When I look at all the organizations it helps and the lives it touches, it becomes something that you can really feel good about.”

The Medical Center Open Celebrates RECORD

YEAR!

The Annual Medical Center Open has become a tradition not to be missed for golfers in Northeast Georgia. It was standing room only in the packed tent for the 19th Hole Reception as co-chairs, Martha Nesbitt, PhD, and Michael Callahan, MD, unveiled the giant check and announced that the 2013 Open set a new fundraising record. Golfers, sponsors and volunteers alike cheered as $238,550 was presented to Northeast Georgia Speech Center, far exceeding the event’s $175,000 goal. Thanks to Bank of America Merrill Lynch’s premier sponsorship and McGarity's Business Products/Xerox Corporation's 19th Hole Reception sponsorship, 100% of tournament proceeds will allow the Speech Center to improve quality of life for children with speech and hearing challenges by helping them communicate more effectively. Philip Wilheit, Jr., Sam Hulsey, Cliff Oliver and Jason Brian with the Wilheit Packaging team (shown below) took home the big prize by winning the Woody Stewart Trophy with the lowest gross score.

More than $2.7 million has been given to support community health improvement projects within our community through the Open.

Tri-chairs Kristin Daniel, Emily Embry and Ellen Toms and more than 160 volunteers shared their incredible talent and many hours of service to make this holiday shopping event a grand success. More than 70 merchants from eight states were on-hand with their wares to tempt shoppers getting an early jump on their holiday gift purchases. Willis Investment Counsel led the way by partnering with The Medical Center Auxiliary for the fifth consecutive year as the presenting sponsor and was joined by 30 additional community sponsors.

Accidental injuries are the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the United States. Safe Kids Gainesville/Hall County has been leading the battle locally against preventable childhood injuries since 1992.

Lighting of the

2013 Love Light Tree The Medical Center Auxiliary’s 34th Annual Love Light Celebration was held on Monday evening, December 2, in the Medical Center’s North Entrance Rotunda due to a cold, rainy night. Despite the uncooperative weather, it certainly was a heart-warming evening! Musical groups from Enota Elementary, North Hall Middle and Flowery Branch High Schools, along with soloist Heather Farr, delighted the audience with their performances. Guests were able to see the beautiful Love Light Tree in the Auxiliary’s Love Light Garden as they left the campus, and it was enjoyed by all who visited the campus during the holidays. Love Light donations benefiting Hospice of Northeast Georgia Medical Center are accepted throughout the year and are truly appreciated for the difference they make in the lives of terminally ill patients of all ages. Gifts to Love Light totaled $180,537, including an $82,000 estate gift from an anonymous dear friend. Special thanks to Dr. Ricky and LeeAnn LoCicero for their outstanding leadership as 2012 and 2013 Love Light Chairs (pictured below).

The

Popegarden Family Expectant parents, siblings and family members anxiously awaiting the arrival of their newborn child now have the pleasure of retreating to the beautiful Pope Family Garden, located in the South Tower off the main lobby of the Women & Children’s Pavilion. Dedicated October 28, 2013, the garden is made possible and totally funded by a generous signature gift to The Medical Center Foundation by long-time hospital supporters Richard and Lona Pope and their family (pictured right). The Popes’ gift creates a very special legacy and also encourages their family to continue the spirit of volunteerism in the same place Richard’s parents served for 60 years. Beginning in the late 1950’s, Richard’s father, the late Ralph Pope, served on the Hospital Authority, and his mother, the late Ocie Rich Pope, worked as a nurse and at one time acting administrator of Hall County Hospital. “Mrs. Ocie,” as she was affectionately known, was the motivating force behind the establishment of the Hall School of Nursing, which is now the Brenau University Nursing School. Today, Richard and Lona are life members of The Medical Center Auxiliary and serve as trustees of

The Pope Family The Medical Center Foundation. The Pope Family Garden is one of six therapeutic landscapes on the NGMC Gainesville campus (The Auxiliary Patio Garden, Anne’s Garden, The Auxiliary Love Light Garden, Wilheit-Keys Peace Garden and Nell’s Prayer Garden), which have been completely funded through philanthropy. Each garden has a tremendous impact on the Medical Center’s ability to provide destinations of hope and healing as well as stress-reducing environments for patients, their families, visitors and staff.

Trellis Society Members See Emergency Heart Care

Up-Close

Members of The Trellis Society, The Medical Center Foundation’s Annual Giving Club, recently participated in a VIP Behind the Scenes Look at emergency heart care. Participants were given an opportunity to see what happens when a person has a heart attack, from the moment they first experience symptoms to when they receive life-saving care at Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Tom Edwards, director of Heart and Vascular Services, shared the importance of performing chest compressions at the scene. He explained how information is relayed by Emergency Medical Technicians to medical personnel at the Medical Center, so the cardiac team is in place and cardiac intervention begins the instant the patient arrives. Edwards thanked Trellis Society members for their support of The Medical Center Foundation through their annual gifts, reminding members that The Ronnie Green Heart Center expansion was funded in part by their donations.

At right: Trellis Society Co-Chairs Laurie and Bo Weber shared their family’s personal experience with the Ronnie Green Heart Center. Laurie suffered heart failure following their son’s birth. They attribute her positive outcome to the excellent care she received at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
