75 YEARS OF LIVE ENTERTAINMENT IN CARTERET COUNTY

Since its founding, the Carteret Community Theatre (CCT) has brought the Crystal Coast community together for hundreds of musicals, children’s shows, comedies, tragedies, and even radio dramas produced by volunteers and other groups.

As only art can, this organization has helped us to see beyond our own perspective; and whether we were laughing uncontrollably in unison with our neighbors or silently moved by a violin solo, the Carteret Community Theatre has helped us realize we are not alone. This local treasure has built confidence in our youth, nurtured previously undiscovered talents and enriched the Crystal Coast in a way that invests in the people who make ours a great place to live and flourish.

Performances have included:

• Theater: Nunsense, Rent

• Concerts: Beach Music, Rock, Country, and Motown

• Stand-Up Comedy

• Magic Shows

• Charlotte Opera

• National Shakespeare Company

• Missoula Children’s Theatre Company

A NEW VISION BORN FROM DISASTER

In September of 2018, Hurricane Florence damaged the 1960’s era movie house that had been transformed into a theater for live entertainment on Arendell Street in Downtown Morehead City. Since then, all CCT performances and programs have been conducted at a variety of venues in the area, thanks to many collaborative partners.

Prior to Hurricane Florence, the theater averaged one live performance each month. Live performances, especially theater productions, require space and sets. With no permanent

home, CCT has faced a major challenge finding locations with the required number of seats, space for sets, lighting, and sound equipment. The community deserves a permanent home for the Arts.

CCT volunteers and board members took a step back and developed plans for an expanded, refurbished space for ALL Art forms: The Crystal Coast Center for the Arts. The Center for the Arts will be on the site of the current theater. CCT owns the theater outright.

THE SHOW CONTINUES

CCT has not been deterred by the lack of a permanent theater. As soon as possible (after the 2018 hurricane and COVID), volunteers identified temporary sites for rehearsals, performances, and summer theater camps. 2022 was CCT’s best year ever…but there was still no permanent home.

ANCILLARY ECONOMIC BENEFITS

CCT’s entertainment (and other live performances) are fun and they have a positive economic impact. For years, CCT’s live performances have drawn audiences to Downtown Morehead. Longtime support from local businesses, churches, educational institutions, and civic organizations supported a symbiotic relationship between the Arts and downtown business success. Show attendees will often spend time at a local restaurant after the show or stay in a local hotel. CCT shows bring more people to our growing downtown.

Prior to Hurricane Florence (2018), each live performance at the theater had average income of more than $12,000.

Every performance in 2022 was sold out...approximately 4,000 tickets. We need room to grow! And the Crystal Coast Center for the Arts will provide the space for a wider variety of performances and art shows.

ARTS PROGRAMMING FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH

• Artists from the Missoula Children’s Theatre annually work with children and youth in a one-week theater experience.

• For the past ten years, CCT has conducted annual one-week summer camps for children and youth. Summer camps culminate in performances for friends and family and emphasize self-esteem, public speaking, and confidence building activities. More than 500 campers and 15 counselors-in-training participated in the summer drama camp.

• In 2021, CCT established First Act, a youth-led theater program that produces and staffs its own shows, under CCT adult volunteer supervision.

Design to Accommodate Many
