[adjective]: causing astonishment, great wonder or surprise. Startlingly impressive.

Amazing Commitment We strive to adapt as community needs change while remaining true to our mission to Preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in His name without discrimination.

“The families who will be coming here will be under the stress of the effects of poverty, among other factors. Having a clean, attractive and secure dining area opening onto a protected courtyard with kid-friendly play environment will help make their stay a good experience for all. The design will enable better changes to begin for the residents as families.” – Neil Clark, Architect

Homeless families lack appropriate emergency housing No homeless parent wants their child away from family in a room with strangers. For some, this is the only option because we do not have enough emergency housing capacity in Columbus. The situation is especially dire for homeless families with children age 12 and older. The Salvation Army wants to be part of the solution but our dated Second Avenue shelter space is not designed to

meet this urgent community need. Not waiting on a new building, The Salvation Army was the first organization in the Chattahoochee Valley to work with Home for Good to launch a program to house homeless families in local hotels and motels in August 2019. In 2021, we provided transformative emergency housing for 389 parents and children. A longer-term solution is needed.

Amazing Good!

Amazing Solution The Salvation Army has a three-step plan to comprehensively address this vital community need.

$8.5 million is needed to build a new Center of Hope:

1

Construct a new Second Avenue facility that increases emergency shelter capacity for homeless families. The new Center of Hope will have the capacity to safely house homeless families. The new Center of Hope will have 17 family rooms on the second floor. These living spaces, much like a hotel room, will provide living spaces to provide a measure of both privacy and opportunities for communitybuilding. An industrial kitchen will allow for more efficient meal preparation for Center of Hope residents and the community, and the computer lab, outdoor garden and playground space will give residents of all ages places for respite, recreation and learning opportunities.

2

Expand and enhance the Pathway of Hope initiative to end intergenerational poverty. Private office space will provide a confidential setting for Salvation Army caseworkers to come alongside Center of Hope residents and others in the Chattahoochee Valley who yearn to breaking free of the chains of poverty for themselves and their family.

3

Use The Salvation Army Corn Center programs to holistically serve families. Our thriving children’s afterschool and summer camp programs, performing arts program for children and adults, along with weekly worship and fellowship opportunities at the Corn Center on Warm Springs Road will be a huge benefit for homeless children and their parents.

Amazing Plans The stark contrast of increasing prosperity and abject poverty is visible on Second Avenue, a main entry into Uptown and home to agencies that provide services to the homeless and others in need. Amidst the renewal and revitalization around it, The Salvation Army’s current facility at 1718 Second Avenue (the corner of 2nd and 18th) has been operating, often 24 hours a day, since 1950. It is rundown and unequipped to properly offer the range of services needed by our community. The 1.5 acre campus is in need of a major overhaul. Demolition and rebuilding a new, modern building presents a an exciting opportunity to develop a facility that will: • Most importantly, be designed specifically to shelter homeless families – an urgent community need • Include some of the latest advances in design and efficiency, allowing for future operational sustainability • Replace a community eyesore with a modern, attractive campus that enhances the surrounding neighborhood and encourages future revitalization along the Second Avenue corridor

The current campus consists of a 9,084 square foot building and another vacant structure. The new Center of Hope facility will be 21,260 square feet.

The new Center of Hope will have 17 family rooms.

Amazing Support

What is Pathway of Hope? The Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope initiative provides individualized services to families with children who desire to take action to break the cycle of crisis and vulnerability that repeats generation after generation. It seeks to address the root causes of poverty in addition to The Army’s history of compassionate serving. By helping families overcome challenges like unemployment, unstable housing, and lack of education, The Salvation Army and collaborative partners can guide families toward increased stability and, ultimately, self-sufficiency.

For 125 years, The Salvation Army has been a vital part of the Chattahoochee Valley.
