an all-day event taking place at Queen Elizabeth Secondary (9457 King George Blvd.) on May 26, with the morning geared toward parents and an afternoon session for youth. Parents will hear from Eileen Mohan about the life and legacy of her son Chris, who was one of six people killed in a Surrey highrise in October 2007. Chris and another man, Ed Schellenberg, were innocent victims caught in the middle of a gang hit. Police believe the pair were murdered because the killers didn’t want any witnesses to the other four shootings. “I want Christopher’s legacy to be looked on
as, ‘This should never happen again. Innocent life should never be taken. You must always choose life before death’,” said Mohan. “Through a horrible and very tragic situation, we have a group of people who have come together to empower youth and to show the community that when we put our minds together, good things will result.” The forum will also feature Supt. ago, and since March 2010, he’s been, as he says, “a professional barbecue guy.” Two years ago, Misko quit his software job and began focusing on professional barbecuing. He began entering competitions and winning awards. “In every competition we’ve won at least one award, if not many,” he said. “Grand championships and championships and things like that.” One of the aspects of grilling that drew Misko to slow-cooked barbecuing is the “overwhelming flavour experience.” “That’s one of the things that really struck me. There’s nothing that’s really subtle about it,” he said. “It just kind of smacks you around and you say, ‘damn this is good’.” Misko’s next competition is close to home. The first-ever Cloverdale Cowboy Cook-off is set to heat up May 19 and 20, as part of the annual Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair, which runs from May 18-21. More than 25 different teams will compete for $10,000 is cash prizes at the cook-off. The competition begins Saturday afternoon (May 19) with a pie and chili contest at 1 p.m. Next is an Iron Chef-style contest, Battle Bacon at 4 p.m. Each team is given Brian Misko five pounds of bacon to make whatever they want, as long as the feature ingredient is bacon. Teams begin cooking meat for Sunday’s Cloverdale Cowboy Cook-off after Battle Bacon, as some meats will be cooked for 12-16 hours. The teams will then turn in different meat entries to be judged every hour, on the hour, beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday (May 20). At 5 p.m., the dishes are submitted to the judges for evaluation. After the teams have submitted their food, they will pass out samples to the public. Awards for the winning chefs will follow. The process, Misko says, can be intimidating, because you don’t really know what the judges are thinking. “You’re just hoping for the best,” he said. “Any given Sunday, you can have a good day or you can have a bad day. What’s in a name?

arc Dalton, MLA for Maple Ridge-Mission, thinks his party, the B.C. Liberals, should change its name. He says the name – in place since the provincial Liberals formed in 1991 (and the one voters have elected to govern three consecutive terms) – is confusing to some centre-right voters, now that the B.C. Conservatives have surged to solid third-party status. He says those who are federal Conservatives will have a hard time voting B.C. Liberal next time. Last month, the NDP won two B.C. byelections, in ChilliwackHope and Port Moody-Coquitlam. The Liberals came second in both, the Conservatives third. The Liberals fear more vote splitting in the May 2013 provincial election. But changing the party’s name won’t prevent that. Doing so would seem even more confusing to voters, which may be the point. It’s easy to see why the Liberals would want to rebrand the party, distance itself from past scandals and failures, and try to reverse falling popularity. But whatever the Liberals come up with – the B.C. Alliance Party is being floated about – it’s still the same cast of characters who brought you the B.C. Rail and HST fiascoes. Whether or not Surrey-Cloverdale MLA Kevin Falcon and other cabinet ministers run again isn’t going to change that. And changing the party’s name, to something more progressive, won’t erase the past, or fool many. B.C. doesn’t need a new centre-right party – it already has two. The B.C. Conservatives beat the Liberals to the punch. Trying to decide between the two is what’s confusing. Are the Liberals about families or business? A tiger can’t change its stripes. Changing the party’s name is just painting over them. As long as the B.C. Conservatives are around, the right will be split. And that’s what the NDP is counting on. – Black Press

he B.C. government has rolled out its plan to reform BC Ferries, continuing the structural and cultural shift that started when the Crown corporation was quasi-privatized in the early years of B.C. Liberal rule. Politically, there is a lot at stake here. Premier Christy Clark’s year-long “families first” routine boils down to two projects, reining in rate increases at BC Hydro and BC Ferries. For weeks, Transportation Minister Blair Lekstrom has been signalling there is bad news to come. Sparring with the NDP in question period, he has bluntly and repeatedly said the days of fully staffed vessels sailing with a third (or less) of their capacity are coming to an end. Tabling legislation to give the ferry commissioner new powers over service levels as well as fares, Lekstrom revealed $80 million worth of sugar to help the tough medicine go down over the next four years. On a map, it’s clear this would have been the shortest route. Harvey says it would have cut travel time by half, and likely replaced the congested Horseshoe Bay dock. But Barrett would have had to tell his Nanaimo ferry union supporters that they were losing half their work hours. Tsawwassen to Duke Point is 65 km, compared to 54 km from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay. A ferry worker’s shift includes two round trips and loading time. On the Duke Point run this meant at least eight and a half hours, “thus ensuring the crew at least one hour at double time daily and often more,” Harvey writes. “Later it became a scheduled overtime route.” Something to keep in mind as Adrian Dix and his crew of union bosses prepare to take the helm.

Weighing Oil spill clean-up costs overblown future options I COMMEND the Black Press team
A YEAR FROM NOW, in May 2013, the voters of B.C. will be faced with a very different question than the question faced by voters in the recent by-elections. The question in play in the byelections was basically: “I agree with a lot of what the B.C. Liberal government has done over the years, but I’m angry about one or two things they’ve done, so I’m not going to vote for them this time.” Since by-election results don’t usually result in a change in government (and didn’t in this case), the risk in not voting for the B.C. Liberals was very low. Almost nonexistent. However, a year from now, in May 2013, the stakes will be much higher and voters will be faced with a very different question: Namely, “Do I really want an NDP government back in charge of B.C.’s economy?” That’s when the rubber is going to have to meet the road and voters are going to have to get serious about B.C.’s future. I, for one, do not want an NDP government in charge of B.C.’s economy. And anyone who feels the same way needs to start working now to make sure that doesn’t happen a year from now.

Unfortunately, the second part examining the effects of a spill contained numerous unchallenged errors. Firstly, Rex Weyler’s claim that bitumen hitting the water separates into gases and creates a toxic cloud is sheer fiction. If he meant diluted bitumen (“dilbit”), it is still a misleading statement, in my opinion. Some of the light diluent will evaporate, but it is harmful only if people stay in the area downwind for some time. Over a few days, the fumes dis-
sipate. Like table salt, which is toxic above certain limits, it’s all about the dose. As to the threat of toluene and benzene, their concentration in dilbit is less than one per cent, or one-30th of that in the gasoline you pour into your lawn mower. The oil sinks to the bottom, Weyler claims. Some heavy crudes such as Mexican Maya may sink to the bottom of a fresh-water body, but typical Canadian bitumen should not in either fresh water (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conclusion) or especially in our denser salt water. However, the final result depends on the crudes shipped, and a turbulent fresh water river
could cause such problems. Mr. Weyler says he based his $40 -billion number for an oil spill clean-up “here” by comparing our situation to somebody’s estimated $50-billion clean-up cost for the BP offshore oil rig blowout in the Gulf of Mexico. He might as well compare it to the cost of a space shuttle flight; it’s apples and oranges. First, there have been serious blowouts on oil platforms; in a century of tankers in B.C. waters there has never been a major spill, even in the half century before radar, electronic depth finders, GPS, tethered tugs,

No guarantee of customers for a TFN shopping mall SUPPOSE THE Tsawwassen
First Nation built a shopping mall and no one came, what then? Cutting through the hype and hoopla of the proposed TFN mall, one question remains unanswered: Where are the masses of shoppers coming from to support the new TFN mall? Why would Richmond or Surrey shoppers come to the end of Delta to shop here? The answer is, they would not. More and more the proposed TFN mall looks like a Ponzi scheme, with the shopping mall being used as bait to force Delta taxpayers to fund tens of millions of dol-
lars in local road improvements to ensure more and larger roads, not to service the shopping mall, but instead servicing housing developments on ALR lands. Already, farmlands are being assembled by developers hoping the provincial government will take the farmland out of the ALR. The cost of the new roads for the supposed TFN shopping mall are a lure for Delta council to support new housing developments, to create a larger tax base to fund expensive road construction. What should be of great concern to Delta taxpayers is whether or not the TFN is going to fund road improve-
ments in Delta. If the answer is no, then Delta council should not consider any extra road improvements at all and let the ensuing gridlock on choked roads starve the new shopping mall of its muchneeded customers. The lack of real transportation planning and the lack of real public consultation, certainly point to some sort of provincial flim-flam trying to get precious farmlands out of the ALR, and Delta council should not even consider playing the provincial game. Even Exxon Valdez, a tanker carrying twice the load of our Aframax tankers, which hit a reef at 18 knots and ruptured eight of 11 tanks, cost “only” $4.3 billion for clean-up and compensation (excluding punitive damages) in an extremely cold and remote area with no initial clean-up capability. Colleen Doucette of The Oiled Wildlife Society of B.C. claims there are no laws forcing oil spillers to respond to oiled wildlife. This is a half truth. The Environment Canada website for the 1990 “National Policy on Oiled Birds” allows the Canadian Wildlife Service to take over oiled bird operations if the polluter is not doing an adequate job, charge them the costs of clean-up, investigate the incident, and take legal action. Lastly, the unidentified person who commented that the port has handled oil tanker traffic for more than 50 years is half right. Making a positive change in your surroundings is the first step to show that you care about your community. A number of businesses in Downtown Surrey have made this step. After several meetings to identify ways members of the community could work together to make a difference, a community clean-up has been planned. The first clean-up will focus on the north end of the DSBIA area. Various groups and businesses have stepped forward to assist in putting on the event. Charan Sethi from Tien Sher Group of Companies offered to supply t-shirts for all the participants. The North Surrey Lions Club will be providing a barbecue for the volunteers. The City of Surrey will be providing litter pickers and garbage bags. SFU students, NightShift Ministries, Fraser Heights Leos Club, and Surrey Food Bank are just a few of the volunteer groups that will be participating. The Board of Directors of the Downtown Surrey BIA will also be represented at the community clean-up and members of the RCMP will be on hand to help out. Strengthening community ties is as important as cleaning up the area. But cleaning up the area is a good place to start. There is lots of room for other members of the community to participate. Maurice and Pauline Stiles celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on April 30 and say when it comes to sticking it out together, a sense of humour helps. The couple met in 1943 when Pauline was visiting her sister in Vancouver. Maurice lived next door. Pauline remembers Maurice walking her home after work each night before they were married. “We didn’t have cars back then,” she said. “Didn’t have money either,” Maurice replied. “When I was courting her, I earned $5.97 a week.” The pair can’t quite remember how Maurice proposed, but Pauline does recall receiving the ring on Christmas Day in 1945. Three years later, in 1948, she and Maurice were married. For their honeymoon, the Stiles’ were supposed to stay in a bridal suite in Edmonton after visiting with Pauline’s brother from Lacombe. However, because of flooding in the area at the time, her brother was unable to return home and took the bridal suite instead.

Maurice and Pauline Stiles were married on April 30, 1948. So the Stiles’ stayed on Pauline’s parent’s farm for their honeymoon. “Bad timing,” Maurice said. After their marriage, Maurice joined the Vancouver Fire Department in 1951 and in 1986, he left his post as the district fire chief. He was only chief of the fire department, not at home, Pauline is quick to point out. During their 64 years of marriage, the Stiles’ have presided over a large family – three children, five grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. “Chistmas is a terrible time,” Pauline jokes. After marking their wedding anniversary at the end of April, the Stiles’ are gearing up for a busy month of even more celebrations.
“There’s six birthdays in May,” said Pauline. “Yeah, this is a bad month, we like to get May over with,” said Maurice. “Her birthday is in May too.” Pauline recalls the 30 cruises the couple have enjoyed over the years, three of which they took with their entire family. Maurice also has fond memories of their vacations, but feels the couple had more fun during the times they were struggling. “As years went by, and the money was more plentiful, I don’t think the enjoyment was the same,” he said. The Stiles are hopeful they’ll make it to their 65th anniversary. “Maybe the kids will finally break down and pay for the party,” Maurice said.

There was no turning back. The U.S border guard of four years calls the activity “a high-speed adrenaline rush” and a refreshing departure from his day job guarding the 49th parallel. “I use it as my stress relief,” Wilder said in an interview with The Leader. Wilder and a team of four other Washington residents called the Pacific Northwest Ponies are heading here for the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair May 18-21. For his first year in Cloverdale Wilder is trying out a new costume: full gladiator gear, right down to the sandals. How he’ll stay in the chariot wearing only sandals, he’s not sure. “I’ll just have to see how that works out,” he says. As to how a chariot rider wins the two-lap event, Wilder says a lot of it is luck of the draw. “There really is no trick,” Wilder says. “Just get a good start at the starting line.” Chariot racing takes place on Friday (May18), with smaller shows throughout the weekend. Friday will feature a free drive, Wilder says, where they just let the horses run. It’s the fastest race and someone is sure to take a spill, he assures. “It’s a fun time. If you’re looking for the most bang for your buck, it’s Friday.” That said, the chariots will be busting loose periodically through the weekend at the rodeo pit. first quarter of the B.C. Premier Baseball League season, the Whalley Chiefs are starting to put together some victories. Two wins in four games last week wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough to lift the 3-13 (won-lost) Chiefs out of the basement in the 18-and-under league, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an improvement on the 1-11 record the team put together over the first 12 games of the 48-game season. The Chiefs ended a long 10-game losing streak by dumping North Delta 4-1 at Whalley Stadium Friday night. Gage McLaren was the winning pitcher, pitching five and two-thirds shutout innings, allowing just four walks and a pair of hits. Hayden Malcolm drove in two runs with a third inning double. Jordan McComb was two-for-four with one RBI and one run scored.
The Blue Jays visit the Chiefs again tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6:30 p.m. in Whalley Stadium, the next game for both teams. The win came after the Chiefs dropped their 10th consecutive contest, an 11-1 setback on the road against the Langley Blaze in a contest that lasted just five innings. The Blaze rocked three Whalley pitchers for 14 hits, four of them for extra bases. The Chiefs then split two games in New Westminster against the Vancouver Cannons, winning the first game 4-1 before getting blanked 3-0 in the second. Brendan Lim went the distance to get the win in game one, allowing just three hits and a walk while collecting five strikeouts. All the offence came in the third inning. Hayden Malcolm and Braeden Allemann were credited with RBIs when hit by a pitch with bases loaded on consecutive
