Leaders lose to Devils

Seaquam, PaciďŹ c Academy unbeaten at B.C. tournaments

Provincial champions by Rick Kupchuk A PAIR OF local high school volleyball teams have won provincial championship tournaments. The Seaquam Seahawks followed up a Fraser Valley championship with a B.C. Senior AAA title in Parksville, while the Pacific Academy Breakers took the Senior AA crown in Vancouver. Kira Tome of the Seahawks took tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) honours in Parksville, while teammates Nicola Etter was a first team all-star. Kelsey Dang and Carley Flemmer were second team selections. The Seahawks swept all three matches in pool play Thursday, not losing a set. Two more victories Friday sent them into the final four on Saturday, where after a tough four-set win over McRoberts (21-25, 25-7, 25-21, 25-14) in a semifinal, they topped Crofton Heights in straight sets in the championship contest. The Clayton Heights Nightriders almost made it an all-Fraser Valley final, losing their semifinal 3-2 to Crofton Heights. The Nightriders then claimed the bronze medal with a two-set sweep of McRoberts in a match for third place. Breanna Evoy of Clayton Heights was a first team all-star, with Tonya Gulbrandsen a second team choice. Pacific Academy was also undefeated through their championship winning, losing just one set in pool play Thursday before winning four straight playoff games. have found that level of confidence head coach Grant Armstrong was looking for. “Consistency comes from confidence, he said two weeks ago. “Once we get some confidence, we’ll go on a roll. The Devils are on a bit of a roll, having knocked off the Pacific International Hockey League’s two conference leaders last week for their fourth win in five games. North Delta upset the Richmond Sockeyes 6-4 on the road Thursday night, then dropped the Aldergrove Kodiaks 4-1 at home in the Sungod Arena on Saturday. The win in Richmond was the most impressive of North Delta’s 10 victories this season, as it came against a team which had won 20 of its previous 21 contests while atop the Tom Shaw Conference, and had conceded just 22 goals. But Stephen Campbell and Jacob Wensley netted two goals each, and Colin Catchpole and Stefan Burzan added singles. Harry Fredemen got the win in the North Delta goal, turning aside 38 of 42 Sockeyes shots. Julius Ho and Adam Nishi contributed with a pair of assists. The Kodiaks are in first place in the Harold Brittainn Conference, but after scoring less than two minutes into Saturday’s game, were held scoreless the reast of the way. Burzan’s powerplay goal tied the contest before the first period was over, then Catchpole scored the winner early in the second frame before assisting on insurance goals by Julius Ho while shothanded and Christian Rodriguez on the powerplay. Fredeman was again steady in goal, making 35 saves.
