FROM BONJOUR TO ADEUS: THE EUROPEAN LEG START HERE: We are gathered here today to talk about the European leg of the 2014 ASP World Championship Tour. Two events. Two countries. Two champions. Four-thousand coffees and three-hundred bottles of wine. All up, five weeks of new life were injected into the old world. It was anchored by…

THE QUIKSI LV E R PR O FR ANCE Oh, Hossegor. Waves, wonders and every French cliché you’ve ever heard. People drank wine and they drank it while gnawing on long, slender loaves of bread. Women were kissed on both cheeks upon greeting and often times, they were unadorned north of the belly button. There was a little party, a lot of pastry and enough good sandbars to keep everyone’s arms tired. The waves for the event were tailored for high-performance surfing in the beginning and barrel riding in the end. There was a little bit of everything in between.

AN D THE MOC HE R IP C UR L P RO P ORTUGA L Peniche is a proud and pungent sardine city, and when the wind blows the wrong way your nose will know. And after Round 1 in fun surf at Supertubos, the wind blew the wrong way for a chunk of days and brought with it the scent of a million dead fish. But that sardine wind blew offshore on the other side of the peninsula, and that chunk of lay days produced some of the finest freesurfing of the year. Just not the most aromatic. When the winds switched back, Supertubos lived up to its hyperbolic name.

There was a week between the Quik Pro France and Moche Rip Curl Pro Portugal. A lot of people went to the Billabong Pro in Cascais — an event on the Prime tour, which becomes suddenly important as the I could fall off tour realizations start to seep into a bubbler-dweller’s brain. Some stayed in France and scored an amazing freesurf, then went straight to Peniche.

Kelly Slater landed a 540 (you’ve seen it), Kolohe Andino got the best wave of his life (you’ll see it soon) and CJ Hobgood sliced his foot open (send him your condolences).

A N D W HAT A BO U T T H E WO R L D T I TLE RAC E ?

It came in like a textbook and out like a Steven King novel. As we headed to Europe, it appeared as though Gabriel Medina had Brazil’s first World Title all but won — he was even followed around Portugal by a slew of non-surf related Brazilian journalists. But as we left, it was a mystery. Brett Simpson took Gabriel out in Round 3 in Peniche. Then Kelly Slater lost to Aritz Aranburu in the next heat. Then Mick Fanning won. And now, it’s headed to Pipe as a three-horse race.
