ON BEHALF OF THE NATIONAL SCHOLASTIC SURFING ASSOCIATION, I AM PLEASED TO WELCOME YOU TO THE 38TH ANNUAL NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN HUNTINGTON BEACH SURF CITY, USA. Since its inception in 1978, the Nationals has become the major platform for young surfers to showcase their skills to the nation and the world. The event is also used as a vehicle for promoting education and high scholastic achievement. All surfers competing in the Nationals must maintain the required academic standards. Furthermore, all competitors who earn a 3.5 GPA are recognized for their accomplishments and dedication to superior academic standards. After winning National titles, many of our surfers are inspired to pursue professional surfing careers and the success stories are abundant. Rob Machado, Taylor Knox, Kalani Robb, Andy Irons, CJ and Damien Hobgood, Fred Patacchia, Nat Young, John John Florence, Kolohe Andino, Carissa Moore, Courtney Conlogue and Lakey Peterson are among the famous names that have enjoyed tremendous success in the major leagues after graduating with National Championship victories. Special thanks to Body Glove, SURFING Magazine, Huntington Surf and Sport and Sex Wax for supporting the NSSA surfing programs on all levels. You have

I would also like to thank all the parents, families and surfing fans for coming out to the Nationals. You will be treated to incredible and exciting surfing performances at the highest level from the best young surfers in the country. You might even witness history being made! To all surfers competing, I wish you success in displaying your abilities to the fullest in surfing’s most infamous world renowned stadium on the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. This stage breeds hugeness…it’s the arena where champions are made. Enjoy your experience because the Nationals will create memories of a lifetime. I look forward to seeing everyone in HB! —JANICE ARAGON, NSSA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

JOSH MONIZ 2014 Open Mens Champion Since claiming the 2014 NSSA Open Mens National Championship, Josh Moniz has been on a tear: He’s won a Pro Junior at Pipe and a ‘QS 3000 in Martinique, which vaulted him into the top 32 on the ‘QS rankings. Not to mention he’s already an ISA world champion. That’s an impressive campaign for a kid barely old enough to buy a lottery ticket. With this kind of continued success, maybe Josh should try playing the Mega Millions. Here’s what Josh had to say one year removed from his first major NSSA victory. SURFING: What did your NSSA career mean to you? Josh Moniz: It meant a lot. I didn’t really win too much before last year. It was the first time I won a national title, so it was pretty cool to win in my final season. It was a huge confidence boost, which is great now that I’m going on to do the ‘QS events. What was it like having your brother [Seth Moniz] in the final with you? It was pretty cool. We’ve surfed so many heats together, so we’re kinda used to it. I was nervous, though; I thought he would beat me [laughs]. He beats me a lot, so I was psyched to get this one. You won the ‘QS in Martinique, which put you at 32nd on the ‘QS. Are you looking to qualify this year? No, I’m not looking to qualify this year. I just want to

N S S A

G U I D E

|

2 0 1 5

get a good seed for next year, so winning that ‘QS in Martinique helped a lot. I was stoked. A lot of people have been asking me that, but it was just a 3000, so alone it won’t do much but help me get into Primes. That’s my goal for this year, to get into Primes. The last Hawaiian Open Mens winner to qualify for the World Tour was Freddie Patacchia [he won in 1999]. Is it hard for you to leave Hawaii to travel to contests often held in poor conditions and cold water on the ‘QS? For me, it’s easy. I like leaving home, because it feels that much better coming back. Being able to travel everywhere with all my friends, I get excited to go on trips. Given the recent success of freesurfers like Noa Deane and Creed McTaggart, have

you ever considered going that route? I like filming with Griffin [Colapinto] and Seth [Moniz, Josh’s brother], but I don’t think I would do the whole freesurfer thing, just focusing on image. I like going on trips and filming; it’s so much fun. It’s different, because there’s not as much pressure, and I like trying to push myself with my friends. I don’t think I could do just that, though. I like doing contests with all the pressure. It’s fun. I like that challenge. Do you think the best surfing is happening in competition? Not really. I think they’re two completely different things [freesurfing and competition], two different types of surfing. Some people don’t hold back, like Filipe in heats. I like watching freesurfing more than heats, though. I think it just depends

on who you are and what you like to see. How will surfing change in the next 10 years? Wow, who knows? The things people are already landing — it’s crazy. Matt Meola just did an insane air [Meola’s 540 spindle flip]; it’s just ridiculous. Who knows what’s going to happen? What advice do you have for groms currently in NSSA working toward a national title? Have fun and perform!

Last year Caroline Marks reached the pinnacle of amateur surfing, taking the NSSA Open Womens national title at just 12 years old, a feat shared only by two-time world champion Carissa Moore. This year, Caroline will return to California with her sights set on making history again by breaking Carissa’s all-time record for most career NSSA titles. And while she’s barely a teenager, Caroline already has plenty to say about her life atop the NSSA totem pole. SURFING: How many years do you have left in the NSSA? Caroline Marks: I’m going to do the Supergirl Pro in California, and depending on how I do in that, I’ll decide if I want to do more Pro Juniors and ‘QS events. It’s a 6-star, so if I’m making heats there, I’ll feel confident to do the 4-5 stars and try to qualify. I’d like to do NSSA for a couple more years. I’ll do it this year and next year for sure. Carissa Moore won 11 titles. Do you want to top that? I would love to do that. It would be amazing. I want to do my best and focus on myself, and every heat put my best performance in. I love surfing so much, so, yeah, I would love to beat her record. I’m super competitive and that would be amazing. What does it mean to be an East Coaster recognized on a national and international stage? I love being recognized as

N S S A

G U I D E

|

an East Coaster. The waves aren’t the best, but because of that I get way more psyched when I get to a spot like Lowers, even when it’s small and people from California don’t want to surf. It still gets fun here, and I’ll always surf if there’s a bump. You and your brother both won your divisions (Open Mens and Open Womens) at East Coast Championships this year. What did that mean to you? It was awesome; I really loved it. I had a blast at that event and I’m super proud of my brother. To get the win together was special. To be the first siblings to do it made it that much more special. I’d love to repeat at Nationals.

Carissa Moore both qualified for the World Tour at 17. Are you looking to follow in their footsteps and qualify early, or do you want to wait and develop your surfing by freesurfing and traveling? I think traveling a little more and surfing bigger waves would be great. I already have a bunch of traveling under my belt. Doing more prestigious events and doing well in those will give me the confidence to tell myself that I’m ready for the big leagues.

What are your goals for the next year? To win a Pro Junior, do well in some of the ‘QS events, and to win NSSA National titles.

How will women’s surfing change in the next 10 years? It has already improved so much, which I’m stoked to see because it’s pushing me and all the girls. In the next couple years we’ll see more events in Hawaii and at other waves of consequence. I think it’s going to keep improving at this fast pace.

Former NSSA Open Womens Champions Lakey Peterson and

working toward a national title? Live your dreams and never give up, because anything is possible. Keep on working, keep surfing, and have fun.

SURF CULTURE STEREOTYPES ARE ALL OVER COASTAL UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES: Hurley tank tops, the word “bro,” chugging cheap beer, owning a carveboard. But actually riding waves consistently while maintaining a 16-unit courseload is a lot more difficult than throwing a shaka in the cafeteria. The Point Loma surf team, however, finds the time to do both, and do them exceptionally well. Loma won National titles in 1989 and 1999. Since then they’ve had a dry spell, but 2015 looks like it could be their year. Team captain Bryce John attributes this to the “fun vibe,” saying, “We have a very strong team bond this year. We had BBQs and little surf trips, and it really helps that everyone comes down to the contests and stays all day, even after they lose. We cheer for each member of the team until the last one is out. It keeps the vibe positive and alive.” While most see the fact that they are a quarter of the size of most of their competitors as a disadvantage, the sense of community at Point Loma has allowed them to support one another in ways bigger schools sometimes can’t. They take classes together, hang out together, and (most importantly) surf together. The semester is over, but they have one last test. And if you walk down to Salt Creek, you’ll find all of them studying together. –Dryden Brown

KAMEHAMEHA HIGH SCHOOL HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE 1887 — back when Grover Cleveland was president — but the surf team is only entering its sixth year. Just last year the group captured its first national title, led by last year’s Men’s and Women’s Varsity High School Champs, Imai Devault and Cayla Moore (lil’ sis of two-time world champ Carissa Moore). “Our win last year meant a lot to our program, students and school, and to all of us as representatives of Hawaii,” says Coach Lea Arce. “I started the surf team in 2009 when Zeke (Lau) was a sophomore, and we were able to win a national team title in five years. Dedication, perseverance and hard work pay off. Our team lost two members to graduation last year, but Imai and Cayla will be back.” With a winning formula and a proven team, Kamehameha looks like a strong bet to fly another big trophy back across the Pacific. Arce, also a biology teacher, expresses the importance of cohesion and strong values within the team. “We are truly a family,” she says. “When we compete, everyone on our team is cheering and encouraging each other, and the fans on the beach see it. Most importantly, we do community service as a team each quarter to emphasize the value of service leadership, and prioritize taking care of our land and resources.” Quite a few top Hawaiian surfers have gone the home school (AKA online school) route to take tests with the help of our pals at Google, but the successes of Kamehameha students show that there is a viable alternative. Says Arce: “All the students attend our traditional school program (7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). Our team’s success has encouraged those that want to be pro surfers to apply to the school, because they see that it is possible to get an incredible education while still surfing at the highest level of competition. Just look at Imai DeVault, Cayla Moore and Zeke Lau (2013 Vans World Cup Champ).” Now that this proud Hawaiian institution has pioneered the way, perhaps other private schools will begin to offer competitive surfing programs as well. Will the 2020 NSSA team champion come from Andover, Groton, or Hotchkiss? Probably not, but the Kamehameha High School Surf Team is coming to Salt Creek this year ready to say “aloha” to all challengers. Because, you know, it also means “goodbye.” —Dryden Brown

IT SEEMS LIKE SHORECLIFFS HAS BEEN DOMINATING MIDDLE SCHOOL SURF COMPETITIONS SINCE SUCH A THING CAME INTO EXISTENCE. And it seems that way because they have, and will likely continue to do so. Located in San Clemente, which has a rich surf legacy of its own to uphold, Shorecliffs helps keep surfing an integral part of the local culture by producing, as a Coach Dave Hennings says, “A huge group of ripping groms that feed off of each other’s energy and push each other’s surfing.” Coaches like Hennings help make that happen. “I absolutely love coaching the surf team at Shorecliffs,” he says, “so it’s hard for me to imagine myself doing anything else. I was a student at Shorecliffs myself, and I plan on staying with the program long term. My goal is to keep the surfing program strong for future generations of San Clemente surfers.” For his efforts in 2014, Hennings won the title of Coach of the Year. “This year,” he says, “Hagan Johnson, Kade Matson, Sebastian Mendes, Taj Lindblad and Kai McPhilips all made the Boys Shortboard finals at Regionals; Kirra Pinkerton and Sam Sibley have been going back and forth winning Girls events all season; and Ethan Mudge has been on a tear on the longboard.” Coming off of such a strong season, Shorecliffs has nowhere to look but forward, toward Nationals. As coach Hennings says, “We had a fantastic showing at the Regional Championships and we want to take that momentum into this event (Nationals). This team is as strong as any I’ve coached,” a strong statement given the alumni list. Kolohe Andino, Ian Crane, Colt Ward, Tia Blanco and this year’s Open Mens Westerns finalists, Griffin Colapinto and Kei Kobayashi, have all sat in those classrooms and competed at Creek. Traditions of winning are hard to establish and harder to maintain, but Shorecliffs knows the formula. –Dryden Brown
