Der Schein trügt nicht. Die Oberfläche ist sinnlich. Alle Erfahrungen, die wir bei der frühen Aneignung der materiellen Welt gemacht haben, sind im Bild der Oberfläche kodiert. Wir sehen und spüren förmlich die zum Bersten starre Härte eines Steins, sehen und hören die klirrende Klarheit von Glas, sehen und riechen die frische Maserung des Holzes. Beim Sehen steigen all die Erlebnisse, all die körperlichen, sinnlichen Erfahrungen wieder auf, die wir mit dem Material gemacht haben und die wir brauchen, uns selbst zu spüren. Dabei geht es nicht um das Echte, echtes Holz etwa. Das Echte ist eine rationale, eine gedachte Kategorie, allenfalls eine moralische, aber keinesfalls eine ästhetische, also sinnliche. Es geht um die in der optischen Information gespeicherten Sinneserfahrungen, die sich mit dem Materialbild neu einstellen und von der Oberfläche bestätigt werden. Farbige Flächen etwa sind reine Oberflächenphänomene, trotzdem können sie höchst sinnliche Wirkungen entfalten. Sinnliches Erkennen wird nicht nur weithin unterschätzt. Mit ihm kommt der zunehmend ökonomisierten und verwissenschaftlichen Welt auch der kreative Antrieb, die welt- und werterschließende Kraft von Gefühlen abhanden. Dem entgegen zu wirken, der Oberfläche – im weitesten Sinne – zu ihrem Recht zu verhelfen, hat sich Surface Book zur Aufgabe gemacht.
Appearances are not deceiving. THE SURFACE IS SENSUAL. All the experiences we acquired as we became acquainted with the material world in our childhood days are encoded in the picture of a surface. We see and literally feel the rock-hard texture of stone, see and hear the clinking clarity of glass, see and smell the fresh grain of wood. When we look at a material, all the moments and all the physical and sensual experiences that we encountered with the material and which we need in order to have a sense of ourselves well up inside us again. This has nothing to do with something being genuine, like real wood, for example. Genuine is a rational, notional category, at best a moral one, but by no means one that is aesthetic and thus sensual. It is about the sensual experiences stored in the optical information, which come to mind with the picture of the material and are verified by the surface. For example, coloured surfaces are purely surface phenomena, yet their impact can be highly sensual. Sensual perception is not only widely underestimated, it also goes astray in our increasingly economised and science-driven world, which as a result loses its creative motor and the power of feelings to reveal the world and values. Surface Book is dedicated to counteracting this trend and assuring that the surface – in the broadest sense – finds its rightful appreciation.
