New tiny house Wellness campus set to open in 2026

ayla George-Purser has been dreaming about this for two years.

When she interviewed for her job at the Suquamish Tribe’s Wellness Center, she told the panel she hoped the tribe could someday offer a live-in recovery program on the reservation — a place where Suquamish tribal members could do intensive treatment work without having to leave the community.

“Two years later, here we are,” said George-Purser, a Peer Support Specialist and Suquamish tribal member. “Sometimes it is hard to leave home. And sometimes it can be very beneficial to be able to stay home, work on yourself and work on your recovery within your community and culture.”

That vision is now taking shape across the street from the Tribal Admin Center, on the same site where the Place of Change tiny house shelters were previously located.

The new program — described as an “extension” or “annex” of the Wellness Center — will combine structured substance use disorder treatment with on-site housing in new tiny house-style dormitory units. A new central building will provide a hub for services, group meetings, and other daily activities.

A formal name will be determined later in the year, but for now staff are calling it the Wellness Recovery Academy.

Paid for entirely by $500,000 in grant funding, construction of the main building is now underway with the new dorm units expected to be completed by this summer. Wellness staff are planning to begin accepting student clients into the program in the fall.

Meanwhile, a new gazebo has been added to the public restrooms building there as part of the overhaul.

Treatment program

“This is a residential treatment program,” said Wellness Center Program Manager Abby Purser.

“So, this will be an absolute no drug and alcohol campus.”

Scott Dalgleish, Wellness Center SUD counselor, said the model is designed for people who need more support than standard outpatient care, but not a locked 24/7 inpatient facility.

“Think of it as a more intensive outpatient program that has housing attached to it,” said Dalgleish.

In practice, clients will spend about five hours a day in treatment programming — and then return each evening to a stable, supportive place to live.

“One of the really cool parts is having a place to go where other people who are also seeking to change their lives and can support each other in a common environment,” he said. “We don’t have that right now.”

The new residential units will include “new and improved tiny homes,” George-Purser said, with full amenities — including bathrooms, kitchen space and in-unit laundry — to help residents focus on recovery and daily living skills.

At least two of the new tiny homes will be large enough to accommodate a small family.

While the residential program is being built for treatment clients, staff said an adjacent site will remain dedicated to basic overnight shelter — separate from the treatment campus.

“Detached from the program, we will still have three of the original tiny shelters for overnight use only,” George-Purser said. The units will be for those who have not yet committed to a recovery program or have other barriers to longer term residential care. “So, we still have the shelters for people who don’t have a place to stay out of the weather.”

Specific policies are still being developed, with a phased approach that prioritizes Suquamish tribal members first.

Different from Poulsbo project

The residential recovery program is separate from the tribe’s larger holistic treatment clinic project in Poulsbo, which is expected to open in late 2027.

Suquamish Tribe’s Health Division Director Steve Kutz said the Poulsbo facility will be a broader, comprehensive service hub — while the new site near Tribal Admin will focus on a different level of care and a different purpose.

For George-Purser, bringing a higher-intensity, culturally connected option closer to home is the point — and she sees her peer support role as central to helping residents build a path forward.

Holiday TANF event big hit!

Our holiday event to celebrate our new Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families – TANF for short – was a wonderful success. It brought families together to capture a festive family photo and pick up a holiday gift bag.

Events like this highlight the meaningful impact our program has on the families we serve and reinforce the importance of supporting our community.

The event’s theme centered on the importance of families having regular conversations with their children and teens. To support this, we shared Family Conversation Cards that encourage meaningful discussions at home.

These kinds of conversations help families connect around topics that build emotional health, strengthen family bonds, support cultural identity, encourage healthy decision-making, and promote success in school and life.

Our goal was to remind families that even simple, everyday conversations can make a powerful difference in a child’s confidence, resilience, and overall well-being.

We welcome anyone who may be interested in learning more about Tribal TANF to stop by our office. Our team is here to answer questions, provide support, and help you find out if you qualify for services.

Chairman’s Report

T

he Suquamish Tribe has strong government-to-government relationships throughout the region and across the nation. These relationships are essential to fulfilling our duty and mission to protect treaty rights and grow our economy and social services to a level appropriate for our heritage as one of the primary tribal nations of the Salish Sea. The new King County Executive, Girmay Zahilay, was sworn in at the King County Council Chambers in the presence of the County Council and his friends and family. I was able to attend his swearing-in and represent our tribe within the City of Seattle, which is part of our traditional homeland.

Keeping things moving

The Kitsap Regional Coordinating Council held its monthly meeting in Bremerton at the Norm Dicks Government Center. There is uncertainty in transportation planning due to new federal budget rules that will delay the annual transportation funding competition conducted by the Puget Sound Regional Council.

We also thanked outgoing Poulsbo Mayor Becky Erickson for her service on the KRCC Board.

The SR-305 Corridor Committee met to discuss ongoing projects on the state highway connecting the Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal and Viking Way in Poulsbo. Planning continues for a roundabout at the Day Road intersection on Bainbridge Island, as does research on culvert replacement at Klebeal Creek near the Clearwater Casino and Resort.

We continue to work with the Washington State Department of Transportation on alternative review for traffic improvements in the Gorst Corridor. We will carefully monitor all options for potential impacts to treaty fishing and habitat.

Standing united

Intertribal organizations, such as the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians and the National Congress of American Indians, have played a critical role this year in responding to the rapid deployment of policy changes from the Trump Administration that may be detrimental to tribal sovereignty and government services.

By joining together with regional and national

organizations, tribes have demonstrated the value of collective action as unified tribal governments.

The ATNI Executive Board met to review and approve budgets and other financial actions and to review the draft agenda for the Winter Conference to be held in Portland in February.

The NCAI Executive Board met to review the organization’s budget, brief the Executive Council on the state of tribal relations with the federal government, and provide updates on the upcoming NCAI Executive Winter Conference Session in Washington, D.C. The NCAI parliamentarian also swore in new and returning Area Vice Presidents, including myself, for their new terms.

The Association of Washington Tribes held a hybrid meeting in Tulalip with state legislators and agency staff to discuss the upcoming legislative session. Tribal leaders and state representatives shared information about the state’s revenue shortfalls and the likelihood of additional budget cuts next session. Tribal leaders are working to protect tribal operations from potential impacts related to these challenges.

Focus on education

Education continues to be a priority for the Suquamish Tribe.

The Chief Kitsap Academy School Board, consisting of Tribal Council members, met to receive updates on school operations. The girls volleyball team had a successful season, and winter boys

basketball is underway. We continue to encourage good attendance and respectful behavior through communication and incentives.

My duties on the University of Washington Board of Regents included attending several meetings. The UW Alumni Association is leading the design of a new Welcome Center to be built near the Burke Museum. A meeting was held with the project architect and a group of tribal advisors to provide input on the design. Suggestions included honoring the ancestral history of the land and creating a welcoming atmosphere for the Native community.

Another internal team is planning the private fundraising effort for Phase 2 of the Intellectual House on the Seattle campus. This phase will provide additional office and meeting space to support tribal students and Intellectual House staff.

The UW Medicine Advisory Board also held its monthly meeting. Reports were shared on the impacts of potential Medicaid cuts on operations, along with an update on the expansion of Harborview Medical Center. I also led an honoring of three outgoing regents. Regents Constance Rice, Rogelio Riojas, and Alexes Harris have served the University in exemplary ways during their respective tenures.

The event reflected a great deal of care and coordination, from the activities and food to the welcoming atmosphere created for families. Brenda Guerrero, along with teachers and staff from the Education Division and volunteers from the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, hosted creative crafting tables that were a hit with children of all ages.

Nehreen Ayub and her team at Human Services helped gather and wrap hundreds of presents, ensuring every child left with something special.

Virtually every department in tribal government contributed to the effort, including donations of baked goods that made for one of our biggest cake walks ever. Special thank you to Bainbridge Island Mayor Ashley Mathews who looked like she was having as much fun helping orchestrate the cake walk as the kids were playing along for all those sweet treats.

Our Communications team also shared their annual gift to the tribal community, a beautiful photo calendar to help ring in the New Year.

And thank you the cooks who prepared our delicious meal and to Tribal Elder Patty Medina for her blessing on the evening and the food that we shared.

I am grateful to everyone who contributed their time and energy to make this event such a meaningful success for our families.

Looking ahead

Hoping all had a safe and happy holiday season with your families. As we move forward, we can reflect back on 2025 and how we overcame many challenges and achieved some successes, and make 2026 a productive year.

Tribal government and council are working together to plan for the upcoming General Council meeting where we will give reports and seek input on tribal government priorities.

In the months ahead, we will continue advancing projects that preserve and express our culture, protect our treaty rights, and strengthen our economy.

While there is uncertainty at the state and federal levels, we remain focused on long-term planning and responsible governance.

Many initiatives now in development will begin to take clearer shape as we move into 2026, and I am confident that by working together, we will continue building a strong future for the Suquamish Tribe.

New Explorer Cadet Program invites Suquamish youth to see policing up close

F

or Officer Alicia Barker, the spark started at 16.

Growing up in Spokane, Barker didn’t know anyone in law enforcement and assumed a career as a cop was out of reach. That changed when she joined a police Explorer Cadet program as a teenager.

“I realized it was totally different than what I saw on TV,” Barker said. “It was something I truly was passionate about.”

Barker credits that opportunity directly with her now serving as a Suquamish police officer. That’s why she’s helping launch the department’s new Explorer Cadet Program, designed to give youth ages 16 to 21 an inside look at policing while building skills that extend far beyond the badge.

Chairman Leonard Forsman encouraged families to help spread the word. “This is a great opportunity to learn more about policing and a potential career,” said Forsman during a recent presentation on the cadet program.

“I would really like to attract tribal youth to this program because some of the people that we’ll have in this program now are going to be your police officers five ten years from now,” Suquamish Police Chief Mark Williams told Tribal Council.

Council Member Lorilee Morsette encouraged Williams to work with Chief Kitsap Academy, the Family & Friends Center, and other youth-focused programs across tribal government to help spread the word.

“We need more tribal member youth to get in this program,” said Vice Chairman Josh Bagley.

“This is a great opportunity.”

Those words of encouragement matter, Barker said, especially in a small community where youth may feel unsure about whether law enforcement is a path for them.

“That’s exactly why this program exists,” she said.

“It’s about showing what’s possible.”

Hands-on volunteer work

The Explorer Cadet Program is a volunteer

commitment, with meetings held every other Friday for about two hours, plus optional events and ride-alongs. Cadets receive training that includes interview skills, public speaking, and leadership opportunities — skills Barker said she still relies on today.

But the draw for many teens is the hands-on experience.

Cadets can participate in ride-alongs, observe real police work, and train alongside officers in controlled environments. That can include defensive driving exercises, building-search scenarios, and firearms safety and handling. Suquamish Police Cadets will be issued their own unique cadet uniforms and badges.

“What’s fun is getting to see how things really work,” Barker said. “You’re in uniform, you’re

training with officers, and you’re learning skills you won’t get anywhere else.”

Cadets also have the option to attend regional Explorer academies that feel more like law-enforcement boot camp than summer camp. Held at the Yakima Training Center, the week-long sessions include early mornings, barracks living, hands-on tactical training, and realistic mock hiring scenarios. “Each time you go, it progresses,” Barker said, from basic training through advanced leadership levels that challenge cadets physically and mentally while building confidence.

Suquamish Deputy Police Chief Tommy Nance can vouch for that. He started his own law enforcement career as a cadet in Kitsap County that put him on a path toward working for the Suquamish Police Department 25 years ago.

The experience can be transformative, he said, even for youth who never plan to become officers.

“Before I became a cadet, I had zero interest in law enforcement,” Nance said. “That changed once I got involved.”

Barker said many former cadets go on to careers outside policing, carrying with them confidence, discipline, and a deeper connection to their community.

“We’re not here to force anyone into a career,” she said. “We’re here to open doors.”

The Tribal Council’s resolution supporting the program formalizes that commitment.

The Suquamish Fitness Center has some exciting news for 2026! We will be opening a Nutrition Bar! What are we going to serve in the Nutrition Bar you ask? Healthy recipes that include regional traditional foods, plants, and herbs along with healthy options that will fuel athletes and their families who support them daily. We are developing a menu focusing on recipes that are made with whole ingredients, less processed chemicals, less sugar content, and non-inflammatory oils, so that our community is nourished with gifts Creator gave us.

A “soft” opening date will be set for some time in January, as we are trying to be prepared for all of you setting those New Year’s resolutions. We hope to offer convenient post-work out protein smoothies, overnight oats, egg cups. And for those who go to the gym after work we’ll have rice bowls loaded with protein and veggies or hearty salads, and lettuce wraps for those cutting down on bread.

One of the biggest questions asked is, “Will there be espresso?” Yes, we will be serving espresso!

We may not offer loads of flavor options or have the gigantic 32oz size cups like they do at typical espresso stands, but we do plan to have hot sizes 12oz-20oz and cold drinks 16oz-24oz. We plan to have weekly coffee specials, and will carry Lotus, a plant-based energy drink. We will also have a weekly flavored electrolyte water made with traditional herbs and plants that will hydrate you better than any flavored Gatorade because it’s made with natural ingredients and not chemicals and dyes.

Tony Adams’ New Life on the Water From Geoduck Diver to Ferry Boat Driver

Puget Sound and the Salish Sea. The system operates 21 vessels, serving 10 routes and 20 terminals carrying some 20 million passengers and 9 million vehicles every year.

To make all that happen, WSF employs 2,000 staff, who work not only aboard vessels but also in career tracks at the various terminals and the Bainbridge Island maintenance facility.

Working aboard ship requires extensive training and certifications. New hires must secure a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card from Homeland Security, undergo five background checks, pass a Coast Guard physical and drug test, and earn a Merchant Mariner Credential.

“That’s just to get in the door,” Adams said. “Then you’re off to firefighting school at the “Fire Dragon” in Ballard, medical training, life boat training — there’s always something new to learn.”

All that training and experience was put to the test on recent evening in October during the Seattle-Bainbridge Island run aboard the M/V Tacoma.

or nearly a decade, Tony Adams made his living as a geoduck diver, working long hours in cold waters to bring up one of the most valuable shellfish in the world. It was a job that combined skill, endurance, and a deep connection to the sea — a natural fit for a Suquamish tribal member whose life had always revolved around the water.

Then, at 35, everything changed. Adams developed sudden-onset allergies that made it impossible to equalize under pressure. He could no longer dive. “It was tough,” Adams said. “That was my life, and I had to hang it all up.”

But after a period of struggle, with his career adrift, he found a way to chart a new course in 2016.

As the sun slipped behind the Olympic Mountains, the lookout spotted something strange from his perch next the big ship’s wheelhouse in the fading twilight in Elliott Bay. An odd, erratic flash was piercing out from the waterline not far from the Seattle Great Wheel. The ship altered course to investigate.

It didn’t take long for the crew to see that a tandem kayak had been swamped by high waves, leaving two people clinging to the overturned hull.

As part of the designated rescue crew, Adams and his team were already getting the ferry’s starboard A new course That’s when Adams applied to Washington State side rescue boat into the water.

Adams commended for at-sea rescue Suquamish tribal member and Washington State Ferry Boatswain’s Mate Tony Adams was recently awarded the Life Ring Award for his role in leading at-sea rescue efforts from the M/V Wenatchee on Oct. 16, 2025.

Here’s WSF’s Director of Marine Operation Dirk van der Raadt’s personal commendation of Adam’s actions that night:

D

ear Anthony, I want to take a moment to personally acknowledge your role in the rescue operation that took place aboard the Wenatchee on October 16. That evening, when two people were reported in distress after departing Pier 52, you and your crew responded without hesitation.

Launching the rescue boat in the dark and working in coordination with the Seattle Fire Department required both precision and courage.

Your calm, skillful actions helped bring two individuals safely out of the water and ensured they received the immediate care they needed. Moments like these are never expected, but they reveal who we are as mariners. They show the strength of our training, our teamwork, and the quiet pride that defines this fleet.

It is easy to talk about service and safety as ideals. It is much harder to live them in a moment of urgency, with lives depending on your choices. You and your shipmates did exactly that.

You upheld the highest standard of what it means to work for Washington State Ferries; not just moving people across Puget Sound but standing ready when the unexpected happens.

On behalf of the entire Marine Operations Department, thank you for your actions and your professionalism that night. I am proud to serve alongside you and grateful for the integrity you bring to this work.

“It became one of the most tribally involved vessels in the whole fleet,” Adams said.

Working on board the Suquamish when the ship was first commissioned in 2018 also gave him a chance to share his culture with passengers. “I was in the cabin in an entry-level job, but I got to give people tours and explain the artwork,” he said. “It even gave me the chance to wear my proper tribal name Hab-see-wis on my nameplate. Nobody else gets to do that.”

When the Suquamish launched, Adams secured the ferry’s first flag from the staff captain and donated it to the Tribal Elders for display in the Elders Lodge.

Paying it forward

Adams isn’t just building his own career. He is helping other tribal members follow his path.

For the past three years, he has increasingly lent a hand with recruiting, attending tribal jobs fairs, speaking with students at Chief Kitsap Academy, and guiding candidates through the maze of Coast Guard paperwork, TSA checks, and medical requirements.

“The first tribal member I helped get hired was Connor Maloney,” Adams said. “Now, I’ve got another just starting and two more in the pipeline.

My goal is to have a wall of photos of everyone I’ve helped get jobs.”

He credits the Tribe’s 477 Workforce Program for covering fees and helping applicants with appointments for fingerprints, physicals, and other requirements. “They make sure cost isn’t a barrier,” Adams said.

For Adams, it’s about showing that a future on the ferries is within reach. “If people see my success and know where I’ve come from, I hope it gives them some hope that they can do it too,” he said. “We spend our lives on the water — if I didn’t fish or dive, I might not have ended up on the ferries. But it’s a natural fit, and it’s a great career.”

The kind of enthusiasm has made him a natural fit to speak at events such as the Seattle Boat Show to help share the WSF story.

(cont. from p12) as well as the tribe’s Higher Education Board. In March, he testified before the Washington State Senate and met with Gov. Bob Ferguson to help pass a legislation expanding Maritime training and education opportunities for high school students.

Looking ahead

As Adams continues to advance, he’s setting his sights on higher maritime certifications with hopes of one day of becoming a captain. Along the way, he is also sharing the journey at home — raising two sons as a single dad.

Meanwhile, Adams has also rejoined the Suquamish Canoe Family in recent years as co-skipper of the tribe’s support vessel, the M/V Challacum.

The barge travels alongside the canoes, carrying gear, supplies, and safety equipment every summer for the annual Tribal Canoe Journey, among other events.

“For me, it’s come full circle,” Adams said. “I grew up around the Canoe Journey. Now I’m helping guide it — literally — and making sure everyone stays safe on the water.”

His youngest son Donavan has been training aboard the Challacum as well, learning deckhand duties from his dad and the rest of the support crew.

The experience blends family, culture, and seamanship — the same values that drive Adams in his work with the ferries.

“It’s powerful to be out there with your community, to feel that connection to the water,” he said.

“Everything I’ve learned on the ferries comes into play — navigation, communication, safety. It’s all part of the same path.”

Funding college and trade school What students should know before they apply

P

aying for college, university or a trade program can feel overwhelming — but the first step is understanding what “financial aid” actually means.

Olivia Ponce, Youth and Young Adult Development Specialist with the 477 Yusawiac Program, walked students and families through the basics of funding higher education in a series of presentations in December.

Her message was straightforward: financial aid isn’t just filling out a form. “Financial aid is really the process,” she said. That’s why starting early gives students more options.

That process begins with choosing the correct application. Students complete one of two forms: FAFSA or WASFA. FAFSA connects students to federal funding, while WASFA connects eligible students to Washington state funding. The forms are often mentioned interchangeably, but they are not the same. Deadlines matter, and applying early can increase access to grants and scholarships.

Ponce also emphasized the importance of building a relationship with the financial aid office at the school a student plans to attend. “Your best friend is going to be the financial aid office at the institution that you’re attending,” she said. That office manages how aid is distributed and can help students navigate changes, questions or unexpected challenges.

The four main types of aid

Financial aid generally falls into four categories: 1. Grants: Usually need-based and often “free money,” though repayment may be required if a student withdraws early, changes enrollment status or no longer meets eligibility requirements after funds are distributed.

2. Scholarships: Money students don’t repay, awarded based on need, merit or specific criteria such as field of study or community involvement. Some scholarships also offer mentoring, networking and professional development.

3. Work-study: A federal program that allows eligible students to earn money through part-time employment, often with flexible schedules that accommodate coursework.

4. Loans: Borrowed money that must be repaid with interest. “The amount of money that you borrow is not the amount of money you have to pay back,” Ponce said. Students are also not required to accept the full loan amount offered.

A common misconception

One myth Ponce addresses directly is the belief that tribal membership automatically covers the full cost of college.

“Being a tribal member does not guarantee that your college is paid for,” she said. Many tribal higher education programs still require applications and may have different rules for in-state versus out-of-state students. Checking with a tribe’s Higher Education department early is essential.

Suquamish tribal members are expected to apply for scholarships and grants as part of their Higher Education application.

What happens after you apply

After submitting FAFSA or WASFA, students should continue applying for scholarships and private grants, monitor email closely, and confirm that schools received all required materials.

Financial aid award letters vary by institution, but they typically include three key pieces of information: estimated cost of attendance, types of aid offered, and net price.

If aid exceeds cost, students may receive a refund.

If not, the financial aid office can help explore payment plans and campus resources, including book assistance and equipment lending.

10 tips for writing a great scholarship essay These tips come from experience on both sides of the process. Olivia Ponce earned her Ford Family Scholarship through a competitive essay process, then later gave back by serving for five years on the foundation’s scholarship review board, reading and evaluating hundreds of applications and essays.

Here’s how students can stand out: 1. Start early and plan backward.

Put deadlines on a calendar and build in time for drafting, feedback and revision.

2. Treat the essay like a paycheck.

A scholarship award can equal hundreds of dollars per hour when compared to the time invested writing it well.

3. Know the organization.

Understand the scholarship’s mission, values and purpose before you write.

4. Know yourself first.

List your values, strengths, community contributions and resilience. Ask trusted people to help if needed.

5. Read the prompt carefully.

Many prompts ask multiple questions at once. Make sure you answer every part.

6. Start with a brain dump.

Get ideas on the page first, then organize them into themes.

7. Outline before polishing.

A simple structure helps your story flow and stay focused.

8. Read it out loud.

This helps catch awkward phrasing and makes sure the essay sounds like you.

9. Follow formatting rules exactly.

Word count, spacing and layout matter — some applications are screened before a reviewer ever reads them.

10. Write from resilience, not hopelessness.

Challenges can be part of your story, but reviewers are trained to look for growth, problem-solving, and the ability to persevere.

Please keep your vehicles in good working order, keep those fuel tanks greater than half full for the weight and carry the stuff you’ll need in an emergency. Blankets, snacky snacks, etc.

Shout outs

Suquamish Police Department helped lead this year’s annual Shop with a Cop event with local law enforcement agencies providing presents for Kitsap County youth.

Here’s a good rule of thumb: If you wonder “Self, (you’ll know it’s you because you’ll recognize your own voice), should I call 911?” you’ve already answered the question. Yes, that’s exactly when you should call 911. And you shouldn’t wait a second more to do it. I would rather get dispatched for something that might be unnecessary, than get the call after we could have intervened.

I want to give a shout-out to our Marine Division Capt. Ryan George. He managed to wheel and deal with a local business to find the best price on two new motors for the geoduck monitoring and safety boat and – AND! – work out an agreement with them to give priority consideration to SPD for repairs when the shop is backed up. Nice work! This is long overdue and he managed to squeeze this out of the 2025 budget.

I also want to thank Tribal Council for the resolution signed in support of the Police Explorer Cadet program. We are working in partnership with our community in hopes of mentoring our next generation of Suquamish Police Officers, homegrown right here in Suquamish.

When not to call 911

Let’s talk…

Speaking of missing persons: There is NO AMOUNT TIME you must wait. I’ll say that again. There is NO time you must wait to call to make a missing persons report. Please, just call as soon as you are concerned. When YOU think your family member is missing, YOU should call 911 and SPD will get the ball rolling. That applies even if you’re somewhere other than Suquamish. If you’re in Seattle or Tacoma or Moses Lake or wherever, still call 911.

If you’re a Suquamish tribal member, just be sure to let the dispatcher know that. When tribal members are involved, the Suquamish Police Department will get involved no matter where the person went missing. SPD Policy 315 – Missing Persons is available for any tribal member to review; it’s a detailed process-based policy that guides our missing persons efforts.

Let’s talk about when you should call 911.

If you or someone else is having an emergency – call 911.

If you need to report a missing person – call 911.

If you need to talk to police officer – call 911.

If you want report something that’s not an emergency – call 911.

Do you see a pattern here? Basically, always call 911.

There is no non-emergency number. We contract with Kitsap911 to provide dispatch call management for SPD and provide a central point of dispatch. Texting one of us or calling a personal phone, even emailing or messaging us on Facebook (which are the worst ways to report something) is inefficient and causes delays.

Area youth “Shop with a Cop” for the holidays

The ONLY time you should not call 911 is when we’ve listed an SPD phone number to call to get information from us about something specific. For example, you may have seen Officer Alicia Barker’s number listed to get details on our new Cadet Program. (And should definitely call her for that, if you know of any youth that might interested.)

Okay, you could also call any of us to grab a cup of coffee. And I’m not saying we all like donuts with our coffee, but I’m not saying we don’t either.

But, really, for anything else — please, I’m begging you, call 911.

Happy New Year to everyone! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and are relaxing after the fun frenzy of the holidays.

The Elders Holiday Party at Kiana Lodge on Dec. 6th was enjoyed by our Elders and their guests, with good food and fun.

Dolores Mills and Dicki Johnson gave blessings, the meal was delicious (as usual) with a choice of prime rib, salmon, or ham, along with all the sides.

The band Diamond Junction kept the place hopping. James Boure and Michael Rogers were out on the dance floor with Della Crowell, Patricia Medina, Patty Blomberg, Sheri Wilson, Melissa Lund and other ladies. We need more of our guys out there next time!

Many thanks go out to Hailey Ferrel & the staff at Kiana Lodge for the food and service. Thanks also go out to our Human Services coworkers Antonia Ewing, Faith Reese, Samantha Johnson, Jennifer Hess, and Director Nehreen Ayub. Thank you also to family members Neah Porraz (Della’s daughter) and Connar Lund (Melissa’s son) who volunteered to help make the event a success.

The Annual Elders Holiday Ceramics Workshop at Dancing Brush in Poulsbo was a nice time to quietly relax with others and socialize before the holiday crunch came upon us.

We had over 20 Elders in attendance. Elder Lori Wolfe (Alexas) was in town from California and we are glad she was able to come paint with us.

What a beautiful celebration we shared in honor of our beloved nail professional, Lucy Philips, who has been trimming our nails and caring for us for over 15 years. Lucy has always brought cheer, kindness, and a joyful spirit wherever she went. Her smile and positive energy have uplifted so many of us through the years.

We celebrated Lucy with cake and flowers, and she was wrapped in a blanket while Teri Bayes shared heartfelt words of gratitude and appreciation. Then Gene Jones (Marilyn’s husband) surprised us by singing and playing his guitar. When he began playing Elvis’s Blue Hawaii, something magical happened — Lucy stood up and began to dance the hula.

We extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the Vollenweider family (Alexas) on the loss of Patricia Vollenweider, a beloved sister and mother. “Patty” was a true fighter, facing life with strength and courage until the very end.

Patty is at peace and has joined the ancestors, watching over her loved ones. May her spirit be surrounded by love, and may her family find comfort and strength during this difficult time.

We hope many blessings come your way in 2026, along with new adventures and activities with the Elders Program. Remember, we have Elders Fitness on Tuesdays and Thursdays for those who want to kickstart their health program with a New Year’s resolution!

Suquamish Tribal Elders ages 65 and older who are enrolled in Health Benefits will not be able to get Medicare Premium Reimbursements until Health Benefits has received their new Social Security letter. The deadline to do this is Jan. 31.

These reimbursements are sent by Finance with monthly Elder payments.

After Jan. 31, 2026 no reimbursements will be sent until we have your 2026 Social Security Letter on file. You must be enrolled in Health Benefits and reside in Kitsap, Jefferson, King, Mason, Pierce, Snohomish, and Whatcom counties to receive this reimbursement.

Due to Medicare Premiums changing each year we must have your Annual Social Security Letter before we can reimburse you. Social Security sends this letter out to you every November, December or January.
