EDITOR IALE F O R WA R D LAURA MORANDI: Anche quest’anno con la pubblicazione di Artichoke14 il Corso di laurea in Comunicazione visiva ha il piacere di rinnovare il suo annuale appuntamento con il pubblico, e lo fa in un modo del tutto innovativo e sperimentale.

Gli studenti si sono confrontati con molteplici e variegate esperienze visive, umane e professionali, hanno prodotto immagini e contenuti editoriali sperimentali, confrontandosi in prima persona con un tema tanto affascinante quanto complesso: la scuola del futuro.

Gli studenti hanno dovuto riflettere in prima persona e con i loro interlocutori, per poi condividere, interpretare, costruire e tessere delle composizioni visive coerenti con le visioni di chi sogna, con le riflessioni di chi pensa, con l’incognita di un orizzonte presunto. È quindi nato un progetto sperimentale e vibrante, dal quale traspare la passione, la creatività e la motivazione di studenti e docenti.

EN SUPSI has been around for twenty years but this number of Artichoke is a little more special than others.

Together with Emmanuel Crivelli I thought that the school could look to the future, to its own future in new spaces, although also to a more general future.

The students asked themselves — and also experts and colleagues — what we would eat, how we would dress, how we would plan, how we would talk and how we would live in a not too distant future: in one imagined, possible, feared, one waited for or simply a futuristic future. My thanks go to all of the students and to the people who exchanged ideas with them. Even if foreseeing the future is an impossible exercise, let’s hope that the words and images grouped together

EMMANUEL CRIVELLI: Per questo numero di Artichoke ho scelto il tema di La scuola del futuro perché mentre lavoravamo alla rivista iniziava la costruzione del nuovo campus di Mendrisio, ma soprattutto perché il futuro è immaginario, e quindi per produrre il contenuto gli studenti erano obbligati a creare una storia che non esiste ancora e quindi generare delle immagini nuove, frutto della loro fantasia.

Ho quindi deciso di invitare Jean-Vincent Simonet, giovane fotografo pieno di talento, le cui fotografie sono sempre il frutto di un esperimento ludico. Esperimenti e sperimentazioni che sono alla base della metodologia di lavoro che ho imposto agli studenti, nella fotografia e nel design di questo numero di Artichoke che avete tra le mani.

La tipografia diventa immagine e certe fotografie diventano pura grafica, come la serie di fotogrammi prodotti nella camera oscura improvvisata in un’aula della SUPSI. Concludo ringraziando EDITORIALE / FORWARD

Experiments and forms of experimentation are the bases of the work method I wanted the students to adopt for the photography and design contained in this number of Artichoke which is now in your hands. The typography becomes image and some photographs become pure graphics, like the series of photograms produced in the improvised darkroom in a SUPSI classroom. Abbiamo parlato con il presidente Stefano Dominella di stile, filosofia, ricerca e ispirazione.

Come descriverebbe il suo stile?

Lo stile è qualcosa di imprescindibile dalla propria personalità, si sviluppa e si consolida con il trascorrere della

vita. La curiosità è un elemento fondamentale per l’affermazione del proprio stile e gli accadimenti del “mondo” fanno parte dell’evolversi e del mutare dello stile.

Qual è la sua filosofia?

Essere coerenti con sé stessi evitando le influenze del momento, ma stando sempre ben attenti alla contemporaneità. Mai nulla è per sempre, anche per il proprio stile, che può mutare, però seguendo le linee guida di ciò che abbiamo costruito.

Qual è o cos’è la sua più grande fonte d’ispirazione?

Le fonti di ispirazione variano con il

trascorrere della vita e delle proprie esperienze . Sono attratto dall’arte contemporanea, dalla natura, dal Rinascimento, ma anche dai mutamenti giovanili, dalla musica, dal cinema, ma anche una guerra, un fatto sociale possono essere fonte di ispirazione!

Qual è stata la collezione che le ha dato più soddisfazione?

Le incertezze e la paura della prima collezione che ho presentato, sono state suggestioni che non dimenticherò mai. E pure, la collezione dedicata a Eva, la prima donna del creato e ancora l’abito creato per Madonna, e la collezione presentata nella Nuvola

Quali sono le linee guida del suo stile e delle sue collezioni?

La sperimentazione e la ricerca sono alla base del mio progetto di moda o dei progetti della mia mostra. Senza questi due elementi non potrei creare nulla né dar vita ai miei sogni e alle mie

These are all production sectors of the Maison Gattinoni, founded in 1944 and as dynamic as ever. We talked to the Company’s president, Stefano Dominella, about style, company philosophy, research and inspiration.

How would you describe your style?

Style is essential to your personality,

throughout your life. Curiosity is a fundamental element for the affirmation of your style and the events of the “world” are part of the evolution and changing of style.

What is your philosophy?

Being coherent with yourself. Avoiding momentary influences but always paying careful attention to what is con-

temporary. Nothing is always for ever, also true for your style which can change, although following the guidelines of what we have constructed.

What is your most important source of inspiration?

The sources of inspiration vary with the years and with your experience.

I’m personally attracted by contemporary art, nature and the Renaissance, although also by the changes in young people, by music, cinema. And also by a war: a social fact can be the source of inspiration!

What collection has given you the most satisfaction?

The uncertainties and the fear tied to the first collection I presented.

Suggestiveness and sense of fascination that I’ll never forget. And also the collection dedicated to Eve, the first woman created by God. And the dress created for Madonna… and the collection presented in 2014 in the Nuvola [Cloud] by Fuksas.

What are the guidelines of your style and your collections?

Credo che la tecnologia abbia da sempre profondamente influenzato il destino dell’abbigliamento e della moda. Il percorso espositivo, Manus × Machina:

Fashion in an Age of Technology, proposto recentemente dai curatori Bolton e Koda al MET, ne è un formidabile esempio. Negli ultimi anni, grazie alla crescente sperimentazione di tessuti intelligenti e all’integrazione di sensori nei capi di abbigliamento, il connubio tra moda e tecnologia non è percepito soltanto come relazione tutta interna alla performance degli indumenti, ma soprattutto come interfaccia simbiotica e seamless capace di ridefinire la relazione tra corpo e abito. La tecnologia indossabile sta infatti mettendo in atto profondi mutamenti della sensibilità tanto nei modelli produttivi che in quelli del consumo. La tecnologia si presenta quindi come strumento di supporto. E, tuttavia, differenti storie sartoriali raccontano come essa sia motivo di ispirazione per sottrarre la figura umana alla ipervisibilità innescata dai sistemi di sorveglianza urbana. Penso, ad esempio, alle collezioni di Simon Thorogood che hanno tradotto sul cartamodello la UNIFORM

Pur essendo qualità tracciabili sono infatti molto spesso vincolate ad un eccesso di produzione e di consumo lontano dai crismi di un sistema ecosostenibile.

Ad una filosofia indumentale che prende le distanze dal sistema moda mainstream aderisce, un decennio più tardi, anche il design dell’abito di Monica Bolzoni.

I suoi capi Bianca e Blu iscrivono il rapporto abito-corpo all’interno di una griglia di forme geometriche basiche – triangolo cerchio, rettangolo – che abbracciano i corpi e li restituiscono alla loro unicità. Dallo studio delle forme emerge che non si tratta di pensare “all’abito sul corpo” – afferma la designer – “ma al corpo nell’abito”. Sia in un caso che nell’altro, si tratta di tecnologie vestimentarie che, nella loro rispettiva specificità, configurano un’etica e un’estetica dell’abito volte a valorizzare la creatività del fruitore senza vincolare le dinamiche del suo libero gioco interpretativo e performativo.

We discussed this question with Vittoria Caterina Caratozzolo, professor of the theory of fashion.

What do you think about technology as applied to fashion? Could it be a supporting instrument or a restriction?

I think that technology has always profoundly influenced the outcome of clothing and fashion. The exhibition titled Manus x Machina: Fashion in an

Age of Technology, recently proposed by the curators Bolton and Koda at the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art), is a formidable example of this.

rics and the integration of sensors in items of clothing, the union between

ARTICHOKE14 fashion and technology is not only seen as a relation which is entirely part

of the performance of clothes but is above all perceived as the symbiotic and “seamless” interface capable of redefining the relation between the body and clothing. In fact, wearable technology is bringing about profound changes of sensitivity and awareness in both models of production and those of consumption. Technology consequently presents itself as a supporting instrument. And yet different sartorial stories tell about how it is the reason for inspiration in order to free the human figure from the hypervisibility triggered by the systems of urban surveillance. I’m thinking, for example, of the collections by Simon Thorogood which have translated Stealth technology onto the paper pattern. By adapting the garment by way of the skillful use of panels, the tactics of this bomber aircraft that is invisible to radar, Thorogood’s intention was to give back anonymity to the over-exposed body. And so the union of fashion and technology reveals subtle ambivalences, the turning of interpretations inside-out. Even more complex is the interpretation of technologically advanced collections that are declared to be functional, ethical and respectful with regards to the environment. In fact, while these are traceable qualities they are, in fact, very often bound to an excess of production and consumption, far removed from the consecration of an eco-sustainable system.

its anatomical silhouette. Suffice to think historically of the migration of the waistline or its deletion. Nanni Strada at the beginning of the 1970s, for example, in moving away from the body-fashion system designed the

Giù dal corpo (“Off-Body”) collection, introducing into industrially produced clothing concepts of design planning methodology: a bidimensional structure inspired by the geometries of oriental clothing, freed from the tailormade tradition and from the dogmatic references of the anatomic silhouette: waistline and cuts. A decade later also saw the clothing design by Monica Bolzoni come to form part of a philosophy that distanced itself from the mainstream fashion system: her pieces entitled Bianca e Blue (White and Blue) put the garment-body relationship inside a grid of basic geometrical forms — the triangle, the circle and the rectangle — that embrace bodies, giving back their uniqueness. From the study of the forms we discover that here the question is not that of thinking “about the garment on the body” (as the designer affirms) but “about the body in the garment”.

In whatever case, one has clothing technologies which in their respective specificity represent an ethic and aesthetic of the garment which is aimed at promoting and enhancing the wearer’s creativity without restricting the dynamic nature of free interpretative and “performative” play.

Con lei abbiamo discusso dei limiti e delle disfunzioni del sistema della moda.

Cosa si dovrebbe fare per innovare il sistema della moda?

Il lavoro di innovazione dovrebbe essere condotto sui diversi fronti, della produzione, della comunicazione e del consumo. Per quanto riguarda la produzione: rendere totalmente illegali gli sweatshop sarebbe una bella mossa ad esempio. La comunicazione della moda, a tutti i livelli, nicchia o commerciale, si basa sull’idea che qualcuno sa meglio di altri cosa è cool e il consumatore deve attenersi: questo è una concezione molto vecchia del sistema che ancora funziona perché a chi fa i giornali (anche quelli online, intendo) conviene stare pigramente sullo scranno dello status quo e aderisce a un paradigma imposto dal mercato anche se non vale più, e le persone che li leggono sono insicure e in nessun modo spinte dalla società a essere libere. Così arriviamo ai consumatori: la moda oggigiorno è sopravvalutata, e la sua presenza costante nell’agenda di

tutti (ad esempio lo shopping inteso come consumo di abiti ormai si fa senza nessun rituale interessante) ci dovrebbe far pensare a quanto i valori del saper vedere e scegliere e amare e saper portare con eleganza, siano stati calpestati da una folla che vuole apparire agli altri e per farlo sparisce a sé stessa, e non in senso buono.

Sogno e ho insegnato più che ho potuto ai miei studenti un consumo consapevole che si insinua nella società dello spettacolo come un virus.

Cosa pensa della moda dei giovani?

Rispondo a questa domanda perché ho l’occasione di dire che mi sembra un buon esempio di domanda mal formulata: quali giovani? I quarantenni sono ancora giovani? La maggioranza di loro (provo a definire = gente che cerca un’ identità attraverso l’abito o le abitudini), approfitta di magazzini fast fashion per sfoggiare quello che il sistema dominante attraverso i derivati dei catwalk detta come capriccio di stagione. Molto consumo e poco arrosto. Poi ci sono quelli delle nicchie che sono vittime dello stesso gioco ma si credono più cool perché si vestono finto giapponese di vent’anni fa. Penso che consumino molto si divertano poco e si prendano troppo sul serio.

An interview with Amanda Montanari by Vieri Fidanza and Claudia Tambella Amanda Montanari has researched the alternatives to the mainstream fashion system: alternative fashion, alternative production and alternative forms of imagination.

Together with her we discussed the limitations and dysfunctions of the fashion system.

What ought to be done in order to “renovate” the fashion system?

The innovation work ought to be carried out on various fronts: production, communication and consumption. As regards production, making sweatshops totally illegal would be a big step forward, for example.

Fashion communication on all levels, whether regarding niche products or commercial ones, is based on the idea that somebody knows better than others what is “cool” and that the consumer is expected to comply with this, which is a very old conception of the system.

It still functions in this way because for the people who run and do the newspapers — and I also mean the online ones — it’s convenient to sit lazily on the bench of the status quo and endorse a paradigm imposed by the market, even if it no longer holds true. The people who read the papers are insecure and are in no way encouraged by society to be free. And at this point we come to the consumers. Today fashion is overrated (and overvalued). Its constant presence in everyone’s day-to-day life — for example, shopping understood as the consumption of clothing which is by now done without any kind of interesting ritual — ought to make us think to what extent the values of knowing how to see and choose, to love and know how to wear with elegance, have been trodden on by a mob that wants to appear to others: in order to do this it disappears from itself (and not in a good way). I’ve dreamt and taught to my students even more than I have been able about a conscious-based consumption that worms its way into society of show/spectacle/display like a virus.

What do you think about the fashion for young people?

I’ll answer because I have the opportunity to say that it seems to me as being a good example of a badly stated question. Which young people?

Are forty-year-olds still young? Most of them — my attempt at defining = people who are looking for an identity by way of clothing or habits — take advantage of “fast fashion” stores in order to flaunt what the dominant system by way of catwalk derivatives lays down as being the caprice of the season. A lot of consumption and little meatiness.

And there are those of the niches who are victims of the same game but who believe themselves to be “cooler” because they dress in a mock, twenty-year outdated Japanese fashion. I think they consume a lot, that they hardly enjoy themselves and that they take themselves too seriously.

vante. La moda dei giovani non c’è. Non “una”, quanto meno; e poi non è “moda”, ma sono forme di abbigliamento che identificano dei gruppi, delle appartenenze. E queste forme complesse di abbigliamento combinatorie utilizzano la moda e certi marchi piuttosto che altri. La “moda dei giovani” è una categoria che ha avuto una fortuna critica grazie appunto alle semplificazioni operate dai sociologi.

What should be done in order to innovate the fashion system?

As I see it it’s sufficiently innovative as it is. I don’t think that anyone would ask this question regarding the

“design system”.

What do you think about the fashion of young people?

I don’t understand what sense it has today to talk about the fashion of youngsters. In my opinion it’s a socio-cultural construction which has little importance. Young people’s

fashion doesn’t exist. Not “a” fashion, 70

at least. But, there again, it isn’t a “fashion” but forms of clothing which

identify groups, a “belonging to”. And these complex forms of combinatorial clothing use fashion and certain specific brand names rather than others.

The “fashion of young people” is a category that has enjoyed critical attention thanks to the simplification carried out by sociologists.

What advice would you give to young stylists who want to enter the fashion world?

Well to start with, let’s call them designers. The stylist was a very precise personality who can be placed in a point of time of the history of Italian fashion between the 1970s and the 1980s. Attend a good degree course which supplies a preparation that manages to combine techniques and reflection regarding fashion cultures.

Afterwards try to get an internship (apprenticeship): for this search a good form of exchange of ideas with a tutor is very important. In this sense it’s an obvious advantage if the internship is envisaged by the graduate course chosen by the student. This is our choice of action at the Università Iuav in Venice. We are without doubt a unique university in Italy as regards this aspect.

EN How do you imagine the food of the future? I don’t know, but I would like it to be healthy, ethical, tasty, ergonomic, and that helps me to control my body in a positive way, in a word: future food will be designed.

Vegetarian or vegan cuisine could firmly become part of our culture? It makes no sense to speak about vegetarian or vegan, it will be a new way of nutrition that will be not related to nature or natural ingredients.

Which feeding trends will appear in the future? And which ones will instead tend to disappear? Food which is functional will be perfect in all senses, and food which has a ritual function will be very specific and will tell stories.

Come immagina il cibo del futuro? Non lo so, ma vorrei che fosse sano, etico, gustoso, ergonomico e che mi aiuti a controllare il mio corpo in modo positivo. In una parola: il cibo del futuro sarà progettato.

La cucina vegetariana o vegana potrebbe diventare parte integrante della nostra cultura? Non ha senso parlare di vegetariano o vegano, sarà un nuovo modo di nutrirsi che non sarà connesso alla natura o agli ingre­ dienti naturali.

Quali tendenze alimentari in futuro appariranno, e quali tenderanno a scomparire? Il cibo funzionale sarà perfetto in tutti i sensi, e il cibo che ha una funzione rituale sarà molto specifico e servirà a raccontare storie.

EN What is your philosophy and your concept of food design? To think food as an object and therefore to design it.

In the past, food was considered a necessity. Over time it has changed its function, and it now does not have just the simple goal of feeding, but it has become also a luxury experience.

How could the sense of food and feeding change in the future? Nowadays food is a way to link ourselves to the real. This happens because we are more and more virtual, we work on virtual surfaces, we play computer games, we socialize and communicate online, food is the only needed real thing, and therefore helps to ritualize our real all day. In the future it will be a kind of parameter to structure the all day life with our real physical body.

Quale è la sua filosofia di food design?

Pensare il cibo come un oggetto, e quindi progettarlo. In passato il cibo era considerato una necessità.

Nel corso del tempo ha cambiato la sua funzione e non ha più il semplice scopo di sfamare, ma è diventato anche un’esperienza di lusso. Come potrebbe cambiare il senso di cibo e alimentazione nel futuro? Oggi il cibo è un modo per connetterci alla realtà, perché siamo sempre più virtuali: lavoriamo su superfici virtuali, usiamo videogiochi, socializziamo e comunichiamo online, il cibo è l’unica cosa reale di cui abbiamo bisogno, e quindi ci aiuta a ritualizzare tutta la nostra giornata reale. And one of these is the reorganization of the constructed landscape, giving value to the particularity of places and to local resources.

Today’s most interesting forms of architecture are the ones that offer a new consideration of places and not of form.

One regards the surface, transient, that is stated by means of the adjective “sustainable”: it doesn’t “undermine” the fact of carrying out architecture but simply adapts things to the laws in force. In this sense we are all sustainable. The other way of looking at sustainability is an in-depth one, at its roots. In this case the process to be carried out is radical. In fact, the prospect with regards to the world changes, not merely affecting architecture. We find ourselves in an extraordinary historical moment in which for the first time we have the chance to review, to have another look at our way

One of the things we have to learn again is to have visions of the world. Realizable utopias, as Yona Friedman would put it. During the last half century architecture has abandoned its ambitions in order to adapt to the market and carry out increasingly more spectacular architectural objects. The system of the “archistar” — the celebrity or star architect — has replaced the common architect. Today we’re at a turning point and we can allow ourselves the luxury to rethink the system which is tottering under its own weight. This, from a certain point of view, is a good thing which hasn’t happened for a long time. I repeat, we have the chance of rethinking our way

At present I’m a little worried by this. I’m above all concerned

about the compulsive and passive use of new technologies. Perhaps an antidote to technological consumerism might be to once again discover being together, “here and now”, giving life to the collective “body” in terms of its sensitive physicalness. Although perhaps I’m deluding myself. Perhaps I’m no longer capable of evaluating the real effects of this.

Perché dopo gli studi in fisica hai scelto un impiego molto più creativo come la grafica?

Non ho smesso di studiare fisica per mancanza di interesse. Al contrario, sono ancora più interessato alla fisica dopo aver studiato grafica e arti di quando ero ancora all’università.

Penso che quel che mi mancava era un’esplorazione giocosa dei con­ cetti che stavo apprendendo. Credo che la fisica e l’ingegneria possano essere processi estremamente crea­ tivi, anche se può sembrare il contra­ rio a un osservatore esterno, ma per raggiungere uno stato di esplorazione creativa in fisica, bisogna raggiungere il livello dottorale, e credo di essere stato troppo impaziente per arrivarci.

Quanto il tuo percorso creativo attuale è influenzato dai tuoi studi precedenti? È interessante notare che, dopo un percorso di dieci anni, guardandomi alle spalle mi sembra di essere tornato al punto di partenza: a livello pratico i miei lavori artistici sono prossimi alla programmazione di software, all’ingegneria meccanica ed elettro­ nica, e mi guadagno da vivere proget­ tando e programmando siti web. Per cui ho veramente un approccio del tutto diverso alle cose adesso, chia­ ramente, ma il mio lavoro attuale è decisamente basato sui miei studi precedenti. Quando ho cominciato a studiare grafica, non sapevo nulla di physical computing in generale. Ho dovuto imparare tutto, ma non mi spaventava per cui mi ci sono pron­ tamente buttato. Penso sia impor­ tante sottolinearlo, perché non vorrei che chiunque ci legga pensasse che è necessario studiare fisica e ingegneria prima di avere la possibilità di capire queste cose. È più facile che mai cominciare ora, vista la profusione di risorse online.

Come farà la tecnologia a rendere il design ancora più creativo in futuro?

La questione particolare con la tecno­ logia – o con la scienza in generale – è che può produrre idee, concetti e prospettive sul nostro ambiente veramente nuovi. Vedo la cultura contemporanea come un serbatoio di idee individuali che si ibridano costantemente le une con le altre, e da questo serbatoio possiamo pro­ durre opere creative. Ora, senza il processo scientifico sarebbe diffi­ cilissimo introdurre idee genuina­ mente nuove in questo serbatoio, e se non si è interessati alla ricerca scien­ tifica potrebbe sembrare che “tutto è stato fatto comunque, è inutile pro­ varci”. È vero se si considera questo serbatoio come statico. Ma se si fa attenzione alle nuove idee che ven­ gono introdotte nel serbatoio, qualsiasi nuova idea porterà anche con sé uno spazio completamente nuovo di combinazioni da esplorare. Per cui sì, penso che la tecnologia – e più preci­ samente il processo di ricerca scienti­ fica in generale – sia la forza motrice che permette a noi che siamo a valle di esplorare nuove idee e concetti nelle arti e nel design.

L’interazione fra persone attraverso reti virtuali è un tema che hai trattato in maniera intelligente. Pensi che que­ sta pratica renderà possibile un nuovo modo di comunicare in futuro?

Dunque, ho giocato con questa idea di comunicazione virtuale attraverso reti e oggetti per molto tempo e alla fine sono diviso fra due opinioni.

Ovviamente siamo in un momento d’oro per i social network e per i dispositivi mobili sempre connessi, e stiamo decisamente comunicando in modi nuovi. Quello che sto comin­ ciando a chiedermi è fin dove pos­ siamo arrivare prima di raggiungere una qualche forma di limite biologico delle nostre capacità cognitive: come specie, ci siamo evoluti per milioni di anni principalmente considerando il nostro ambiente diretto e locale, e avendo un’idea molto astratta e limi­ tata dello spazio non visibile e non immediato. Le risorse computazionali necessarie per fare l’una o l’altra cosa sono enormi! E questo è più o meno ciò che stiamo facendo con i social network oggi. Una volta pensavamo attivamente al nostro ambiente imme­ diato, e avevamo occasionali pensieri esterni quando pensavamo a chi non era presente, in un altro spazio o tempo. Adesso stiamo costantemente pensando a tutti quelli che cono­ sciamo, in ogni luogo del mondo, e a diverse scale temporali, tutto con­ temporaneamente: temo che questo stia cannibalizzando troppo le nostre risorse cognitive. Negli ultimi due anni mi sono drasticamente allontanato dai social network semplicemente perché mi sono scoperto incapace di gestire l’idrante delle informazioni multica­ nale che mi bombarda, e per questo mi chiedo se non siamo andati troppo in là e se non c’è un modo diverso, più tranquillo di comunicare.

EN Why, after your studies in physics, you chose such a more creative job as graphic design?

I did not stop studying physics due to a lack of interest. On the contrary, after studying graphic design and arts I am more interested in physics than I ever was while at university. I think that what I missed was a playful exploration of the ideas I was learning. I believe that physics and engineer­ ing can be extremely creative processes, although it might not appear so for an outside observer, but to reach this state of creative exploration of phys­ ics you need to reach PhD-level, and I think that I was just too impatient to get there.

How much are your previous studies are influencing your current creative path?

It is interesting to me that after this 10-year journey, looking back I am sort of back to the starting point: on a practical level, my artistic work is really closer to software programming, mechanical and electri­ cal engineering, and I earn my living by designing and programming websites. So I definitely have a totally different approach to these things now, clearly, but my current work is definitely grounded in my previous studies. One important thing is that it is grounded in the interest I have for engineering and programming. When I started studying graphic design, I did not know anything about physical computing in general. I had to learn everything, but it was not something that scared me so I read­ ily dived into it. I think it is important to note that, because I do not want anyone reading this to think that you must have studied physics and engineering before having a chance to understand these things.

It is easier than ever to get started now with the profusion of online resources.

How can technology help design getting even more creative in the future?

The particular thing with technology — or with science at large —, is that it is able to generate truly novel ideas, concepts and perspectives on our envi­ ronment. I see contemporary culture as a pool of individual ideas that are constantly hybridizing with each other, and out of that we can produce crea­ tive works. Now without the process of science we would have a very hard time introducing gen­ uinely new ideas to this pool, and if you are not interested in scientific research it might seem that “everything has been done anyway, there’s no point in trying”. That is true if you consider this pool of ideas as static. But if you pay attention to new ideas being introduced to that pool, any new idea will also bring with it an entirely new space of com­ binations to explore. So yes, I think that technol­ ogy, and more precisely, the process of scientific inquiry at large, is the driving force that allows us downstream to explore new ideas and concepts in art and design.

The interaction with people through virtual net­ works is a topic that you treat in a clever way. Do you think that this practice will make it possible to reach a new way to communicate in the future?

Well, I have been toying around this idea of virtual communication through networks and objects for a long time and in the end I have split opinions. Of course we are in a golden age of social networks and always-connected mobile devices, and we defi­ nitely are communicating in new ways. What I am starting to wonder is how far we can go until we reach some sort of biological limits of our cogni­ tive capabilities: as a species we evolved for millions of years mostly considering our direct, local envi­ ronment and having a very abstract and limited idea of the non-visible, non-immediate space. The com­ putational resources needed to do one or the other are huge! And this is pretty much what we are doing with social networks today. We used to only have in our active thoughts our immediate environment, and the occasional far-out thoughts when thinking of someone away, in another place or in another time. Now we are constantly thinking of everyone we know, anywhere in the world, and on so many different timescales, all at the same time, that I am concerned that it is simply cannibalizing too much of our cognitive resources. I have been in the last couple of years distancing myself drastically from social networks simply because I found myself not able to handle the firehose of multi-channel infor­ mation bombarding me, so it leads me to wonder if we have not gone a little too far and if there is not a further, quieter way of communicating.

Lei produce arte e la insegna da molti anni, nella sua esperienza ha avuto modo di incontrare molti giovani. Ha notato un cambiamento nel passare degli anni? Verso quali orizzonti sta andando la creatività dei giovani?

In questi ultimi anni abbiamo assistito all’avvento della tecnologia, dei mezzi di comunicazione di massa, dei com­ puter e di tutti i dispositivi digitali di cui oggi non riusciamo più a fare a meno, la nostra vita è diventata sempre più frenetica e condivisa in sistemi virtuali.

Il modo di esprimersi e di comunicare si è trasformato con più efficacia utiliz­ zando sistemi più veloci, creando pro­ getti basati sull’interattività. Ci sarà a mio avviso molta più attenzione per l’attualità, progetti legati alla vita reale e a problematiche sociali.

La scuola ci insegna e ci prepara a vivere in questa società. Cambiando la società cambia la scuola, ma lei pensa che cambiando la scuola si possa cambiare la società?

La scuola cerca di impartire le basi per crescere con un’istruzione gene­ rale, difficilmente riesce a preparare al vivere in questa società, è ancora lon­ tana dal rapporto con il mondo del lavoro. La società è cambiata e conti­ nua ad evolversi, ma la scuola non si è evoluta, io credo fermamente che cambiando la scuola migliorerebbe la società. La scuola ha bisogno di avere dei laboratori più all’avanguardia, con la possibilità di poter fare più attività pratica.

L’arte può contribuire a cambiare la scuola e il futuro? E come potrebbe farlo?

Certo che sì, innanzitutto dando all’arte lo stesso valore di altre materie ritenute più importanti. L’arte anzi potrebbe migliorare anche le altre materie, bisogna vederla come un approccio creativo da attualizzare in tutte le materie, perché può essere un sistema stimolante per modi di inse­ gnamento alternativi più efficaci.

Come pensa che si evolverà l’arte in futuro?

L’arte e il design potranno darci delle alternative all’omologazione di massa che il sistema capitalistico ci impone.

Si evolveranno in nuove innovazioni, sperimenteranno sistemi alternativi e creeranno molteplici soluzioni sempre più semplici ed efficaci per renderci la vita più facile e bella.

EN You have created art and taught for many years and have had the chance to meet a lot of young people. Have you noticed a change over the years?

Towards what types of “horizons”; is the creativity of youngsters going?

In recent years we’ve seen the encroachment of technology, of the means of mass communica­ tion, of computers and all the digital devices that today we can’t manage to do without. Our lives have become increasingly more frenetic and shared within virtual systems. The way of expressing one­ self and of communicating has been transformed with more efficacy by using faster systems, by cre­ ating projects based on interactivity. In my opinion there will be much more attention paid to daily rea­ lity, to projects connected to real life and to social problems. School teaches and prepares us to live in this society.

Changing society changes school. But do you think that a changing school can change society?

School tries to give the bases for growing up by way of a general education. Although it hardly manages to prepare youngsters to live in this society: it’s still too far away from the relationship with the world of work. Society has changed and continues to evolve whereas school hasn’t. I firmly believe that changing the school system would improve society.

The school system needs to have more avant-garde laboratories, with the possibility of being able to carry out more practical activity.

Can art contribute towards changing both school and the future? And how could it do this?

Certainly it can, first and foremost by attributing art with the same value as other subjects that are considered more important. In fact, art could also enhance the other subjects. It’s necessary to see it as a creative approach to carry out in all subjects because it can be a stimulating system for more effective alternative ways of teaching.

How do you think art will evolve in the future?

Art and design will be able to offer us alternatives to the mass homogenization imposed on us by the capitalist system. If they evolve in new forms of creativity then they’ll experiment alternative systems and will create increasingly simpler and more efficacious manifold solutions in order to make life both easier and more beautiful.

Durante il suo lavoro utilizza i mezzi tecnologici, come la stampa 3D, per realizzare oggetti di Design. Come vede il futuro per il lavoro artigianale?

Le nuove tecnologie costituiscono una grande potenzialità per il lavoro artigianale. Per esempio consentono anche a una persona singola di con­ trollare tutta la filiera di un prodotto, dalla progettazione, alla produzione, fino alla vendita al cliente finale, senza per forza richiedere investimenti importanti. Fenomeni della rivolu­ zione digitale come l’open source o il crowdfunding aprono anche agli artigiani opportunità fino a pochis­ simo tempo fa impensabili.

In che modo l’utilizzo di questi mezzi favorisce lo sviluppo della creatività di una persona?

Personalmente trovo interessante lavorare con il codice in fase di proget­ tazione, utilizzando strategie di design parametrico con linguaggi di program­ mazione come Processing. La stampa 3D mi permette poi di trasformare il codice in materia, di sperimentare con vari materiali, di coniugare il “fatto a macchina” con il “fatto a mano”.

La tecnologia sta mettendo in pericolo il futuro dei piccoli artigiani?

Sono convinta che le nuove tecno­ logie costituiscano al contrario una risorsa essenziale per i piccoli arti­ giani. Per esempio, mai come oggi è stato possibile raggiungere un numero così vasto di persone anche con mezzi limitati: basti pensare alle potenzialità dell’e-commerce per distribuire i pro­ pri prodotti o alle possibilità offerte dai social media per raggiungere pos­ sibili clienti e comunicare il proprio messaggio su scala globale.

Da sempre l’artigiano ha saputo sfrut­ tare gli strumenti a sua disposizione ed adattarli alle sue esigenze, le tec­ nologie digitali possono contribuire a salvare e valorizzare mestieri antichi e a traghettarli nel ventunesimo secolo.

Consuelo Keller, dopo gli studi di archeologia e interaction design, ha fondato il brand di gioielli [ digimorphé ], che si basa sulle tecniche della modellazione e stampa 3D.

EN During your work you use technological means — 3D printing, for example — to produce Design objects. How do you see the future for artisan work?

The new technologies offer considerable potential for craft work. For example, they allow a single per­ son to control all the stages in the creation of a pro­ duct: from the project planning phase to production and sale to the client, without necessarily demanding a sizeable investment. Phenomena of the digital revolution such as open-source software or recourse to crowdfunding also give possibilities to artisans that until only a short time ago were unthinkable.

In what way does the use of these means help develop a person’s creativity?

Personally speaking I find it interesting to work with coding during the project phase, using parame­ tric design strategies with programming languages like Processing. And the use of 3D printing allows me to then transform the coding into matter, to experiment with various materials and to combine the “machine made” with the “made by hand”.

Is technology endangering the future of the indi­ vidual artisan?

On the contrary. I’m convinced that the new tech­ nologies are an essential asset for the individual artisan or very small craft business. For example, never before has it been possible to reach such a vast number of people, even with limited means at one’s disposal. Suffice to think of the potential of e-commerce for the distribution of one’s products or the possibilities offered by social media to reach possible clients/customers, communicating one’s message globally. The artisan has always known how to most fully exploit the instruments on hand and adapt them to his or her needs. Digital tech­ nologies can contribute towards saving and also promoting age-old crafts, accompanying them into the 21st century.

After having studied archaeology and interaction design, Consuelo Keller founded the digimorphé brand of jewellery which is based on modelling techniques and 3D printing.

What future?

Interviews with former students of SUPSI by Stefan Kojic

EN We asked both former students as well as those still studying at SUPSI’s Department of the Environment, Constructions and Design how they imagined the future while they were still studying and what prospects had been opened — or hoped would be opened — after obtaining their degree. Each person could answer anonymously or otherwise although indicating the course of study and graduation year. We asked two questions:

Notwithstanding my university formation and acquired work experience, I imagine the future as being a new educative field. I think I still have a great deal to learn, ranging from work strategies to the weighing up of priorities.

To be quite honest I’ve never had time to think about the future.

Fortunately the courses proposed by the university took up all my time — and more besides. I’ve never been a person who thinks too far ahead.

I live from day to day and this is also clearly reflected in my projects.

At the moment I’m independent and so every door is “open”. It’s necessary to make yourself known in the right situations and then the work arrives.

While I was preparing my Bachelor thesis I decided that I wanted to become an illustrator and I understood that I had to continue my studies in order to achieve this goal. I knew that the illustration work market was a very difficult and very underestimated one but I was — and still am — determined to become an illustrator.

After graduating I began my illustration studies at ISIA in Urbino and, the following year, I was admitted at part of the Erasmus Programme to EnsAD in Paris. These three experiences in three different countries were absolutely wonderful occasions for coming to terms both with internationally renowned professionals and with always different visual cultures.

At the moment I’m preparing my degree thesis. I’m anxious about entering the work market although I’m sure that I’ll make my dream come true.

Appena conseguito il bachelor in Comunicazione visiva ho cominciato i miei studi in illustrazione all’ISIA di Urbino e l’anno successivo sono stata ammessa come erasmus all’EnsAD di Parigi. Queste tre esperienze, in tre nazioni differenti, sono state delle grandissime occasioni per confrontarmi con professionisti di fama internazionale e con culture visive sempre diverse. Ora sto preparando la mia tesi di laurea, ho l’ansia per l’ingresso nel mondo del lavoro ma sono sicura che realizzerò il mio sogno.

Mentre preparavo la tesi di bachelor in Comunicazione visiva ho deciso che volevo diventare un’illustratrice e ho capito che dovevo proseguire gli studi per diventarlo. Sapevo che quello dell’illustrazione è un mercato difficile e molto sottovalutato ma ero, e sono ancora, molto determinata.
