Part of FIAC’s ‘Private Itinerary’ since 2006, this annual event is a celebration of the long-standing links between Guerlain and the contemporary arts scene. EDITORIAL Don't touch my ocean Here we are with the October issue, the final volume that concludes this intensive year, the most important issue of the entire season, the one that debuts in conjunction with the Monaco Yacht Show, the quintessence-event of extreme luxury. Do you know more exclusive events?

This fourth chapter 2019 is dedicated to an important theme, which is currently at the centre of many initiatives also in other sectors, most recently at the Venice Film Festival (Marevivo Onlus #StopSingleUsePlastic). The theme of protecting the oceans is very dear to us today, we hope that all this propaganda will then translate into concrete actions. The Guerlain exhibition presented in the first pages reminds us that the whole planet is at risk, not just the oceans. Let's act well or we will become extinct like the dinosaurs. The Monaco Yacht Show opens its doors on September 25th, and given the fleet of megayachts present this year it is expected to be a brilliant year indeed: once you have enjoyed the Fashion Week 2019, from Prada to Gucci, it will be the turn of the catwalks in Montecarlo where you will be able to attend an unforgettable parade like the one that will see two beautiful LĂźrssen yachts, Tis and Amadea shine in the city of wonders. Don't miss Dragon, the flagship built by Columbus Yachts and Riva 50M. Each boat will have its own story to tell, as explained by Arch. Bernardo Zuccon in his long interview collected at his studio in Rome, and as also states Oleg Tinkov, Russian owner of La Datcha and owner of the entire collection of properties with the same name.

We close this year with great satisfaction and thanking all those who participated contributing to enrich our contents. We promise to face a 2020 with the same style and elegance, always searching for original stories and offering innovative interpretations. But before thinking about the new year, we want to enjoy the events of the season, from the Cannes Yachting Festival to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, yachting events where Superyacht Digest is media partner and active presence always ready to detect the most interesting news. We have already anticipated something in this issue presenting Sirena 88, the projects by German Yacht Couture, Team For Design, Hydro Tec ... for all those new projects that will be presented in the coming weeks, our appointment is in January 2020! As an atypical and fearless artist, Philippe does not hesitate to highlight the hypocrisy of denial, sometimes in a rather spicy and trashy way.

Very flashy colours, a delightful way of staging, and his signature that he directly draws on the body of his models, mark out Philippe’s works. Mindful about the smallest details, the artist attaches great importance to the symmetry, the perspectives and the balance of the different elements of his works.

Philippe Shangti is a complete artist with an extraordinary talent to transcribe his art pieces into scenic performances totally imagined by him. Thus he directs the full artistic conception by creating his own universe. Among his notorious pieces, he signed several ‘tag’ works such as the very famous “Enjoy Your Fucking Dinner”.

THE ARTIST’S PROVOCATIVE AND GLAMOROUS UNIVERSE IS THE EXPRESSION OF HIS IMAGINATION, AIMED TO ACTIVELY DISTURB MINDS. His art comes in a variety of photographs, artistic concepts but also in limited edition sculptures. His work is exhibited in many countries in the best art galleries in Europe, the USA and Asia. Constantly looking for new ideas and challenges, the artist also created special works featuring sports personalities, collectors and their families. In addition, he collaborates with many luxury brands as part of the development of a range of products steeped with his art and his universe.

With his experience, the artist organizes ephemeral private events on the international scene where he manages to recreate the artistic atmosphere he is immersed in, in order to carry the visitors away and intensely connect them to his artistic world.

After living in St Tropez for more than 10 years, the artist wished to upgrade his career and decided to move his studios and all his teams to the Principality of Andorra where he experiences now a new energy.

After being a model, Philippe was claimed by managers of various establishments. He whispered in their ears some artistic pieces of advice and creative projects from his imagination.

Described by some as the modern day Guy Bourdin for his avant-garde and daring style, Shangti’s work is controversial in his aim at breaking down taboos. Shangti’s work has become instantly recognizable amongst galleries and collectors since first exhibiting his photographs in his own restaurant. The flawless detail, humorous undertones and lack of subtlety are classic hallmarks of Shangti’s work. His reputation has expanded across France with shows in Megève Cannes and Paris. Shangti has attracted top contemporary art collectors and celebrities such as Eva Longoria, Tony Parker and Eve Angeli. This fascination with celebrity is also reflected in his work with nods to certain global megastars, such as Michael Jackson, Megan Fox and Eva Mendes. Much of his work undercuts the direct reference to celebrity, but the aesthetic of glamour and excess is still conveyed through his exhibitions.

A Tropezian businessman, who saw all his potential, soon spotted him. Then, Philippe decided to settle down in Saint Tropez, where he let his boldness and talent explode. Then, he gave birth to his first futuristic and out-of-standard artistic concepts. As a messenger of modern times, the genius finds all his inspiration in this new environment where he thrives. The artist’s provocative and glamorous universe is the expression of his imagination, aimed to actively disturb minds. Through his series of photographic artworks like “Art vs Drugs”, “Luxury Overdose”, “No Prostitution Here” or “No Pollution Here” in 2017, Philippe skilfully manages

PROTECT THE OCEAN

Our oceans are slowly turning into a plastic soup, and the effects on ocean life are chilling. Discarded plastic fishing lines trap and entangle turtles and seabirds, and plastic pieces of all sizes choke and clog the stomachs of creatures who mistake it for food, from tiny zooplankton to whales. Plastic is now entering every level of the ocean food chain and is even ending up in the seafood on our plates. But it doesn’t have to be this way. That’s why we are campaigning to end the flow of plastic into our oceans".

The cover chosen for this October issue is dedicated to a topic that is becoming more and more debated: marine conservation and ocean protection. Many actions have been globally undertaken by various institutions - public, private and non-profit environmental organisations - which have expressed their commitment to treat this problem more seriously, hopefully with much more efficient solutions. The current response is not enough. Action is being taken in many different places, by many different actors. But there are huge gaps. "We must prioritize our efforts where it matters the most. From climate change and plastic pollution, to mining and overfishing, the threats facing our oceans get more urgent every day. The vast areas outside countries’ national waters are in the most danger, as they don’t have any proper protection - leaving whales, turtles and dolphins at risk", states Greenpeace.

THE SUPERYACHT INDUSTRY'S ROLE

The superyacht community - boat builders and yacht owners - is becoming more and more conscious about environmental problems. As an industry, we are seeing great initiatives in support for ocean conservation. Events and partnerships with marine institutions are bringing lots of attention to this matter, carrying out own campaigns to educate the wider public around this issue. Also superyacht owners are already making a difference, such as by avoiding plastic and making sure that all rubbish is disposed of correctly.

According to the non-governmental environmental organization, healthy oceans are the life support system for our planet, providing 97 percent of the Earth’s livable habitat and a home to more than 700,000 species. The oceans are vital to human health as well, providing jobs, enjoyment and food to billions of people. Half of the oxygen we breathe is generated by our oceans. "Right now it is estimated that up to 12 million metric tons of plastic – everything from plastic bottles and bags to microbeads – ends up in our oceans each year. That’s a truckload of trash every minute. Traveling on ocean currents, this plastic is now turning up in every corner of our planet, from Florida beaches to uninhabited Pacific islands. It is even being found trapped in Arctic ice.

Scientists say the wave of extinction facing the ocean in the coming century could be the worst since the dinosaur age. If we don’t change the way we do things, and fast, we are on track to cause irreversible damage to the ocean and the collapse of some of the most important food sources in the world. Fortunately, if we work together we are within reach of a world that respects our oceans, their inhabitants and the people who depend on them.

he average value of the yachts on display is now a staggering €27 million. This is a far cry from the very first edition of MYS in 1991, when there were just 32 yachts moored in Port Hercules averaging 31 metres in length. This year’s fleet will feature larger superyachts compared with 2018. It is hard to overestimate the importance and prestige of MYS as a barometer that measures the state of the large yacht industry. When business is booming, there is a tremendous vibe among the yacht brokers and builders walking the dock. But in a sector still adapting to the aspirations of younger buyers and charterers, continued prosperity is not guaranteed and there is no room for complacency. As a proactive industry player, MYS is embracing change by adopting development strategies that deliberately target the emerging superyacht clientele.

Already filled to capacity each year and occupying much of Port Hercules, there is little or no opportunity for physical growth in Monaco. Instead, the show organisers are focusing on delivering the best platform for business and the most efficient solutions for exhibitors to liaise with clients. One area of improvement, for example, has been optimising the layout into thematic zones to provide more fluid circulation around the quays and tents, and allow visitors to concentrate on their own sectors of interest.

The temptation for any show aimed at end-users is to spread the net as wide as possible and be all things to all people, but MYS is taking the opposite tack by prioritising a specific visitor profile. The slight drop in overall attendance (2% in 2018 down on 2017) reflects the drive towards lower densities around the port, which results in a more rewarding experience for prospective clients. Indeed, brokers and builders spoke of a higher number of visitors seriously intending to buy or charter.

“We work to offer the most prestigious superyachting event to the new generation of customers”, confirms Gaëlle Tallarida, General Manager of MYS. “Our responsibility is to offer our visitors an entertaining and instructive plunge into the world of superyachting, while serving the interest of the

THE SAPPHIRE EXPERIENCE MYS is in constant contact with yacht builders, brokers and industry suppliers throughout the year in order to gather feedback and anticipate their needs and those of their customers. The Sapphire Experience is the program dedicated to premium clients to enhance their show experience and help them take their first steps in the often-bewildering world of luxury yachting. The bespoke program includes a Concierge Service that coordinates private visits aboard superyachts on display, as well as a calendar of festivities during the four-day event.

MONACO YACHT SUMMIT

Since being introduced to the MYS agenda in 2016, the annual Monaco Yacht Summit immediately prior to the show has become a key event for clients and their advisors looking to enter or better understand the world of yachting. Attended by qualified representatives, family offices and private investors, the Summit includes a series of informative panel discussions with acknowledged experts from across the superyacht industry. On Tuesday, September 24, 2019, the 4th edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit will address an audience of potential yacht owners, charterers, their advisors and family offices. The aim of the event is to provide these delegates with insights and understanding into different aspects of the superyacht sector.

TENDERS & TOYS EXHIBITION

By providing access to secluded bays, transits between the mother ship and dry land, or simply an exhilarating high-speed ride, tenders give a younger clientele their first taste of the superyacht experience. Moreover, the stable of water toys – from inflatables to electric surfboards and mini submarines – is always high on the list of priorities for sports-minded charter clients.

THE NEW UPPER DECK LOUNGE

The Upper Deck Lounge will offer top-notch amenities on two floors to welcome the yachting customers and enhance their visit experience of the MYS. The show’s reception and catering area will welcome all visitors in a luxurious environment furnished by the MYS topof-the-range partners: the ground floor is dedicated to luxury exhibitors, a bar with an outdoor terrace, while the first floor will host the show restaurant and a VIP lounge with a panoramic view over Port Hercules. Less about footfall and more about providing a quality service to the growing number of international visitors intending to purchase or charter a yacht, these initiatives will help ensure that MYS maintains its global status as the superyacht show par excellence. Today more than ever before, MYS is about promoting the superyacht lifestyle to a high-end clientele through tailor-made experiences.

CAR DECK FOR COLLECTORS AND ENTHUSIASTS

Since 2016, well-thought-of automakers and niche brands of tailor-made and customised cars meet up at the Car Deck exhibition of Monaco Yacht Show. Luxury cars go hand in hand with luxury yachting and the Car Deck exhibition of prestige and one-off automobiles, some of which are available for test drives by prospective clients, has been a big hit with VIP visitors regardless of age for the last four years.

25 - 28 SEPTEMBRE 2019 PORT HERCULE, MONACO NEW OPENING HOURS: FROM 11AM TO 7.30PM The MYS changes its opening hours and will welcome attendees, later this year, from 11am to 7.30pm (Saturday 28th September: 11am – 7pm). The goal is to offer a timetable that corresponds better to the visiting times preferred by private clients. The new schedule will also ease the relentless intensity of the show and create a more pleasant experience for visitors and exhibitors.

This September, connoisseurs of fine machinery will be enthralled by the thirty or so stunning models on full display on Quai Antoine Ier.

Brabus will come back again with a range of converted Mercedes-Benz cars. The German specialists in the transformation of vehicles from the three-pointed star brand will also exhibit ultra-exclusive and exciting powerboats via their subsidiary Brabus Marine. Collectors of MBZ classic cars will also enjoy the distinguished selection of genuine vintage cars from the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.

Lovers of classic American muscle cars will be dazzled by the genuine Shelby models back again in Monaco. Gentleman Car, the exclusive dealer in Europe, will display the time-honoured CS GT40 MKI and the legendary Cobra 289 FIA and Cobra 427 roadsters, hand-crafted with total respect for the spirit of the original models. If you’re going to give your old sports car new life, you’ll resolutely entrust it to LLM-Mecasport, the Belgian garage specialing in the restoration of prestige cars and especially classic Porsche cars, without ever distorting the authenticity of the model.

The Heritage Collection by Overfinch, leading creator of bespoke Range Rover vehicles since 1975, will make its worldwide debut at the MYS. The British brand will display customised versions of the iconic Land Rover and Range Rover models. Garage Hotel will certainly appeal to passionate drivers of iconic cars: the company builds state-ofthe-art replicas of storied models like the Cobra or GT40 and Lola T76 for amazing road trip itineraries.

New to the Car Deck, Z’Art redesigns the passenger compartment of luxury cars. Leading player in automotive tuning on the Russian market with 140 expert technicians who work on top-flight passenger VIP-lounges inside SUVs and business minivans, Z’Art will exhibit a range of its latest customised creations to MYS visitors. Titan Motorcycle Co will find their place at this year’s Car Deck and unveil their jaw-dropping retro-styled bikes. The Austrian-based company will present oneoff customised models including the Titan Bavarian Bobber BMW R50-3, Titan Xaver BMW K100, Titan One Honda CB350 and Titan BlueFalcon YamahaMT-01.

What are the major challenges that arise each year for the organization team? GT: "The MYS represents the world’s greatest event of superyachts set over 42,000 sqm of exhibition areas and welcomes 30,000 participants over four days downtown one of the tiniest countries in the world. So you can imagine the organisation of the show itself is our very first challenge. A real logistics challenge for our team and all suppliers that work with us to secure the good setting-up and dismantling of the show.

What are your actions in favor of customers and visitors as a networking hub?

GT: "Aside the quality of the exhibition, we also have to upgrade the quality of our services every year to enhance the visitor’s experience at the show. For instance, this year, the show’s Upper Deck Lounge – the luxury exhibition and catering area in the heart of the show – will be completely transformed on two floors. This will be the social area of the show where visitors, yacht owners, or the privileged clients of the show can meet up with their peers and relish the moment in a fine environment.

Then, with an industry that has been changing over the last years with new customers and new expectations, we also have to make sure the products and services exhibited meet the demanding expectations of the visitors. There are

How does a family spend their typical day at the MYS? Are there any side activities you organize to make their stay as rich as possible?

We have developed the Sapphire Experience program. This is the MYS official visit program specifically dedicated to visitors interested in chartering or purchasing a yacht. This program is reserved in limited edition and – via its concierge service – helps the prospective superyacht end-user clients to visit enter the industry more easily and meet the key actors. The Sapphire Experience completes the Monaco Yacht Summit we’ve been organising for four years. On September 24, the 4th annual edition of the Monaco Yacht Summit will address topics on yachting to a new audience but also yacht owners or charterers, interested in better understanding the aspects of yachting. Lürssen has built a reputation for their expertise in creating gargantuan custom superyacht builds and Amadea is no exception. Originally known as Project Mistral, Amadea launched from the German yard in 2017. “Amadea is an absolutely unique superyacht; she cannot be compared to any other vessel in the world”, says Julie Stewart, Director of Imperial. According to Stewart the project – as with all Imperial projects – was developed with all the key parties working in close conjunction to create a yacht that was entirely tailored to the owner and his family.

“We are proud to have worked with Espen Oeino and Francois Zuretti and to benefit from their creativity, with everyone involved bringing fresh ideas to the table”, she adds. “Because our relationships are very strong and have become true friendships over the years, Amadea couldn’t have been anything else than a fantastic achievement for all our respective companies. It is hard to do justice to the scale of Amadea until you see her in person. At 4420GT, with five decks and an 18m beam she offers a vast amount of space, and every area on board has been thoughtfully designed to maximize her generous proportions. Outside, Oeino’s design is striking and the three dimensional profiles of the deck overhangs and covered balconies create an elegant exterior look. An ornamental albatross, which serves as the figurehead, sits above the anchor wingdoors. Inside, Amadea’s opulent interior is highly detailed, all hand finished by skilled craftsmen and women. A double-height atrium gives the feel of a ballroom and everywhere you turn a different detail catches your eye, including the stunning marquetry, marble inlays, polished woods and glasswork. The devil is in the detail and it is clear the sheer time and effort that was poured into making Amadea a reality. She is a masterpiece.

Stewart notes that the interior is particularly special. “Francois Zuretti and his experienced team did a fantastic job with the interior, from the double-height ceiling on the main deck with the atrium overlooking the owner’s deck, to the exceptional winter garden on the sun deck”, says Stewart. “Everything about Amadea’s interior is a symphony of tailor-made furniture and the finest materials including leathers, fabrics, marbles and more”. Lürssen applied their skill in yacht building to the project, using clever techniques to optimize the design and keep weights as low as possible. Superstructure decks were built entirely of aluminium, to save around 200T compared to steel, with the decks built upside down in a separate hall to avoid any contamination with steel. The top deck was fixed on after she departed the shed, due to her sheer height. Following final completion work she undertook sea trials before delivering to her happy owner. Powered by twin MTU 20V 4300KW (total 8600KW) engines, she has a range of 8000nm at 13 knots, and underwater stabilisers deliver exceptional comfort.

Once the client had conveyed their overall brief for the project to Imperial, he left it to the management team to craft a one-of-a-kind yacht with a huge number of spaces, each tailored to a different purpose. “The client trusted us to reflect his vision in Amadea and everything we did came back to the question of what he wanted to achieve with the yacht”, says Stewart. The features on board are almost too numerous to mention individually but for Stewart a few key spaces stood out as particularly suiting the owner. “We created the ideal spa area for him, with a sea terrace offering the best point of view from the Moroccan salon; we developed with him a fantastic sun deck with the best AV/ IT system for entertainment and built a bespoke Jacuzzi that could transform in a proper band stage at night to enjoy late parties; we also helped to achieve his vision of a luxurious but fully functional interior full of natural lights with larger

Able to welcome up to 16 guests and 36 crew, all guest accommodation on Amadea was designed around the motto “for the guest, only the best”. There are seven spacious ensuite cabins in addition to the owner’s suite. The VIP cabin has its own lobby and saloon, bedroom with two king beds and an expansive bathroom. Two double cabins are on the bridge deck and five guest suites, including three doubles, a twin and twin VIP, are on the main deck. A bonus space is the meeting room on the lower deck which has a single sofa bed and a private entrance, adding an additional sleeping option if needed. 33

centerpiece that looks out over the ocean. The aft terrace on the bridge deck, with a real fire pit, is a popular gathering spot, and leads directly into the cinema room – perfect for hosting movie nights. The sundeck boasts views across the ocean, a Jacuzzi and a breathtaking winter garden for year round use.

Of course the private owners deck is one of the most impressive spaces on board, stretching from bow to stern to create an entire apartment dedicated entirely to the owner. The build team designed this to be a real retreat, where the owner can live autonomously if needed and in total privacy. Private balconies overlook the sea and a separate staircase allows access to the bridge and main deck. The owner’s many different spaces include an office, private gym and wellness hub, library, bar and deck that is ideally suited to hosting intimate dinner parties.

On the water’s edge the multi-purpose swim platform was designed to be a base for multiple activities, from sunbathing to water sports. A vast tender garage is packed with watertoys and tenders, including two custom built tenders – a 11m Windy Custom Limousine tender and an 11m Windy Custom Open tender – each with an albatross figurehead to match the mother ship. Side boarding access allows guests to arrive and depart the yacht with ease, and the large helideck on the forward deck allows easy movement on and off the vessel and direct access to the owner’s private quarters.

Throughout the rest of the vessel there are no shortage of different areas for guests to enjoy and a white marble staircase and glass lift connect the decks in a stylish way. Main gathering spots include the main saloon and the more relaxed skylounge. The main saloon connects with a social bar space that then flows neatly out to the main aft deck. A full length dining table stretches the full width of the main saloon and the intricately designed bar is kept well stocked by the extra-large wine cellar, located in the tank deck. Up in the skylounge the scene is set for luxurious relaxation with a real wood burning fire, relaxed lounge seating, games tables and much more.

In conclusion, Amadea is an example of what can be achieved when some of the industry’s finest come together to create a truly unique yacht. The creativity that has gone in to Amadea is a reflection of the incredible skillsets on offer to those who choose to build a custom yacht. “All our efforts were rewarded by seeing the happiness of our client enjoying his vessel on a daily basis”, says Stewart. Many of the yacht owners around the world would tell you they want a vessel which includes having liberty at sea to enjoy precious time with their family. For Amadea this is true: this vessel is thought, designed and built to have the most memorable family moments aboard, and this quality time was in the center of every discussion we had. From the sea terrace, to the Moroccan saloon and the bespoke Jacuzzi, everything was designed with the family in mind".

What are her most spectacular features?

"From your first step on board, the impressive design with striking caps above the front of each deck will immediately catch your eye. he craftsmen and women that comprise the team of Lürssen are, undeniably, experts in the creation of some of the most complex superyachts in the world. One of the few luxury yacht builders with the capabilities to pull off such a technical feat at their facilities in Bremen, the Lürssen fleet consists of a staggering 20 superyachts exceeding 100 metres in length - topping that list being no other than the longest yacht in the world, the 180-metre Azzam. Understandably, the vast majority of these projects have been kept fiercely confidential. Though the exterior design is often hard to disguise as a yacht of such size and prestige cruises around the world, interior details are usually particularly secretive, fully enclosed from the eyes of everyone but the lucky few. With the delivery of their latest yacht, the 111-metre Winchdesigned Tis, however, all eyes are welcome. So what's the reason behind being able to share the yacht in all her glory? Built in close collaboration with an experienced owner and well-seasoned charter client, Tis was built with charter in mind. This not only meant designing a yacht together with Winch Design to cater to the needs and expectations of the world's most discerning charter clients, as one of the most exciting and, indeed, expensive charter yachts on the market, opening up the doors to Tis's exquisite entirety ensures that she bursts onto the charter market like never before - the move of a particularly charter-savvy owner. "Upon delivery this summer, Tis became one of the largest yachts in the world available for charter", comments Michael Bremen, Sales Director of Lürssen. "With this in mind, it is in the interest of the client to introduce the yacht to a discerning audience and to show off her beauty. For the shipyard, it is a great and unique opportunity for which we are very grateful".

The owner's influence was not confined to optimal charter operation and marketing, however. The owner was involved in every aspect of the construction of the yacht, with the team describing him as an important influence throughout her entire build. Considering the benefits of working with a knowledgeable and highly involved client, Bremen continues: "It is a big help if the client is an experienced yacht owner or yacht charterer. The client knows exactly his or her own needs but also their families' and guests' needs. The client is then normally more involved in the building process, which also helps in making critical decisions along the way". Measuring 111-metres with a beam of 16.85 metres and an impressive volume of 4,500 GT, Tis is built to PYC classification and accommodates up to 18 guests onboard. For those 18 special guests, there is something unique awaiting on the inside, where the clear synergy between prestigious shipyard, world-renowned design team and experienced owner and management team comes into play. As with all 100+ metre projects, the interior design is not the only spectacular thing about Tis and features onboard certainly abound. Across her six decks are two helipads, a 12-metre swimming pool on the main deck, a meticulously designed spa and hammam area, an outdoor cinema for cosy nights at sea, and a Parisian LadurĂŠe-inspired tearoom. Performance-wise, she is powered by twin 3,200 kW engines, serving up a comfortable cruising speed of 12 knots and a top speed of 18 knots. An autonomous range of 7,000 nm provides true ocean-going capabilities.

Her interiors take their inspiration from iconic residences and geographies around the world. They're inspired by design details and colour schemes which have fixated and impressed for hundreds of years, and the fact that these details have remained for the most part, unchanged throughout history, means that they have already proved themselves to be timeless. The charm of Tis however, is that while taking inspiration from these briefs, Winch Design has seamlessly integrated contemporary styling and features, updating these inspirations and ultimately rendering her interiors light and fresh, yet wonderfully opulent. Her exterior is classically elegant, her lime-washed oak and navy colour scheme is head-turning, yet classical: she has an undisputedly timeless silhouette.

Moran Yacht & Ship acted as project managers from inception to delivery, and were another essential component in the successful design, build and delivery of Tis. Boasting years of experience working with the Lürssen team on several previous superyacht projects, Bremen describes the benefits of working in a tried-and-tested team: "Having a team which has worked several times together is very helpful for such complex new builds like Tis. Each team knows the strong and weak points of the other team, is completely aware of the working processes and knows the relevant people very well. It makes things much easier in the coordination of what is an incredibly complex construction process".

As with any complex new build project, there were challenges. "Large voids in the structure of a ship, such as the aft saloon or the main atrium are always a challenge on a yacht, and we are proud that we have been able to achieve this yet again", continues Bremen. "The request for high ceilings in the owner's area and its knock-on effect resulted in a more complex ship structure and more difficult coordination. The whole team is excited that she turned out to be such a graceful yacht that will allow her passengers to enjoy yachting to the fullest in total comfort, luxury and quality".

SPA

Another beautiful and unique feature onboard is the spa, which is situated on the Bridge Deck. It features a playful citrus theme, taking inspiration from the island of Capri. The Lemon Grove is a dedicated relaxation feature, with a honey onyx vanity and mosaic floor. Throughout the spa, the stone floors have been hand-chipped to give a soft, aged feel. Jasmine notes in the artwork alongside a jasmine scent throughout creates a true sensory experience. Additionally, each day head on board Tis is unique, acting as a little jewellery box on each floor.

"Tis undertook her maiden voyage to Gibraltar upon delivery this summer and departed Lürssen's facilities in mid-June", Bremen concludes. "We look forward to her cruising the Seven Seas and turning heads wherever she goes for years to come".

Another stand out feature are the eight guest cabins, each representing a different geographic destination or iconic residence around the world. Each has an entirely unique identity, and every single element has been carefully crafted to enjoy an astounding level of coherence within their individual themes, with the most minute of details linking each of the spaces. The eight cabins are themed as follows: Provence, China Seas, Marrakesh, Russian Dacha, Tuscan Olive, Claridges, Deco and Paris.

feminine tribute to this elegant pastime, with traditional tones of pastel greens, pinks and creams. A couple of Louis XVI inspired sofas and armchairs link to the trims on the curtains and tiebacks via scatter cushions, all in the pastel colours traditional of the famous French paTisserie. A skylight allows plenty of light in, while the views across the bow are spectacular.

One exterior highlight is the beach club, which is a transitional space between the exterior and interior, a luxurious and relaxing halfway house. Lime-washed oak panels give the space a bright feel and a huge bar complete with matching bar stools, dining table and sofas make it clear that this is an area to relax in and have fun. Teak flooring helps bridge the inside and outside spaces, but a custom pattern in the teak that bursts towards the exterior like a firecracker removes any hint of the industrial. Through a side door to starboard is a sauna, ice fountain and shower, which leads out onto a foldout swim platform, the perfect place to relax at water level. Throughout, the artwork of Capri and rope patterns and swirls make the spaces a cohesive unit, alongside a sea theme of light blue and warm neutral tones. Two large hinged doors open out onto the aft platform, again with a custom teak pattern to give a touch of flair, amid the elegant sweeping stairs, with unique faux painted mahogany details ensuring Tis stands out stylishly when moored stern-to.

PALATIAL STAIRCASES

The elegant sweeping Calacatta marble staircase with ornate brushed steel and 23.8-carat Gold handrail creates an impressive first sight for guests and sets the tone for the rest of this palatial yacht. Rising through five decks, it gives a view from the guest accommodation on the lower deck all the way to the upper deck's painted ceiling. Suspended above the lobby are the hanging balconies of the upper decks, allowing for the visually stunning impact of a quadruple height ceiling, a very rare feature on a yacht. A lift shell inspired by Le Bristol in Paris with its own ornate sofa inside completes this space. As you ascend the spiralling staircase to each floor you are greeted by a repeated bespoke designed marble marquetry motif on the floor beneath your feet.

POOL

Lemons in a mosaic pattern at the bottom of the pool link the exterior to the interior theme. This space is primarily for lounging and relaxing, with plenty of integrated sunbeds and built-in seating around the bar. Tis features all the toys you'd expect to find on one of the most well-appointed yachts in the world; helicopter operations can take place from two locations, with the bow strengthened for occasional take off and landings, but when not in use, this deck also doubles as both a dance floor and an outdoor cinema, with removable outdoor furniture. TEA-ROOM

The upper deck is home to perhaps the most unexpected room on board: a Parisian LadurĂŠe-inspired tearoom, enjoying prime position forward. This unique space is a

he Earth is so big and our life is so short, so we have to explore as much as we can”. These are the words of Russian entrepreneur and fintech investor Oleg Tinkov, who has done very well for himself and, it seems, enjoyed life to the fullest along the way. The son of a miner in Siberia, he has had a hand in many industries over the decades, branching from cosmetics to frozen foods, restaurants, banking and even long-distance cycling. According to Forbes, Tinkov has a net worth of US$2.2 billion. These days he is also known for his slew of ultra-high-end luxury resorts around the world, which he loves to revisit each according to the seasons, along with his family. One common factor in his resorts is the proximity to some of the most hair-raising, exhilarating sports known to man.

But his recreational project does not end there. Branching out from his collection of resorts, Tinkov is now adding a luxury explorer yacht that will take him directly to the best and remotest surfing, diving and heliskiing spots across the globe. What better way to get the adrenalin pumping while taking in stunning panoramas?

LA DATCHA SEAXPLORER

guests – including two master suites and two VIPs. Each suite comes with a bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe. It comes with a crew of 25. Enhanced fuel tanks allow autonomy at sea for extended periods, up to 40 days at a time between port calls. Top speed will be 14.5 knots, and as an expedition yacht, La Datcha will be capable of breaking through ice up to 40 centimetres thick.

If you had the fortune and resources of a Russian billionaire, what would you do with the weeks and months of your one precious life? Would you go where others can’t? A touch of surfing, diving and heliskiing perhaps, seeing polar wildlife with your own eyes? Well now you can do so even without the mega fortune. It’s what Oleg Tinkov plans to do with expedition superyacht known as La Datcha, a SeaXplorer 77 built by Damen in the Netherlands. With his family, Tinkov will be spending up to 20 weeks per year on board. In a world first, the private icebreaker is also on the market for chartered expeditions. The vessel will be capable of exploring the remotest corners of the world. Launched in June 2019, she is currently in outfitting and is due for delivery in September 2020.

Generous storage spaces on board will house a wide range of equipment and tenders for every occasion. The serious inventory includes two helicopters up to 4,000kg each, a three-person submarine, a VIP tender/rescue boat, a beach lander tender, a dive support tender, four waverunners, two expedition RIBs and two snowscooters.

So fly high, break the ice and dive deep – and add a little Jacuzzi time in between. Get into one of two onboard helicopters, or step into a tender at sea-level from a door in the side of the hull. Take one of the two snowmobiles on shore. Or if you prefer to stay in the comfort of the indoors, try the observation lounge with full-height windows to view the ice floes all around the yacht. Relax in the either the indoor or outdoor hot tub with binoculars, your vista overlooking penguins and polar bears. Yes, that’s right, both penguins and polar bears: this expedition yacht can travel from the north pole to the south and back again. Enjoy the most spectacular Arctic and Antarctic landscapes. After a hard day’s adventuring, the sauna and steam bath and massage room wonderful places to wind down in perfect relaxation.

“The SeaXplorer project is just perfect. I fell in love with the shape, the design”, comments Tinkov. The 77-metre yacht boasts a 14-metre beam, along with a draft of 6.5 metres, adding up to interior volume of 2,560 GT. This is a significant step up in size from Damen’s SeaXplorer 65, which was launched in July 2018. Detailed renderings of the SeaXplorer 77 were first presented at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2018. Exterior lines are penned by Azure Naval Architects, while custom interior design is by Amels and Damen. Damen has described the yacht as “the ultimate crossover of superyacht quality and finish with serious capability”. As Tinkov explains, “this is the one yacht with two helicopters, so you can really go further into the mainland. You can see the bears. You can see the animals. You can heliski. Any kind of activities, fishing and so on. With two helicopters you have absolute freedom to explore any remote territory as deep as you want”. The six-deck, €100 million vessel holds IMO Polar Code standard, and will offer accommodation for up to 12

Tinkov plans to premiere the vessel at Monaco Yacht Show in 2020. The first destinations on the itinerary are the Mediterranean, the Seychelles, Madagascar, South East Asia, Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, Alaska and Central America. January 2022 will see the yacht in Antarctic waters. 61

In the summer, Tinkov and family like to visit one of their favourite places: Cabo San Lucas, located on the Pacific coast at the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula. So much so, in fact, that the businessman is opening a new villa from which to celebrate the area. From November 2019 onwards, La Datcha Cabo San Lucas will be welcoming guests. “It took me several years to bring the project in Cabo San Lucas to life. I was very lucky to buy this piece of coastal land, managing to build a house that embodies my vision of life and design”, Tinkov comments. Now it’s not just Tinkov and co who are lucky: families, honeymooners and groups of friends will have the opportunity to book the villa as a whole and drop into paradise for extended periods. The area is blessed with up to 350 sunny days a year, with an ocean temperature that varies from +22°C in winter up to +29°C in summer. The Mexican-American-style villa has 10 bedrooms (each with ensuite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe) and 12 bathrooms, and a 24-hour concierge. The property consists of three interconnected buildings, each of two or three floors, and it can easily accommodate up to 20 people. The two large bedrooms each have an adjacent private terrace – one with a fireplace and the other with a swimming pool.

Apart from the incredible natural beauty of the setting, a chief drawcard of the villa is the offshore fishing and watersports opportunities. Cabo San Lucas is known as the Marlin capital of the world, and the villa is the perfect base for offshore fishing. It is fully equipped for an array of activities, and the broader area offers many other opportunities for close contact with nature. Some of the facilities include a mariachi band, a cocktail mixologist, a Mexican piñata artisan, golf courses, horseback riding, and personal high-speed fishing boats and experienced crew for tuna, snapper, sailfish and marlin expeditions. For those keen on surfing, the coast offers waves reaching three to four metres in height. For nature lovers, the villa offers diving sessions in the national marine reserve. The list goes on: guests will not want to miss exploring the desert, ocean, mountains and canyons of the region. The Gulf of California is home to grey, blue and humpback whales, being a breeding ground for the latter two species. From November to April, guests can witness the massive mammals’ majestic mating rituals from the comfort of La Datcha’s bedrooms or pool. If you do indeed prefer to stay in, it’s easy to get in shape up with the help of expert trainers and brand new fitness equipment in the villa’s gym. Then gather your friends to wind down in the spa area, which is equipped with a sauna, Turkish bath and massage parlour. The spa also has what may be Mexico’s first ever snow room – a snow-filled retreat kept at a chilly −10°C.

La Datcha Cabo San Lucas is inspired by the traditional Mexican hacienda, following an ornate tradition dating back over three millennia. You can see this heritage in the rich offerings of textiles and brightly coloured mosaics, paintings, sculptures and woven décor. It is apparent too in the terraces, shady patios and fountains, as well as many locally crafted pieces of furniture and decor. The villa features a surprising marriage of Mexican ornaments with Russian patterns, to honour the heritage of the host. From its beachfront location, the villa has a direct panoramic view of the ocean just seconds away. There are two

and batiste for the bedrooms; leather and canvas for the furniture. There is natural upholstery and wooden floors, walls, furniture, and bars for the ceiling.

Each year when winter comes around, Tinkov makes the most of it with a stay at his chalet La Datcha Courchevel, located high in the Alps with stunning views across the ski plains and the mountains beyond. For the location, Tinkov and his team selected the highest village located at 1,850 metres in altitude, where the exclusive Rue des Chenus is just 50 metres away from the slopes.

To give the chalet an authentic feel of Russian luxury, designers invested extra intention in the details: there’s real fur for the drapery, traditional Russian patterns for the chimney, and gold leaf finish for chandeliers and floor lamps. Bang & Olufsen, Klafs, Promemoria, Giorgetti are just a few of the brands represented in the sumptuous interior décor. Every piece has been selected to emphasise the property’s prestige.

Offering a variety of pistes located a stone’s throw away from your accommodation, it is the perfect base for skiing and snowboarding in the ultimate luxury. “I picked Courchevel because sports and service standards here match the superior customer experience that we offer at the chalet”, explains Tinkov.

Guests are met at airports of Geneva, Lyon, Grenoble, Chambéry or Courchevel. The trip to the chalet then takes between 30 minutes and two hours depending on the airport. Throughout the stay, a private chauffeur remains at guests’ disposal 12 hours a day.

There are three valleys (known as Les Trois Vallées) which together make up the world’s largest ski resort, with 600 square kilometres of slopes to explore. 85 percent of the slopes are more than 1,800 metres above the sea level, offering terrific snow cover from early December until late April. In fact coverage is guaranteed, because the resort has an array of 2,100 snow cannons to fill the slopes in case of scarcity.

There is one floor (underground) dedicated entirely to relaxation, with a swimming pool and hot tub, massage room, sauna and steam room, with gym and ice fountain for recovery. The tranquil spa area on its own extends over 134.5 square metres. Why not sit back, treat your muscles to some thalassotherapy and unwind? Or perhaps you’d prefer to gather around the fireplace with a bottle of fine Champagne or scotch. If you fancy a drop of wine, let Tinkov’s sommeliers offer you a list of wines from the best of private cellars.

What’s more, the views are simply so breathtaking, even the interior designer himself confessed to wanting to stay on the top floor. This luxury chalet is spread over 938 square metres and three storeys, each serviced by an elevator. It has five double bedrooms, each with ensuite, accommodating up to 10 guests in full comfort. The largest bedroom, at 50 square metres, boasts two wardrobes and a working space.

A private chef with two Michelin stars is of course on hand to whip up French culinary delights. The ingredients are local and fresh, hand selected by the chef.

Glamour and sport in perfect harmony: it’s no wonder Courchevel is so popular among celebrities and royal families. This is absolutely the place to be, making winter something to look forward to each year.

T

here has been a big shift in recent years towards more ecologically sound, low impact vessels in the superyacht industry. This comes as no surprise, as superyacht owners are understandably passionate about the marine environment they cruise in. This growing trend has prompted yacht builders and designers to invest time and research into alternative technologies, creating vessels that help to preserve delicate ocean ecosystems, minimizing or eliminating fuel consumption, the release of waste water and microplastics. One such eco-conscious owner was an existing Perini Navi client, whose needs had evolved over the years and what he really wanted now, was not a bigger boat, but more flexible cabin space and shore access. Very happy with all the other aspects of the design, rather than trade it in, he started looking at alternative solutions. The result? Perini Navi’s impressive new Eco-Tender.

Although the new Eco-Tender is the first motor yacht that Perini Navi have launched since the company’s rebranding, her stunning design is instantly recognizable as possessing Perini Navi DNA with an aesthetic that matches her mothership right down to the colour scheme. Lamberto Tacoli, Chairman and CEO of Perini Navi describes her as having the same family feeling as the company’s historic sailing fleet, but he says the similarities this vessel has to a classical tender end there. This elegant launch is effectively a mini superyacht, custom made for an experienced owner’s needs. The client in question has a strong, long standing relationship with the shipyard, so the EcoTender project was a natural collaboration between the two. Rather than build a bigger yacht, or switch to a motor yacht, the idea to build a support tender to run alongside the mother ship was born. Key requirements from the project were more flexible cabin space and the ability to venture inshore in a more comfortable and practical vessel than the standard RIB.

The Eco-Tender is the first planing motor yacht that Perini has ever built and the yard more than rose to the challenge. This cutting edge all-aluminium vessel is packed full of new technologies and systems. The most important of these innovations is the self-described ‘beating heart’ of the Ecotender, its 4-mode hybrid propulsion system. Developed by Siemens, this smart hybrid propulsion system has four modes to suit the various needs of the vessel. The first of these is the classic ‘Diesel mode’. With this system in operation, the vessel can reach the high speed of 30knots using the twin MAN diesel engines to power two Hamilton waterjets. The second mode is ‘Hybrid mode’, where one diesel engine drives the adjacent waterjet whilst acting as a generator for the other waterjet’s e-motor.

The third, the ‘Diesel-electric mode, uses a 130kW generator to supply energy to the two e-motors that supply the vessel’s waterjets. With sustainability one of Perini Navi’s key values, the team went one step further by creating the final and most exciting mode on the yacht’s hybrid system: ‘Zero-emission mode’. This incredible system allows for completely silent and emissionfree maneuvering and cruising – creating no pollution and no noise.

The mode is ideal for exploring marine parks and ecologically sensitive areas, and, devoid of engine noise, will likely be of particular use to her nature-photography loving owner when trying to catch the perfect wildlife shot. It works using a battery bank that can power both of the vessels waterjets via e-motors, achieving speeds of eight knots. In fact, low engine noise was one of the owner’s key requirements, so beyond the near silent ‘zero-emissions’ mode, all of the propulsion modes and contractual sound levels are quieter than conversational speech, at less than 55dB. To gain an insight into the development process of this cutting edge Eco-Tender, we put some questions to the Perini Navi shipyard and design team. We discuss their eco credentials, views on sustainability and what steps they think the industry is taking towards greener technologies, as well as favourite features of the Eco-Tender. We also learn what the yard has taken away from this particular build process, and what we can expect to see from them in the future. As a sailing yacht builder, you must already be quite ecoconscious but are you seeing a rising trend in owners interested in eco-friendly yachts with a lower impact. Do you think this is an angle that the sailing yacht sector should be making more of?

PN: "Sustainability has always been a key value at Perini Navi. Our owners love and respect the marine environment and are always asking us to develop ‘greener’ systems. The hybrid propulsion system on the MY 25m Eco-Tender was a request from the owner, who already owns a 50m Perini Navi sailing yacht and who wanted a smaller craft with hybrid propulsion for exploring shallow waters and protected marine areas without producing emissions or making unnecessary noise and vibration. The SY 42m E-volution currently under construction is our first sailing yacht that can mount a hybrid propulsion system. Many of our products - for example the E-volution product range – will be offered with the option for hybrid propulsion because shipyards can’t just talk about sustainability, we have to build environmentally sustainable yachts".

Do you think more owners should/will consider the option of a motor yacht ‘support vessel’ to complement their sailing yacht? It seems to be a good way to get the best of both worlds. PN: "The MY 25m Eco-Tender was conceived and developed to answer the needs of the owner of a 50m Perini Navi sailing yacht, willing to have extra space to host more guests and to explore closer inshore in a more flexible and versatile tender; but in a totally Perini Navi style: same quality, same elegance. If more owners consider the same option, we would be delighted to build it! Would you consider developing a concept around this design to present to market?

PN: "Even though the initial impetus came from the requests of this experienced owners, the know-how we bring away from this project - representing the first ever planing motor yacht of the brand’s fleet - will be certainly carried through into future projects. We would welcome the opportunity to realize further versions, not only as “support vessels” but also as “stand-alone” mini superyachts, for example for those owners who wish to enter Perini Navi with a smaller and more versatile product. What are the main crossovers between a traditional Perini Navi sailing yacht and this Eco-Tender design?

Especially, one of the most fascinating design aspects of the Eco-Tender is the comfy aft cockpit fitted with lounge seating, sunpads and a fixed swim platform – something quite unusual on a 25m. In addition to this, there is spacious dinette sunk into the foredeck that further serves as a viewing area from where the owner can pursue his hobby of nature photography".

In summary, a problem solving approach has created something extraordinary with this stunning new tender. The vessel provides an innovative solution to providing her mother ship with more cabin space. In the same breath, it delivers as an excellent standalone vessel that serves a dual purpose. First, it serves as a quiet, low emission vessel for exploring marine parks and sensitive ocean environments – ideal for her photography loving owner. Second, it problem solves by acting as a traditional tender, ferrying guests to and from the main yacht, as the owners prefer to anchor offshore. It delivers all of the technologically savvy and ecologically aware owner’s specifications, and more. The Eco-Tender is an amazing example of what can happen when asked to think outside the box. raditionally, superyacht builds are a lengthy process, with owners waiting patiently for years for the high finishes of their dream yacht to be completed. The idea of completing an 80m custom build in a little over two years would seem near impossible. However, when it comes to Palumbo’s latest superyacht Dragon, this has been achieved and with no compromise on quality in the end product. A clever combination of high-organisation, shift work, and the simultaneous construction of the hull and superstructure, made this build time easy achievable. The Palumbo team’s vision for a timeless design, combining modern elements alongside more classical proportions allowed them to create a yacht that offers something truly unique without shying away from its heritage. Dragon is 80 metres in length, with a 13 metre beam and 2,300 GT spread over six decks, making her the largest launch to date from Columbus, a Palumbo Superyachts brand. She joins the award-winning 40 metre M/Y Divine and Eleanora, 54 metre M/Y Prima and 57 metre M/Y Taiba that have all come from the Columbus brand. A significant leap in size from her sisters, she is an impressive piece of work in more ways than one. Some of the visionary elements of this impressive new build include an entire deck for the owner’s personal use, worldfirst panoramic windows found in the yacht’s dining area, a sheltered jacuzzi complete with waterfall, and the use of blue agate panels in the beach club as decoration. Here, we explore these unique features in more detail, and get an exclusive insight into this ambitious project.

Dragon boasts a sophisticated and modern atmosphere and an interior that is the work of Francesco Guida, with light wood walls and warm metallic inserts melding with the natural tones of the chosen fabrics and furniture creating what is described as a ‘luxurious but sober’ ambience.

elevate the design of this beach club to new levels. However, the piece de resistance of the deck space is undoubtedly the sun deck. Reached by the lift, the twelve metre elevation of this deck offers unparalleled views of the surrounding waters. Heading sternwards takes you to the seven metre pool, which is divided by a blade waterfall from the jacuzzi, which opens like a cave mouth beyond the cascading water.

The muted yet modern tones extend throughout the cabins. Roman travertine is used extensively, being the main element in all of the cabins ensuite bathrooms, in addition to the dining area’s statement piece: a striking Giorgetti custommade 14 seater dining table, featuring a Roman travertine top, with maple edging and leather legs. Guests sitting at this table can enjoy impressive views from the six large windows that surround it, a unique feature in this vessel. With four of the windows measuring 5-metres by 2-metres, the area is flooded with natural light, bringing a brightness to the whole living and dining area. This area is designed with a contemporary Provencal feel that is brought together with C-shaped seating, a neutral palette and a Chelini table. No detail has been forgotten, with even the lift that serves five of the six decks finished in hand painted cast steel, giving a cast bronze effect.

The exterior design and naval engineering are by Hydro Tec Studio. The exterior lines of Dragon are smooth, with the overall look blending harmoniously with the interior design, and the layout allows for a real indoor-outdoor flow. Thoughtfully designed with few fixed elements, the outside area of this yacht is truly versatile, with huge amounts of deck space, adaptable to every type of entertainment space, from lounge areas to exercise zones and alfresco dining. The fully equipped beach club is a spacious 200 square metres and includes a sauna, Turkish bath, bar, chaise longue and lounge areas. The aforementioned back lit blue agate panels

For Palumbo, designing the layout of the vessel centred around owner enjoyment, with spaces including a private owners deck, giving a sense of privacy and personal space. The 110 square metre master cabin is filled with light thanks to large windows, with the lucky owners of this vessel enjoying 180 degree views of their own private foredeck and helipad. In a clever use of space, three jet skis can be found hidden under this teak finished helipad. The cabin itself has several spacious living areas, which include a bar and full length 14-seater dining table for entertaining. From the sleeping area, find a bathroom with the favoured Roman travertine marble, a sauna, wardrobe and vanity.

Relaxation areas and panoramic views are not limited to the owner suites, with windows from the VIP cabin maximized to offer an impressive vista, and all remaining guest cabins featuring sea views. With the sweeping deck spaces on every level designed to maximise the on board experience, the design was intended to give guests optimum choice when it comes to areas for al fresco dining, sunbathing and relaxing on sofas, sun pads and chaise longues.

Another stand out space is the 50 square metre wellness suite which is found on the bridge deck. This includes all the ingredients for inner and outer health, with a Tecnogym and a dedicated beauty and massage room. 83

For the beach club and other external areas, the design team chose the luxury outdoor furniture of the Belgian, family-run design house Tribù

For yet more relaxation, guests can head to the lower deck lobby by lift for access to the aforementioned beach club. Another guest cabin and the crew quarters are also found on this lower level, with a total of 10 crew cabins, dinette and kitchen, gym and technical rooms including the tender garage. This garage holds two tenders, including a 9.5 metre model built by the yard, and an additional 7 metre vessel. The wheel house and captain’s cabin are found on the bridge deck, and space is cleverly utilized in the under-lower deck, with the laundry, cold stores and storage rooms housed here. Dragon is not just a pretty face and Palumbo Superyachts have engaged the latest technologies for use on board Dragon, including Videoworks for the on board entertainment experience and cutting edge safety software developed by the team in conjunction with the market leader in integrated navigation systems, TEAM Italia. When it comes to muscle, the twin MTU 2,240kW engines allow a range of 6,200 nautical miles when cruising at the eco-speed of 12 knots.

A yacht of this size and finish would normally take over three years to complete and Dragon is a real example of teamwork, of a group of experts working together harmoniously and efficiently towards an end goal, creating a stunning yacht full that really delivers on the guest experience. With her reveal planned for this year’s Monaco Yacht Show her Italian heritage features and exquisite craftsmanship will no doubt turn heads at the show. Q&A Francesco Carbone, Palumbo Superyachts General Manager and Sales Director This is the largest Columbus vessel to date? What were the biggest considerations and challenges when developing and building this new flagship? FC: "A 80 metre new build yacht is always a challenging project especially when a very short build time is crucial to secure the contract. However, the construction was smooth thanks to the huge experience gained by Palumbo in more than 50 years of works carried out on innumerable big ships and the impeccable organization in making so many players involved (engineers, technicians, hundreds of subcontractors) work together with the right schedule". Dragon was built in just 27 months. What processes were implemented to allow this impressively short build time, and can this quick build time be repeated

for future customers looking to build a similar project? FC: "Normally the hull is built first and the superstructure follows. On Dragon, the hull and superstructure were built simultaneously and then assembled to reduce the build time. The engineering process and workmanship onboard were also shortened and organized in two to three shifts to cut time. This build time can definitely be repeated for future builds, which we think will be very appealing for owners looking to take a fast delivery of a custom build". What do you believe makes Dragon such a special yacht?

FC: "Dragon is a timeless modern yacht boasting everything you need on a boat of this size. With a volume of almost 2,300 GT, she can reach a max speed of over 17 knots in maximum comfort. The owner has an entire deck exclusively for them while guests can enjoy extra wide cabins, a 200 square metre beach club, an 8 metre pool, a massage room, hairdressing salon and more ‌ There is simply no time to get bored!"

SC: "I received the design brief directly from the yard as I had never met the owner personally. The specifications were quite basic, length, classic/contemporary design, all white, pool on the sun deck, one deck completely dedicated to the owner, large beach club aft, central garage with a custom designed limo tender. This made things easy, on one hand, but very difficult on the other hand. We had one shot as we were told that the client was in negotiations with other yards. So, we worked following the brief whilst giving the yacht our style, our view and, in the end, it worked well". What do you think are the most stand out design features on board? Are there any that are unique to Dragon?

SC: "The harmonious balance between the inside and the outside of the yacht is, in my opinion, a feature that makes life on board Dragon very pleasant. You never lose eye

contact with the water and the surrounding nature. The connection between inside and outside is smooth, thanks to the big windows (the four big ones in the main saloon are 5 x 1.8 m) and the low bulwarks. Then the beach club: when opening the three platforms you get an unexpected huge terrace over the sea, you want to stay there forever. The pool area, even with its unusual position on the sun deck, is an area where you can find an intimate corner in the forward “cocoon”, closed by the mast structure on three sides and the waterfall creating the fourth". The private owners deck is a particularly appealing feature of this yacht. What was your brief for this space and how did you achieve it?

SC: "We did not receive any specific brief about the Owner Deck. So we arranged the space in a way to have a forward looking cabin which benefits from the unobstructed view over the long open deck forward and of a private external lounge which is enhanced by the fake bridge wings which donate even more space to this area. The owner has a duplication of all the yacht’s amenities in his private area, including a spa and a private office to carry out his business from the yacht".

ith the world debut of the elegant M/Y Suerte at Monaco Yacht Show in 2015, followed by the public unveiling of M/Y Vertige and M/Y Solo at the same show in 2017 and 2018 respectively, it seems fitting that Tankoa Yachts’ latest launch, the S501 Hybrid Bintador will follow suit and be revealed to the eager public at the 2019 edition

of the Monaco Yacht Show. SuperyachtDigest takes a look at exactly what it is that makes this design platform vessel different from her predecessors, including the installation of her innovative hybrid propulsion system, her unique interior complete with high-glamour spots, and how owner involvement makes all the difference in the build process. 95

As Bintador is a design platform yacht, she is recognisably from Tankoa, and has a number of similarities to the boat builder’s previous launch of this size, the 50-metre M/Y Vertige. However, look closer and she reveals herself to be quite unique in a number of ways. The most notable difference is not immediately apparent when looking at her elegant lines, instead it is hidden away in the engine room: Bintador is a hybrid vessel. This important feature is in keeping with general industry trends towards more eco conscious vessels that are designed to minimise their own impact on the ocean environment. This hybrid system was developed by the yard themselves, with the process beginning years before, as Michel Karsenti, Tankoa Sales and Marketing explains: “we started researching and studying the hybrid sector three years ago, then one year after our investigation we had a client who requested the hybrid version of what we already built in conventional propulsion”. The fact that the brand was ready with a solution when clients started looking for a more ecological, low impact yacht design is no surprise as Tankoa prides itself on staying one step ahead of the market trends. Despite the fact that the numbers of hybrid vessels being commissioned is still relatively low, when the opportunity arose, Tankoa were ready to hit the ground running with their new hybrid propulsion technology.

needs. DEM mode leaves the main engine off, using the generator-fed electric motors to achieve speeds of up to 10.5 knots and a range of 4,900nm, at the same time saving fuel and reducing noise levels. Hybrid mode has a higher cruising speed of 12 knots but a lower range of 4,000nm and uses one of the two main engine shafts to generate the electric power for the second electric motor which is used for both propulsion and hotel needs, avoiding the need to use the two diesel generators during navigation. Both main diesel engines and the diesel generator are used in Traditional mode, powering the yacht up to speeds of 16.5 knots and allowing for hotel use, and for even faster speeds, Booster mode uses both main engines and generators to supply power to the electric motors, bringing the yacht up to 18 knots. The rest of Bintador’s differences from her sister Vertige relate to layout and design, and her owner was heavily involved in this process, something that lead designer, Francesco Paszkowski found invaluable when in the planning stages. “We love it when owners are so interested in the design, it helps to create different proposals, getting closer to the final result each time”, he says. “Bintador’s owner loves boats and design and there is no better occasion than working with people like him”. Together they introduced a touch and go helipad, altered the vessels gunwhale windows and adapted the folding balcony in the owner’s suite to suit their personal needs. In addition, the layout was changed to give the owner plenty of personal space, with the owner’s suite the only cabin on the main deck. This cabin includes an office space and impressive lounge with a fold-down terrace on one side, and large windows on the other that can be opened to enjoy a sea breeze and a view.

In Bintador’s case, the hybrid propulsion package powers the yacht through twin MTU 8V4000M54 (895 kW) engines and two 300 kW electric motors fed by two 250 kW variable speed generators. There are four different modes that the system uses, depending on vessel needs: DEM mode (DieselElectric mode), Hybrid mode, Traditional mode and Booster mode with each one employed to reflect speed or efficiency

with Magherita Casprini, and he believes this is where the vessel can really show off her differences. Using the owner’s brief, the team created what Paszkowski calls “‘distinctive elements’ of interior design; fabrics, materials and ‘highglam spots’”, which were used to give the vessel what he describes as a “unique character”. The staircase is one such interior focal point: the dove grey leather steps are paired with handrails and a central column of steel, creating a cohesive but striking visual that extends through the three main decks of the vessel. Different shades of the same colour can be found in the bathrooms and on leather furniture pieces, which is no surprise, as Paszkowski says that continuity of style and harmony of colours were key words for the brief of this yacht’s interior. How every element and colour reacts to the surrounding decor has been carefully considered, with a palate of complementary colours that range from bright to dark hues creating a balanced sequence that flows throughout the vessel, beautifully offset by a range of finishes that include brushed sandblasted oak, marble, glass, hard leather and fabrics.

The saloon, unique dining area, galley, pantry and dayhead can also be found on this deck. The use of lateral fold out balconies in the saloon create a real indoor-outdoor flow, adding square metres to the outside living space, and creating something that Paszkowski describes as “a huge area that looks like a raised beach-club with an opened up view to the water”. The main deck also holds the cockpit which boasts a huge sunbed, U-shaped sofa, bar and fold-down bulwarks which offer a practical solution for increasing floor space and optimising sea views from this deck – a common theme on board Bintador.

The remaining four guest suites were moved to the lower deck. Two of these cabins are VIPs with king-sized beds, with the remaining two featuring twin berths (one with Pullman). On the same deck, guests will be able to enjoy the fully equipped gym and beautifully finished beach club, as well as the crew quarters and service areas. The space on the upper deck has been designed with guests’ needs in mind, with the whole area reserved for a vast relaxation and entertainment space which includes a full length dining table and easy access to the yacht’s sky lounge. In addition, a private solarium and open-air lounge are found on the foredeck. The yacht’s flydeck is another space cleverly designed to maximise guests on board experience, with an endless list of sofas, chaise lounge and sun beds to relax upon, and of course a bar and jacuzzi. On every level you can appreciate subtle but important layout decisions that are unique to the needs of Bintador’s owner, with each element adding to the user experience and enjoyment.

Showcasing the yacht’s Italian heritage, a number of Italian designed furniture pieces, including Minotti and Giorgetti seating, work in harmony with custom made pieces. Paszkowski describes the wall of the dining area as a custom made aspect that he is particularly proud of; sandblasted oak slats have been laid in a vertical grid over a gloss lacquered surface to create this statement piece whose theme is followed through in other areas of the yacht, including the entrance on the main deck. No doubt these stunning interiors, or in fact, the whole boat, will be the talk of the show come September.

Bintador’s finish shows that Tankoa’s bespoke approach to yacht building is working. Despite having the capacity to build far more, Tankoa keeps the number of yachts under construction at any one time limited. This is to ensure that the yacht builder delivers the level of service they have been promising (and delivering) to clients since their launch in 2008. Seen as a boutique shipyard, their focus is on yachts between 50 and 90 metres in length, and the team employ a new philosophy of yacht construction that they describe as “a multicultural approach”, using a number of different criteria including limited production, accuracy and attention to detail, high specifications, ethical principles and an Italian design heritage. This model is something they succinctly describe as having “merged business ethics, high quality precision engineering, and Italian DNA in design and flexibility”. For such a yard, an involved owner such as Bintador’s is the holy grail, with both parties working towards the common goal of a perfect yacht, which in this case is a stylish, user focused vessel with eco credentials to boot.

The owner was strongly involved in this project, what was their main design brief for the yacht? FP: "The owner was very clear about the result he wanted to have but he left the whole design process to us and waited for our proposals. He liked to be involved, seeing his yacht developing step by step. He wished for a cosy and welcoming interior, that was contemporary and understated with a couple of distinguished features". What makes this yacht special? What do you think are her best features?

FP: "I would say the whole exterior design, the large and comfortable outdoor entertaining spaces on every deck, with an interior that preserves its purpose of offering shelter without losing its connection to the sea. One of the high-glam spots that gives the boat unique character is the three–deck staircase, the other being the wall forward of the dining area". When building a yacht that is based on a design platform, what are the main considerations when trying to create a unique vessel that is distinct to its owner?

Q&A

FP: "It is exactly the designer’s task to cope with the platform design, creating something unique which meets what the owner wants and, above all, is different from what was previously designed. For this build the Tankoa team were amazing, especially with their accuracy for every element right down to the finest point".

GM: "At Tankoa we are very happy and satisfied with the yachts already built in the 50 and 70 metre range, but we do not sit and rest. We look forward to the market’s request and keep moving to find something new that may be of interest for our clients. At the Monaco Yacht Show 2019 we will present a new yacht, different from our previous lines. I will not say anything and keep the news for September but we look forward to be ready for the different market requests".

This yacht is your first hybrid-propulsion build. Have you enjoyed working on this type of project and do you think this type of propulsion system is likely to be a growing trend? Would you ever build a hybrid propulsion yacht on spec? GM: "Yes, Bintador is our first built and delivered Hybrid Propulsion Yacht. I must say she is a great success that has made her owner very happy. We developed the hybrid system installed on board and we are very happy to see the application of hybrid in the marine industry. The use of hybrid propulsion is increasing in superyacht fleet, however it is still a low percentage, so it is a difficult decision to decide to invest in a hybrid propulsion system based on speculation alone. Considering that, there are a few months from the beginning of the metal cut until the time the decision has to be taken, so we leave the door open for the customer to decide if he who would prefer a hybrid yacht instead of conventional diesel propulsion engines".

Where do you see Tankoa yard in 10 years?

GM: "2029 seems far away but if 10 years pass as fast as these last ones, I think that with the brand awareness we are creating and the yacht construction qualities we are demonstrating, Tankoa could be a shipyard known worldwide. Our aim is to deliver at least one yacht a year, yes we would be able to build three at the same time, however it is not our objective to increase more than this. We want to build a one to one relationship with our clients, keep proving our quality standards, always being able to be technologically advanced and having design lines that do not age in time. Tankoa’s fleet will certainly make us proud".

Do you have any plans for new design platforms or do your current platforms satisfy market demand?

he new flagship model from Turkish shipyard Sirena Yachts, the Sirena 88, has a lot to offer, with impressive internal volume, unrestricted views and flexible layout choices chief among its drawcards. Featuring sporty naval architecture by Germán Frers and interior design by Cor D. Rover, Hull 1 was launched at a ceremony on 23 July, and made its debut at Cannes Yachting Festival in September.

The Sirena Yachts team recounts that one of the project’s most important challenges was to maximise interior volume while maintaining a high-performance profile. One crucial feature is the all-round insulation, floating floor and box-in-box furniture system to absorb noise and vibration, making for a smooth ride.

At 26.81 metres LOA, and 7.1 metres in beam, this is the largest yacht ever produced by Sirena Yachts – in fact, at the end of 2018 the company expanded into a dedicated new production facility by the sea in order to proceed with its construction. According to the yard, her lines are the evolution of the sleek styling that it has come to be known for (on her smaller sisters the 58 and 64), with a glass-fibre hull and carbon-fibre superstructure for lightweight durability. 105

with the lower forward cabin. This will give a two-floor, loft style cabin, which I think would be a unique feature on this size of boat”, comments Tanil Sürmeli, Product Manager for Sirena Yachts. Another suggested layout option is the choice between an open galley or a smaller closed-off galley which allows for larger dining space.

The owners’ stateroom on the main deck is accessed via a starboard corridor from the lounge area. It offers unimpeded panoramic views out to sea, as well as a view directly on the dipping pool located on the foredeck, flanked by sun lounges on either side. The area is protected by high bulwarks for privacy and shelter from wind. For interior designer Cor D. Rover, this stands out as one of the most innovative features of the model: “For me it is surely the direct access from the forward full beam master stateroom to the private foredeck dipping pool and sunbathing area. Not only the access, but also the visual connection with views from the owners’ bed onto the pool”.

Indeed, at present the model is built on spec, but the yard is quick to point out that every aspect of the interiors can be customised to suit the desires of a potential client. “The layout is something that we can change to meet a client’s needs”, affirms Sürmeli. “We are able to play dramatically with the spaces within the structural confines of this hull. As a semi-custom builder, we are open to their ideas”.

This is what happened with Hull 1. The build began with the yard’s brief, “and then midway through, a buyer came on board. The project was transformed into this specific buyer’s requirements”, Sürmeli explains. And still, launch deadlines were met without a qualm.

On the port side of the master suite there is a sitting area along with a full fold-out balcony. To starboard, a combination desk and dressing table. Forward, along with a walk-in double shower and private toilet compartment, the head boasts a distinctive feature window that gently curves upwards to serve as a skylight, letting in a maximum of natural light.

FROM ON HIGH

CUSTOMISED LAYOUT

The flybridge design makes for sweeping panoramic views from the helm (located forward to starboard), for the captain’s ease of navigation. In fact all of the operating procedures are kept away from the main deck, leaving guests with a dedicated and well-considered layout for enjoyment and relaxation. There is ample space for leisurely social gatherings – including sun pads, lounge areas, sofas, and an alfresco dining area that seats eight. If the sunbathing should prove too much, guests can take a break in the whirlpool spa tub, also located on the flybridge, with fantastic views of the water and also conveniently close to the nearby cocktail bar.

Hull 1 has a total of five staterooms, including the master suite, and below decks, a VIP suite amidships, two double guest staterooms with ensuite, and a forward luxury guest cabin with private head, to accommodate 10 guests in total. Insulating the guests from the engine room is the crew area, consisting of a private sitting room and two cabins with a total of four crew berths.

Another layout option for the model is four staterooms, accommodating eight, plus the standard two crew cabins. “In the four-cabin version, the owners’ cabin is combined

accessories options to our clients”, says Sürmeli. Cor D. Rover elaborates, “we used a selection of European brands but the larger part of the interior was done in-house. Like all global industry players we used the combination of European design with the excellent artisan skills that you find all around western Turkey”.

Down the teak laid GRP and stainless steel stairs leading from the flybridge to the main deck, there is a formal dining area that seats 10, served by the nearby galley. Moving aft through the wide doors, there is another sheltered alfresco dining area with facing U-shaped and straight settees, accessible via port and starboard staircases to the luxurious beach club (seating six) and hydraulic swim platform.

With a workforce of 550, 80 of whom are engineers, the company keeps key manufacturing areas in-house, including stainless steel, much of the furniture, teak and upholstery as well as composite parts.

A SENSE OF HARMONY

According to Cor D. Rover, the grey oak used throughout the design gives the interior a contemporary look without being cold. Combined with the stainless steel touches, reflective surfaces and high quality off-white leather with hand stitched details, create an experience of harmony and elegance. The colour palette of the entire interior is in natural tones with bright colour accents that give a subtle nod to life on board a yacht. Comfort, style and attention to detail are achieved with excellent craftsmanship to carry out these design elements precisely.

THE HULL STORY

A note on construction. In order to ensure that the vessel is as light as can be, Sirena Yachts has opted for modern techniques and materials: both the model’s composite hull and its carbon-fibre-construction deck and superstructure are vacuum-infused, the former using E-glass and vinyl-ester resin. MAKING HISTORY

This looks to be the breakthrough model for the indemand Turkish builder, which is aiming to establish itself in the world of superyachts, having now stepped across the 26-metre line. Not unexperienced by any means, the company has been in business since 2006, and has long produced Azimut’s Magellano range, as well as its own range of Azuree and Euphoria sailing yachts. The company also brings knowledge of the composite and stainless steel techniques from its experience in railroad and automotive production.

One crucial feature is the all-round insulation, floating floor and box-in-box furniture system to absorb noise and vibration, making for a smooth ride. Furthermore, thanks to the clever design solutions on the boat, each area has ample light and the rooms feel open, airy and spacious. Of course, the team dedicated much attention to storage space resulting in some inventive solutions. As for décor and furnishing, the team drew on a mix of luxury brands and in-house artisanal craftmanship. “We provide a selection of Minotti, Tribu, Turnstyle, Hermes, Loro Piano, Dornbracht, and Saken products for décor, furnishing and

Q& Ms Ipek Kiraç, CEO of Sirena Marine, commented during the July launch ceremony: “I would like to express my gratitude to all the members of the Sirena family and designers who have contributed to our achievement. This bigger model means we now play in a new category and I’m sure we are now ready for this. Over 400 boats (to date 410) that we have produced so far are now cruising all over the world keeping receiving huge acclaim”. PERFORMANCE MATTERS

After sea trials, the yard revealed that the model is versatile enough to perform economically and comfortably at both planing and displacement speeds, thanks to – among other features – vertical and longitudinal centres of gravity optimised by Germán Frers. It is perhaps for this reason that Sirena Yachts calls this their “true expedition go-anywhere small yacht”, claiming a range of 2,400 nautical miles at nine knots, and a top speed of 23 knots when powered by the standard twin 1,400hp MAN V12 engines. Cruising speed is 16 knots. There is also the option of giving the boat a bit more wallop with an upgrade to twin 1,550 MAN V12 engines, which bumps the top speed up to 25 knots. Clients can select between a 16,500-litre fuel tank and the standard 11,000-litre depending on operational requirements. It comes after years of success with smaller models, but this may just be the beginning for this growing yacht brand. It is unlikely that we will see a Sirena smaller than the 58 in future, so the 88 heralds a new era of larger luxury models coming from Turkey.

Q&A WITH SIRENA YACHTS – TANIL SÜRMELI, PRODUCT MANAGER

The Sirena 88 is presented as an evolution of your smaller models, the Sirena 58 and Sirena 64. What aspects will be similar and what will be different?

TS: "We wanted to keep our brand promises in all our models; big volumes with high efficiency and speed. We see the 88 as the step to superyacht market. So we increased our methodology accordingly. You will see many solutions that you usually would see on a 30-plus-metre yacht. For example; we provide superior sound insulation that I believe can get easily Comfort Class certification". What are the most innovative features of this model in your view?

TS: "I believe it is the volume we created. It was a very big challenge to create a 30-plusmetre yacht’s volume and still be able to reach 25 knots of speed with a beam of 7.1 metres". How did you select Germán Frers and Cor D. Rover as collaborators?

TS: "We have worked with Germán for a long time. For the interior we needed someone who can be flexible and creative to fulfil clients’ needs, as the 88 is a semi-custom product. I believe Frers and Rover make the perfect combination of tradition and modern design.

What first motivated you to collaborate with Sirena Yachts?

CDR: "Besides the high ambitions and very serious approach of [CEO] Ms. Kirac personally – and the shipyard as a whole – towards becoming a big player in the marine industry, it must have been my passion for Turkey and its people as well. We have only been strengthened in this love affair during this project".

Can you explain the main differences between the cabin layout options for Sirena 88? CDR: "The standard layout has a total of five staterooms. The owners’ full beam stateroom forward on the main deck, a lower deck full beam VIP amidships, and another VIP in the forward section with a very interesting skylight feature on both sides. Two guest staterooms with twin beds and ensuite bathrooms complete the total of 10 guest beds. The yard offers the flexibility to turn any cabin into whatever the client dreams of, from gym to cinema to karaoke room or wellness spa".

COR D. ROVER

Can you point out any interesting features in regard to light, whether natural or artificial?

CDR: "We tried to have as much natural light as possible in the interior with large glass panels and interesting skylight features. Artificial lighting is subtle and warm, the moment the sun has set" What desires, themes or motifs influenced the interior design?

CDR: "The interior of the 88 is based on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel at home, but also gives an exclusive feeling of relaxing enjoyment"

GOLDEN JUBILEE

Azimut Yachts deepened its presence in Dubai by participating in the 27th edition of the Dubai International Boat Show, where representative models were on show, including Azimut Grande 25 Metri and Azimut S7. The former, featuring a stylish interior design by Achille Salvagni and bold exterior lines by long-time Azimut collaborator Stefano Righini, attracted great interest and won several awards, including ‘Best Motor Yacht in Asia’ at the Christofle Yacht Style Awards. THE YEAR 2019 IS A DEEPLY SIGNIFICANT ONE FOR THE ITALIAN YACHTING INDUSTRY, AS GLOBAL LEADER AZIMUT YACHTS COMMEMORATES FIVE DECADES ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE.

t is now precisely 50 years since the founding of Italian yachting powerhouse Azimut Yachts. To celebrate, the company has planned a dazzling array of parties, forums and installations at five locations across the world.

In spring, the action switched over to the United States, where on 11 May there was an exclusive gala dinner at the Rainbow Room on the 65th floor of New York’s Rockefeller Center. The dinner was a grand success thanks to collaboration with One Ocean Foundation and Volvo Penta, and partners Acqua dell’Elba, Alpi, Dedar, Paola Lenti and Seakeeper. Special guests were welcomed from all over the North American continent, Europe and Asia.

At the heart of the success is years of hard work and successful team management by the company’s owner and founder Paolo Vitelli, who established Azimut back in 1969. Initially, the company offered yacht chartering operations, but quickly broadened its offering into brokerage and then yacht building.

Paolo Vitelli shared a poignant memory during his presentation. “My dream started when I was six”, he recalled. “My family had a textile factory started in 1903 and when I was six there was the ceremony of the 50-year anniversary of this factory. I remember my father making a speech, my grandfather making a speech. And I remember when I was six, I said: I want to have this emotion and I want with this company to arrive to my 50-year anniversary. And there started my dream. 50 years, the time of a life. The time of a dream”.

The first of its yachts was built in partnership with Dutch fibreglass yacht-building company Amerglass, and launched in 1975 to immediate acclaim. Other hugely popular models followed, and with this momentum Vitelli saw that building luxury yachts within Italy was the way forward. In 1985 Vitelli took the risk of acquiring Benetti, unlocking strategic pathways both to Viareggio shipyards and to the luxury market. The rest is history: the Italian Group became a market leader in luxury superyachting and now enjoys a significant share of the global market.

Group Vice President Giovanna Vitelli, Paolo’s daughter, paid tribute during her speech at the gala dinner, noting, “actually there’s one person who really deserves this celebration: that’s my father, who made this incredible company”.

Five international events have been planned for the Group’s 50th anniversary, each representing a decade of Azimut Yachts’ activities. Dubai, New York, Cannes, and Hong Kong are the first four locations involved, and the celebrations will be rounded up with a concluding evening event held at the company’s Avigliana headquarters near Turin in December.

A few days later, on 14 May, one highlight was a panel discussion on the role of art and design in contemporary lifestyle, moderated by New York Magazine design editor Wendy Goodman and chaired by Group Vice Chair Giovanna Vitelli. Some of the big names brought in from the luxury residential and artistic sector include Elle Decor US A-List member Achille Salvagni, who took part in the panel discussion; Vincenzo De Cotiis, whose work includes both architectural projects and art installations; the New Yorkbased European duo Enrico Bonetti and Dominic Kozerski, currently in charge of the new Pace Gallery project in New York; Carpenter’s Workshop Gallery Director Ashlee Harrison; and Jennifer Olshin, Partner at the Friedman Benda collectables gallery.

DUBAI – FEBRUARY AND MARCH

The first of the five anniversary events was hosted in Dubai, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. On 22 and 23 February, there was a two-day celebration of Italian taste and style was organised for Azimut Yachts owners in the Gulf region, where Azimut Yachts has been present for more than 20 years. The venue for the first of the events was the Bulgari Yacht Club & Marina, a luxury resort in Dubai designed to be reminiscent of the Mediterranean coastline. The exclusive dinner, served in the sophisticated garden area of the resort, ended with the traditional yacht parade which guests nominated as the highlight of the evening. There were then tours aboard Azimut Yachts, functioning as a preview of the two new premieres for the Middle East,

The international competition for design students is entitled Can You See/Sea The Future. This is the most recent chapter in the long-standing partnership between the Group and various schools of design and universities, including IED, Polimi, Coventry University and Politecnico di Torino, with the aim of identifying the latest trends and themes in yacht design. The winner is to be announced before the end of 2019. Furthering its public engagement activities, Azimut|Benetti Group has also entered into a partnership with One Ocean Foundation, the not-for-profit association committed to protecting the marine environment by promoting a sustainable ‘Blue Economy’, a better understanding of the situation in the oceans, and programs for the next generation. In the days following the gala evening, Azimut|Benetti top management played a leading role at two important initiatives. At the Nasdaq Impact Summit, which provides a forum for sustainability initiatives, an entire session was devoted to the protection of the oceans, featuring some key players including Volvo Penta, Paola Lenti, Seakeeper, One Ocean Foundation and, of course, Azimut|Benetti.

In New York, they say the impossible can be made possible, and this even extends to a yacht navigating down highways to dock in Times Square. This is the rather remarkable initiative that happened for the first time ever in June this year. On 6 June, the 18-metre yacht Azimut S6 arrived in the world-famous square and was on show for all to admire. The unique location hosted the exclusive, head-turning installation featuring one of the finest yachts in the entire Azimut Yachts range. This endeavour been described as the brand’s ultimate birthday gift to itself. In fact, this is the first time in the history of the location that such a large yacht (the biggest that the square was able to host) has been exhibited. It formed part of a creative installation, with organisation and production of the initiative made possible through partnership with Design Pavilion and NYCxDESIGN, the annual event at which New York celebrates design. The Azimut|Benetti Group’s participation in the event emphasises its strong commitment to disruptive design and technological innovation in the yachting industry.

A 60-foot yacht taken out of its natural element of the sea and placed in an iconic city square densely populated with neon lights changes our perception of the usual and the possible. It is intended to represent the drive for innovation in design and technology that distinguishes both the Group’s projects and the city itself; ultimately it was an apt illustration of the cornerstones of the company culture: refined universal design, constant evolution and ongoing technological research. For Azimut, being at the centre of what New Yorkers call “the crossroads of the world” means being at the symbolic centre of the contemporary world; a nerve centre of global influences. The installation was foreshadowed last year by the Azimut S7 initiative outside the Triennale di Milano during Milan Design Week, also produced by FeelRouge Worldwide Show. It is part of a cultural operation designed to shine a light on the unique personality of the Azimut brand.

Ultimately, the suite of events successfully demonstrated the Group’s commitment to supporting the interaction between art, yachting, design and the environment. The next unmissable events in the company’s jubilee year calendar are at Cap d’Antibes, then in Hong Kong in November, and finally in the company’s home base of Avigliana in December.

n the issue of April of last year (entitled Wonderland) we had already dedicated a wide article to this firm of central Italy, where we found the typical values of the Italian craftsmanship, such as passion and commitment, as well as creativity, spirit of innovation and international scope. Our visit was dictated by the wish to know closely all the areas of the company, from the study of projects to the manufacturing process, without omitting the organizational and logistic aspects of the headquarters but above all people and interaction between the various operating areas and management.

Once arrived in Rome, the city of Itri can be easily reached by any means: Model Maker Group is structured on two different facilities, not far from one another. In the new headquarters, Model Maker Group has focused part of the activities related to the processing with milling machine, while in its historical headquarters all the various steps of the manufacturing process until the dispatch to customers are performed. Here there are also the administrative offices.

Model Maker Group is today an internationally renowned business: with an experience gained in 16 years of activity, the company moved its first steps in a small garage to reach nowadays an international consolidated position.

The powder-based 3D printer is one of the tools used by Model Maker Group to make small components. After printing, each part is accurately cleaned of any residual grain using an air jet.

Over these years, the management has been able to develop an excellent organization, with a team of 21 people including partners and specialised model makers, able to ensure the best quality of the product currently on the market.

During our visit we talked to managers and employees to collect the following interview in which they explain what is behind fine scale model yachts and how they are built.

Interview with Elisabetta Fantasia (CEO) We found it pleasant to realise that your headquarters, halfway between Rome and Naples, can be easily reached by any means, an important aspect. Does it often occur that customers come to visit you?

EF: "At the beginning stage, the first contact is managed by Giuseppe Capobianco who, as Sales & Operation Manager, is the reference point for the entire process. Later, the Account takes care of any organizational and bureaucratic aspects, while Mario Moses, our Project Development Specialist, becomes the interlocutor for technical details of the realisation, acting as go-between for customers and coordinators of our production departments".

EF: "Yes, it often occurs that customers come to visit us to follow the implementation of their miniature project. Over the recent years, the number of visits at our company has remarkably increased: this is the perfect occasion for us 119

How are the manufacturing operations split and what are the most delicate aspects of each and every operation?

One of the most operations requiring attention and precision during the Sanding Phase regards stairs and angles: to elevate the look of the prototype and convey the idea of perfection, lines must be perfectly straight to create a 90-degree angle.

EF: "Our manufacturing process is broken down into specific areas, each one with its specialisation. Our model makers are divided according to their tasks: engineering office, milling department, sanding department, painting department, finishing and assembly department, plus the logistic, administration and marketing offices. Each department has its own peculiarities, from perfection of sanding in the tiniest components to the mastery to reproduce, among thousands of shades, the exact colour chosen by the customer. But everyone has a common characteristic: here the model makers’ accuracy and concentration are essential".

Interview with Giuseppe Capobianco (Sales & Operation Manager)

How are your productions differentiated? We have seen creations of mass-produced models but also custom realisations and even as built products?

How could you turn a small handicraft business into a so well-structured company with cutting-edge techniques and above all so well positioned in the market to have a leading role?

GC: "Our yacht models are usually divided into categories: mass-produced products, or rather standard models of projects, marketing models, custom models realised for shipyards for this purpose (thus for exhibitions in trade shows, for events, etc.) or study models, concept models realised to assess mainly shapes, volumes and paintschemes of projects. Besides these categories there are also the so-called as-built realisations: faithful reproductions of megayachts already launched".

GC: "We have never lacked ambition. By joining a quality job with the know-how of a qualified team, plus an entrepreneurial perspective of ongoing growth and improvement, part of the success is already set out. We have always given a lot of importance to customers and our availability for them: we are present at the most important yachting trade shows to ensure an assistance going beyond 121

When you interface with a customer, either a shipyard or an architect, how do you know that you are doing an excellent work, how do you measure their level of satisfaction?

After having been accurately sanded, the model is moved to an high-quality paint booth, a non-contaminated area that protects the painting from dirt and dust and ensures constant temperature.

GC: "As Elisabetta confirmed before, we often host customers for a meeting on work progress. When this does not occur, we keep anyway a direct contact with our customers by keeping them frequently updated about the work we are realising for them. A so developed customer care is essential to meet in the best possible way the customers’ needs and realise exactly the prototype imagined by them. When the model is delivered, we always make sure in person that they are satisfied and often the customers send us their voluntary feedback for our work".

Of course, the future will bring new ones, and we are ready to make the most of them". As regards the materials, we have seen that you use firstquality resins. How can you make research in this area?

GC: "We visit lots of trade shows and we keep ourselves updated about the latest news, because there is no manufacturing standards to be followed. The manufacturing process used by us is defined by us, the outcome of years of experience, experiments and new solutions. The choice of materials is essential for a successful work and it is important also to be able to identify which material is the best for the realisation of each and every part, from the main deck to the sundeck as well as all the furniture and decorations such as miniature plants, paintings and accessories. The materials used today are those with the best performance that we have found over these years, but in the future, we do not exclude that they could be others. The technology is in constant evolution".

How have the manufacturing methods changed from when you started to this day and what innovations will the future bring?

GC: "The manufacturing methods have changed a lot: we started from our hands, without big technologies for the realisation of our prototypes and this allowed us to be able to make the most of the machines. Starting from a handicraft condition in all respects, we have learned to identify problems and use our ingenuity to solve them: from manual dexterity to technology we have developed skills that we would have never had if we had followed the opposite path. This is a luck for us. Over the years, the new technologies have joined the tools that we used at the beginning, sometimes even 123

the minimum seal thickness of each material that we have tested over these years. In addition, the model size and conformation shall be assessed: lights, for instance, need a minimum thickness to be inserted into the model or as spectacular part of the base. But on these aspects, we can always reach a compromise with the customer".

Assembling components, one of the most delicate operations of the construction process

Interview with Mario Moses (Project Development Specialist) As Project Development Specialist, what can you say about the various type of printers, how are the various manufacturing methods chosen?

The day spent by Model Maker Group was useful to see with our own eyes how the company operates with the same dynamics and with the same professionalism of a real shipyard. Research and development are also here important areas: machineries, working spaces, study of materials along with a team facing every project with attention, involvement and passion, are all essential elements turning a working process into a successful outcome.

MM: "The choice is made according to the part to be realised, the complexity of the piece and sizes. When a project can be assimilated to realisations already made, then I decide on the basis of my experience in this role, otherwise for projects with different characteristics we consult with our colleagues and make a common choice: being a team helps us to find different solutions and assess new hypotheses".

Today Model Maker Group is working with the best Italian and foreign boat builders, including lots of the most prestigious names. All the international yacht shows from Cannes, Monaco, Fort Lauderdale to Dusseldorf, Miami, Dubai, Palm Beach and Singapore, are the main appointments where shipyards and architectural firms exhibit the models realised by the company of Itri. A small local reality with an intense activity at global level and a no-stop work cycle, active 12 months a year.

Can you satisfy all your customer’s requests? In which aspects can the customers, so to speak, indulge and in what must they be limited?

MM: "Yes, we have always satisfied our customers so far, even for the most original requests. As regards colour and selection of covering material (teak, glasses, marbles etc.) we have no limits. The main difficulties can be dictated by 125

ast July we visited Frank Neubelt at his studio and the German Yacht Couture Hub in Hamburg, a modernistic and beautiful city enjoyed by its locals as well as visitors from all over the world. The city plays a significant role in Germany’s transportation network, boasting the country’s largest port and crisscrossed by a hundred canals.

during the 18th and 19th centuries, when wealthy merchant classes sought green surroundings outside of the city. Today it is one of the richest and most picturesque districts of Hamburg.

In the late 1930s it was incorporated into the city and since then it has developed into a bustling, affluent spot known for its period mansions with immaculate gardens, and sandy beach. Hamburg’s Blankenese has the feel of a coastal resort town on the Riviera and its standalone villas and mansions have enduring appeal with wealthy buyers.

Frank welcomes us to his yacht and interior design hub in Blankenese, one of Hamburg’s wealthy western suburbs, located right on the bank of the Elbe River. Blankenese was a fishing village for centuries before becoming fashionable 127

This project marked the real beginning of a career spanning 30 years. “Just three years later, I was asked to create a motor yacht, which I did, a 60-footer for Moonen Yachts. They built five of them. This was another fundamental step towards my passion for sailing yachts, to create a few from 24–100 feet”, Frank explains.

The atmosphere of his so called “think-tank” studio, overlooking the sea and surrounded by a lush, inspirational garden with bay view, surely influences his bespoke designs. As for the technical design development, as well as the 3D-engineering processes, these are carried out by a GYC-affiliated company iYacht, in Hamburg downtown and by a Wien-based engineering firm, FIDMAR, highly specialised in hydrodynamics. The GYC team (Frank Neubelt, iYacht, FIDMAR) is further supported by a team of long-year experienced project managers and international representatives based in the US, Italy, Turkey and Hong Kong.

The goal was to set up, step by step, a renowned international German superyacht design house, under Frank’s creative direction on all aspects from design, layout, naval architecture and hydrodynamics to interior and decorative outfitting.

In 1997, three award-winning superyachts brought his work into the spotlight, and garnered him the nickname “the German”. Customers came with requests for larger and larger boats, which encouraged him to move towards more significant projects. He came to develop more than 50 projects, including the award winners 66.7-metre Triple Seven, the 73.5-metre Sapphire. These were based on a special hull platform system Frank developed, and built at Nobiskrug for the same client. Several projects between 70– 150 metres followed, topped by the 115-metre Luna, which remains one of the world’s largest explorer superyachts.

We meet in the Strandhotel's tearoom, an art nouveau hotel built in 1902 directly on the banks of the Elbe, and renovated with modern, classic interiors that exude a sense of luxury and comfort. Frank tells us about his career, guided by destiny but made brilliant thanks to his talent. We take a walk along the banks of the river and reach a truly characteristic food court. We have lunch at Ponton op'n Bulln, where you can eat a tasty fish dish and drink great local beer, admiring the big freighters and cruise liners passing by just some 100 metres away. “This is a place that inspires me every day, when I have a time for a moment of relaxation, every time I return from visiting international clients and yards”, Frank remarks. He shares some short anecdotes from his career.

The economic crisis affected the Newcruise design house, which at the time employed a staff of 30. It brought about a new thought process in regard to teamwork. In 2012, after more than 22 successful years of running the design company, it was time for a strategic change. Frank’s short one-year break, spent simply sailing, made up his mind. This is when he came up with an innovative concept: the very first German international acting yacht design agency.

DO YOU KNOW HOW THE FINAL STYLE AND DESIGN WERE CREATED WHEN HE WON THE DESIGN CHALLENGE FOR ONE OF HIS MOST FAMOUS SUPERYACHTS, THE 115-METRE M/Y LUNA?

The result, German Yacht Couture (GYC), has for two years now been represented by a group of well-established affiliates, promoting and representing Frank’s studio and his superyacht designs. This is in cooperation with main affiliates, Udo Hafner´s iYacht and hydrodynamic luminary Richard Anzböck of FIDMAR. Working alongside the internationally regarded high-class superyacht builders in Germany, GYC manages bespoke designs and engineering processes, as well as representing in house projects and consultancy services of GYC members. “Our aim is to make every owner’s experience the best possible, not only in terms of budget, but also in timing and quality”, explains Frank.

During a client meeting, a piece of paper showing a sketched profile fell from Frank’s notes. By chance it was picked up by the very person who would later become the Luna’s owner. He gave it back to him, first dwelling on the drawing and identifying it as the solution he was seeking for his new yacht. Thus Luna’s design concept turned into a project. For a youngster who spent most of his childhood sailing on board his family’s 43-foot custom Royal Huisman, an IORclass one-off built at the end of the sixties, Frank’s eventual professional involvement in the yachting industry was almost inevitable.

GYC invites potential clients for orientation and professional guidance, sharing his over 30 years of experience. Priding himself on a realistic design consultancy – or what he simply calls “the German way” – Frank outlines his philosophy: ever open-minded creativity, realistic buildable designs, studies and concepts.

After completing his school studies, he decided not to take on the family business, but to undertake a path as boatbuilder before entering the German Navy. But the military career was short-lived. He started naval architectural studies, while racing offshore 1-ton-cuppers in the eighties, which led him into an internship at X-Yachts. When his internship contract ended, he hoped to stay with the company in a permanent position. But designer Niels Jeppesen saw Frank’s potential and encouraged him to step into yacht design himself.

“WE DO NOT LIE TO OURSELVES. WE CREATE EACH OF OUR PROJECTS AS IF IT WERE OUR OWN. FOR ME, THIS IS THE ONLY WAY OF SERIOUS CREATIVITY"

At that time, only two things fascinated Frank: English sports cars and yachting. At first he didn't believe he had the requisite talent and skill to start his own studio. “In Germany there was a tight lobby in yachting at that time and it was not easy to be recognised as designer. If I look back, I was not even dreaming of co-founding an internationally established industry group”, Frank comments. But he made the first step, and in 1990, just one year after founding his studio Newcruise, Frank was commissioned to design a 50foot sailing yacht for his first client.

Currently there are three Frank Neubelt Yacht Designs projects in progress with GYC for potential clients, preparing to commence construction in Europe. These are: Oceanis, a 135-metre world cruiser innovation project in cooperation with Edmiston Yachts; Screen, a 70-metre family world cruiser, (here we shall only show a part for confidentiality); and The Tug, a 46-metre multipurpose Explorer‚ for whose construction GYC chosed Conrad Yachts. 129

t the boat shows of the new 2019/2020 season, the Italian shipyard Rossinavi and Arch. Enrico Gobbi - Team For Design, will present a great novelty: for the first time the Viareggio-based yard and the Architect, united by a historic collaboration that has led many of their projects like Polaris and the more recent Endeavor II and Flying Dagger to success, will introduce a 63-meter project born as an evolution of their recent build named Utopia IV (FR031), whose success convinced the shipyard to transform this custom made design into a new model all to be personalized. We have discussed this project together with Arch. Enrico Gobbi who has explained us how the first version was born and how it evolved into a new project much more influenced and inspired by car design. "Vector 63M New Edition is a model born from the evolution of Utopia IV (built and launched in 2018 under the name of Project Vector), slightly revised in terms of forms and small details specifically designed to make the yacht unique", states Arch. Enrico Gobbi. "The lines, the volumes, the hull and the naval architecture remain unchanged, as does the interior layout, which worked very well on Utopia IV". As to inspirations, if Utopia IV was already inspired by the automotive world, Vector New Edition is even more embraced by the charm and sensuality of car design lines. "Vector was born from the idea of a big marine coupĂŠ, a sports boat with the character of a convertible. The bow shows very pronounced lines, a characteristic that refers to the hood of a car, an element that in luxury sports cars impacts on its recognisability".

The new 63 meter luxury yacht designed by Enrico Gobbi for Rossinavi is a unique, performing yacht with a sporty essence and great attitude. But Utopia IV is not only visually stunning, it is an intriguing cocktail of top performance and stylish luxury with a modern design that makes its exterior and interior ambients leisurely inviting. Reminding sophisticated Italian automotive style and featuring captivating design aesthetics, the 63m yacht is like a large sport coupè: sporty, elegant, and above all, fast.

The design of this large sportsyacht shows a well balanced and pure exterior, with sleek, strong lines and a slender silhouette. The intent was to create a dynamic architecture, that seems constantly in motion. This same philosophy continues with the evolution of the design into Vector New Edition.

The constant research for contact between interior and exterior areas is emphasized by the openings designed on hull and superstructure and the continuous window surfaces, typical of Gobbi’s designs, that characterize the yacht's profile and ensure an enviable view of the panorama from each interior area. The main salon benefits of floor to ceiling windows and the Owner's suite has a special feature that is a starboard balcony of impressive dimensions that folds out into an above-water private terrace.

Despite its sleek volume, this 63m model embodies an impressively spacious interior layout that includes five guest cabins for a maximum of 10 guests.

The master suite on the main deck is incredibly large, it includes a full beam private lounge and a private office, twin bathrooms and a special feature that is actually the protagonist of the suite: a scenic whirlpool enclosed between circular glass partitions, centrally positioned and directly connected to the bathrooms area. As to the interior design of Utopia IV, the yacht is a blend of minimalistic style and sophisticated Italian taste, characterized by prestigious natural materials and sober nuances. The choice of combining walnut wood, mainly used on furniture, with light oak wood and precious leather coatings in grades of ivory and beige conveys to the interior a luxurious yet warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Great care has been given to the lighting design, which has been specifically studied to create settings that can enhance different indoor atmospheres and emphasize the space available, especially using indirect lighting scenes. Some main walls and portions of ceilings have been backlit to create scenic effects in focal points of the interiors.

Fabrics and textiles on the yacht have been carefully chosen to enhance the beauty of the design and are sourced from top brands such as Hermès and Armani Casa. The interiors have been further personalised with exclusive artworks developed in cooperation between Team for Design and a shortlist of important Venetian artists; these art pieces that have been specially designed for Utopia IV and have been placed in important focalareas of the yacht, always emphasized by a dedicated lighting scheme. Moving outside, the yacht's transom completely opens to reveal a scenic waterside beach club area that is one of the yacht's top features being among the largest on the market. The beach club is one of the main entertainment spaces of the yacht featuring a chillout lounge with bar area and a central wall designed to strike the eye. A minimalistic design and a touch of bright colour complete this amazing above-water beach area. The external decks have plenty of space for enjoying the outside thanks to the various configurations of sitting, lounge, dining and sun areas. The main deck cockpit includes a large pool and a sunpad raised on the stern's spoiler, with adjacent stairways that lead directly down to the beach club in the transom connecting efficiently the two exterior areas. It's worth to mention also the 16 meter long fly deck which appears as an exclusive and versatile sun terrace above the water.

Great attention has been placed on the study for the exterior lighting plan of this yacht; it has been developed with the intent to emphasize the majesty of the vessel and to highlight the automotive details of the design throughout the integration of indirect lights trimmed into the superstructure, for example behind the overhangs and beneath the spoiler. 63m M/Y Utopia IV has been very successful at the biggest boat show in the US - the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show - last November, when it was introduced to the public as world premiere. Launched last spring 2018, the build boasts a variety of impressive features, which have guaranteed the boat such a marked appreciation that it pushed the shipyard towards a commercial strategy that until now they had not yet explored (among the major awards, the yacht has won in the category of "Semi-Displacement / Planing Motor Yachts 40m and Above" at the World Superyacht Awards this year). Utopia IV, born as a custom project, is the first Rossinavi boat whose design evolves with the study of a new project called Vector 63m New Edition. Its original DNA does not change: a speedboat also designed for shallow waters, an efficient cruising range, intelligent propulsion and custom-made. To claim that a boat model can be custom-made might seem contradictory, in fact, the shipyard's intention specializing in the construction of custom boats - is to create a new boat based on existing naval architecture (Utopia IV) by acting on the personalization of the interior, both in terms of space, therefore as layout, both as materials and style.

Unlike Utopia IV, which has a dark gray hull and a white superstructure, the new Vector was entirely designed in a single color, like a car, in light metallic grey, with details in metallic anthracite grey. The windows of the superstructure and those in the hull have been designed with more square shapes, so to look more minimal and therefore cleaner. To emphasize the elongated lines of the boat, the windows along the side decks have been extended to the bow, "in this way greater dynamism is created at the level of lines, making the design more pure". Speaking of furnishings and interior design, the new Vector comes with cleaner lines and details, but no less rich in terms of materials. "We have kept exclusive materials such as stainless steel, precious woods and stones. Although it is an externally very masculine boat, since it is a 63-metre boat, it cannot renounce refinement even in the interiors, which, continuing with the same modern language of the exterior, maintain a high tone, rich atmospheres without exceeding in extreme opulence".

"The window of the owner's cabin, located at bow, is a very interesting detail, reminds the headlight of a very famous car, of an Aston Martin; it is from this type of car that I mainly draw inspiration for the development of this concept". The scenic effect also remains an indispensable fil rouge on the new Vector: the beach area, open astern, is characterized by a large transom door and houses a large TV / LED wall positioned behind the bar area, on which images can be projected and chosen according to the different atmospheres which owners or guests desire. The stern view highlights the two side muscles of the transom door, slightly enlarged compared to Utopia IV, to remind again the themes of a sports car, and thus increase a sense of strength and power of the boat. "To accentuate these details, we have colored the back side of the three decks black, so that the stern structures stand out even more and take on greater importance."

The upcoming boat show season is the perfect event to sit down with the design team and the yard's top management to discuss the project much more in depth and consider it as your future dream' yachts! Considered the strong experience of the Rossinavi and the synergies created with Team For Design, 28 months are needed for the construction.

Bernardo continues his story by examining in depth the topic of emotions. “Every project is not a product, but a story made of emotions, interpretation, feeling, poetry. Our word moves in the ether through what we design and build. Our projects talk for us. The act of design shall be pushed by an emotional component that shall be conveyed to the customers to involve them more, in order that they can admire the project in its entirety, not only from the stylistic and technical point of view but also as a story. This is the aspect that fascinates me the most in my job. If we only look at the technical aspects, we end up to tell always the same story, anchored in the same patterns with the risk to standardize everything we do. What changes the project, and makes it unique, is its story”.

A LONG CONVERSATION WITH ARCH. BERNARDO ZUCCON TAKES US TO THE DISCOVERY OF THE CONCEPT OF BOAT, HOW IT CAN EVOLVE WORKING ON THE HOUSING TYPOLOGY. INVESTING ON RESEARCH, THE STUDIO IS DEVELOPING A PROJECT FOR A BOAT THAT DOES NOT YET EXIST.

THE TOPIC OF THE RESEARCH

Our firm is currently developing other new projects, which will be soon presented to the market, outcome of a long research pushed by the desire to create new innovative and functional paths. “Today we are following a path – as seen with the asymmetric boat and the SX, but also with the new 44 Alloy of Sanlorenzo, three of which under construction – that is going towards an unconventional boat, inspired by the environments of the New York lofts. We really believe in research and luckily, we are working with a yard that deems the research an essential investment”. This path brought to the firm a lot of personal (and business) gratifications: the asymmetric boat has sold 12 units since September, the SX 15. This means that the market needs new stories, but they should not turn the idea of boat upside-down. Innovating does not mean design a strange boat. Ours shall not be a forced attempt to create something different, rather than creating something new. Otherwise it‘s abuse, a way far from the meaning of innovation. The research shall not push beyond, it shall be measured, controlled, smart, aware, wise”. This is how Arch. Zuccon defines the asymmetric boat: “rather than revolutionary it’s a wise boat, because it includes an extremely complex system in contrast with the tradition but with logic and control, aspects that keep the balance. It’s not strange, it’s a boat that works and allows to live in a different and contemporary way”.

acht owners and the concept of unique. This is the first aspect we are going to face during the course of our conversation with Arch. Bernardo Zuccon at the firm Zuccon International Project in Rome, that we visited last July. In the September issue of last year, we already told the long history of the firm, its values and how in 40 years it has contributed to the history of the yachting industry, by explaining the concept of asymmetry applied to the Sanlorenzo SL102 Asymmetric. This time we want to investigate on different aspects concerning the approach to the custom project, the importance of research and how to propose new lifestyles on board. THE TOPIC OF CUSTOM

First of all, we are going to talk about the value of custom creations. The firm has recently worked on the refit of a custom tender, a Wally 70, an existing boat of which the design firm has modified the lines and the on-board functionalities. The project was requested by an Italian client who, as explains Arch. Zuccon, "asked for a boat that could satisfy his pure pleasure of playing and showing his friends and the world that the boat was a unique project, made only for him". "From this example", the architect explains, “it can be inferred how to play with a boat project is no longer limited exclusively to the big yacht, but it extends up to the world of toys. There seems to be a growing demand for custom-made products including for small constructions, objects that reveal so much the yacht owner’s and only his own lifestyle to prove that it was specially and exclusively created for him”.

CREATING THE BOAT THAT DOES NOT EXIST

Breaking with tradition is never easy, for both designers, who risk to be misunderstood, and for the customers who see changing their habits. “The market shall be raised on innovation; the design shall evolve but gradually, otherwise the customer will keep preferring traditional boats because will see in the novelty only a range of limits and never solutions. The new proposals shall be wise to ensure that the customer understands them. Let’s think about electric cars, they have difficulty gaining ground because the consumer still sees in them a lot of problems. The boat building industry is a sector even more conservative than automotive, where tradition is an aspect that nobody wants to give up because it is believed to offer more safety. The sea scares. That’s why the customer shall be accompanied step-by-step towards new choices”.

“Understanding the yacht owner’s tastes and his lifestyle, creating something unique meant for him is not so simple for us architects; if we can directly deal with them everything is more natural, but in cases like this, where there was no direct comparison with the customer, our design proposal simply took place because the customer fell in love with the

The concept of asymmetry is the result of a coming together of different minds and types of creativity. From an original idea by Chris Bangle, the ingenious car designer, to the yard's internal technicians and designers, to Bernardo Zuccon, who with Zuccon International Project is signing many projects with Sanlorenzo. “Each project is always brought to life by the sharing of an idea that is a synthesis between the sensitivity of the designer and the wishes of the client. In this case the input was clear, to continue the design process started with the SL102Asymmetric, with the aim being to retain the styles and symbology that characterized the first product, reworking them and shaping them to give this new model its own identity. We have therefore worked on the details, on the identification of a symbol that can induce the eye to seek out and find those significant differences that make the product distinguishable within the range". THE TOPIC OF THE HOUSING TYPOLOGY

reason why it has never been done before. We cannot alter everything. History and experience shall be worth something. The limit shall be that to not alter the functionality of the boat. Going back to the example of the asymmetric boat: affirming that its main advantage is in more square metres obtained, we show a myopic vision of the things. That’s not the essential aspect, even if it is a great benefit. The asymmetry allows living the space in a different and freer way. A practical example: the ship owner is free to go out of his cabin and move towards the prow in total privacy, just by closing a gate he can prevent the passage of other guests or the crew and enjoy relaxing moments alone. This is a housing typology. “Today I’m shaping all my design process around the experience of the asymmetric boat, bringing into question a lot of things, exploring in a wider way. Today the research shall not be a habit, but a need. I’d like to show that on a 50-70-foot boat, or a 50-metre boat, it’s possible to do something that before was not done. Today on board we see tennis courts, paddles, underwater cinemas, even greens to play golf… many functions that before were inconceivable. The customers have become more demanding, we can no longer think to do boats as 30 years ago. Changing materials or style of the interiors is not enough. The customers need functional alternatives, and this shall serve as an engine of reflection, as an incentive to explore and think the boat space in a different way. Optimizing contents and creating new functions on both big and small boats will help to diversify the offer and to grow the market”.

The projects the firm is working on for Sanlorenzo offer the spark to address our conversation towards a very complex and interesting topic: the topic of the housing typology. ”A historical topic. When I was studying at the faculty of architecture, one of the first exams concerned the house project. The houses were defined through a specific typological principle that allows giving to the space different functions and shades in order to be lived in different ways. There is the terraced house, the patio house, the courtyard house, the turreted house, etc. these types are instruments that shall be used to create space on the basis of how I want to live it. The same open-mindedness shall also apply to the design of a boat, trying to overcome those patterns that led to consider a craft just as a floating object that can be differentiated between open boat, classic motor yacht, sailboat, explorer, developed on docks, divided into living and sleeping area and a fly. When my father designed his first boat, a 65-foot boat of Tecnema, it was 1976. Well, today the 65-foot flies are still the same, like forty years ago, in the pursuits of the same lifestyle”. WELL HOW CAN WE CREATE THE NOVELTY?

“The only plausible path to create new ideas is to work on the housing typology to allow living the boat in different ways. There are functions that can be redesigned, as long as the passage is gradual and is the result of reasoning led by the will to turn upside-down and offer something new, possibly better, not just for the sake of making it in a different way. Before shifting the balance, we should think about the 145

DESIGN TO BUILD

SD yacht line, a 28-meter-long model that will replace the SD92, another of the shipyard's success stories. The yachts of the SD fleet, models in composite material from 28 to 38 meters, are inspired by the transatlantic yacht type of the 1930s, bringing back that quintessential concept of elegance and precision. This objective has been pursued without ever losing sight of the space-volume balance of all that contributes to harmonizing the proportions, and at the same time respecting a deeply rooted, essential Sanlorenzo image that adds strength, solidity and continuity to the yard's illustrious history. In continuation and consolidation of last year's concept for the first asymmetric yacht in the world, the SL102 Asymmetric, we can see Sanlorenzo showing its particular skill when it comes to working on the concept of space-manipulating it at will to satisfy every customer's desires. The SL96Asymmetric thus demonstrates the success of the choice of Sanlorenzo, to break the mold by going against the tide, to present a proposal never thought of before. The asymmetry has in fact made it possible to rethink conventional balance on board by offering not only volumes destined up to now for other uses, but above all creating new life scenarios, new points of view designed to intensify and favor that view, a physical and emotional bond that exists between man and sea. With the aim of making more use of the interior spaces and having better communication with the outside world, SL96Asymmetric in fact rethinks the canonical layout of a yacht, retaining only the side decks on the starboard side and eliminating the left one, which is carried on the roof of the superstructure, creating further 10sqm of surface space as well as much light, relaxation and better flexibility of use.

During our visit at the firm Zuccon we tried to discover some secret project in the drawer, but unfortunately our curiosity was not satisfied and Bernardo explains us the reason why. "I don't love to create projects as an act for its own sake, I prefer to design only what I know I can build. Mind you, not for arrogance. I design a lot even when I know I can't build, but as a designer I cannot feel "complete" without the awareness to realize my ideas. There are so many projects we are working on and elaborating that we neither would have the time to design just to give vent to our creativity. I'm very happy for this moment that the firm is living: with what we have in place today I know we'll give our contribution to the history of the yacht design - or at least we hope! This is a stimulating period and I personally feel deeply motivated. We have the lucky to work for a yard led by a daydreamer (ref. Sanlorenzo), by a person with whom I can deal in a constructive way, so I can work out new, different solutions, valid alternatives able to reverse traditional (stereotyped) patterns. At the moment I can just reveal that we are also working on a project to realize a boat that to date does not exist. It will be presented in 2021. We are bringing into question the concept of boat by working on the housing typology". THE COLLABORATION WITH SANLORENZO

Among the recent projects designed for Sanlorenzo, the design firm has introduced to the media two new models: the new SD 96 and SL 96 Asymmetric. SD96 is the entry level model of Sanlorenzo's historic semi-displacement 147

The new projects are each driven by Perini’s experience in the world of sailing yachts. The name of the range, Heritage, clearly signals the desire to draw on the culture of the shipyard, not least through the recovery of various style elements and by respecting a particular concept of life on board. A key feature of how the owner and guests experience their life on board is the emphasis given to outdoor spaces, because Perini owners traditionally spend most of their time on board outside in the open air. "That is why we’ve taken various elements from the world of sailing and transferred them to the motor yachts, not least the distribution of the spaces and their function. The hull’s lines and powerful styling are therefore what define the architectural object, as is the case on a sailing boat, where the hull is the key feature and the superstructures are seen almost on a par with accessory components". THE HERITAGE LINE FOR PERINI NAVI

to the project: the stairways, for example, are no longer simply accessories, but play a strategic role in the design.

The partnership continues between Zuccon International Project and Perini Navi, with the choice of the Romebased studio to design the new Heritage range, consisting for the moment of three 55, 65 and 75-meter models. The collaboration announced in 2017 with the presentation of a first 45m explorer and support vessel, marks the start of a fascinating journey with a shipyard that has designed some undisputedly iconic sailing yachts over the years, as well as a few motor yacht projects, and embodies the finest expression of Italian excellence worldwide.

Along with the theme of interconnected outdoor spaces, the concept of 'Nature' is also fundamental and this too is borrowed from the world of sailing yachts. There will therefore be spaces on board that can be transformed to allow indoor areas to come into contact with natural elements like plants and water. This desire to bond with nature clearly affects the design of the interiors, in which there will be showcases containing bamboo plants, pools and small waterfalls, as well as influencing the choice of materials and their alignment with high sustainability standards.

Sailing history and tradition, in terms of both architectural language and onboard lifestyle, are the main sources of inspiration that have driven the development and definition of this new design experience.

Bernardo and Martina Zuccon have designed the compartmentalisation and exterior styling of the new Heritage range in parallel with the development of guidelines for the interiors. Given the strength of the bond between interiors and exteriors, only one language is need for both, remaining almost unvaried in the transition from exterior to interior during the process of discovering its 'places'.

The three new models in the range, M/Y 55m, M/Y 65m and M/Y 75m Heritage, were presented for the first time at the Monaco Yacht Show last year. Rather than setting off in a completely new direction, the starting point for the design process was the desire to be part of the tradition of a brand with a long and intriguing history.

The Heritage range has a clear family feeling adapted for the three different lengths of the yachts, with volumes that will be the ultimate expression of a life on board where the focus is on the outdoors, in a close relationship with the sea and nature, but without sacrificing the functional tools that make a motor yacht competitive in its market segment.

The layouts of the first three Heritage models feature hulls that all have the same sharp, rigorous and minimal contours, as well as defining the outdoor pathways and seamlessly interconnecting the various decks. As a result, the outdoor areas are not only connected with each other, but the connecting elements themselves become ways to add value 149

f course, you will remember the wonderful Crossbow project, presented last year and described in the September issue. A project that was proposed to us modestly, “if you like it, we would have also this concept that we have developed, a little different from the usual, very sporty”. Today Crossbow is a model present among the concepts of Isa Yachts, a unique 100-metre yacht that is drawing the attention of interesting customers.

By analysing surface areas and types, we can affirm that the firm of Ovada, characteristic town of the Monferrato area, Piedmont, Italy, is able to propose efficient solutions in line with the market either for luxury megayachts in the 80-100 metres segment, as part of the explorers, of which it is among the most expert firms at global level, or in the segment of megayacht in the lower end, 30-50 metres. But not only, because Hydro Tec, also thanks to the fact that having been in the market for 25 years has by now a consolidated knowledge finding their origin also in the past years, when the boat building industry enjoyed more success, is a reference also for entrepreneurs who have the wish to bring back to the today’s market past brands, entrusting to Sergio Cutolo the necessary consultancy for the development of new current models with appeal. Today Hydro Tec is assisting the new owner of the brand Aicon Yachts, for which it is working on interesting solutions that will be soon presented to the market.

The beauty to enter into contact with architectural firms, in this case naval engineering and architecture, is in the possibility to discover with them what they have hidden in their drawers, not only dreams, but also projects. In this issue we wanted to tell the important year of Hydro Tec, about to celebrate its first 25 years in business. If we look at projects put into water and currently being built and we put them close one another, we note how the experience gained over the years has allowed the engineering firm led by Eng. Sergio Cutolo, at the helm of a team of designers of almost 10 people, to offer to the customer an all-round support in every segment.

Another project likewise noteworthy on which the firm is working concerns the construction of a 50-foot yacht, a Toy that Hydro Tec has designed on behalf of a direct customer. The Toy will be delivered next April, “it is a very particular construction”, Sergio Cutolo affirms, “a 50-foot yacht now being built in Savona, which will be presented to the yacht shows of 2020”. The hull is in fiberglass realised in Asti. The exteriors are made by the Milanese Nauta Design.

In March, Columbus Yachts launched its flagship, the 80-metre M/Y Dragon, and today is working on a new 120-metre yacht. In the same month Cantiere delle Marche premiered to the press the construction in progress of their new idea of explorer vessel, Flexplorer. For both constructions, as well as for the very first 38-metre ship being built at Rosetti Superyachts, Hydro Tec has developed

Another significant challenge, as explained by Sergio, concerns the sundeck that houses 200 square metres of beach club and a swimming pool with a relax area: “the yacht owners asked us to have a whirlpool area besides the swimming pool, but unfortunately there was no enough space, at least on this deck, since we did not want to extend the deck in order to not weight down the line of the boat, we solved by creating the whirlpool inside the mast, which thus results closed on three sides. In this way this area results also more intimate, cosier”.

Hydro Tec designed the hull, the structures and the engine room of this project. But it has also involved a company very well-known in the civil field, with experience also in the naval field, as regards the soundproofing, an aspect never treated before for a boat with such a surface area. Waiting for celebrating with Hydro Tec their 25th anniversary, and waiting to know soon all their projects in progress and that now cannot be disclosed, let’s have a closer look at the constructions that made the firm a real protagonist of 2019.

“The waterfall has the double function, both aesthetic and structural – in a manner of speaking – because it separates two areas, whirlpool and swimming pool. If you want to move from one to another you shall pass under the waterfall”. The mosaic-lined swimming pool from the waterfall to the stern is 7 metre large and it is featured with counter current function to provide ocean swimming experience when on-board. On the one side there is the sundeck, on the other one the bar zone. Another important element is the elevator passing through all the six decks in the central area, it starts from the lower deck and reaches the sundeck where there is the swimming pool.

80M M/Y DRAGON

The 80m M/Y Dragon, launched last March, was an important project for Hydro Tec (exteriors and naval architecture), being the first one so big ever built by the shipyard Palumbo under the brand Columbus Yachts, “but also a difficult boat”, Sergio Cutolo underlines, “the salon is 200 square metres wide and is supported just by two frameworks, the rest is suspended, without any supporting beam, and has 15 metres of panoramic windows, from a structural perspective it was a real challenge. The largest of these 40mm-thick panes covers an area of 10 square metres, with its weight of nearly two tonnes. Such windows are yet supported solely by the beams and stiffeners of the superstructure, without extra columns or pillars".

Powered by a pair of MTU engines, Dragon can boast a maximum speed of 16,5 knots, with comfortable cruising speed of 12 knots under the range of over 6,000 nautical miles. 153

Columbus Classic 120m, Columbus Yachts

With Dragon delivered and ready to debut at Monaco Yacht Show later this year, the yard has recently presented a new concept for their new flagship: a 120-metre project developed by Hydro Tec, whose construction is ready to start as soon as a customer occurs.

The tender garage accommodates two custom designed 12m tenders, a service RIB and a list of smaller toys such as Jet skies, seabobs, etc. A diving room, complete with all necessary equipment, is also included in the garage area. The aft main deck is practically doubling the beach club space in a nice “al fresco” location which includes an 11-metre-long pool which overlaps the beach club pool and a bar.

A NEW FLAGSHIP READY TO BE BUILT: THE NEW COLUMBUS CLASSIC 120M

This project represents the largest vessel in the Columbus Classic line and it is designed by Hydro Tec as evolution of the 80m M/Y Dragon. Using the ethos of less is more, the yacht shows clean crisp sweeping lines which blends contemporary elements seamlessly with classic proportions. This creates an elegant and timeless aesthetic, paying tribute to a bygone era of graceful ocean liners.

The main deck beach club lounge is an ample veranda directly connected to the beach club through a comfortable stair and provided with comfortable sitting/relax areas and a proper bar/ kitchen for guest service.

The upper deck aft open deck is a lounging area provided with “al fresco” dining table. The upper deck lounge is a flexible space provided with conversation corners and a TV/Cinema area.

Designed with floor to ceiling windows and frameless glass railings, the 120M can host 22 guests with 10 cabins located forward on the main deck and the owner's suite (260 sqm), located above with a forward facing cabin and equipped with an external lounge and Jacuzzi pool for private use. This layout allows all guests an easy and direct access to the sea through the huge beach club located at aft, which includes a SPA, Gym, bathing platforms on each side and a covered pool located just under the glass bottom of the deck pool, with a nice waterfall drawing water from the pool above.

The top deck aft open area includes the heli-deck and relaxation/sunbathing area as well as a sky lounge and a further forward-looking sunbathing area provided with a jacuzzi tub. “Al fresco” lounge is located above the top deck, with a rounded sitting area and a chimney in the centre, providing ideal space for evening/night guest entertainment.

THE FIRST BORN OF HOUSE ROSETTI SUPERYACHTS The first yacht to be built with Rosetti Superyachts has the exterior design and naval architecture by Hydro Tec. Sold to the client in December last year, the new 38m Explorer is now taking shape at the yard's facility in Ravenna, Italy, where last May the coin and keel laying ceremony took place at the presence of her European owner, marking the official start of the construction. The delivery is scheduled within 24 months. This first construction will remain in the history of the yard as first milestone they have achieved, but it also represents a major contribution by Hydro Tec, which set in motion the construction activities at the yard, thereby helping to give the right impulse for the promotion of the new brand. At 37.83m in length with a maximum beam of 8.85m, the yacht will be rated at 400GT.

This project, whose first rendering has been unveiled, is the one that is coming to life under the brand Rosetti Superyachts. "Each new beginning contains within it great energy and I am very happy to be part of this adventure," states Sergio Cutolo. "This first RSY Explorer was born from a Hydro Tec project and from the wishes of the owners who followed us step by step, creating a graceful boat with a strong personality". Only few details are available at the moment, but as far as we can see form the first rendering, the project reveals a standard tri-deck setup with a full-beam main deck and lower deck guest accommodation arrangement. 157

safety and comfort. Among Flexplorer's genuinely unique aspects it is worth mentioning the folddown bulwarks that enlarge the deck space astern creating a huge terrace and an A-frame crane perfectly encompassed in the deck's flooring.

Last December the Ancona-based shipyard, Cantiere delle Marche, introduced a new line of explorer vessels designed to take centre stage and to set new bench足mark in the segment: Flexplorer.

This feature itself is a remarkable piece of engineering purposely developed to provide the yacht with a powerful crane to launch an 8.5 mt tender without interfering with full use of deck space.

Nowadays expedition vessels rep足re足sent one of the most interesting typology in the yachting market and many shipyards are proposing explorer-like yachts.

The A-frame crane also allows much safer loading and offloading operations as well as it eliminates any inclining issue. The fact that the tender is loaded and offloaded from the protected water at the stern of the vessel is another plus, indeed.

Since its inception, Cantiere delle Marche has been pioneered the explorer vessels' segment to meet the tastes and requests of a grow足ing number of discerning owners.

The Flexplorer line embodies all features of a pure explorer vessel, robustness, seaworthiness and comfort in all sea conditions adding to these qualities an extra dose of flexibility and functionality while encompassing CdM's usual superlative levels in both construction and equipment. Flexplorer is a stunning piece of technology wrapped in an elegant design by Sergio Cutolo/Hydro Tec.

The flexibility of this explorer vessel is clearly visible when, once the tender is into the water and the A-frame crane recessed into the deck, the 115 sqm main deck exterior area becomes an Infinity Deck thanks to the foldable bulwarks. At the moment a 40-metre Flexplorer is under construction due to be delivered to her Owners in 2020.

he 2019 edition of the show, which took place from June 13 to June 16, attracted collectors from over 80 countries, representatives from over 400 museums and institutions and 290 top galleries from all over the world, including Asia, Europe, North and South America, the Middle East and Africa. The show, whose lead partner was UBS, reported “buoyant” sales, with a new sliding scale pricing system providing “additional support for smaller and mid-size galleries”. This year’s edition also saw the second year of Art Basel’s VIP Weekend programme, which was attended by over 120 collectors from over 25 countries.

Often described as the “Olympics of the Art World”, it’s no surprise that during the course of the show, there’s an enormous surge in visitors to the Swiss city. The fair’s most esteemed visitors will pass through Air Service Basel, Basel’s private airport, which welcomes artists, collectors, gallerists, art enthusiasts and dealers every year in total discretion. Claudio Lasagni, CEO of Air Service Basel, confirms that Art Basel is a huge yearly event for the private airport, which is just a 10 minute drive from the exhibition.

“Art Basel is one of biggest events of the year for us. We host people from all over the world and across the week we see a huge increase in traffic,” Lasagni says. 161

the passengers and crew have their baggage unpacked or loaded, customs clearance and security checks complete and they are on their way to their next destination as quick as possible,” adds Lasagni.

“I think the whole city in general understands the importance of the event. This year we saw ten times the average daily aircraft arrival and departures on the first day of the show and we received excellent feedback from our passengers and crew who passed through. It's a credit to our team and service when the week is over.”

“We service the aircraft with cleaning, catering, de-icing and fueling for example. We also offer hangar and apron parking on a short-term and long-term basis.”

Air Service Basel, which is located at the southwest corner of the EuroAirport in Basel, rolls out the red carpet for its guests, with just some of its consumer-facing services including passenger and crew support and VIP handling.

“This is the handling side of the business, then on the maintenance side our certified engineers are on-site to service aircraft for last-minute maintenance and repairs as well as scheduled maintenance and repairs. We also offer an off-site service where our mobile team will come to you.”

This year was no exception when it came to making Art Basel’s guests feel welcome from the moment they touched down in the Swiss city.

The discretion, privacy and exclusivity of the airport are paramount in attracting the most important of visitors to the world-famous art show.

“We are fortunate enough to be in a position to provide our clients with a full-service provider for private aviation. So whether you own, operate or simply fly in private aviation we can provide you with a service,” says Lasagni.

“For Art Basel the main services that are attractive to our clients are the hangar and apron parking - if you book fast enough, as places run out fast,” says Lasagni.

"Our business is built on collaborating with partners to enhance our customers’ experience. During Art Basel we mostly collaborate with hotels and taxi services to ensure our passengers get to their destination without stress and as comfortably as possible.”

“The benefit of parking on site is that it saves the hassle and cost of the aircraft flying back to its home location and returning back again to pick up the passenger later. We have our own private terminal away from the commercial traffic so our location is discreet and secure away.

Every single element of the passenger’s experience is handled expertly by the Air Service Basel team to make sure VIP guests have a seamless and enjoyable trip to Basel. Some of the five-star perks include limousine and taxi services, a snooze room and private car parking.

struggling with her commission to design a new prison”, and ‘Ascent’, described as a “homage to the Japanese Mount Fuji” and made up of “4000 individual photographs taken over 150 years”.

This lounge is the perfect place to build up one’s appetite for the works of art they will see during the show.

This year, during Art Basel, Superyacht Digest exhibited three photographic works by superyacht photographer Tom Van Oossanen in the lounge. Lasagni says the artworks were perceived very well. “We overheard passengers comment on the compositions and state how they are very different to tradition yacht photography,” he says. “We had three photographs on different walls in the lounge which passengers saw directly on entry and departure through our terminal. “We took away our existing art to make the space exclusively for Tom’s pictures. The style of our lounge is to keep passengers comfortable as they wait for their ongoing transfer.”

Another impressive highlight of the show was Unlimited, which presented artworks that, in the words of the fair, “transcend the traditional art fair stand”. In Unlimited, 75 large-scale projects by both renowned and emerging artists were presented. The exhibit gives visitors the chance to feast their eyes upon “towering installations, monumental sculptures, vast wall paintings, extensive photographic series, video projections, and performance art”.

Notable presentations included ’LifeDress’ by Alicia Framis, which consisted of a “clothing line made of airbag materials designed to protect women from harassment”, the installation ‘Open Secret’ by Andrea Bowers, which “documents the development of #MeToo and Time’s Up, international movements against sexual harassment and assault, which spread virally following the sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein in 2017”, and ‘Bataille’ by Rivane Neuenschwande, which explored “the power of words taken from protest banners and placards in France”. The collection was curated by Gianni Jetzer, Curator-atLarge at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., and while many of the presentations from this year focused on current political tensions, there were also creative installations focusing on other topics, from fictional luxury hotels accessible via VR headsets and game controllers by German artist Lawrence Lek to a “filmic meditation on urban dystopia” by Indonesian artist Fiona Tan.

The superyacht photographs in the lounge were just the start of the incredible selection of art visitors to the show were treated to in 2019. One of the fair’s most talked about highlights was named Aggregate, described as “a performative environment by Romanian artist Alexandra Pirici presented on the Messeplatz in a purpose-built pavilion designed by Andrei Dinu”. In this memorable “performative landscape”, over 60 dancers and actors mixed with the audience and enveloped them in “intricate choreographies and rehearsed compositions”. Visitors also enjoyed Art Basel’s week-long programme of nine film and video works by and about artists, curated by Maxa Zoller and Marian Masone. Highlights included 'Prison Architect', a film by Chinese multimedia artist Cao Fei that centred around “a Chinese political prisoner in British colonial-era Hong Kong, and a modern-day architect 165

Visitors lucky enough to be in Basel for the 2019 show would have also been able to enjoy the fair’s renowned Conversations programme. The talks series brings together leading “artists, gallerists, collectors, art historians, curators, museum directors and critics from across the world” to present a series of fascinating discussions on current artistic topics, from collecting and creating to exhibiting art. The programme is free and open to the public, and if you missed it in 2019, you can catch videos of the panels on Art Basel’s website; this year, nearly 3,000 people attended. This year’s edition was programmed by Berlinbased artist Julieta Aranda and featured 15 talks, a sonic lecture and a film screening; highlights included artist William Kentridge in conversation with Josef Helfenstein, Director of Kunstmuseum Basel and artist Akram Zaatari in conversation with Andrée Sfeir-Semler, Founder of SfeirSemler Gallery in Beirut and Hamburg.

Next year’s edition of Art Basel, which will take place between 18 June and 21 June, looks to be just as exciting, informative and creative as this year’s fair. In 2020, Art Basel will celebrate its 50th anniversary, and thus will stage an intercontinental

Press material for the show reveals that the project will be organised by an “intergenerational curatorial team with different cultural backgrounds and perspectives, under the artistic direction of renowned Berlin-based curator Kasper König”. “In the coming months, the curators will commission international and local artists to develop interventions around the topic of the fair as a marketplace and as a historical site for exchange, trade and competition, addressing the production, circulation, mediation, and consumption of contemporary art in a global world,” a press release revealed. “Further details on the project, including the artist list will be announced in the fall of 2019.” There is no doubt that on the very significant 50th anniversary of Art Basel, just as this year, the distinguished guests flooding to be part of the experience will be reserving their spots at Air Service Basel in advance to take advantage of the seamless, luxurious and discreet services of Basel’s private airport. “Passengers arriving and departing at our terminal are usually individuals of status who need a certain level of privacy and can afford to be away from the hustle and bustle of the commercial traffic,” Lasagni concludes. “They obviously have interest in art and culture too.”

Another highlight from 2019 was the tenth edition of Parcours, which features artworks displayed throughout the historic centre of Basel. This year was curated for the fourth consecutive time by Samuel Leuenberger, Director and Curator of SALTS in Birsfelden, Switzerland, and was presented under the title ‘The Impossibility of Being a Sculpture’. Visitors were treated to 20 site-specific artworks by artists including Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Paweł Althamer and Mathis Altmann. Around 11,000 people attended Parcours over the course of the week.
