Tree Spirit-Wisdom

By Jane Offer

Recently I saw this saying,

“My friend told me I live in fantasy land. I was so surprised that I almost fell

off my unicorn!” It made me laugh, as this is the story of my life. I have always believed in elementals despite family derision and my fascination peaked when I read about two young cousins and their photographs of, what became known as, the Cottingley Fairies, named for their home village of Cottingley, near Bradford in the UK.

The first two photographs were published in 1917, when Elsie Wright was 16 years-old and Frances Griffiths was nine. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle saw them and used them to illustrate the article he wrote on fairies for The Strand Magazine’s 1920 Christmas edition. As a noted spiritualist of the time, he interpreted them as the ‘visible evidence of psychic phenomena’. Of course, they were met with a great deal of scepticism but the debate prevailed for many years with neither of the girls, by now married women, either agreeing or denying the authenticity of their photos. In the early1980s however, the girls admitted that the photographs were faked from cardboard cut-outs, but Frances maintained that the fifth and final photograph was genuine. So, the truth remains hidden to this day.

Fairies are the most commonly known Elementals, usually depicted in tiny human form with translucent wings. Their main role is as guardians of plants and flowers and they are also very powerful manifesters, using firm belief and clear visualisation to attract what they want into their lives. Harnessing the natural law through fairy energy and the moon cycles is a useful tool when manifesting for oneself.

Fairies are one of many Elementals that are otherwise known as nature spirits or guardians; Pixies, Water Sprites, Imps, Mermaids and Unicorns are other examples of beings that belong to the natural realm. Just as angels are messengers from a higher source, Elementals are Earth’s natural guardians and messengers, and their role is to safeguard the Earth as

it comes increasingly under threat from pollution and environmental destruction from human disregard. Each Elemental works with a particular Element: Earth, Air, Fire or Water, apart from Dragons, who work with all four. For example, Fairies, along with Pixies, Elves, Gnomes, Crystal and Stone Beings, and Wood Nymphs are associated with the Earth Element. Sprites, Mermaids, Mermen and Undines are associated with the Water Element. Sylphs, Sylphons, Spirulites and Imps are associated with the Air, and Salamanders are associated with Fire. They each work in harmony to keep Mother Earth in balance.

There is the fifth element which is pure Spirit, filling all space between the elements and is the essence of existence. It is this element that allows us to reach beyond and connect to energy much greater than ourselves.

All of creation is made up of these five interacting elements, and so too, is the human body. Therefore, we are bound to the natural order and have a responsibility to work with it. Our five energy bodies relate to one of the elements and the relevant Elementals. The Earth element relates to our solid structures such as bones, flesh, skin, tissue, and hair, and is therefore, our grounding. The Water element relates to our emotional body and contains the memory of all the events of our life. The Fire element is the generator of energy in the body, just as the sun generates energy for the Earth, and the Air element relates to our intuition and the free-flowing movement of our thoughts. The fifth element is our eternal being, our divine energy, transmutation and our alchemical processes that fill ethereal space. We feel these elements working with us and through us via our Chakras, the reason it is so important to keep them in balance.

We can connect our energy with that of the Elementals by engendering a deep caring for our environment and by surrounding ourselves with symbols of nature. We can walk, mindful of our surroundings, breathing in fresh air, noticing the individual trees by their names, rather than by a group title, ‘trees’. We can eat and drink as purely as possible, remembering the source of the gift that is nurturing our body.

“It has been shown in many medical studies that a connection to nature lifts depression, lifts our mood, bringing peace and a sense of belonging.”

There are so many ways to align ourselves with Elementals and all that the connection offers. All we need to do is maintain awareness. It has been shown in many medical studies that a connection to nature lifts depression, lifts our mood, bringing peace and a sense of belonging. We become a part of the magnificent mandala of life, connecting us to all that exists on every level on Earth and beyond.

Who knows, if we practice, eventually we may be lucky enough to glimpse the Elementals themselves, to see them, not just the result of their incredible work in nature.
