Coronavirus Exposed

How SARS-CoV-2 Tampers With Cell’s Hardware To Outsmart The Immune System Severe symptoms of COVID19, leading often to death, are thought to result from the patient’s own acute immune response rather than from damage inflicted directly by the virus. Intensive research efforts are therefore seeking to determine how the SARS-CoV-2 virus manages to mount an effective invasion while throwing the immune system off course. A new study, published in Nature, reveals a multipronged strategy that the virus employs to ensure its quick and efficient replication, while avoiding detection by the immune system. The study, conducted jointly by the research groups of Dr. Noam SternGinossar at the Weizmann Institute of Science and Dr. Nir Paran and Dr. Tomer Israely of the Israel Institute for Biological, Chemical and Environmental Sciences, focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms at work during infection by SARS-CoV-2 at the cellular level. During an infection, our cells are normally able to recognize that they’re being invaded and quickly dispatch signaling molecules, which alert the immune system of the attack. With SARS-CoV-2, it was apparent early on that something was not working quite right – not only is Coronavirus, 6A

New Trial From Page 1A motherapy alone, as mono-modality therapy. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex and advanced cases and during the past decade, remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. International Patients from around the globe have traveled to receive this groundbreaking treatment; which is FDA approved. Dr. Donoway has also treated other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast and sarcomas using Nanoknife surgery. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and has a brief recovery which means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer, which has remained unchanged in essentially over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five year survival barrier. Only through thinking outside the box, will we accomplish the positive. Otherwise, all we’re doing is confirming Einstein’s definition of Insanity.” Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with Nanoknife, Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far, have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. Among his longest survivors, are now patients with over eight years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without Nanoknife, they would have been likely to have only lived a year or so, this technique opens a whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.” Dr. Donoway will be presenting the longterm results of this pancreatic treatment paradigm, later this fall at an international cancer society in Europe. Open Dialogues From Page 1A Executive Director. “This project builds upon the Center’s existing Open Dialogues program model, which was launched in 2019 with a Broward Pride grant from the Foundation and resulted in our award-winning documentary film, Open Dialogues: Stories From the LGBTQ Community.” The first component of this Art of Community grant will greatly expand public outreach for the 20-minute LGBTQ-themed film. Directed by Freddy Rodriguez and produced by the Center, Open Dialogues: Stories From the LGBTQ Community captures in often emotionally revealing ways, the diverse coming-out narratives of seven Broward residents who took part in oncamera interviews. It was presented in 2020 as part of a gallery exhibition in partnership with the Stonewall National Museum and Archives. Through Art of Community, the Center will partner with fellow nonprofits and other organizations to present screenings with moderated panel discussions that engage audiences about the “coming out” journey for LGBTQ individuals in Broward. Open Dialogues was an Official Selection in OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival and 35th Annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, where it was awarded Best Broward Documentary. In 2021, the Center will produce a second Open Dialogues short documentary film that will be based on Black lives in

Broward. This film will follow a similar production model as the first Open Dialogues film with a focus on what social justice looks and feels like for Broward’s Black residents – historically, currently and in the future. The Center will identify up to eight individuals, including artists, who represent a diverse range of generations, nationalities and work/life experiences in Broward’s Black community. This second Open Dialogues film will also be filmed and directed by Rodriguez and will premiere as part of a contemporary gallery exhibition that represents the third component for this project. For this exhibition, the Center’s Curator Meaghan Kent will partner with Guest Curator Marie Vickles, the Curator-in-Residence at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex and Director of Education at the Perez Art Museum Miami. The curators will create a group exhibition of primarily South Florida artists who will also participate in workshops, panel discussions, and family-friendly art-making activities, at the Center’s monthly Free Arts! Family Days. The exhibition dates are October 16th, 2021 to February 27th, 2022. “As one of seven organizations to receive an Art of Community grant, the Center looks forward to working with our program partners to promote informative conversations around

Just this week the City of Hallandale Beach doubled down on climate change and joined the Cities Race to Zero. This new commitment pushes the City’s greenhouse gas emission reduction goals forward 5 years to align with many other Florida, national, and global cities in the fight against climate change. The City didn’t join the Race to Zero on a whim; the City has had

ambitious greenhouse gas emission reduction goals since 2019 and has been in the process of developing their first Climate Action Plan since June of last year. City leadership is asking its residents, business owners, community and faith-based organizations to get involved in the Climate Action Planning process at www.haveyoursay

hallandale.org before the end of May. This website serves as a 24/7, translatable public forum for residents to share their ideas, comment on other’s ideas, and place pins on a map where they would like pro-environment amenities like solar and bikeshares to be placed. The input the City receives at www.have yoursayhallandale.org will be the basis for what our City-wide

strategy will be for reducing our emissions. “Staff could come up with ideal projects for the Plan, but at the end of the day we want a plan that the community feels invested in because becoming net-zero will be something that takes the effort of each and every one of us” said Alyssa Jones Wood the City’s Sustainability & Resiliency Officer.

Coronavirus

sion and protein synthesis.” When cells are infected by viruses, they start expressing a series of specific antiviral genes – some act as first-line defenders and meet the virus head on in the cell itself, while others are secreted to the cell’s environment, alerting neighboring cells and recruiting the immune system to combat the invader. At this point, both the cell and the virus race to the ribosomes, the cell’s protein synthesis factories, which the virus itself lacks. What ensues is a battle between the two over this precious resource. The new study has elucidated how SARS-CoV-2 gains the upper hand in this fight: In a matter of hours, it is able to quickly take over the cell’s proteinmaking machinery and, at the same time, neutralize the cell’s anti-viral signaling, both internal and external, thus delaying and

muddling the immune response. The researchers showed that the virus is able to hack the cell’s hardware, taking over its proteinsynthesis machinery, by relying on three separate, yet complementary, tactics. The first is to reduce the cell’s capacity for translating genes into proteins, meaning that fewer proteins are synthesized overall. The second tactic the virus uses is to actively degrade the cell’s messenger RNAs (mRNAs) – the molecules that carry instructions for making proteins from the DNA to the ribosomes – while its own mRNA transcripts remain protected. Finally, the study revealed, the virus is also able to prevent the export of mRNAs from the cell’s nucleus, where they are synthesized, to the cell’s main chamber, where they normally serve as the template for protein synthesis. “By employing this three-way

strategy, which appears to be unique to SARS-CoV-2, the virus is able to efficiently execute what we call ‘host shutoff’ – where the virus takes over the cell’s protein-synthesis capacity,” Dr. Stern-Ginossar explains. “In this way, messages from important anti-viral genes, which the cell rushes to produce upon infection, do not make it to the factory floor to be translated into active proteins, resulting in the delayed immune response we are seeing in the clinic.” The good news is that the scientists were also successful in identifying the viral proteins involved in the process of host shutoff by SARS-CoV-2, which could spell new opportunities for developing effective COVID-19 treatments. Study authors also included Yaara Finkel, Avi Gluck, Aharon Nachshon, Dr. Roni Winkler, Tal

From Page 1A the immune response delayed, enabling the virus to quickly replicate, unhindered, but once this response does occur it’s often so severe that instead of fighting the virus it causes damage to its human host. “Most of the research that has addressed this issue so far concentrated on specific viral proteins and characterized their functions. Yet not enough is known today about what is actually going on in the infected cells themselves,” says Dr. SternGinossar, who is in Weizmann’s Department of Molecular Genetics. “So we infected cells with the virus and proceeded to assess how infection affects important biochemical processes in the cell, such as gene expres-

So far residents have shared ideas like requiring solar panels on new developments, improving and adding bicycle lanes throughout the City, and creating a Green Business Certification program. Residents are even being consulted on what the title of the Plan should be! www.haveyoursayhallandale.org will be open for any and all ideas until the end of May when it will transition to asking for comments on the draft Climate Action Plan itself. Residents are also encouraged to attend a virtual public meeting on June 21, 2021 to provide more feedback on the draft Climate Action Plan. The goal is to co-create and adopt this Climate Action Plan by the end of September 2021 and get started on implementation immediately. The City of Hallandale Beach is taking the climate crisis seriously and understands that there is no time to waste. The City of Hallandale Beach is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life of the community in a fiscally responsible manner by providing superior services that meet the needs of our community as well as plan for their future needs through continued communication.

Hallandale Beach Union Contract Update By Hallandale Beach Mayor, Joy Cooper

In my last article, I mentioned our Police Contract but wanted to go more into detail and touch on a recent incident that took place at our last election, in my opinion, it was a petty complaint that adversely effected one of our officers. Since 2018, our City has been negotiating with our Police Union, to settle their contract. Obviously, our Police Department has been going through many issues. The number one issue has been under staffing, a reduction in training and the resigning of our SWAT Team. Frankly, the number one job of our commission, in my opinion, is public safety and over the past

some stability to both police operations and to our City budget. The 2018-2020 contract remained as status quo with a focus on changes to the 20202023 contract. As a note, the City by statute, can only approve three years at a time. The highlights of the changes to benefits include: The retro Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) of 2.5%, 3% COLA for 2021 and 3% COLA for 2022. There will also be a $100 shift differential, changes to sick leave payout and sick leave buy back. The City will discontinue contributions to the Retirement Healthcare Savings (RHS) and will now make 1% contributions

only receive the pension gains from 0% to 6%. In the past, the return was guaranteed at 6%, no matter what the ROI was on the pension fund. Members entering the DROP, will be able to elect to receive a cash contribution to a non-pension tax deferred account for unused vacation days with a cap of 336 hours. There is always a give and take in negotiations, so, members will see an increase to their contribution rate from 9.5% to 11.5%, beginning in 2022 and this will reduce City costs. We also have a commitment, that the Pension Board cannot make any changes nor decisions that increase City or member contributions. They did this in the past,

Commissioner Michele Lazarow. Commissioner Lazarow was a vocal supporter of the defunding and transfer of resources out of the department for social services. The commissioner retained her seat in a very heated and often visceral race between herself and 4 other candidates. I am bringing up the past due to a recent issue of the Sun Sentinel. During the race, verbal attacks came out on both sides. As a note, “Since 2018, our City has been negotiating with our Police Union, to settle their campaigning off duty officers, should have the contract. the rise of the “flexcation” - mixing vacation time with virtual work and school. In fact, 1 in 3 families surveyed, said they were able to travel because they were working from home, 52% of those who took a flexcation during the Pandemic, found the experience to be refreshing with 67%, saying, that they would do it again.

1 in 3 families surveyed said they were able to travel because they were working from home.

Another benefit of flexcations is experiencing amenities you may not have access to at home. Consider some of Vrbo’s most sought-after amenities and vacation spots when planning your next getaway: • Splash in the sun in Cape Coral, Florida where 92% of vacation rentals have pools. • Cook over an open fire in Sevierville, Tennessee, where barbecue grills are included at 87% of vacation homes. • Cozy up by the fire with a book and some hot chocolate in Steamboat Springs, Colorado where fireplaces are an amenity offered in 87% of vacation rentals.

Flexcation: Pandemic Travel Trends That May Stick Around (Family Features) COVID-19 has challenged families in different ways, many had to cancel or reschedule trips during the Pandemic due to travel restrictions, which meant missing out on quality time with loved ones, the mental health and self-care benefits of going on vacation. Although 61% of families had a trip canceled due to the Pandemic in 2020, travel is still top of mind as 82% of families already have travel plans in mind for 2021, according to the 2021 Vrbo Trend Report. The report, which includes vacation rental

marketplace data as well as survey data from family travelers, it also revealed some travel habits that arose during the Pandemic, that are likely to remain popular, this year. “Let’s face it, the Pandemic makes it tough to predict what travel will look like in 2021,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo’s travel expert. “That’s why we combined search and demand trends with a first-of-its-kind traveler survey of U.S. families. The combination gives us the most accurate picture possible of the plans that families are making.”

Consider these Pandemic-Era Trends, as you make your vacation plans moving forward: Staying in the Driver’s Seat With travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines in place throughout much of 2020, many families opted to avoid flying and visiting crowded places by instead jumping in the car to hit the open road. This trend is likely to continue in 2021 with 59% of families saying that they are more likely to drive instead of fly on their next trip. A change of scenery can be refreshing and

Water Damage Leak Detection Mold Testing

One tiny water leak can create huge problems in a home or business, it can lead to even more expensive water damage and mold which can affect your health.

1st Priority Restoration - Protecting Your Home & Your Health If your home has been damaged by water from a leaking pipe, intruding water from all the current rains or mold damage from moisture over time. How are you going to address these problems in your home? A Restoration Company such as 1st Priority Restoration is usually the first company to call following significant damage to a home from floods, water damage, sewage backup and other major water events. The job of a restoration company is to clean up the mess and to preserve the home, protect the home and its contents so that further damage will not occur. Flood damage can be found in any geographical area, regardless of elevation. The causes of flooding can range from natural disasters, burst pipes, leaking pipes, rain storms or sewer lines that are backing up. Even in a condo, you could have a water leak in your wall, under a toilet or behind a kitchen cabinet creating mold that can cause damage to your property and your health. 1st Priority Restoration can find the source of the leak, fix it, restore your property and work directly with your insurance. Regardless of the cause, restoration professionals are called upon to repair water damage, mold damage and restore flooded properties. The water damage restoration process is highly regulated in order to ensure that properties damaged by flood or sewer events, can be effectively restored to a safe space for a homeowner to remain safe during the cleanup. You need a company such as 1st Priority Restoration who you can trust to do the job correctly. The process is simple, when 1st Priority Restoration arrives, they will thoroughly walk through your home and discuss the areas that need to be cleaned & restored to there original condition. Your insurance company adjuster or claim representative may recommend what and how your home should be cleaned, but in the end it is your decision to make. In the past year, we have all heard the word “Mitigation” more times than we can count, but with water damage, that is exactly what needs to be done. Water damage restoration does not stop at restoring your real estate back to proper functioning. The professionals at 1st Priority will inspect the underlying causes that have caused the water damage in the first place and make sure there won’t be a reoccurrence. They will repair all of the damaged structures and replace the materials to make your property safe for years to come. If your property has been exposed to water damage, you may have to do water mitigation. Strict actions are required in water mitigation, such as: removal of damaged materials such as drywall and flooring. Molds and mildew that have accumulated in areas in your

property will be disinfected and deodorized to restore a healthy environment. Further cleaning and deodorizing should be done to make sure that your real estate is back in tip-top shape. Water damage mitigation should happen immediately after flooding or water buildup. Take action immediately, because letting your property sit in water can cause further damages and expenses. Materials soaking in water collect microbes and spread water-borne diseases. Furniture, wood flooring and walls will crack, sag and collect fungi after prolonged exposure to moisture. If your property is particularly old, it may be time to replace materials such as pipes to prevent a reoccurrence of water damage. If pipes are behind walls it may require more extensive repairs. The water mitigation process will depend on how long your property has been exposed to water. Air humidifiers and drying equipment must be turned on around the clock in areas with severe water damage. Mold spores are especially dangerous to health and thorough cleaning and disinfecting should be done as part of the water damage mitigation. It is advisable to get the temperature, humidity and moisture of your property tested to see if it has been restored to normal standards, 1st Priority professionals can handle the entire process. After 1st Priority Restoration evaluates the work and equipment needed to clean your home, they will provide you with an estimate or contract for their services. Leak Detection: One tiny water leak can create huge problems in a home or business. An undetected water pipe leak will not only dramatically increase your utility bills, but it can also lead to even more expensive water damage and mold. If you’ve had higher than average water bills, constantly have to refill your pool or hear running water, it’s time to call the leak detection specialists at 1st Priority Restoration! Is water pipe leak detection possible if the pipes are behind a wall? Yes, using the newest state-of-the-art detection tools, highly trained technicians are able to locate water pipe leaks that are hidden behind walls. They can even provide water plumbing leak detection within concrete slab foundations. Will insurance cover the cost of plumbing leak detection services? That all depends on your home’s insurance plan. In many situations, when there is a need for water damage restoration, many insurance companies will cover the related costs. 1st Priority Restoration representatives can work directly with your home insurance company to verify the need for the plumbing leak detection service, cause of the problem and the repairs that will be required to remedy the situation.

Mold And Your Home: Mold is found both indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, heating and air conditioning systems. Mold in the outside air can also attach itself to clothing, shoes, bags and pets, which can be carried indoors. Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, pipes or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard, ceiling tiles and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric and upholstery. With all of the rain and storms we have been having these past months, you can see a pattern of mold growth that will last. From leaks, flooding and driving rain, mold growth is a certainty in South Florida. If you are concerned that you might have a mold or mildew problem, it is best to call the professionals for a complete evaluation of your home. Your health is your most important asset, so just like you go see a doctor for a test, your home needs testing as well. Never Fool Around With Mold & Mildew: When it comes to mold and mildew, we cannot take those potential hazards lightly. A mold problem can cause you to experience dizziness, anxiety, depression and even hallucinations. If you have been experiencing a diminished attention span or problems with your memory, it might be a good idea to have your home inspected for black mold by a mold remediation crew. For people sensitive to mold, inhaling or touching mold spores can cause allergic reactions, including sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rashes. People with serious mold allergies may have more severe reactions, including shortness of breath. At 1st Priority Restoration, this is what they do 365 days a year, nobody knows how to prevent potential dangers like they do. By dialing: 1 (800) 6171112 – you can save financially and your health as well!

leak unnoticed. Mold can grow behind those walls and filter into the air through ducts or pipes. At 1st Priority, they can come in and assess the situation before it gets worse. Did you know that many air conditioner systems/ ducts are susceptible to mold growth? They often trap moisture, creating a breeding ground for spores. Bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms create a lot of excess heat and humidity, especially here in south Florida – whether it is from a shower, stove or even a dryer, all of these areas should be well ventilated. Education is key to anything – when our health is at stake – knowing that mold spores can lay dormant for years after they are produced and could begin growing again at any time, it is extremely important to know. Because of this, regular cleanings and having 1st Priority Restoration to depend on, will certainly make our lives much easier. Ever wonder why you or your children wake up coughing and sneezing on a regular basis? The CDC may have the answer. According to the CDC, in 2004 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found that there was sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing, sneezing and wheezing in otherwise healthy people and in individuals susceptible with compromised immune conditions. Mold or mold spores may cause asthma attacks in people who have asthma and are allergic to mold. Even in some nonallergic individuals, mold can cause symptoms of irritation in the eyes, skin and airways. For example, the “black mold” Stachybotrys, along with some other types of mold, produce toxins known as mycotoxins that can cause irritation of the skin and airways in susceptible individuals. Sometimes, people may develop severe reactions to mold exposure, but cleaning and sanitizing by professionals can help mitigate the health issues. Broward County Transit Resumes Collecting Bus Fares June 1 Broward County Transit (BCT) will resume collecting bus fares on Tuesday, June 1, 2021. At that time, passengers will be asked to board through the front door to pay their fares and exit through the rear doors. BCT suspended fares on March 24, 2020, as one of many safety measures put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BCT will continue its policy to maintain social distancing and increase frequency on bus routes when needed. Additional enhanced safety measures include disinfecting buses nightly with extra cleaning during the day, equipping buses with ionizing air purifiers that clean the air, and installing bus operator cabin partitions throughout the entire fleet. “Safety is our top priority, and we continue to work tirelessly to protect or customers and bus

operators. We thank passengers for their patience and for doing their part to keep everyone safe,” said Transportation Director Chris Walton. BCT urges customers to take advantage of the contactless mobile ticketing app, which will be available on May 24, 2021. Mobile tickets are a safe, easy and convenient way to purchase bus fare.
