CLEANUP CONTINUES
Another military plane crashed into the sea off the coast of San Javier this week, the second such incident in a month.

The fatalities are confirmed by the Ministry of Defence as instructor Daniel Melero, aged 50, from Cádiz, and student in the air academy, Rosa Almirón, aged 20 from Lucena in Córdoba.

The cleanup operation around the area continues, following last week´s flooding as a result of the DANA weather phenomenon. Local charitable groups called for the donation of clothes, food, cleaning and school supplies and their requests were met with a barrage of items donated by well-wishers who wanted to do whatever they could to help. as was seen in at least one video posted on social media of Guardia Civil officers trying to rescue a somewhat stubborn donkey. Their insistence paid off and the animal was saved. Sadly, this was not the case for others with Orihuela town hall having to issue instructions on how to have animals, both pets and larger beasts, collected by the relevant departments.

Apparently not a publicity photocall as he wasn´t even aware the picture had been taken, just another attempt to fulfil the “all hands on deck” commitment that all most locals exhibited.

The pilots were flying in a propeller-driven aircraft, namely the Chilean Enaer T-35C Pillán, which has been used by the air academy since 1987. Although it has been a largely
successful aircraft of the Spanish air force, the prototype, which first flew in 1981, was destroyed in a crash during a flight the following year. The 112 emergency coordination centre was inundated with calls reporting the crash and immediately despatched assistance to the scene which is already awash with emergency workers dealing with the aftermath of the recent floods. This is the second incident after Francisco Marin Nuñoz lost his life when his aircraft crashed.
