If you have suffered damage you must notify your insurance company, even if you believe that your policy doesn´t cover the damage.

It is possible that any damage sustained will still be covered but by a concept known as the Consorcio de Compensación de Seguros (CCS), or Consorcio for short.

The Consorcio was set up by the Spanish Government around 80 years ago and was designed to help victims

who have suffered in the event of extraordinary circumstances. The Consorcio is an additional cover to that of your own policy and extends the same coverage that your policy would, but specifically designed for situations like this, typically being activated to cover damage caused by earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, wind, and flooding, amongst others. You have already paid into the scheme, perhaps without being aware, as it is compulsory on all policies.

The assessors from the CCS have already estimated that 30,000 properties will be covered by the policy, to the tune of approximately 203 million euro. In the provinces of Alicante and Valencia, the CCS estimates a total of 12,000 claims; of which 9,300 correspond to homes, businesses, industries and civil works, and 2,700 to automobiles. The total estimated cost amounts to 103 million euro. The most damaged areas are Orihuela and the rest of the Vega Baja region, in Alicante, and Ontinyent and rest of the Vall de Albaida region, in Valencia.

As with any insurance, there are terms and conditions which must be met in order to qualify, but CCS assessors will be tasked with examining the damage and deciding what is covered, and so you have nothing to lose by the process.

So far the CCS has received 6,258 claims for compensation, which correspond to 3,896 homes, 1,548 cars, 667 businesses, offices and nonindustrial establishments, and 147 industries. Of the 6,258 applications, 3,147 come from Murcia (724 of

compensation from the CCS. You can register a claim yourself or, as many people live in their native lands, the request can be made by your representative. Contacting your insurance company is the best option, as they should handle everything for you, but you can call the CCS direct on 900 222 665, or register through the internet at www.consorseguros.es (with electronic ID or certificate).

The union has pointed out that with their intervention in floods becoming more frequent, they need appropriate footwear, as “it is not comfortable to be 8 hours in wet shoes”.

DEAD TUNA POSE HEALTH THREAT More than 100 dead red tuna fish in various states of decomposition have been sighted along the coast between Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa and Pilar de la Horadada, just a few metres from the local beaches located in these municipalities.

Further down the coast, in the Region of Murcia, the town hall has been forced to close various local beaches, particularly in the La Manga area, due to the health risks posed by the apparition of these dead specimens.

A number of the dead tuna have been carried by the current and currently lie washed up on the shores of Mil Palmeras beach, amongst others.

The specimens originally came from a fattening farm in San Pedro del Pinatar and are thought to have perished in last week’s

storms, although this hasn’t officially been confirmed by the company.

In Murcia, the dead fish are being removed and taken away by collection vehicles. However, in the Alicante Province, the tuna is yet to be disposed of and is potentially causing a hazardous health risk.

When the fish, which were originally destined to be exported to Asian markets, first appeared, almost a week ago, many people took advantage of the fresh seafood and took them home to filet and cook. However, the large specimens, weighing around 150 – 200kg, are now rotting and need to be disposed of correctly.

FRUIT FLY RISK INCREASE As the weather has taken priority for many farmers set to lose their entire crops and livelihoods due to the floods, the provincial environmental department has reminded them of another possible risk, that of Ceratitis.

Ceratitis is a genus of tephritid fruit flies with about 80

species. One of the best-known species is Ceratitis capitata, the Mediterranean fruit fly.

Adults lay their eggs under the skins of fruit, particularly where the skin is already broken. The eggs hatch within 3 days and the larvae develop inside the fruit.

A distressed loggerhead sea turtle was found on La Mata beach earlier this week by a beach-cleaning employee, who immediately called the Local Police to help.

The 30-centimetrelong turtle was trapped in a net and showed signs of strangulation after trying to free itself to no avail.

Its right wing was also infected, according to the municipal biologist that treated him.

The turtle is now recuperating in Valencia at the Oceanogràfic’s ARCA

(Sea Animals Recovery and Conservation Area.

The loggerhead sea turtle is an endangered species, categorised as vulnerable at a global level by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

If you happen to come across a loggerhead turtle on one of our local beaches, you should immediately call 112. It is imperative that the turtle is not disturbed and is kept away from bright lights and the sun.

Torrevieja invests in scheme to help elderly residents living on their own The Town Hall of Torrevieja has announced that over the next four years it will invest more than 3.3 million euro in a new initiative that aims to offer home assistance to elderly people living on their own or to couples unable to carry out basic daily tasks by themselves like going shopping, cleaning, cooking or other basic essentials.

The contract for this new home-help service has been awarded to Protección Geriátrica, who employs approximately 30 staff, for the sum of 579,000 euro per annum.

The final details are

being determined before the contract can be signed and the initiative can begin to operate, despite the fact that the contract was awarded five months ago.

Along with Benidorm, the municipality of Torrevieja is at the top of the ranking for the number of people living on their own in relation to the population.

In Torrevieja, a third of people are registered as living on their own – approximately 14,468 residents – while 28 per cent of them are over the age of 60.

Torrevieja’s Social Services Department is finding it increasingly difficult to cope with the growing number of petitions for home help by elderly residents who have been discharged from hospital after an illness or operation and still require assistance while they recover but who live on their own and lack the help of family members.

Torrevieja fugitive arrest The National Police have arrested a Gabonese fugitive in Torrevieja who had escaped from police headquarters in Turin, Italy.

The 35-year-old man, who had been arrested for rape, was wanted by the Italian authorities after he managed to escape his detention by jumping

TURNING BACK EXTINCTION THREAT The Valencia region has welcomed 4 new residents this week, although they didn´t have to go through any of the paper loopholes in order to reside in the area, they were brought in and welcomed especially to try to turn back the clock on extinction.

The little residents are birds, however, Osprey to be precise, who were reintroduced into the wild by the regional environmental department after they have been classed as extinct as a nesting bird for the last 50 years.

Two of the chicks were brought in from the Balearic Islands, the others from Cadíz, in the hope that they might once again find the Valencia region appealing.

The department is trying to reverse trends of birds and other wildlife leaving the area, some of which are as a result of building, others through environmental abuse, and are asking all municipalities, businesses and residents to do whatever they can to promote the protection of the delicate environment.

Suma Bill Due Date Extended The voluntary period for payment of municipal taxes, which are collected by the SUMA agency, is about to come to an end.

Normally, homeowners have until 4 October to pay the bill at a reduced rate, or a surcharge is added if payment is delayed to beyond the assigned date.

However, there´s good news for the

residents of some of the locations affected by flooding, in that the Alicante provincial government has given an extra month grace period for certain areas, extending the payment period until 5 November.

Not all areas will benefit from the extension, so it is worth checking with your local SUMA office or town hall.

Big Reds Needs Help Big Reds Animal retreat was badly affected by the devastating storms last week. John who looks after the animals at the sanctuary house woke to find water rising rapidly into the house.

Acting quickly he released all the animals and carried them to the second floor of the house. The situation became much worse very quickly as the house then started to subside with everyone inside!

The local community rescued all the animals with blow-up dingy’s by wading neck-deep in the water. John then had to be airlifted to safety by local services as no one could reach him at this point.

12 dogs, 3 cats and a few pigs are very grateful to have such a dedicated hero to help them. In the mad panic John never took thought to his own well being and is now stood in the clothes he was wearing without shoes! And now homeless!

Finca La Castilla Big Reds are currently raising funds in various ways to support the animals and get John into some dry clothes and footwear.

During the storm they lost their washing machine, dryer and some of their kenneling.

A RESCUE AFTER THE STORM into the long grass, out of sight.

I drove around searching for the best place to access the land she had run onto.

I quickly parked my car, got a pet carrier out of the car, and ran through the high grass in search of her. After just 5 minutes I spotted her, and of course, she spotted me.

The race against time was on, as it was crucial to keep her off the busy motorway and out of danger.

Meet Esperanza, a little kitten that survived the storm and crossed my path at the exact right moment, and was brought to safety.

On Saturday evening I was driving on the N-332 in Pilar de la Horadada when I spotted a tiny kitten sitting on the side of the road ready to cross in front of the traffic.

I quickly pulled over and went after her, but she ran under the barrier and

Running after her wasn't the safest option, but leaving her life in danger wasn't an option either. I followed her quickly, and soon she stopped and lay on the ground, where I managed to grab her, but she slipped through my hands.

I followed her again and she froze in fear. This time I managed to get her in my hands, but not without a fight.

She bit my hand out of fear, but I knew fear had taken over and she needed to be rescued as soon as possible.

I placed her inside the carrier and we headed back to the car where I could properly examine her and check her condition. Her long silky hair was grey

from being outside in the dirt, and she was soaked to the skin. You could feel her tiny bones when you run your hands down her spine, she was emaciated.

I have no idea when she had last eaten, so when I took her home and wrapped her up in a blanket she had her first meal of tuna and held onto that dish with both paws.

After updating my social media on the rescue, one of my supporters asked to name this lucky kitten Esperanza, which is Spanish for hope.

Esperanza must have had a scary few days out in that terrible weather, but she is one of the luckier ones to be alive, rescued and safe.

My heart breaks for all of the animals who lost their lives. I am happy little Esperanza was rescued, and I can't wait to watch her flourish and find a forever home.

Esperanza visited the vets for a check-up, she had very watery eyes and a cold. She was given an antibiotic injection and some medicine, but overall she's in good health. She needs to gain weight, but she will be back to perfect health in no time.

During the gota frĂ­a storm, hundreds of animals lost their lives. Many of those were street cats and kittens.

When people and animals are hurt then most of us realign with our humanity. We forget about buying a new car, or shopping for clothes, or booking a holiday. And we dive into our empathy.

In history, we have some incredibly inspiring people who lived their whole lives in the service of others. Mother Teresa and Gandhi had their chosen religion's but their purpose was always to serve others.

Because of this they became the most loved and cherished people to exist, and the most influential. When we observed

them in action we felt the love in their hearts and pure intention. Actions that cannot be faked or falsified. Their hearts and minds were open to everyone and everything.

Through materialism, we have become segregated, some would say a clever tactic by the leaders of this world to line their pockets and weaken us. Because in numbers we are powerful, we can change lives, laws and possibly the world.

As we learn to let go of our fears, to realise we are one, we can contribute to creating change for all.

Our hearts break as we witness the destruction of lives,homes and livelihoods.

Why not try to reflect on how it feels to do for others without expectation and how you can maybe incorporate that feeling into your everyday life.

Maybe you have been thinking about volunteering or offering to help an elderly neighbour.

Or maybe spending some time with someone in hospital who has no-one to visit them.

DIAGNOSE EARLY SIGNS OF SKIN CANCER WITH YOUR SMARTPHONE As we get older, our bodies change. Not only do they change in size, but lumps, bumps, moles, spots and blemishes that weren’t there before begin to appear.

In most cases, this is nothing to worry about and just a sign that you are getting older, but if you are worried, it’s always best to check just to be sure – especially for everyone living here in Spain, where our exposure to the sun is much greater than when we lived in the UK. And, yes, for many, a trip to the medical centre or hospital might seem like a load of hassle – it’s not really when your health is concerned, but for all those with that mindset, why not start off by using one of the skin cancer-detecting apps featured below?

When it comes to an early cancer diagnosis via your smartphone, the focus currently is on signs of skin cancer. Due to the easy integration in which smartphone cameras can capture, record, and interpret potential skin abnormalities, an entire market has emerged.

Leading the charge are popular apps such as SkinVision, Doctor Mole, and MoleScope, which all have similar protocols and features.

First, the user captures an image of their mole with the smartphone’s camera or enhanced lens attachment.

Next, each program uses advanced technology to perform tasks that analyse things such as the Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, and Evolution (ABCDE) of the mole.

From there, the image and analysis are saved so the user can track and record each potential skin abnormality.

What should be made clear is that, at this stage in app development, a twodimensional smartphone photograph interpreted by a computer algorithm cannot replace a full skin examination by a knowledgeable and expert doctor.

leading to a lack or delay of treatment. Given the fact that the current accuracy is still not even close to 100 per cent, putting your health solely in the hands of these new apps could potentially prove to be fatal.

The current consensus is that this technology, as it functions at the present time, can increase the awareness and body consciousness of the user. Working along with your doctor, increased awareness and the ability to track and report most certainly holds promise. Yet a stand-alone system to replace a qualified healthcare practitioner still appears far from reality.

There simply is no shortcut when it comes to leading a cancer-free lifestyle. If you prefer the old-fashioned way, the ABCDE method of skin self-checks remains a timetested technique for spotting early signs of skin cancer. See the panel on this page for an explanation of the ABCDE method.

TIME TO GO TOPLESS This week marks a momentous anniversary for topless fans, as one of the most popular little sports cars with a cabriolet roof was launched on 20 February 1962.

The MGB, incidentally, was used by some police forces in its prime, offering a quick response to any incident, but it wasn´t the obvious choice for one group of law enforcers, as this week sees the anniversary of launch of the Flying Squad, part of the Metropolitan Police, who officially launched on 22 September 1921, following an announcement on 17 February that their horses would be replaced by cars.

Times took a bleak turn on the same day in 1939 when petrol rationing was introduced in Great Britain. Brand name petrol was stopped and replaced by a national petrol pool. Fuel for commercial vehicles was coloured with a red dye to try and prevent it from being used in private cars, giving birth to the now infamous, “red diesel”.

THE TECH GUY WASHED AWAY As you can see, our regular Tech Guy column written by our friend at Blue Moon Solutions, Richard Cavender, is not in this week's edition of Sunshine News. We wanted to explain why.

On Friday the 13th, Richard and his wife Liesl had to evacuate their home after advice from the police. This was due to the danger of flooding after days of torrential rain. They were only able to take their 2 dogs with them and had to leave behind their 5 cats.

The rain did not let up all through Saturday and on Sunday disaster struck when a river wall collapsed and millions of litres of floodwater struck their house and completely destroyed their home.

Everything has gone.

Their home. Their car. Their practical and sentimental possessions. Their 5 cats. Richard has found 1 of the cats, but the other 4 are still missing.

Richard and Liesl both worked from home and both businesses have now gone so they have no income. All they have right now is the clothes they were wearing on the day they were evacuated.

The insurance system in Spain does not cover "Acts of God", and even though there is the Consorcio scheme, this could take many months to settle their claim.

To make matters more difficult, Richard also suffers from Ankylosing Spondylitis, a painful, progressive form of inflammatory arthritis. It mainly affects the spine but can also affect

other joints, tendons and ligaments.

Richard filmed an emotional video in which he surveys the area where his house once stood.

"This used to be my office, this used to be my garden, and this is where the house was" you can hear him say.

"We had my 50th birthday party here and our 25th wedding anniversary" he goes on to say, before realising his fridge is visible 30 feet away from what used to be the kitchen.

Richard and Liesl are working hard to re-start their businesses and to start rebuilding their lives.

Exili il.lustrat Exhibition The Archaeological Museum of Rojales will be the setting next week for the ‘Exili il.lustrat’ art exhibition.

This exhibition, which is doing the rounds across the Valencia Region, pays homage to the 500,000 and more men and women who were forced to leave Spain in exile at the end of the Civil War in 1939.

Exili il.lustrat offers visitors a glimpse of what life as an exile was like almost 80 years ago via the written biographies accompanying the portraits of the 36 exiles that have been drawn in a repertoire of different styles by a number of different illustrators.

ALMOST €4000 RAISED FOR HELP AT HOME GOTA FRÍA FUND AT THE EMERALD ISLE ON TUESDAY

A massive thankyou to all the superb artistes who generously gave up their time

In aid of local people affected by Gota Fria flooding. Come along for a fabulous afternoon of fun and fundraising. The event will be hosted by Stevie Spit and there will be a Grand Prize Raffle and an Auction to help raise money for those in need.

we have chosen to work with Help Vega Baja which will co-ordinate the distribution of the items where they are needed most and will present individual cases to its Crisis Committee who will allocate help as and where it is needed most.

The event will also provide a collection point for those wishing to donate clothes, dry or tinned food stuffs, bottled water, school materials or toiletries. As well as the fundraising there will also be lots of fun; with bars and restaurants serving food and drinks.

22 Last week, in part one of Daniella’s story, I told you how Daniella’s start to life was fraught with incidents requiring frequent trips to the hospital and hundreds of different tests.

She was eventually diagnosed with Mitochondrial disease.

This disease is incredibly rare, and its symptoms can include seizures, strokes, severe developmental delays, inability to walk, talk, see, and digest food combined with a host of other complications.

Daniella needed specialist medication and equipment, much of which was only available privately - i.e. not with government help from the health system.

I went to see the embassy and spoke with them at depth about Daniella’s condition.

When speaking with the embassy I was told to do what any normal mum does & get a job and put Daniella into nursery (keeping in mind there are NO special needs nurseries in the area).

I have been back and forth trying to get them to help but until she is 3 and can be assessed whether or not she

Daniella can hardly hold her head up. She cannot talk. She can only see me if I am close up as her vision is deteriorating.

Mitochondrial disease is an awful incurable disease.

We were told it is not likely Daniella will get past 2 years old, But we are holding hope for her but sadly we just seem to be getting bad news after bad news recently.

We see her specialist in Valencia in October. We find the local paediatrician very difficult to deal with as it appears as she doesn’t have much knowledge about this condition, and it feels as though she fobs us off all the time.

We all have mitochondria Mitochondria exist in nearly every cell of the human body, producing 90 percent of the energy the body needs to function.

The supervisor of the hospital actually spoke badly about me to the cleaner? Why? None of this was my fault and all I did was calmly wait and worry that my daughter wasn’t getting food and no one seemed to care.

In a person with mitochondrial disease, the mitochondria are failing and cannot convert food and oxygen into lifesustaining energy.

I had already been begging the week before for a spare in case anything happened to this one, but it seems to they are hard to come by.

We find ourselves selfmedicating, talking to support groups for info, and doing most things by our selves. She has physio 3 times a week.

Only this week we had a cleaner of the hospital throw away Daniella’s tube that hooks onto her feeding tube to be able to feed her, I only had 1 so this meant I could not feed her, the hospital just wanted me to get on with it and sort it myself but obviously, I cannot.

Life is hectic and I think the hardest thing about it all is how unknown Mitochondrial disease is.

The hospital only holds one reserve for another little boy that has a feeding tube, but not for Daniella.

Not only to people in general but to Doctors too. It makes it so complicated.

For many, mitochondrial disease is an inherited genetic condition, while for others the body’s mitochondria can be affected by other environmental factors.

My purpose for this blog is this to raise awareness for MITOCHONDRIAL DISEASE & to bring to light how special needs children don’t get the help they need or deserve.

The parts of the body that need the most energy, such as the heart, brain, muscles and lungs, are the most affected by mitochondrial disease.

It is so heartbreaking.

EXCITEMENT BUILDS AS RUGBY WORLD CUP FEVER ARRIVES The very best in the world of Rugby will go toe to toe over the next few weeks on the biggest stage possible to try and name themselves as World Cup Champions 2019. The star-studded event will take place in Japan and starts today for six weeks and concludes on Saturday, November 2nd.

The Rugby World Cup heads to Asia for the first time which has excited visiting fans from all over the world to experience a new country hosting the prestigious event.

New Zealand are unsurprisingly hot favourites to win their third World Cup on the bounce

and the fourth in their history.

The pure tenacity, speed, skill and focus which they display, will make them the team to beat in the 6-week long showpiece, but this year has a different feel and the gap has closed between the Northern and Southern hemisphere in International rugby.

I personally feel there could be a new winner this time around and many sides will fancy lifting the famous trophy.

New Zealand are joined in Pool B with South Africa. The All Blacks will face The Springboks in the opening game in that group on Saturday which will be one of the games of the tournament. South Africa are in great form going into the tournament and they will be hoping to capitalize on that and erase the memory of losing to Japan in 2015. Both sides have a tricky Pool B fixture against Italy and the Azzuri will be hoping to cause an upset against either side.

Sad day for football as Ex-Rangers captain dies at age of 43 after battle with motor neurone disease Former Rangers defender Fernando Ricksen has died at the age of 43 after a long battle with motor neurone disease.

The much-loved Dutchman spent six years at the Scottish giants and had played 12 times for his country.

In October 2013 Ricksen revealed that he was terminally ill and had been diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (motor neurone disease).

Since his diagnosis, Ricksen had made many public appearances and had openly spoken about the disease and desire to raise awareness.

He won 7 trophies in 6 years at Ibrox from 2000 before moving to Zenit St. Petersburg in 2006 where he ended up winning the UEFA Cup in 2008 beating Rangers in the final.

England have been somewhat frustrating to watch at times this year with their inconsistency and drop in concentration during important moments in games but had a solid Six Nations finishing second to Wales. They currently sit 3rd in the World rankings after some great performances including their last 2 warm-up Internationals where they beat Ireland 57-15 and then Italy 37-0.

Pool C won't be an easy ride for Eddie Jones boys as they do face two very respected opponents in Argentina and France in one of the most competitive groups in the competition. Manu Tuilagi could be a huge player for England with his speed, power and sublime offloads. England are as strong as anybody on their day and I'm sure they will be relieved not to have the expectation and pressure of the 2015 World Cup. It sure is set to be 6 weeks of thrilling Rugby in Japan but there can only be one winner.
