ORIHUELA COSTA COCAINE NETWORK DISBANDED

Officers from the Guardia Civil arrested an individual on the Orihuela Costa for an alleged crime of drug trafficking, when he was intercepted by officers as he prepared to pick up a postal shipment, from Panama, containing 132 grams of high purity cocaine. In early January officers at Madrid´s Adolfo Suárez Airport identified a parcel declared as "documents", from Panama. After an initial analysis, it was possible to verify, through X-rays, that the contents of said package had characteristics that led the agents to think that it could be a narcotic

substance. Further investigation confirmed their suspicions that the package contained cocaine. A court order permitted surveillance on the package which led officers from Pilar de la Horadada to monitor the recipient on the Orihuela Costa. After numerous inquiries, it was concluded that both the name of the recipient and the sender of the package were fictitious and the address provided for the delivery of the package was an empty house, in which no person resided, and so contact would have to be made for the recipient to collect the parcel.

After identifying the true identity of the recipient, the officers were able to monitor the collection, which was signed for in the fictitious name, prompting the immediate arrest of the individual. The detainee, the recipient of the package, oversaw finding potential buyers on the Orihuela Costa, thus creating a client portfolio which the officers now have access to. A second person, a female, was also identified as being part of the distribution network. Thanks to these two arrests, the Guardia Civil have broken up what Continued on page 3

Minimum Wage Increase The new minimum wage amounts that should apply for the year 2020 will be 31.66 euro per day or 950 euro per month, depending on whether the salary is fixed by days or months. This means that the annual calculation cannot be less than 13,300 euro. The calculation is based on a salary paid in 14 payments, otherwise, if paid by calendar month, the minimum is 1,108.33 euro per month. Part-time workers are also to be paid the same amount, albeit proportional

to their actual hours worked. Temporary workers whose services to the same company do not exceed 120 days will have a minimum salary of 44.99 euro per day. Domestic employees who work for hours on an external basis, the rate is set at 7.43 euro per effective hour worked. There are a few exceptions to the ruling, which employees can check at their local social security office.

Simulated Storm Damage In the latest move that seems a lot like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted, a simulator has been created which can predict the water flow during times of flooding as the area experienced in September. Residents, businesses and visitors alike experienced first-hand how flooding can affect them, but this new simulator, called “Smart River Basin-Cuencas Fluviales Inteligentes” means that next time a DANA happens there may be more of a warning that flooding is imminent.

HISTORIC TOURISM FIGURES Despite doom and gloom being spread through some media portals, Brexit, the collapse of Thomas Cook, false reports of terror threats, and snow in Benidorm amongst the stories, the Valencia region closed 2019 with a record high in international tourism.

In total, more than 9.5 million tourists arrived in the Costa Blanca´s region, spending more than 9.6 billion euro, 7.9% more than in 2018, according to surveys published by the INE Frontier Tourist Movement (Frontur) and Tourism expenditure Survey (Egatur). The total number of international tourists reached 9,566,566, an increase of 3.9%, year on

year. The Regional Secretary of Tourism, Francesc Colomer, described the figures as "positive" data and stressed that they are figures that mark the evolution "to seasonal adjustment and increased profitability because it is not just about counting tourists but to see more resources to our territory."

an increase of 6.2%, as did road transport, increasing by 0.4%. Business and professional trips also increased last year, growing by 0.9%. The financial value also increased by 7.9%, far more than the 2.8% national average growth, with tourists spending 9.6 billion euro.

There was however a decline in visitors from the United Kingdom, down 1.5%, but others have increased, such as the French, up 7%, the Nordic countries, up 13.3%, and the German market, increased by 8.8%.

Despite the slight drop in numbers, the British tourists spent more in volume terms, handing over almost 2.5 billion, followed by the French who spent 1.3 billion, an increase of 15.2%, then the Nordic countries who spend over a billion, increasing by 9.6%.

Passengers through the region´s airports also increased by 4.4% year on year, with Alicante-Elche Airport leading the growth with

The average daily spend stood at 107.2 euro in 2019, 9.9% higher than that recorded in 2018.

Open Air Bidding The company which manages air traffic control in Italian airspace, ENAV, has launched a company in Spain so as they can bid to run 12 of the privatised control towers in Spain. Although not as problematic as in France, there has been numerous industrial disputes in Italy over the last year, which the company hope will not mar its bid to take over the operation in Spain. Alicante-Elche Airport is one of the twelve which is open to the new tender, along with the airports at A Coruña, Cuatro Vientos (Madrid), Fuerteventura, Ibiza, Jerez (Cádiz), La Palma, Lanzarote, Sabadell (Barcelona), Sevilla, Valencia and Vigo. The Italian group explained that this contest is an opportunity for ENAV to expand its business outside Italy and pursue a strategy

initiated in recent times to enter markets in which until now were not available. The economic value of the Spanish tender will be around 140 million euro for a period of 7 years, with the possibility of renewal for another 3. ENAV closed the first 9 months of 2019 with a stable net profit at 98.8 million and consolidated revenues of 691.3 million euro, 2.3% more than in the same period of 2018. The traffic routes and terminals increased 7.6% and 4.4% respectively in terms of service units compared to September 30, 2018. AENA has launched a public tender to award the management of the control towers at 12 airports, which were privatised in 2011. The current operation at Alicante-Elche Airport includes several native English speakers as well as Spanish staff.

THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME By Tracy Storer, Senior Partner & Financial Planner, Chorus Financial After a successful 6 years working for a large UK financial services firm, I took a brave and bold move to enter the international market place some 9 years ago. Fed up with working in the city, the commuting, the cold weather and dark nights, I seized the opportunity to swap city life for beach life and made my move to the Costa Blanca. What an eye-opener it was! I went from working in a senior role within a large corporate financial services company, where I was well respected, to entering a very maledominated industry here in Spain, where I knew from that very first day, I had a mountain to climb! It didn’t take me long to see the magnitude of differences between how Financial Advisers operated in Spain compared to the UK and it amazed me back then, as it does today, some of the things that go on. It was tough, I constantly felt like I was swimming against the tide trying to create a reputation that was honest and trustworthy within an industry that just seemed to have such a bad reputation. I remember being embarrassed about being a financial adviser, watching people’s reactions when I told them what I did, as they thought ‘oh another one of them’

but the truth was, I wasn’t another one of them. This was my career and reputation, along with being the home where I was raising my family, and I was very much in this for the long term. I was good

a

financial adviser that had just entered a country where ‘good’ and ‘financial adviser’ was rarely used in the same sentence. What I didn’t know back then was that this was going to be the biggest challenge of my life! My journey over the last 9 years has had its lows, most particularly seeing the industry ‘named and shamed’ in what felt like every edition of every

newspaper following the notorious collapse of Continental Wealth Management, a firm who operated not too far from my own office. Chorus had been publicly warning against their practices for several years prior to t h e

collapse, but we were also central in supporting many of their victims afterwards. This was a tough and emotional time as we got to see first-hand the damage that the company had done to real people’s lives. This left the reputation of our entire industry in tatters, and trust at an all-time low. These lows did, of course, help me develop as an adviser, but I’d say my

ethics, honesty and values have got me where I am today. Let’s not forget the highs, getting to meet and work with my 100+ clients. Easily my biggest achievement to date is knowing that the very first client I took on all those years ago is still happily my client, as are each and every one of the clients I’ve taken on since. I’m incredibly proud of that and it tells me I must be doing something right! Being part Chorus has been a special experience. We’ve won multiple awards, our clients are always recommending us to others, and we’ve been very honoured to have regularly sat on panels with the British Consulate and other prestigious speakers. These are things that make me feel proud and motivated. They also tell me I’m doing a good job and are the reasons why I will continue to provide the best service for my existing clients and new clients for many years to come. Make sure you do your homework when getting financial advice. Make sure the company are regulated, they offer transparency etc. But also make sure that the financial adviser is right for you. Ask for references, look for reviews, be confident with your choice. Call me today on 693 107 044 or email t.storer@chorusfinancial.es.

Fly High

A Fishy Tale

If the job of your dreams has been to fly around the world meeting new people in exotic destinations, you could be in luck, as Emirates has launched a cabin crew recruitment campaign in Spain.

Torrevieja’s Guardia civil recently discovered over 800 kilos of fish including Octopus, Sea Bass, Grouper in a raid on a local warehouse, two restaurants and a fish mongers, who had sold the fish to hotels in the Torrevieja area.

The next selection day is taking place in Valencia on 11 February, which is an open day for potential new recruits. To qualify, you must be at least 21 years old at the time of applying and have a reach with an extended arm of 212 centimetres, standing on tiptoe. Although not mandatory, Emirates recommends candidates complete an online application on their Emirates Group Careers website before attending. Emirates offers benefits such as tax-free income, free and shared accommodation in Dubai, free transportation to and from work, medical and dental coverage, as well as discounts on shopping and leisure activities in Dubai.

The fish valued at over 10,000 euros was said to not meet fishing standards for human consumption, was being sold as fresh and was untraceable in its origin. It also had no sell or consume by dates and did not meet size or weight regulations.

Madrid airport had a particularly busy Monday this week. Firstly, the airspace had to be closed on account of drones being spotted flying in the area, then shortly afterwards an Air Canada flight bound for Toronto declared an emergency after one of the wheels became damaged when the aircraft was taking off. The plane circled above the city burning fuel, and was escorted by fighter jets who were inspecting the undercarriage, before landing safely. Emergency services chased the aircraft along the runway where it stopped to allow engineers to assess the best way of disembarking passengers.

Although Mercadona has reinforced its leadership in the distribution sector in Spain, Lidl saw the most growth in 2019 and is now chasing Dia in the race for third place. Mercadona grew 0.6%, reaching a market share of 25.5% and achieving a penetration in 91.7% of households.

Unemployment in the Valencian Community rose by 8,998 people in January, up 2.52%, with respect to the month of December and the third largest growth of all the autonomies, with which the total number of unemployed stands at 366,562, a decrease of 6,938 people in interannual terms (-1.86%).

Sandra Sanchez announced this week that maintenance of 400 lights on the NN32 between Punta Prima and La Mata will begin. Due to the traffic in the area, two trucks with baskets will undertake the work to make the completion deadline of 2 months.

THINKING ABOUT A PET RABBIT? 8 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

Rabbits do not make good pets for young children. We cannot depend on children to be their primary caregiver. Rabbits are prey animals and can be easily startled by loud noises and sudden movements. Rabbits tend to be afraid when picked up as they often feel like they have been picked up by a predator. Preferably you should pet them on the ground level and use food as a reward to get them used to human interaction. Waiting until children are older to get a rabbit is much better for the rabbit and by then children can have a better understanding of responsibility, empathy and their pet's basic needs. Rabbits are social animals. In the wild, they live with other rabbits. They feel like they must always be alert for potential predators, having more than one rabbit shares the responsibility. If you plan on getting more than one rabbit, consider spaying or neutering at least one of the bunnies.

2

3

Rabbits need space to exercise and play. As in the wild rabbits enjoy running and hopping through fields

surroundings, so building a large pen or run would be ideal before getting a pet rabbit. Rabbits can often be litter trained like cats and live as house pets? Remember that rabbits need to be constantly chewing, so be sure to rabbit-proof your home. Keep wires out of reach or cover them with plastic tubes or tape them out of reach. Make sure they have a constant supply of fresh hay or grass to keep them busy.

4

Rabbits need more than just carrots in their diet. In fact, carrots should only be given as a treat. Iceberg lettuce is also commonly given to rabbits but is actually dangerous. Other types of lettuce are safer than iceberg lettuce. Rabbits enjoy fresh grass, hay and pellets. They should also get fresh vegetables as part of their diet. Kale, broccoli, romaine lettuce and parsley are some of the favourites.

7

Hygiene is very important for rabbits and other pets. It is important to clean your rabbit's pen daily and do an overall clean once a week. Food and water bowls or bottles should be regularly cleaned as well as their bedding. Rabbits themselves are very clean animals and spend much time grooming their fur, so bathing is not usually required. Be sure to groom long-haired rabbits to keep their fur from becoming matted, and check the hair around their tail is clean, if necessary you can wash only the bottom half of their fur.

8

Rabbits make wonderful companions when enough research and care goes into their upkeep. If you are looking to bring a rabbit into your home, check with local rescues if there are any bunnies up for adoption, they may put you in contact with rescues that take in rabbits. Consider adoption before purchasing a rabbit as many rabbits get abandoned every year and await a second chance at life.

Our truth may make us feel inadequate if we try to measure ourselves against others and sadly most of us do this often. The more we compare ourselves to others the harder it is for us, to say we can’t do something, say something or be someone. And we feel the shame of letting others

So how do we safeguard ourselves from the depth of pain that comes when someone doesn’t deliver the goods and step up to the mark?

We all have our standards and they vary on different subjects and based on our experiences. When we look at other’s we can tend to judge their actions and behaviours based on our knowledge, but this is really a big mistake. How can we all deliver the same, when we have not experienced the same? It’s impossible. It only gets worse when we try and meet someone’s expectations when we haven’t got the ability or know-how, we put ourselves under a great deal

Relationships must be built on foundations of trust, openness and safety, not judgement and expectation. Expectation is like trading, you give me this and I will give you that. How can we hope to be close to others if we have such conditions, especially if we don’t let people know us truly? Many a relationship has been broken because one person wanted something the other was unable to deliver. Not through not wanting to, but not being able to. If you are in a similar situation now, where you feel let down or misunderstood, it may not be too late to salvage the bond. All it really takes is stepping out of your comfort zone and risking allowing another to really know you.

Do we lower our expectations? Is it that simple? Recently I had a conversation with someone who is always deeply disappointed, particularly by one person they are close to and they were telling me how they were tired of always feeling let down. So, we tried to find ways we could use to help alleviate the negative feelings, whilst still continuing the relationship on a warm and loving level.

courage to ask questions, so we can get more information. But do this we must if we want to ease our own disappointment and that of others.

know exactly what is going on with us, if we don’t even feel confident in our expression? So, is the answer to having less expectation in awareness and communication? I think so. It’s not surprising to know that most misunderstandings are due to a lack of good communication. Of being able to speak our truth without fear or rejection. Invulnerability.

ourselves down. As individuals, we all walk different paths and have different lessons to learn. We must remember that how you perceive something is based on your life. If you do this you become more open in your awareness of others and their capabilities. It takes great courage to be ourselves sometimes and it also takes great

TOYOTA TO RESTRICT ACCELERATION The Toyota Motor Corporation has this week announced that it has developed an Acceleration Suppression Function that takes advantage of “big data”, that is, data collected from connected vehicles, to help detect abnormal throttle operation and control acceleration.

Toyota is planning to gradually install this feature in new vehicles by introducing a new Accelerator Control System starting this summer - initially in Japan. With the aim of preventing serious accidents and reducing the damage caused by the improper use of the accelerator, Toyota introduced the

Intelligent Clearance Sonar (ICS) - in 2012. Currently, 32 models, which represent 83% of the Toyota and Lexus range, have ICS. More recently, in 2018, Toyota incorporated an Acceleration Control System in case of improper use of the accelerator in some existing vehicles. Now, the system can be installed in 12 models and, since December last year has been fitted to 20,300 cars. However, these devices and systems only work if the sensors detect obstacles such as other vehicles or walls. Toyota's new function seeks to control acceleration due to abnormal throttle operation, even if no obstacle is present.

During the development phase, Toyota took real incidents as a reference, where the cause was considered to have been a misuse of the accelerator pedal and analysed the situations in which the pedal had been depressed thoroughly. Subsequently, the characteristics of these situations were compared with the data collected by the connected vehicles. By combining the existing ICS system with the new Acceleration Suppression Function, Toyota believes that it can further reduce the number of accidents caused by improper use of the accelerator pedal in parking lots and other places. Toyota also plans to share the new system widely with other car manufacturers.

pillars: 1) introducing improvements in car safety, through the implementation of this new function and the latest version of the Toyota Safety Sense system; 2) through educational initiatives to inform people, such as the Support Toyota programs that promote greater awareness of safety benefits, and 3) through activities aimed improving traffic environments.

Motoring History

A LOT LIKE BUSES! It was on 7th February in 1875 that Yataro Iwasaki died at the age of 50. He was the founder of Mitsubishi, the name being a compound of mitsu ("three") and hishi, which literally means "water chestnut", but is used in Japanese to denote a diamond or rhombus, hence the logo formed of three diamonds, originally created by combining the Iwasaki family crest and the oak-leaf crest of the Yamanouchi family, who were leaders of the Tosa clan, which controlled the part of Shikoku where Yatarō was born.

We will try to move to happier news now and in 2007 celebrations were taking place in Scotland when FirstGroup purchased Laidlaw International for $3.6 billion. Although

Greyhound UK Bus Mk3, rolled off the production line.

There is another death to commemorate, this time in 1938, when Harvey S. Firestone, founder of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company, died at the age of 89 in Miami Beach, Florida. At the age of 31, Firestone developed a new way of manufacturing carriage tyres and began production with only 12 employees. Like buses, they often come in threes and so our third commemoration dates to 1964, when Flaminio Bertoni, an Italian automobile designer, died at the age of 61. He had been responsible for some of the most radical concepts

Based on a design produced for StandardTriumph in 1957 by Italian designer Citroen H Van Giovanni Michelotti, the Spitfire was FirstGroup's interest was primarily the school and transit bus operations produced from 1962 to 1980. gear of the Triumph Herald saloon, and was manufactured at the StandardTriumph works at Canley, in Coventry. We finish off with another jump forward to 9 February. Nothing to do with buses or commemorative deaths, but in 2005, a Chinese truck driver was arrested for kidnapping two toll booth operators to save the equivalent of £0.70. The driver, 21, from Taizhou city, Zhejiang province, was stopped at a toll station when he tried to drive off without paying.

Jumping into tomorrow, 8 February, but sticking with buses, it was in 1956 that the AEC Routemaster double-decker bus went into service in London. Originally unveiled in 1954, the first bus route to be operated by the Routemaster was the 2, with vehicle RM1. The Routemaster was developed between 1947 and 1956

F.A. CUP ROUND-UP they put in a performance tonight." It remains an exciting season for Liverpool fans with the crunch games still to come. They have a 22-point lead at the top of the Premier League and are in the last 16 of both the Champions League and FA Cup. In the final Fourth round replay, Jose Mourinho's Tottenham faced Ralph Hasenhttl's on form Southampton side at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Saints always looked like a stern test for the north London opponents having entered the game in fine Premier League form and on the back of a strong display at

Liverpool, despite the 4-0 scoreline. But just as in the original fixture, it was Tottenham that made the stronger start and they took the lead after just 12 minutes when record-signing Tanguy Ndombele looked to have scored but the goal was eventually given as an own goal from Saints defender Jack Stephens. Shane Long found the equaliser on 33 minutes and Southampton seemed to have more energy and attacking threat as the teams approached half time. Southampton started the second half in the same fashion and got their

Ten man Monte prevailed over their opponents on a day when it could be said that proper football defeated the dark arts of the game. Being honest, after last years encounter, this was never going to be one for the purists and Bigastro didn't do themselves any favours from the off. It's clear that their primary (and some might say, only) tactic is to stop the opposition playing and then pick up whatever slim chances fall their way after that. So, an unwelcome, relentless, sequence of niggly fouls on their opponents with a dash of gamesmanship when they felt slighted in any way was the order of the day. The referee was going to need a sharp pencil and a lot of cojones. A well taken goal from DAMIEN (20), who sprang the offside trap majestically and a dubious offside-looking goal from Bigastro at the end (their only serious shot on goal) were the only highlights in a brutish affair as Monte tried manfully to overcome a belligerent and bellicose opponent. All square

at the interval. Half Time: Bigastro CF 1 1 CD Montesinos Despite being roared on by a substantial crowd of 500+ the game soon slipped into the previous stop-start scenario. Foul, followed by a cluster of players around the ref, followed by vigorous gesticulating, followed by well, you get the picture. Neither side offered a great deal, but the tide seemed to have turned when MACCAN (23) was shown red for a seemingly innocuous foul (particularly when one looked at some incidents previously that had gone completely unpunished!). How would Monte cope with the inevitable bombardment that was to follow? The answer was, not too badly. Surprisingly, the reshuffle saw them have their best spell of a particularly poor game. The deadlock was finally broken when the effervescent LUCAS (7) broke away out wide and fired a delightful cross for the waiting GONZALO (22) to bundle home. The cat being well and truly out of the bag now, Bigastro cranked it up a notch with a plethora of 10/10 acrobatic dives and imagined dirty deeds. All rather obvious and pathetic really. But all the palaver was all for

Continued from page 24 reward when Danny Ings bagged his 16th goal of the season after a stunning counter-attack started by the brilliant Nathan Redmond. Going behind finally seemed to bring Tottenham to their senses and they pulled their trophy dreams out of the fire by hitting back in the 78th minute thanks to Lucas Moura. The Brazilian dashed up the pitch by playing a one-two with Dele Alli and proceeded to beat Angus Gunn from outside the box to send waves of celebration around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

nothing when, pushing forward, they were caught cold on the counter right at the death when DAMIEN (20) completed his brace with a satisfying run and chip to seal Bigastro's fate.

Spurs then won the tie when Son Heungmin converted an 87th-minute penalty. He had been fouled by Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn after a fine pass from substitute Dele Alli had created the opportunity. The Fifth Round of the F.A cup will begin on March 2 and games are yet to be selected for live broadcast but there will be 4 live games shared between BT Sport and BBC

F.A. CUP ROUND-UP

It was a thrilling midweek set of replays in the F.A Cup and proved that the magic of the cup is still alive.

Newcastle booked their place in the fifth round after a five-goal thriller against Oxford United. A superb individual goal from Allan SaintMaximin helped Newcastle edge past Oxford in extra time, despite a stirring comeback from the League One side. The Magpies raced into what seemed a comfortable 2 goal lead with Sean Longstaff and Joelinton scoring to put Steve Bruce's men into a 2-0 lead after just half an hour. Sam Rickett's gutsy League one side never gave up and got their reward with two late goals in the final minutes of the game courtesy of a superb Liam Kelly free-kick and then Nathan Holland equalised in the 94th minute before a moment of genius from SaintMaximin sealed the game in extra time for Newcastle.

Coventry City crashed out of their fourth-round FA Cup replay in a dramatic penalty shootout against their ground-share landlords Birmingham City. The Sky Blues were two minutes away from victory after twice taking the lead in a pulsating tie against the Championship side. Amadou Bakayoko had put them ahead early in the second half only for Harlee Dean to head home from close range in stoppage time to send the tie into extra-time. Coventry City boss Mark Robins has joked that it was in Birmingham's destiny to progress to the last 16 of the FA Cup. Pep Clotets side came from behind twice at St. Andrews in both the final moments of normal and extra time

Wayne Rooney was on the score sheet with a penalty for Derby County once again as they beat Northampton 4-2 at Pride Park. The win for Derby means that Rooney will face his old club Manchester United. He is sure to get a superb reception when he faces his former side. Rooney is Manchester United's all-time leading goalscorer

with their 120th-minute equaliser a real dagger in Sky Blues hearts.

Blues winger Jeremie Bela forced the game into a penalty shoot-out in the dying moments but was as surprised as anybody in the stadium when he watched his cross loop over Marko Marosi and into the net. In the resulting shoot-out, missed from Jamie Allen and Liam Walsh saw Citys hopes of a round five trip to Leicester City fade away. Reading also booked their place in the fifth round with another thrilling encounter against Cardiff City which ended 3-3 before a penalty shootout decided the game. The Bluebirds threw away a twogoal lead in normal, with the Royals refusing to be beaten. Josh Murphy scored Cardiff's opener before Robert Glatzel doubled the lead after the break. But Omar Richards and Andy Rinomhota netted in quick succession to force extra-time. Then Murphy's second of the evening appeared to seal the win, but Yakou Meite netted his third goal in just over a week against the Welsh club to take

it to penalties. In the other game on Tuesday night, Liverpool fielded an inexperienced under 23's side to face League One outfit Shrewsbury after the recent controversy regarding the Premier League winter break. A Reds side with an average age of 19 years and 102 days set up a tie at Chelsea with a 1-0 win after a fortunate own goal courtesy off Shrewsbury defender Shaun Williams fifteen minutes from time. Neil Critchley took charge of the game in Jurgen Klopp's absence. "There was a message at half-time and at full-time [from Klopp]," said under-23s boss Neil Critchley. "There was a message before the game that Chelsea away could be an opportunity for one or two of them and
