An Evening Prayer (AAHH)

If I have wounded any soul today, if I have caused one foot to stray, if I have walked in my own willful way, dear God, forgive.

If I have uttered idle words or vain, if I have turned aside from want or pain, lest I offend some other through the strain, dear God, forgive.

Sunshine Cathedral Affirmation

Sunshine Cathedral is a different kind of church where:

*Our God is love.

*Kindness is our worship.

*Compassion is our prayer.

*The sacred value of all people is our creed; and *Healing the hurts caused by hatred is our mission.

The Call to Worship

One: This is the day that has been made. All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Service of Praise

Crucifer - Deacon Sue Gallagher

Processional Hymn

Old 120th (Hymns of the Spirit)

O thou not made with hands, not throned above the skies, nor walled with shining walls, nor framed with stones of price,

more bright than gold or gem, God’s own Jerusalem!

Where’er the gentle heart finds courage from above, where’er the heart forsook warms with the breath of love, where faith bids fear depart; City of God! Thou art.

Where in life’s common ways with cheerful feet we go, when in Christ’s steps we tread who trod the way of woe; where Christ is in the heart, City of God! Thou art.

Not throned above the skies, nor gold-walled afar, but where Christ’s two or three, in that name gathered are; be in the midst of them, God’s own Jerusalem! Amen.

Opening Prayer (Sunshine Cathedral 2024 Daily Prayer)

Rev Dr Anne Atwell

One: Let us pray in unison:

Right now, I am tapping into the universal life force.

I wish for all who are suffering to find relief and hope. I deny fear any power over me.

I will be a bright light in the world.

I am serene and confident and full of joy.

I expect blessings.

Nothing is too good for me

May we all be strong and wise and loving.

May Love heal our world.

Let there be peace.

Amen.

The Wisdom of Daniel Chesney Kanter

Today we begin the walk to Jerusalem

The holy week

The demand that we face the broken path, the abuse of power.

Today we walk toward the dayspring breaking through, The Easter day of joy.

So let us prepare the way,

Let us join together this morning in worship

To see what holiness resides within and about us

To welcome in the day

And make clear the path for the work of God.

In these human words, God's voice is heard.

Thanks be to God.

The Wisdom of David O. Rankin

Rev Dr Durrell Watkins

Palm Sunday is found: whenever we are serving a noble and unpopular cause with selfless devotion, holding to the ideals of truth and justice; whenever we are seeking to uplift the fallen, to comfort the brokenhearted, to strengthen and encourage the weak and hopeless; whenever we are working bravely and persistently in the face of abuse and criticism to establish more equitable relations in the world; whenever we are sacrificing our lives in behalf of what we believe to be the service of love for all humanity. That is Palm Sunday!

In these human words, God's voice is heard.

Thanks be to God.

Gradual Ride On! Ride on in Majesty

Ride on! Ride on in majesty! O Christ, with brave humility, on lowly colt, your road pursue, as palms and cloaks are spread for you.

Ride on! Ride on in majesty! As crowds of people come to see and shout hosannas, lifting high their praise for one about to die.

2

The Good News According to Mark (11.7b-11; 14.3 & 9 New Jerusalem Bible)

They brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it.

Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting,

“Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David!

Hosanna in the highest heaven!”

Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple, and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head. Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.”

In these human words, God's voice is heard.

Thanks be to God.

Sung Response Ride On! Ride on in Majesty

Ride on! Ride on in majesty! Ride on in humble dignity; behold the ones you came to save from senseless life and sorrows grave.

Ride on! Ride on in majesty! For you have set your people free and we, remembering all your pain, now meet again to hail your reign.

Please be seated

All else is changing, Thou alone art sure. Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through joy eternal, Lord, abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy Truth before my wondering sight; Shine in my soul, fill me with life and light; Heav’n’s morning breaks, its glory now I see; Thou in rich blessing dost abide in me.

How Could Anyone

How could anyone ever tell you - you were anything less than beautiful?

How could anyone ever tell you - you were less than whole?

How could anyone fail to notice that your loving is a miracle?

How deeply you’re connected to my soul.

How could anyone ever tell you - you were anything less than beautiful?

How could anyone ever tell you - you were less than whole?

How could anyone fail to notice that your loving is a miracle?

How deeply you’re connected to my soul.

Service of Sacraments

Sacrament of Sharing (Tithes & Offerings)

Rev Dr Robert Griffin

Offering Prayer

One: Because we value our community and believe in our inspired mission, because we want every person to live with hope and joy, and because we know that even a little can mean a lot, we participate in the Sacrament of Sharing, the joyful giving of resources meant to help more and more people discover that they are God’s miracle and not God’s mistake.

All: We give what we can and do so with love. Every dime and every dollar given with the intention to bless others will make a difference in someone’s life. This brings us joy, and in this way, we worship. God bless our gifts to faithful service, for the sake of your love. Amen.

Eucharistic Intentions & Intercessions

9:00 Rev Kevin Tisdol /10:30 Deacon Michael Karban

One: Our hearts are set on God’s loving presence. Let us affirm our trust in God.

All: I believe in God, the Good, and in the message and mission of God’s anointed prophet, Jesus the Wayshower, who was born of Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was executed for empowering the powerless and restoring the dignity of the marginalized, and yet he lives in our hearts and ministry. I believe in the omnipresent power of divine Love, in the Blessed Community, in the sacred value of all people, and in life without end. Amen.

9:00 Rev Kevin Tisdol /10:30 Deacon Michael Karban

Mother-Father God, we affirm blessings for all who are on the Cathedral’s prayer list and for all who are on our hearts. We trust you to lead, guide, and direct each of us in the ways of happiness, well-being, and right action. We pray for those who hold authority in the nations of the world that they may be guided by wisdom and motivated by a love of justice and peace. We pray for our departed loved ones, (+) let light perpetual shine upon them. And with people all over the world we pray, May peace prevail on earth!

These prayers we offer in the names of all helpers of humanity, and in the spirit of Jesus, son of Mary, as we continue to pray as Jesus taught us:

Model Prayer

Creator which art in heaven, hallowed be thy names. Thy kin-dom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And leave us not in temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kin-dom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Please be seated.

The Lord’s Supper

9:00 Rev Kevin Tisdol /10:30 Deacon Michael Karban

Celebrant: We celebrate this Eucharist to the glory of God and with special intentions for peace in our world.

Rev Marian Cavagnaro & Rev Dr Anne Atwell

One: Referring to the Christian Mass, Thich Nhat Hanh said: “This piece of bread is the body of the whole cosmos. Look deeply and you notice the sunshine in the bread, the blue sky in the bread, the cloud and the great earth in the bread...What is not in a piece of bread? The whole cosmos has come together in order to bring to you this piece of bread. Eat it in such a way that you come alive, truly alive.”

One: The Apostle Paul wrote, “Is not the cup of blessing that we bless a participation in the life of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one loaf.”

All: At the Last Supper, Jesus said, “When you share this feast, (+) remember me.”

In his name, we share grape and grain, love and life. Amen.

Sung Response

For bread before us broken, for wine before us poured, for words which you have spoken, we give you thanks, O Lord.

In prayer that we’ll be strengthened and be again restored, in faith that you will aid us, we seek your table, Lord.

Invitation to Communion

Rev Kevin Tisdol

One: These are the gifts of God for all the people of God.

All: Thanks be to God.

Communion is Shared

The ushers will direct you row by row to come forward for Communion. If you would like a communion kit to serve yourself communion in your seat, tell your usher. “Taste and see that God is good.”

The Prayer of Protection

The light of God surrounds us; the love of God enfolds us. The power of God protects us; the presence of God watches over us. Wherever we are, God is.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK OUR PITHY SAYINGS

Someone asked me recently to list out some of our most often used pithy sayings at Sunshine Cathedral. They also asked about the opening I often use for public prayer (God of many names…) and then another person asked for a prayer formula I shared years ago in a prayer class. Here are the answers to all three questions.

First, the opening line I use for some prayers: “God of many names, Mystery beyond our naming…”

Secondly, the 5 step prayer formula: It is simply to recognize the Allness/Isness of Life that we call God, and since it is All-in-all, we must be part of it; that being true, ultimately all must be well. So, we rejoice and release the intention and energy of our prayers to the perfection of divine right action. The simple (and silly, but still accurate) example I gave for that formula was:

“God is. I Am. All is well. Hot damn. Peace out.”

And finally, some of the catch phrases that we used almost constantly at Sunshine Cathedral include:

I can go to piece instead of to pieces.

There’s not a spot where God is not. There is good for me and I ought to have it.

We are God’s miracle and not God’s mistake. There is grace equal to every need.

The future has infinite possibilities.

All people have sacred value.

I am part and parcel of God.

God is Love.

Have a blessed Holy Week and I hope to see you on Easter morinng!

SAINTS OF THE WEEK

March 24: Archangel Gabriel – a messenger in sacred literature. Gabriel appears to Daniel in the Hebrew scriptures and to both Mary and Zechariah in the New Testament. Gabriel is also mentioned in the Book of Enoch as well as in the traditions of Islam and the Baha’i Faith.

St. (Archbishop) Oscar Romero (1917-1980)—Martyr of El Salvador. As the violence of the death squads escalated Romero experienced a personal transformation as the voice of the poor and a fearless champion of justice. He was unafraid to confront the political, military, and even religious forces of oppression. The masses of poor found in him a shepherd who loved them. He was assassinated at the altar while saying Mass in a hospital.

March 25: The Annunciation to Mary, the Blessed Lady—Luke tells the story (1:26-38) of the visit of an angel to announce to a young Jewish girl that she would give birth to the messiah. The Church, from its very beginning, has given Mary a place of honor for being the mother of Jesus.

Ted Jennings (1942 – 2020) - a Chicago Theological Seminary professor who wrote books affirming Queer people the bible. He was an ordained Methodist minister who spent more than two decades teaching at Chicago Theological Seminary. He retired in 2017 as Professor Emeritus of Biblical and Constructive Theology. His books include: “The Man Jesus Loved: Homoerotic Narratives from the New Testament” and “Jacob’s Wound: Homoerotic Narrative in the Literature of Ancient Israel”. At CTS, Jennings initiated the Gay Studies program, which grew into the Center for LGBTQ Religious Studies.

March 26: Bishop Richard Allen (1760-1831)—Founder of African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Born a slave, Allen was sold to a Methodist farmer and was converted. After purchasing his freedom he felt called to preach. He felt the needs of African-Americans were best suited by the message of hope he heard in the Wesleyan movement. After many years of struggle against white control of Black churches, in 1816 he organized the first major black denomination, the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

March 27: Meister Eckhart (1260-1329)—Dominican theologian

6

and mystic. Eckhart’s writings were largely condemned in his lifetime, however he is today seen as a prophet of modern spirituality. He wrote in mystical and paradoxical terms of the union of the soul with God, of a God-consciousness that is attained only by emptying and detachment. His thoughts show many similarities to Zen Buddhism. He liked to say “Do not cling to the symbols, but get to the inner truth!”

March 28: Katherine Lee Bates, (Aug 12, 1859 – Mar 28, 1929) - author of “America the Beautiful,” was a lesbian.

March 29: Emmanuel Swedenborg (1688 – 1772) – Swedish scientist, philosopher, and Christian mystic. His writings influenced William Blake, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Balzac, and Helen Keller. His writings also offer the theological framework for the Swedenborgian Church.

March 30: Maimonides (1135 – 1204) - a Jewish rabbi and philosopher (sometimes called by his admirers the “second Moses”). He is considered the premier Jewish philosopher of the Middle Ages. Maimonides sought to harmonize faith and reason, and was open to elements of Neo-Platonism. He interpreted the bible allegorically and minimized anthropomorphic (human) characterizations of God.

Horatio W. Dresser (1866-1954) - His parents were students of Phineas P. Quimby. He was graduated from Harvard and later became a Swedenborgian minister. His many writings include The Christ Ideal, The Perfect Whole, Spiritual Health and Healing, Handbook of the New Thought, and The Power of Silence. He also compiled and edited a selection of Phineas Quimby’s works: The Quimby Manuscripts. Dresser believed, “Any individual can be, in time, what he [or she] earnestly desires to be, if he [or she] but set his [or her] face steadfastly in the direction of that one thing and bring all his [or her] powers to bear upon its attainment.”

Sister Thea Bowman (1937-1990)—African-American Franciscan. Thea Bowman was born in rural Mississippi. As a nun she worked to integrate her Catholic faith and her identity as an African-American woman. Being the only black face in a white religious order she tended to stand out! Rather than conforming to European models, she was determined to express her black cultural identity, but as a Catholic. She earned a doctorate in English, and was known as a spellbinding preacher. In her final struggle with breast cancer, her prayer was “Lord, let me live until I die.”

Not only will this improve work life for our ministry staff, it will make it easier for our Sunshine Cathedral community, local or global, to connect with each other, keep up with what’s going on, and posi8on Sunshine Cathedral for con8nued growth

There are three things you should know before we highlight what you can do:

1. We are upda8ng tools that our staff uses to run the daily opera8ons of our Sunshine Cathedral

2. We’re adding more ways to communicate and connect as a church, all while leaving current methods in place.

3. You will be able to determine how much you want to make this part of your experience with our church, but we encourage you to par8cipate.

Transi@oning. . .

If you use our current online giving plaCorm, easyTithe, there is nothing that you need to do. The official program transi8on will begin 2 April. Even doing this transi8on period you may con8nue to use easyTithe un8l April 30. It is an8cipated that by, or before this date, the integra8on will be completed.

EVERYONE, that Sunshine Cathedral has working email address will receive an invita8on to join the Realm Once approved, you will be giving access to set and maintain your own profile to include seUng up your weekly, bi-weekly or monthly online recurring giving; upload a selfie or you or your family, select groups you wish to par8cipate in, an downloadable app for your smart devices and much, much more.

For now, stay the course with any online giving and we will keep you updated on next steps. If you have any ques8ons, at any 8me, please contact Pastor Robert at 954.462.2004 ext 206 or by email at Robert@SunshineCathedral.org
