Announcements

One: Let us pray in unison: Right now, I am tapping into the universal life force. I wish for all who are suffering to find relief and hope. I deny fear any power over me. I will be a bright light in the world. I am serene and confident and full of joy. I expect blessings. Nothing is too good for me May we all be strong and wise and loving. May Love heal our world. Let there be peace. Amen.

Introit

God of Wonder, God of Thunder (COCS)

God of wonder, God of thunder, God of impact and release, God of riddle and of reason, God of passion and of peace – to your mystery and marvel we return to give you praise, every year with you beginning to the closing of our days.

Prophetic Witness

Come and go with me to that land, come and go with me to that land, come and go with me to that land where I’m bound (where I’m bound).

For we name you and we claim you, Father, Mother, Spirit, Friend: you are vision past our vision, you are end beyond our end; all the circles, all the cycles of our little finite phase now we give into your keeping, trusting you through all our days.

Come and go with me to that land, come and go with me to that land, come and go with me to that land where I’m bound. There’ll be freedom in that land, there’ll be freedom in that land, there’ll be freedom in that land where I’m bound (where I’m bound).

Sunshine Cathedral Affirmation Sunshine Cathedral is a different kind of church where: *Our God is love. *Kindness is our worship. *Compassion is our prayer. *The sacred value of all people is our creed; and *Healing the hurts caused by hatred is our mission.

There’ll be freedom in that land, there’ll be freedom in that land, there’ll be freedom in that land where I’m bound. Please be seated. Clarion Call

The Call to Worship One: This is the day that has been made. All: Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Rev Dr Durrell Watkins

Sung Response There’ll be justice in that land, there’ll be justice in that land, there’ll be justice in that land where I’m bound (where I’m bound).

Service of Praise

Come and Go with Me

There’ll be justice in that land, there’ll be justice in that land, there’ll be justice in that land where I’m bound.

God is Calling (CoCS)

Service of Proclamation

God is calling through the whisper of the Spirit’s deepest sighs; through the thrill of sudden beauties that can catch us by surprise. Flash of lightning, crash of thunder; hush of stillness, rush of wonder: God is calling – can you hear?

The Wisdom of Joseph S. Benner (Speaking of God Within Us) Rev Dr Anne Atwell

God is calling through the voices of our neighbors’ urgent prayers: through their longing for redemption and for rescue from despair. Place of hurt or face of needing; strident cry or silent pleading: God is calling – can you hear?

“Who am I? …I AM You, that part of you who IS and KNOWS; WHO KNOWS ALL THINGS, And always knew, and always was. Yes, I AM You, Your SELF; that part of you who says I AM and is I AM; that transcendent, innermost part of you…I, your Divine SELF. I, the I AM of you…” In these human words, God's voice is heard. Thanks be to God. Please rise as you are able.

God is calling through the music of sublime and human arts: through the hymns of earth and angels, and the carols of our hearts. Lift of joy and gift of singing; days and nights our praises ringing: God is calling – can you hear? 2

The Good News According to Mark (6.1-5, 7, 11-13 New Jerusalem Bible) Rev Dr Anne Atwell

Sign of Peace

You’ve got to ac-cent-u-ate the positive, e-lim-inate the negative, latch on to the affirmative, don’t mess with Mister In-between.

Jesus went to his home town, and his disciples accompanied him. With the coming of the Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and most of them were astonished when they heard him. They said, 'Where did the man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been granted him, and these miracles that are worked through him? This is the carpenter, surely, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joset and Jude and Simon? His sisters, too, are they not here with us?' And they would not accept him And Jesus said to them, 'A prophet is despised only in his own country, among his own relations and in his own house'; and he could work no miracle there, except that he cured a few sick people by laying his hands on them. Then he summoned the Twelve and began to send them out in pairs, giving them authority over unclean spirits. He told them that if any place would not welcome them and people refused to listen to them, they should shake off the dust under their feet as they walked away as evidence to them.' So they set off to proclaim repentance; and they cast out many devils, and anointed many sick people with oil and cured them.

You’ve got to spread joy up to the maximum, bring gloom down to the minimum, have faith or pandemonium li’ble to walk upon the scene. We better ac-cent-u-ate the positive, e-lim-inate the negative, latch on to the affirmative, don’t mess with Missus In-between.

Service of Sacraments Sacrament of Sharing (Tithes & Offerings) Rev Dr Robert Griffin Offering Prayer

9AM Gary Grieve | 10:30AM Rev Renwick Bell

One: Because we value our community and believe in our inspired mission, because we want every person to live with hope and joy, and because we know that even a little can mean a lot, we participate in the Sacrament of Sharing, the joyful giving of resources meant to help more and more people discover that they are God’s miracle and not God’s mistake.

In these human words, God's voice is heard. Thanks be to God. Please be seated. The Anthem

Homily

All: We give what we can and do so with love. Every dime and every dollar given with the intention to bless others will make a difference in someone’s life. This brings us joy, and in this way, we worship. God bless our gifts to faithful service, for the sake of your love. Amen.

Doxology

You Are My Hiding Place

The gift we now bring, this present, this token, these words can convey it, the joy of this day!

You are my hiding place, you always fill my heart with songs of deliverance whenever I am afraid, I will trust in you. I will trust in you.

What Gift Can We Bring?

When grateful we come, remembering, rejoicing, this song we now offer in honor and praise!

Let the weak say, ‘I am strong in the strength of our God.’ You are my hiding place, you always fill my heart with songs of deliverance whenever I am afraid, I will trust in you. Pastoral Prayer and Affirmations

We pray for the Sunshine Cathedral Global Fellowship and local congregation. We pray for all seekers of Truth, may they discover an Abiding Peace. We pray for all who govern that they may work tirelessly for justice, peace, and goodwill. We pray for any who might be hurting and we give thanks for grace equal to every need. We pray for those who grieve; may they be comforted.

Let There Be Peace on Earth

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me; let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be, with God our creator, family all are we. Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now. With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow: to take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally, let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.

We bless the memories of our (+) dearly departed, and we allow ourselves to be blessed by those memories. We affirm blessings for all who are on our prayer list and all who are on our hearts. And with people all over the world we pray, May peace prevail on earth! These prayers we offer in the names of all helpers of humanity, and in the spirit of Jesus, son of Mary, as we continue to pray as Jesus taught us: Model Prayer Creator which art in heaven, hallowed be thy names. Thy kin-dom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And leave us not in temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kin-dom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. Please be seated. In Lent, worship with us on Sundays and also pray with us on Thursdays. We will continue midday prayer on Facebook Monday – Saturday and you can watch your clergy discuss important topics most days on The Queer God Squad. Lent can be a profound time of spiritual renewal; let’s make it so. ASH WEDNESDAY – There will be no worship service on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 14) since it is Valentine’s Day, but we will be imposing ashes from 11 am to 1 pm on that day here at the Cathedral. A deacon will be present to impart ashes in the Front Steps/Narthex area. EVENSONG – Thursdays in Lent, beginning February 15 at 7 pm, we will have a weekly prayer service that will include readings, moments of silence, candle lighting, and choruses from the Taize tradition. Taize songs are choruses in multiple languages, usually scripture verses, that are repeated several times to create a meditative atmosphere and transport the worshiper beyond discursive thinking to a focused, rich, contemplative experience of the Divine. We are offering this as a spiritual discipline for Lent. CASA MONARCA – Join us Wednesday evenings for dinner and drinks at Casa Monarca (2980 N. Federal Hwy). Happy Hour menu available from 4:30 to close and portion of Wednesday night profits are donated to Sunshine Cathedral! This is a fun way to share food, fellowship, and make some extra coins for our wonderful church. SCCPA – Saturday, February 10 - SC Center for the performing Arts presents Latrice Royale (18+) Enjoy a wonderful evening of entertainment with Latrice Royale and then some! FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK What the Heck Kind of Church is This? by Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins (Senior Minister, Sunshine Cathedral) Someone told me last week they asked three people what kind of church Sunshine Cathedral is and they received three different answers. One said, “It’s a woke church; woke like Jesus.” The second person said, “It’s like a community center that also has really fun worship.” And the third person said, “They’re a little bit Oprah, a little bit Chopra, a little High Church, and a little bit Broadway.” I love it. Each answer is correct, and there are about a dozen other correct answers that could be given. Mostly, as we affirm weekly, Sunshine Cathedral is a different kind of church. Here is my “official” answer to the question (for this week, anyway): Sunshine Cathedral is a progressive, inclusive church where we focus on love rather than dogma and on relationships more than religious rules. We have several programs meant to help, entertain, and encourage people. We are part of the LGBTQ+ community but not limited to that community. We emerge from the Christian tradition but our community is not limited to Christians. Our Affirmation may best describe who we are and what we are about, "Sunshine Cathedral is a different kind of church, where our God is love, kindness is our worship, compassion is our prayer, the sacred value of all people is our creed, and healing the hurts caused by hatred is our mission." A PRAYER FOR 2024 by Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins (Put this prayer where you will see it every day and use it throughout 2024) Right now, I am tapping into the universal life force. I wish for all who are suffering to find relief and hope. I deny fear any power over me. I will be a bright light in the world. I am serene and confident and full of joy. I expect blessings. Nothing is too good for me. May we all be strong and wise and loving. May Love heal our world. Let there be peace. Amen. LENT - Lent is the season of preparation that precedes Easter. It’s a time to renew spiritual practices or take them deeper. Lent is a time for “alms-giving” (giving generously to church and charities), regular worship, and daily prayer. We invite you to keep a holy Lent and to use it as a time to grow spiritually. Lent begins Ash Wednesday, February 14. We will offer EvenSong on Thursdays in Lent. It will last about 25 minutes. 5

Mark arranged and orchestrated the music for Civil War Voices, which won six awards including “Best Musical” in the 2010 Midtown International Theatre Festival in New York. His latest venture in musical theater is “We’ll Meet Again,” which premiered at the Historic Savannah Theatre in Savannah, GA in 2022 to high acclaim. On November 12, 2019, Hayes conducted his Requiem in Brasília, Brazil featuring the Coro Sinfônico Communitário and Orquestra Sinfônica. He regularly conducts his works for chorus and orchestra at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. SAINTS OF THE WEEK February 4: Cornelius the Centurion — The story of Cornelius is told in Acts 10-11. He was an important military leader and a deeply religious person who was interested in Judaism. His story is significant in the growth of the early church because he and his family were among the first Gentile converts. His story is significant for gay and lesbian people because of Peter’s vision, which led him to go to Caesarea and visit this Gentile home. This vision led Peter to understand that, despite the laws of Leviticus, there was a higher law of love: “God has shown me that I should not call anyone profane or unclean.” February 5: St. Agatha (231 – 251) – a Sicilian saint who dedicated herself to a life of prayer, a “consecrated virgin.” A nobleman decided that he would persuade her to marry him. She rebuffed all his advances, and he eventually turned her in for being a Follower of the Christ Way. She was brought before a judge who just happened to be the very nobleman who turned her in for practicing her underground faith. He offered to drop the charges if she would marry him. She refused. He sentenced her to a brothel. The nobleman later offered to release her if she married him. She again refused and he sentenced her to prison and to torture. She was whipped, burned, and her breasts were removed. Despite such agonizing treatment, she never agreed to marry her tormentor. One night she had a vision of St. Peter whose intercessions, she believed, helped her wounds to heal. Eventually, however, she did die. Her intercessions are now thought to benefit women with breast cancer and women who have been assaulted. February 8: Martin Buber (1878-1965)— Jewish philosopher and theologian. Buber had a strong impact in reminding Christianity of its Jewish origins. He wrote that Jesus exemplified the highest ethical and spiritual ideals of Judaism. He was a champion of interfaith dialogue. He was influenced by the Hasidic movement in Eastern Europe and he believed that Jews and Arabs could find a just way to live together. Jacoba of Settesoli – follower and friend of St. Francis. Francis lovingly called her, “Brother Jacoba.” February 9: Helen Schucman (1909 – 1981) – a professor of clinical psychology at Columbia University in NYC for 18 years (retiring in 1976). Faculty meetings were increasingly acrimonious and Helen and her friend and colleague, Bill Thetford were beginning to dread them. Bill said to Helen, “There must be another way.” Soon after, Helen started receiving “inner dictation” (which she believed was coming from Jesus himself) and she started writing it down. The result is A Course in Miracles. The Course encourages people to love, forgive, believe in the absolute goodness and lovingness of God, and to release fear. By following the Course’s guidelines, students of the Course believe that inner peace and lasting joy are possible. The Course seems to blend therapeutic principles, Christian verbiage, and Eastern philosophy. It can be (and is) practiced by people of various faith traditions (and none). One of ACIM’s most famous quotes is: “Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies 7 the peace of God.”
