The Good News According to Mark (1.9, 12-19) Rev Dr Anne Atwell

Sign of Peace Jesus, Jesus, Oh, What a Wonderful Child

One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and was baptized by John there in the Jordan River. Immediately, Jesus went into the desert. There, for forty days, alone except for desert animals, he experienced temptations. And afterwards angels came and cared for him. Later, after John was arrested, Jesus went to Galilee to preach God’s Good News. “At last the time has come!” he announced. “God’s Realm is near! Let this good news help you turn your lives around.” Soon after, Jesus called the first four of his disciples.

Jesus, Jesus, oh, what a wonderful child. Jesus, Jesus, so holy, meek and mild: New life, new hope the child will bring. Listen to the angels sing, “Glory, glory, glory,” let the heavens ring. Jesus, Jesus, oh, what a wonderful child. Jesus, Jesus, so holy, meek and mild: New life, new hope the child will bring. Listen to the angels sing, “Glory, glory, glory,” let the heavens ring.

Doxology

Angels We Have Heard on High

Love Came Down at Christmas

Love came down at Christmas, Love all lovely, Love divine; Love was born at Christmas; star and angels gave the sign.

Angels we have heard on high, sweetly singing o’er the plains. And the mountains in reply, echo back their joyous strain.

Love shall be our token: love be yours and love be mine; Love to God and neighbor, love for plea and gift and sign.

Gloria in excelsis Deo, gloria in excelsis Deo. Come to Bethlehem and see. Christ whose birth the angels sing; come adore on bended kneed, Joy, our world now entering. Gloria in excelsis Deo, gloria in excelsis Deo. Pastoral Prayer and Affirmations

Eucharistic Intentions and Intercessions Rev Dr Anne Atwell We celebrate this Eucharist to the glory of God and with special intentions for the Sunshine Cathedral Global Fellowship and local congregation. We pray for all seekers of Truth, may they discover an Abiding Peace. We pray for all who govern that they may work tirelessly for justice, peace, and goodwill. We pray for any who might be hurting and we give thanks for grace equal to every need.

Communion Song

Let There Be Peace on Earth

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me; let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be, with God our creator, family all are we. Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony.

We pray for those who grieve; may they be comforted. We bless the memories of our (+) dearly departed, and we allow ourselves to be blessed by those memories. We affirm blessings for all who are on our prayer list and all who are on our hearts. And with people all over the world we pray,

Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now. With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow: to take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally, let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.

May peace prevail on earth!

Prayer of Thanksgiving

These prayers we offer in the names of all helpers of humanity, and in the spirit of Jesus, son of Mary, as we continue to pray as Jesus taught us:

Silent Helpers Prayer Ministry

DECEMBER IS HIV/AIDS AWARENESS MONTH – This prayer was shared on World AIDS Day, and is offered again on the last day of HIV/AIDS Awareness Month:

WE PRAY FOR THE FOLLOWING...

World AIDS Day Prayer by Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins

We pray for: Morgan G.; Lewis family; MS; Mikayla; Logan & family; GLB; Wilfredo; Byron Y.; WL; Beth L.; Jeff R.; TL; Sharon; those who are incarcerated; Anita; Christie; Norma & Jean;

Life, Meaning, Hope, Connection, Love: The poetry of religion names you "God." Our hearts are so bound to you that names are not needed. We are part of you. We are your home. You are ours. Today, we remember losses to AIDS.

Winsome M.; Kevin & Kelli; Vicky; John; any who struggle during the holidays; Laura; Katy; Phyllis; Margie; Becky; Glenn; Martin; Crystal; Colleen; Courtney; Jamie; Wendy; Davila; SD & KW; Lenae; CH; James M.; an underground lgbtq church in Kenya; all who suffer from war, oppression, bigotry, or dis-ease;

We remember the terror of not knowing where it came from or who it might strike next. We remember the silent but deafening question: will I be next?

Millie Y.; Laura; Tadd; Barb; Carlos C.; Wolf family; Joe B.; Dee; Al; Nancy S.;

We remember the desperate and often ineffective prayer: please, save this one.

Troy & Phillip; Don E.; those in nursing care and assisted living facilities; LGBTQ+ communities; Global Justice Institute; DSFI; INTA; the ministries of Sunshine Cathedral; members & friends of Sunshine Cathedral; all who are part of the Sunshine Cathedral Global Fellowship

We remember the churches' silence, or worse, their cruel condemnation. We remember the courage and kindness, the fierceness and fabulousness that our community demonstrated day after day.

LET US PRAY...

We remember funerals, families that cared and those that didn't, people who died in a loving embrace and those who died alone.

Our hearts embrace all who have been entrusted to our prayers.

We remember.

We affirm each person’s right to peace, happiness, and connection.

We remember new meds.

We wish every person good health, fulfillment, and abundant living.

We remember people learning they could live. We remember the dawn of medical miracles.

We believe miracles occur, and we call them forth for each of these dear ones.

Today, we remember. We bless and are blessed by our memories.

We give thanks for the ability to touch these lives through prayer.

And our memories give us hope. We're here! Can you imagine? We're here. The fallen live in us. Others will have safe, long lives because of us. By chance and grace and fairy dust: we're here.

Amen. REMEMBER

And so Life, Hope, Love, Goddess, God: we'll keep living, and loving, and hoping, and remembering. May we do so until the cure is found, and long after.

Prayers can be submitted via SunshineCathedral.org or by emailing any SC clergyperson. You can hear a prayer at anytime by calling 954.462.2004 (press 6).

Amen.

Christmastide is a short season lasting only 12 days. In our commercial culture we act as if Christmastide is a shopping season that lasts about 60 days and ends with Christmas dinner. But religiously, Christmastide is only 12 days that BEGIN on December 25th and conclude on January 5, the day before Epiphany. Because Epiphany falls on a Saturday this year, we’ll observe it on the 7th (next week).

The 12 Days of Christmas is literally the liturgically correct way to observe Christmas (though, of course, we can celebrate in a variety of ways and anything that generates love and joy is just right). So, if shopping, mailing cards, making calls, making dinner, traveling, or even sadness from missing people who are far away or departed left you a little depleted by Christmas Day, the good news is Christmas ain’t over, and this quieter, less commercial time of the season can be spent in reflection and recovering from the frenetic activities of pre-Christmas and Christmas Day.

It's still Christmas, and I hope the blessings of the season, including the reminder that divine love is with and within us, will bring you many smiles in the days to come. A PRAYER FOR 2024 by Rev. Dr. Durrell Watkins (Put this prayer where you will see it every day and use it throughout 2024) Right now, I am tapping into the universal life force. I wish for all who are suffering to find relief and hope. I deny fear any power over me. I will be a bright light in the world. I am serene and confident and full of joy. I expect blessings. Nothing is too good for me. May we all be strong and wise and loving. May Love heal our world. Let there be peace. Amen.

GLOBAL FELLOWSHIP – Those who don’t live locally but who wish to be part of the Sunshine Cathedral community can learn about the Sunshine Cathedral Global Fellowship by visiting SunshineCathedral.org

HAPPY NEW YEAR – May your New Year’s Eve be safe. May your pets feel safe and loved despite the noise of celebration. If you celebrate, please do so responsibly and stay safe. And may 2024 be filled with joyful surprises, achieved goals, wonderful opportunities, and lots of love. And please share your joys, your sorrows, your hopes, and your presence with us at Sunshine Cathedral throughout the year.

YEAR END GIVING – Today is the last day in 2023 and the last day to impact the financial picture of 2023. Your most generous gifts today can help us start 2024 healthy and strong. And please continue your support throughout 2024. May God bless every gift and every giver. Amen.

SAINTS OF THE WEEK January 1: Holy Name of Jesus — Perhaps as a counterbalance to the ancient pagan festivities around the New Year, the Church came to associate January 1st with the naming of Jesus at his circumcision (Luke 2:21).

WHAT YOUR GIFTS DO – Did you know that Between The Queer God Squad (Youtube, Facebook), Midday Prayer Monday – Saturday (Facebook), and our Sunday morning broadcast (Roku, Youtube, Facebook, Amazon Fire, Google TV, and Apple TV), our streaming ministries got about 10 million views in 2023!

January 3: St. Genevieve (c. 419 – 502) – Patron saint of Paris (in the musical Camelot, Guinevere sings a prayer to St. Genevieve). Her prayers are thought to have saved Paris from invading Huns, and on another occasion when the city was besieged, her diplomatic efforts are thought to have benefitted the city. Genevieve was a nun known for her charitable work.

Did you know that Sunshine Cathedral and the Sunshine Cathedral Foundation in partnership with FLITE, Our Fund Foundation, and SunServe have opened the Sunshine Pride House, a safe landing spot for LGBTQ young people?

Takashi Nagai (1908-1951) — Mystic of Nagasaki. Nagai witnessed the atomic blast over his city. His wife’s charred remains were found in the Catholic cathedral, rosary clasped in her hands. As a physician he worked tirelessly for the survivors. When the radiation left him an invalid he became a contemplative, devoting himself to a life of prayer.

Did you know that we actively partner with 40 organizations? Did you know that we fed just under 40,000 people in 2023. Did you know that thousands of people each week utilize our campus. And did you know the Sunshine Cathedral Center for the Performing Arts has become a world class arts venue and it happens without taking anything from the church budget but it does provide needed income for the church?

Jan. 4: Angela of Foligno is a 13th-century Italian mystic who had a female companion and had visions of God and Christ as mother. After her husband and children died, her “constant and intimate companion” for the rest of her life was a woman named Masazuola.

All of this and more is made possible by your time, talent, treasure, and testimony. Your support of Sunshine Cathedral helps Sunshine Cathedral be a major source of encouragement and comfort to people in our community and far beyond.

January 5: Lanza del Vasto (1901-1981) — Founder of the Community of the Ark and Catholic follower of Gandhi. January 6: The Magi — “Epiphany” is the day traditionally associated with the arrival of the Magi to visit the child Jesus. Some Queer religious leaders suggest that the Magi may have been eunuchs — a sexual minority that would have included people that today would be known as gay, Queer, or transgender. Queer Theologian Virginia Ramey Mollenkott, author of Omnigender, surmised: “My guess is that [the Magi] were people who today would be termed transwomen,” (from Mollenkott’s brochure “Gender Identity and Our Faith Communities”).

Thank you for your generous spirit. You are making miracles happen. OUR SUNDAY BROADCAST is made possible by Happening Out Television Network and donors who support our televised ministry. Happening Out is housed at Sunshine Cathedral Square. Happening Out programming can be viewed on YouTube, Facebook, Amazon Fire, Apple TV, Google TV, and Roku.

++++++++

Happy Holidays & Preparing for a Wonderful 2024

LOAVES & FISHES – We ask you to bring non-perishable food items on the first Sunday of each month to help our food sharing ministry continue to address food insecurity in our community. Next Sunday is the first Sunday in January and the first Sunday of 2024. Thank you for helping our neighbors live more secure lives.

THE WISDOM OF BISHOP STEVEN CHARLESTON A pair of kindly eyes are watching over you. Eyes like a grandmother has. Deep and still. Looking out from the creased lines of an honest face, weathered by a thousand suns, patience embodied in compassion. These eyes have been watching you since before you were born. They will keep their vigil until one day, when your soul opens its own eyes, and starts watching too -- another angel keeping watch over those in need of love.

THE WORD by Jim Rigby

Duo Formosa Catherine Lan, Concert Pianist Huifang Chen, Violinist Saturday, 6 January - 8PM

Much of the Christian church fell into a deep tar pit when it came to believe that scripture itself is the Word of God. As John says in his prologue, the ‘Word” or “Logos” is the principle by which all things come into being. So, the Word is more like our DNA than our acquired religion. The Word is more like the harmonies of music and art than a bible verse memorized without questioning. The Word is more like the living principles of justice than any cadaverous moral code exhumed from the cold crypt of biblical teachings. The Word is the truth beyond our beliefs, the goodness beyond our rules, and the beauty beyond our rituals. Scripture can give witness to the Word but only love can hear the “Word” that is alive and singing everywhere within and around us.

CONTINUED CONCERN FOR UGANDAN LGBTQ+ PEOPLE by Rev Dr Durrell Watkins I remind us again about Uganda’s anti-gay law, one of the harshest laws of its kind in the world. Being identified as LGBTQ can result in prison or even execution. Renting to gay couples can be punished with 7 years imprisonment. Even failing to report same-sex activity is a crime. The government insists that homosexuality is not innate, but is chosen and that choice should be punished. This attitude is in defiance of the findings psychological, sociological, educational, and medical research going back decades. Sexual orientation is not chosen, and it can’t be changed by harsh threats. Christian missionary activity has long promoted homophobic and sexist attitudes in Africa, from the days of European colonization to the present day when western evangelists export a message of homophobia which they claim to be the gospel. What can we do? We can continue to lift our voices to proclaim a spirituality that is based on love, that is more about improving this world than getting to another one, that affirms God’s heart is big enough to include us all. Such a spiritual outlook would never criminalize people for merely existing. We can also support Sunshine Cathedral’s online programming which can be seen worldwide. Let us continue to hold the high watch, and may God bless our every effort to bring hope and healing to a hurting world. Amen. EACH DAY OF CHRISTMAS HAS A SPIRITUAL HERO ATTACHED TO IT - The saints assigned to each day of Christmastide are honored because of their special connection with Christ. December 25 – Birth of Jesus. First Day. December 26 – We remember Stephen, one of the first 7 deacons and the first Christian martyr. Second Day. December 27 – We remember the Apostle John (Jesus’ Beloved Disciple). Third Day. December 28 – “Holy Innocents.” Traditionally we would remember the children Herod had killed. Historians and many bible scholars now doubt that it happened at all; nevertheless, this day is as fine a day as any to honor OUR innate innocence and goodness. Fourth Day. December 29 – We remember Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, who was murdered in his cathedral by the soldiers of Henry II in 1170. Fifth Day. December 30 – We contemplate the Holy Family (Jesus, Mary, and Joseph). Veneration of the Holy Family goes back to the 16th century. Sixth Day. December 31 - We remember St. Sylvester, pope from 314 to 335. During this period the Nicene Creed was formulated. Seventh Day. January 1 – We reflect on St. Mary. Mary has always been honored in Christian traditions for being the mother of Jesus, for supporting his ministry until the very end, and for even being a primary leader after his execution. Eighth Day. January 2 – We remember St. Francis of Assisi, who ministered to the poor and sick, loved animals, had a vision of the Trinity as being female, and also had a vision of the Infant Jesus. He embraced a gender non-conforming initiate, “Brother Jacoba” (assigned female at birth). Ninth Day. January 3 - We reflect on the name of Jesus. “Jesus” is an English translation of a Latin rendering of a Greek transliteration of an Aramaic name (Yeshua), so “Jesus” wasn’t actually Jesus’ name. Still, it is how most of us know him and in antiquity, one’s name represented one’s nature (which is why after transformative events, people would sometimes change their names). So, to focus on the name of Jesus is to focus on the nature of Jesus, the anointed, awakened, healing, liberating, prophet of justice-love. Tenth Day. January 4 – We remember St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, who founded the first U.S. order of religious sisters, the Sisters of Charity. She was the first U.S. born person canonized by the Catholic Church. (Declaration of Independence issued two years after she was born.) Eleventh Day. January 5 – This is the day before Epiphany and the last day of Christmas. We remember John Neumann, the first male U.S. citizen to be canonized in the Catholic church. He immigrated to the U.S. from Europe, was ordained in the U.S. and became Bishop of Philadelphia. Twelfth Day. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
