FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT SISD’s Community Report is our annual statement of transparency and accountability to you, our community. We’ve been bringing you this report since 2015 and we’ve always filled it with data and information that reflects the previous year’s growth. Community-based accountability encompasses so much more than only a letter rating — which is determined by a oneday test. In this report, you will find a true reflection of what our students and teachers have accomplished in the last year in addition to their performance on STAAR. Likewise, you will see areas in which our district needs to grow. In Texas, school districts who utilize the Community Accountability system in addition to the state-mandated evaluation system, are evaluated based on seven “pillars”. These pillars are: 1) Teaching and Learning 2) Student Readiness 3) Engaged and Well-Rounded Students 4) Staff Quality and Professional Learning 5) Community Engagement 6) Safety and Wellness and 7) Fiscal and Operational Systems. This report is organized according to these pillars. A group of parents, teachers, administrators and community members helped to formulate key questions that drive the progress in each pillar. We hope you will gain key information from each pillar as you read our annual report. Looking ahead to 2022-2023, SISD will be focused on Math instruction. With a new curriculum, many hours of teacher training and two new Math instructional coaches, our students are poised for success. Security is always a key initiative for SISD. The work we began in 2018 with the Safety and Security Task Force will continue this year. Additionally, we continue to formulate plans for methods to recruit and retain outstanding teachers for our students. We’ve always felt that our strongest allies in the education of our students is you, our community. We hope you’ll enjoy this edition of the SISD Community Report. Raiders Rise!

Why is it important for students to set and keep track of goals? It helps to motivate the students to want to increase their score/level especially since they are making a prediction on what they think it will be. For multiplication facts it gives them the satisfaction of knowing they have mastered a certain number. It is clearly motivation for themselves.

What was the overall goal/purpose of creating the goal-setting program? How did you implement the project? The overall goal was for the students to be aware of their own progress and goals and learning/deciding what they can do to help them meet their goals. I met with team leaders over the summer and we felt very passionately about students owning their data. We wanted to start small this first year so we went with MAP data (Measure of Academic Progress), our HMH Level (our district’s adopted reading curriculum), and multiplication facts. How did students respond to this program? They enjoyed recording their progress and were proud of their own learning. They were happy to see their progress. Like all “new” things, some classes embraced it more than others but I expect even more buy-in this year as students were excited about their progress. How did scores improve? Many of our student scores increased because they were intrinsically motivated and they wanted to see the level go up and their bar graph increase. Is there anything else you’d like to add? I look forward to adding to this goal this year. I have lots of ideas... stay tuned! I want students to own their learning and be proud of their accomplishments! STUDENT LEARNING PILLAR 1 | AND PROGRESS READING WITH ROSIE Rosey is a Certified Therapy Pet through Love On A Leash®, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization. In addition to being a therapy pet, she and her handler, Mindy Pease, have gone through additional therapy training through Intermountain Therapy Animals where she achieved certification as a Reading Education Assistance Dogs© (R.E.A.D©) Sunnyvale ISD has an RTI (Response to Intervention) Program and included in this program is reading assistance. The “Reading with Rosey” Program was created in 2017 at the SES campus. On DID YOU average, Rosey is at the KNOW? elementary campus SISD students met their goal two days a week and of reading a million pages during reads with four to five children each of these 2021-2022 in the #RRAMM Raiders days. SIX ESL (ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE) STUDENTS EXITED PROGRAM IN 2022 SES teachers who are certified in ESL helped English Language Learners achieve the top-scoring rank of Advanced High on their state-mandated assessments (TELPAS). Thanks to the teachers’ use of strategies and tools to support students’ growth in reading, listening, speaking and writing in Pre-K to first grade, these students are now Proficient English Speakers not only in every day language, but with academic language, as well.

SISD is investing in our Raiders’ growth in Math. With a new curriculum from Eureka Math (K-5) and Carnegie Math for 6th grade - High School Algebra I, II and Geometry), Math will be a focus for 202223. Most notably, teachers will benefit from two Math instructional coaches who Paige Wester have joined the Professional Learning Staff. Paige Wester will coach SES and SIS teachers and Miranda Thompson will coach SMS and SHS teachers, helping them with math strategies in the classroom.

As a district, we continue to evaluate the effects of the pandemic on the academic progress of our students. The most evident effect is on growth and progress in math, as math requires time on task to practice the concepts that are taught. A review of data from this past year shows that students are performing at typical levels in areas such as geometry, data analysis, and measurement. However, Dr. Christi Morgan performance levels indicate that students would benefit from more focused, conceptually-based instruction to support their growth in complex concepts, such as numerical and algebraic relationships and probability. We will be transitioning to the use of Eureka Math in K-5th grade and Carnegie Math in 6th grade-Geometry, which includes new materials, teacher training, and coaching from our two instructional coaches. EKG (Electrocardiogram) Practicum and Clinical Studies, Class of 2022 What were the most important lessons you learned from being in your practicum? I learned essential healthcare skills that I can use at home to help my grandmother and in my future job. I learned how to communicate effectively, spread my workload to alleviate stress, and learned my material correctly. How did being a part of this practicum prepare you for college or life after high school? Since I am trying to enter nursing school after two years of studying and prep at Texas A&M - Commerce, doing the EKG course and clinical studies allowed me to see what I would be doing in the future. It let me know what I would be getting myself into. What other certifications did you obtain at SHS? How do you feel these certifications will prepare you for your future? I received my EKG certification, HIPPA, BLS CPR & AED, and previous OSHA industrial and healthcare certifications. Obtaining these certifications gave me the confidence to step in and help someone if need be. Were you a member of any Career and Technical Student Organization? How did this organization benefit you during high school and how will it prepare you for your future? I was a member of HOSA, but I was also busy with other extracurriculars like debate, band, and football. Is there anything else you would like to add? I want to thank my teachers for putting up with me and and to all the great people in Sunnyvale for making everything possible. And a special thanks to Coach C. and Mrs. Tunnell for inspiring me, instilling the courage to become a nurse, and maybe even something beyond that. SMS CAREER PATHWAYS COURSE SMS students are required to take the Career Pathways course that follows the following units of study - Envisioning Success, Post Secondary Options, Programs of Study/Career Clusters, Community, Finances and Job Searching. 7th Grade: Being Involved at SMS What activities do you participate in at SMS? I play football, basketball, and run track. I play baritone saxophone in the SMS Blue Band. I am also in National Junior Honor Society and Destination Imagination. What activities are you involved in outside of school? I play 7 on 7 football, and I am involved in my church youth group. What volunteer work are you currently involved in? I often help my teachers like Mrs. Coats and Mr. Novak clean or organize in the summer or before and after school. I helped with the warm clothing drive at SMS and various projects through NJHS. How do you balance your busy schedule? I always make sure that I plan to be early to anything I have to do. I follow a daily routine, so I have plenty of time scheduled for school, sports, homework, and free time. How do you keep your grades up? I think the most important things that I do are listen and actively participate in class. I set high expectations for myself and work hard to meet them. The Campus Culture Team is comprised of student representatives from Student Council (Raider Nation at SMS) and the Superintendent’s Crew. The team meets once per quarter in the library at SHS and in the calming room at SMS. The groups are supervised by Mrs. James, the campus principal, the campus counselor and

Director of Special Programs Erica Lawless. It’s important to note that the ideas from the team are student-driven. “The Campus Culture Teams have been able to share their voices on topics of culture, discipline, kindness and have share ideas on how to encourage their peers on how to respect and appreciate others’ differences,” James said. “They have introduced a ‘Kindness Club’, and future ideas include hanging up flags from countries of origin, scheduling coffee with the principal and inviting speakers to campus.” Pillar 3: Engaged and Well-Rounded Students | 13

TEXAS READING ACADEMY All SIS teachers (grades 3-5 - including principals, special education teachers, Science, Social Studies and Math teachers) have completed and passed all requirements for the Texas Reading Academy. This is an intense, 11-month course which is required for all Texas teachers and principals, grades K-3. However, SISD required all teachers and principals in Pre-K-5th grade and K-12 Special Education teachers. Participants must complete the following and meet passing expectations: 60 hours of in-person learning, pass three artifacts that were Canvas-graded (Canvas is an online system) and two artifacts that were graded by two TEA-moderated graders. They have to completed four observations and coaching sessions with Kristen Nester, SISD’s Texas Reading Academy Cohort Leader. Additionally, they must complete pre-tests and post-tests for each of the 12 modules in the academy.

SUPPORTING TEACHERS IN THEIR PROFESSIONAL GOALS iLearn is SISD’s Professional Development Framework, coordinated by Director of Professional Learning Jennifer Settle. Teachers utilize iLearn to set professional goals, attend trainings and professional development opportunities (inside and outside of SISD) and then log hours within the online system. Weekly e-mails are sent to all teachers to provide updates, reminders, motivation, praise and professional development opportunities. RECRUITING THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST FOR SISD’S TEAM In order to fully understand SISD’s recruitment and staff retention needs, SISD established a Recruitment and Retention Team to support the Staff Quality and Recruitment goals of our Strategic Plan. The team is made up of a group of teachers, students, administrators and community members and follows the tradition of SISD’s special project team model of seeking community input for important goals. “Attracting and retaining a talented faculty and staff is one of our most important priorities,” Superintendent Doug Williams said. “It’s vital that our district seek community input in this important endeavor.”

Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS)

After a team of SISD teachers evaluated teacher appraisal systems, they selected the T-TESS system. The Board of Trustees approved the system and it was implemented throughout the district during 2021-2022. T-TESS is a system designed by educators to support teachers in their professional growth. “Our goal was to Increase the intentionality in focusing on instruction in our classrooms,” Dr. Christi Morgan said. “As

a result, our principals have spent more time in classrooms and spent more time coaching teachers.” SISD principals received specialized training for how to implement the teacher appraisal system. In the first year of implementing the new teacher appraisal system, 67% of our teachers feel that they have had more instructionallyfocused conversations with their campus administrators as a result of T-TESS implementation.

BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS IN THE CLASSROOM Creating a safe and comfortable atmosphere is important for all teachers, especially SISD’s. One of the best ways to encourage classroom dialogue, create a positive classroom climate and strengthen students’ social skills is to implement restorative practices. Restorative practices offer schools a way to help students develop the very real-life need for conflict-resolution skills and self-regulation techniques. SISD teachers have been trained in these practices and have implemented them in their classrooms. “Helping teachers build capacity to handle behavior issues before they escalate is a priority for SISD,” Assistant Superintendent Dr. Christi Morgan said. “This helps limit time outside the classroom for our students so they can focus on what’s important - learning academically and growing socially and emotionally.” Teachers use a variety of tools and techniques to help restore their classrooms. Students can use calming tools to self-regulate. A teacher may implement a restorative circle in the classroom in order to help facilitate empathy and trust among classmates. A student may also wish to visit the campus’ Calming Room in order to take a break, a breath and then move on.

SISD OBTAINS GRANT TO SUPPORT INSTRUCTION

The Texas COVID Learning Acceleration Supports (TCLAS) was granted to Sunnyvale ISD in order to support instruction following COVID-19.
