The Susquehanna Valley Quilt Guild
The Susquehanna Valley Quilt Guild will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, August 28th at 6:30 PM at the Pennsdale United Methodist Church, 658 Village Rd Pennsdale PA. Guest speaker joining us- in person-will be Betty Neff of Canton PA. Betty’s life was always focused on teaching, lecturing, designing and publishing her own pattern lines. For our meeting, she’ll be sharing original works, including
pieces that have never been displayed publicly. Betty’s presentation will take us on a visual journey through her evolution as a quilter, from the early days of cardboard templates to today’s computer-generated patterns. Through fabric, color and innovative techniques, she’ll show us how quilting continues to inspire her current life. Join us for what promises to be an unforgettable evening celebrating the artistry and pas-
sion of one of quilting’s most dedicated creators!
Then on Saturday, August 30, Jenn Shaffer, one of our members, is offering a workshop on “Kaleidoscope One Block Wonder”. We are still looking for more people to learn this technique and there is still time to sign up.
As always, please visit our web site at www.susqvalleyquilters.org for more information and future programs.

Penn College students to serve, learn at World Series
WILLIAMSPORT,
Pa. –
Among the huge assembly required to welcome 20 teams and around 300,000 fans to the Little League Baseball World Series in South Williamsport are Pennsylvania College of Technology students and staff.
Baking and culinary students and staff from the college’s Le Jeune Chef Restaurant are set to prepare meals for the competing teams, while paramedic students will help provide for the emergency medical needs of the thousands of spectators who attend each of the nationally televised series’ 38 games.
The interns, their hometowns and their majors are Ekaterina T. Arnold, of Mount Union (culinary arts technology); Ally A. Colon, of Philadelphia (baking & pastry arts and applied management); Jaylynn F. Lewis Dickson, of Philadelphia (baking & pastry arts and applied management); Steven R. Penley, of Chambersburg (baking & pastry arts); and Aj R. Velez Jr., of McAdoo (baking & pastry arts).
The international event exposes the students to diversity in health care and to the time, preparation and interagency cooperation required to provide care at a large-scale event.
For the fifth year, Le Jeune Chef Restaurant, a live-learning lab for the college’s baking and culinary program, will provide three meals a day in the Dr. Creighton J. Hale International Grove at the Little League International complex, where teams are housed during the series. They will begin on Aug. 8, when the first teams arrive. When all teams are present, they will serve 400 people per meal period –1,200 meals per day.
Last year, the teams consumed over 900 pounds of bacon, 155 gallons of chocolate milk, 400 pounds of whole bananas, 45 gallons of ketchup, 760 pounds of scrambled eggs, 1,100 pounds of various french fries, more than 1,700 ice cream cups and over 4,500 feet of Fruit by the Foot.
The Penn College team will do most breakfast and lunch preparation at the Grove, with dinner being prepped at Le Jeune Chef and transported to the complex. The culinary crew consists of five student interns, the restaurant’s professional staff, baking and culinary faculty, and other students who will help once Fall 2025 classes start on Aug. 18.
Graphic design student Benny M. Hornberg, of Pittsburgh, designed Le Jeune Chef trading pins for the culinarians to share with the participating teams. (No additional pins are available.)
Nine students in the college’s paramedic program will be part of the health care team.
The paramedic students work under the guidance of certified paramedics from Susquehanna Regional Emergency Medical Services and UPMC Emergency Medicine physicians, who are on hand in the stadiums to provide for the emergency health needs of spectators.
Helping to cover the series is an optional field-service learning exercise for the students as part of their Cardiology & Medicine course. In total, the nine students are scheduled for 194 hours. During their shifts in 2024, Penn College paramedic students saw 68 patients.
The paramedic students and their hometowns are Allen Bennett, of Montgomery; Myron Bingaman, of Mifflinburg; Gabriel Bittner, of Danville; Logan Deats, of Dallas; Alicia R. Freeman, of Ulysses; Colleen Haas, of South Williamsport; Christopher Kavcic, of Williamsport; Tiffani McNeill, of Watsontown; and Darlene Tobey, of Wellsboro.
When they are not at the World Series, the paramedic students gain additional hands-on experience providing care on various local advanced life support ambulances.
Meesh Tarsa, a member of the waitstaff at Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Le Jeune Chef Restaurant, serves a team at the Little League International Complex during the 2024 Little League Baseball World Series. This year, students and Le Jeune Chef staff plan to again serve 1,200 meals a day to the participating teams. Penn College paramedic students will also be at the complex to help meet spectators’ emergency medical needs. (Photo Credit: Little League International)

For the safety of residents and property, the Township is required to provide fire protection and emergency medical services. On the fire side, we are service by four different fire companies: Hughesville, Lairdsville, Muncy Valley, and Picture Rocks. All four have EMS, but due to lack of avail-
able volunteers, training requirements, equipment, etc, some fire companies are consolidating services. At our meeting, we will discuss this, along with our options for providing EMS.

Service 1st Federal Credit Union Assists in Hosting Financial Reality Fairs for Pennsylvania Students
(Danville, PA) –Throughout July, Service 1st Federal Credit Union partnered with the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education and PALCO Federal Credit Union to host five financial reality fairs at Lycoming College and Penn College for Pennsylvania students.
“Service 1st was excited to be approached by the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education to be a part of the programming for PA Free Enterprise
Week,” said Ben McDuffee, Assistant Vice President of the Muncy Office, Service 1st. “We knew it would be a huge undertaking, assembling volunteers from so many different organizations. I was blown away by the support we got in offering this Financial Reality Fair to the students at PFEW. We had over 130 different volunteers, many coming back over the course of multiple weeks.”
The financial reality fairs, held on July 2, 9, 23, 30, and
31, allowed students to choose a career and receive a starting salary before challenging them to make decisions on essential and non-essential items such as clothing, housing, transportation, entertainment, and more. After simulating a real-life financial scenario, students concluded the event by meeting with a financial advisor to review their budget. With the support of 130+ volunteers representing various businesses and organizations
across the state, the financial reality fairs provided a mock budgeting experience to 1,900 Pennsylvania students.
“Service 1st has always embraced our core value of supporting our community through our local schools. We know that financial education and real-world application is something young people sorely need before they are sent into the real world. We hope that this experience helps equip them to make those smart financial decisions,”
added McDuffee.
“Service 1st conducts Financial Reality Fairs throughout the school year in many of the school districts in our market footprint. This five-week adventure was by far the largest fair we’ve ever been a part of. We look forward to being a part of the programming at PA Free Enterprise Week in the future!” For more information regarding organizing a Financial Reality Fair, call our Contact Center at 800.562.6049, or visit www.service1.org.

– A team of Pennsylvania College of Technology students recently completed the U.S. Department of Energy’s BuildingsNEXT challenge – and simultaneously provided the City of Williamsport a picture of what a net-zero energy youth facility in the city could look like.
The BuildingsNEXT Student Design Competition – formerly the Solar Decathlon – encourages college students to design high-performance buildings that improve quality of life through great affordability, resiliency and energy efficiency.
Students were encouraged to choose a project that could bring positive change to their communities. In the past, Penn College teams have completed design projects for local groups like Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity and Family Promise of Lycoming County.
“This year, we reached out to Mayor Derek Slaughter and asked: ‘Is there something that the city would like some input on – something the students could help you visualize?’” explained Dorothy J. Gerring, associate professor of architecture and the team’s adviser. Gerring is also the architecture department head.
The students’ collaboration with the city resulted in a design for a Boys &
Girls Clubs of America facility meant to serve as an after-school, weekend and summer camp for school-age children. Their design includes a gymnasium, walking track, locker rooms, kitchen/cafeteria, education space, quiet learning area, gamers lounge and recording studio, as well as a pollinator garden.
The students’ design was based on Boys & Girls Clubs of America standards and information in the city’s Park Avenue Plan.
The students began working on the facility design in October – when the competition was still formatted as the “Solar Decathlon” – and met with Slaughter throughout the process.
“This project is a testament to the students’ dedication, creativity and vision,” the mayor said. “Their design aligns with our city’s commitment to creating sustainable, safe and inspiring spaces where young people can grow, thrive and lead.”
In May, the students joined 18 other collegiate teams in the Open Commercial Division to present their plans to a panel of industry experts. While originally a 10-part competition with semifinals and finals, the event transitioned in early 2025 to a “showcase” for any team that chose to present.
“This project would be Williamsport’s first net-zero building,” said Kayla A. Weinzierl, a Bachelor of Architecture student from Summerhill. “It is designed with the health, safety and the community at its core.”
In a net-zero energy building, 100% of energy demand is met by on-site renewable energy.
To achieve net zero, the students’ plans call for solar panels on the roof. A tight building envelope helps minimize energy demand from its heating, ventilation and air conditioning system.
The students chose a vertical geothermal heating system. Their design takes advantage of daylighting from the sun. On the building’s east and west sides, vertical louvres on the windows help to minimize glare and solar heat gain, while a green wall system – an exterior wall covered in plants – provides extra insulation and is a natural air filter. Horizontal window shading on the south side minimizes solar heat gain in summer and maximizes it in winter.
Their design also incorporates kinetic energy technology in fitness equipment and under the gymnasium floor. The technology uses movement to generate electricity.
The students selected building materials and
furnishings that are Pennsylvania sourced and low in volatile organic compounds. The building’s structural system uses mass timber – a renewable resource that can be sourced locally and is a low-carbon alternative to concrete or steel. Pervious concrete also helps to reduce the facility’s impact.
The seven-member team was made up of architecture students Jordan K. Ace, of Franklin; Jazira Baez Mercedes, of Pittsburgh; Ciara E. Fey, of Hegins; Sandra M. Gallick, of Linden; and Kayla A. Weinzierl, of Summerhill. All but Gallick were second-year students. Gallick completed a Bachelor of Science in architecture & sustainable design in May. Baez Mercedes graduated in May with an associate degree in architecture. Ace, Fey and Weinzierl are pursuing Bachelor of Architecture degrees.
Team member Lindsay N. Repman, of Williamsport, is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in business administration; and John P. McAnally Jr., of Coopersburg, is seeking a Bachelor of Science in heating, ventilation & air conditioning engineering technology. Both are thirdyear students.
“They had a great experience working in an interdisciplinary team,” Gerring said. “They were challenged to really step up because a lot of the things were very new to them.”
The project allowed them to broaden their experience by working with electrical and structural engineers, as well as the city and Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and by diving deeper into topics like costing and marketing.
“The students were tenacious,” Gerring said.

Its iconic role in our nation’s history and its accessible location in one of the most scenic areas in the center of the Commonwealth lends itself to unlimited opportunities for the film and television arts,” said Yasui. He added one of the SFF’s aims is to encourage audiences to rediscover the unique experience of viewing films in a cinema.
An awards ceremony open to the public will conclude the festival on Sunday, September 21 at 7pm at The District Cinema at Lycoming Valley. Award categories include Best Student Film, Best Pennsylvania-Made Film, Best Documentary, Best Short Film, Best Drama, Best Horror, Best Comedy, and Best Animation. A panel of independent judges will evaluate the submissions to determine winners.
