The Williamsport Home has been recognized as a Best Nursing Home for 2024 by U.S. News & World Report, and is one of only 74 facilities in Pennsylvania to earn this recognition out of 672 rated facilities.

A Continuing Care Retirement Community located in Loyalsock Township, The Williamsport Home earned the rating of “High Performing,” the highest possible rating, for both Short-Term Rehabilitation and Long-Term Care. U.S. News gives the recognition of Best Nursing Home only to those that satisfy their assessment of consistent performance in quality measures.

“At The Williamsport Home, ensuring our residents receive the highest level of quality care is our number one priority, and we are truly honored that U.S. News & World Report has recognized us for this,” said The Williamsport Home Administrator Jennifer Cisneros. “This recognition would not have been possible without the hard work and effort put forth by our caring, compassionate and dedicated staff every single day.”

In addition to its rehabilitation and skilled nursing care facilities, The Williamsport Home offers a Personal Care unit and Independent Living Apartments for seniors who want wor-

ry-free living with all the comforts of home. Amenities such as a Wellness Center with on-staff personal trainer, planned social activities, and field trips are offered to keep residents healthy, active and engaged. For more information

YMCA programs keep older adults active

The River Valley Regional YMCA isn’t just for the young, it’s also for the young at heart. All 6 locations offer ways for older adults to lead healthier, more productive lifestyles through safe and effective physical movement, along with social opportunities.

Through Silver Sneakers, Boomer Fit, aquatic Arthritis Classes, and more, the Y offers a place for seniors to be active and make friends. These classes focus on low impact movements helping with balance, range of movement, and increasing strength. Classes in the pool offer the added benefit of exercise without impacting joints.

“I have arthritis. My therapist said if I don’t come here I would end up in a wheelchair,” explained Judy Balzer, Arthritis Class participant. “In the water I am able to walk like normal.”

“We feel blessed for our health. I still swim laps after class,” said Mary Kyler, who’s 92. “I’ve been a member of the Williamsport YMCA for over 8 years. I enjoy the Arthritis Class and senior socials.”

The YMCA helps older adults with memberships by partnering with insurance programs that offer discounts, reimbursements, or even free memberships to their subscribers. A Healthy Senior Program is available at some locations for those without an insurance wellness benefit, who need financial assistance.

Thirty-year member Phyllis Shevitski, 90, attends Arthritis Class 3 times a week. “I look forward to seeing my friends, Shevitski said. “The best thing about the Y is the friendship and camaraderie.” Learn more at rvrymca.org or contact the customer service number on your insurance card.

Farming is a major part of Bonnie’s life. But after years of milking cows, and throwing hay bales, the wear and tear took its toll on Bonnie’s hip. “I was doing my daily things, and suddenly, I got this pain in my left leg,” Bonnie says. Bonnie saw Ronald DiSimone, MD, orthopedic surgeon, UPMC Williamsport, for her surgery. The total joint replacement program at UPMC Williamsport offers a complete approach to care, including a total joint replacement class. Same-day joint replacement surgery is even available for those who qualify. UPMC Williamsport also received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Advanced Total Hip and Knee Replacement and the UPMC Health Plan Hip and Knee Joint Replacement Surgery Center of Excellence. “Why would I go to a big city when there’s such a great facility right here, with great specialists just 10 minutes away?” Bonnie says. Now, Bonnie is pain-free. “My life was turned around, and now I can do anything,” she says. Bonnie didn’t choose to need a hip replacement, but she did choose UPMC.

‘Person-centered care’ at heart of Valley View’s beliefs

Dignity, kindness and utmost consideration.

That is what is promised for each resident at Valley View Rehabilitation and Nursing Center located in the rolling hills on the outskirts of Williamsport at 2140 Warrensville Road north of Montoursville.

Whether your needs are for assisted living, licensed personal care or ther-

apy, Valley View is set among picturesque surroundings where residents can experience and commune with nature.

Valley View provides its residents with a high quality of life and encourages them to be independent in their thoughts and actions, giving opportunities for residents to share values and to maintain their beliefs, the

renowned rehab and nursing center embraces the concept of “Person Centered Care.”

It is a home to live and build relationships in, all in an atmosphere of autonomy.

Such care involves family, and adds meaning and joy to the lives of residents, according to staff literature.

For example, the activities provided by Therapeutic Recreation Department are designed to meet the residents’ physical, mental, social and spiritual needs.

Residents here can and do play bingo, attend church services and hold Bible study, are provided with musical entertainment and attend weekly socials.

Small groups may find interest in learning arts and crafts, hearing about the latest current events, reminiscing with others and taking part in senior fitness programs with the Therapeutic Recreation staff.

The facility offers physical therapy, occupational and speech therapy, and social services.

Among the offerings is the Russell Rehab short-term therapy, and the Sunrise Terrace, for dementia care.

On specially arranged days, vans

are available to take residents on daytrips to shop at local stores, attend the Lycoming County Fair, fish, or watch a play or performance at the Community Arts Center. During the seasonal changes, residents take rides to see the fall foliage and tours of the Christmas and holiday lights.

The center features space for residents to read books, listen to music, watch movies and work on puzzles. It has an enclosed courtyard.

The facility has hospice and palliative care services and living areas that include Woods’ Edge, which borders the Loyalsock Creek.

When it comes to residents’ dining and the culinary experiences, the facility offers several locations in which to dine and special dietary programs offered by staff, such as for those nutritionally challenged or seeking weight-loss.

Among the features at the facility is a Family Gathering Room, which is open to families and friends for special visits.

At Valley View, residents can expect compassionate care and staff with a commitment to quality treatment along with a facility that has impeccable assisted living standards.
