People’s Art
29 June – 1 December 2024
People’s Art is an exhibition that looks at how and why we place value on art. Five artists, Julia Griffiths Jones, Ingrid Murphy, Francisca Onumah, Liaqat Rasul and Zac Weinberg have each been commissioned to create new work in response to five items that can be described as popular art. The exhibition will present five paired artworks. Each pair consisting of the popular art object and the artist’s response.
This exhibition has been created in partnership with Compton
Verney and we are grateful to the private collector Jen Jones for the loan of a traditional quilt.
Join us on 29 and 30 June at our opening weekend celebrations, for the chance to see the exhibition before anyone else, and a host of activities for people of all ages to get involved in. Visit our website for more information.

Seb Trend: XTRALIFE
9 March - 9 June 2024
Central to XTRALIFE is a series of ‘melted photographs’ in artist made frames produced specifically for the exhibition. This marks the first time the photographs have been exhibited together as a solo show and builds on Trend’s ongoing investigations into states of ‘in-between’: molten and solid, representation and abstraction, permanent and momentary.

Fixing Time is a retrospective exhibition across two venues –Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens and Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art – exploring 50 years of work by renowned British artist and photographer Ian Macdonald.
