EASTERN CAPE

ith 40km of golden beaches, the amazing wildlife of the Kragga Kamma Game Park and Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve, the magnificence of the elephants in Addo, the vibes of Stanley Street, Mzansi’s third largest port and Route 67 are more than enough reasons to pack your bags and head off to Gqeberha for a somewhat chilled staycation.

When planning your Eastern Cape escape, we suggest you don’t miss the following hideaways to lay your head down.

Those in the know will recognise this part of South Africa as a world-class safari destination … and Gqeberha is the gateway to the Lalibela Game Reserve – an exceptional safari experience. Just an hour’s drive through rolling green hills from Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport (make sure to stop off en route at the famous Nanaga Farm Stall), Lalibela Game Reserve offers visitors one of the finest game-viewing experiences in the country and luxury accommodations across six unique lodges.

BOOK BOOK

Lalibela is a malaria-free reserve spanning five biomes, a feature that allows for an array of wildlife habitats sustaining a dense population of free-roaming wildlife, including the iconic Big 5 (elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard), cheetah, hippo and giraffe and antelope such as wildebeest, zebra, blesbok, impala and eland. The twice-daily game-viewing experience at Lalibela is unparalleled – it’s normal to see giraffe, elephant, lion, hippo, buffalo and cheetah all in one drive while your highly trained guide drops fascinating facts about the animals and the surrounding area with its rich floral kingdom.

Each of Lalibela’s luxury lodges offers a distinct and unique safari experience. For family friendly fun, Mark’s Camp is the perfect place, while Tree Tops and Inzolo Lodges offer secluded indulgence amid untouched surroundings. Lentaba Lodge’s relaxed and welcoming offering overlooks a bushveld valley while the five-star Kichaka Lodge and Mills Manor both take the safari experience to a new level of sophistication and opulence.

PALATE

The tastes of the Karoo

The Karoo region is known the world over for having the best lamb, so we went in search of the best epicurean spots to savour the best and most “genuine” Karoo lamb dishes around. If you’re in or around Matjiesfontein in the Great Karoo, then a visit to The Lord Milner Dining Room is a must. It serves great Karoo springbok and lamb dishes. Try out their famous lamb pie or their low and slow-cooked lamb shank. A favourite among patrons, says director of food at The Lord Milner Craig Paulse, is the braised rolled lamb shoulder served with Parmesan white polenta, ratatouille vegetables and lamb jus.

If localised farm-to-fork is up your alley, a sojourn to the Yellow House in Prince Albert is recommended.

The meat, veggies and

cheeses are all locally sourced. The best part of this eatery is that it not only serves a mouthwatering feast of lamb shank on mash – a Greek-styled slow-cooked shank, served on root veg mash, with a proper gravy – but also offers the same succulent slow-roasted lamb on its Casablanca pizza. This eatery also offers Karoo farm-style cooking classes.

It’s not on Sewende Laan, but the Oppikoppi Padstal in Leeu-Gamka is a worthwhile stopover for an hour or so en route to Joburg or Cape Town. While you are there, please also step inside the slaghuis, pull up a chair and experience a regte Karoo lamb braai. People rave about the generous proportions and proper grilled Karoo lamb, and because it’s a butchery, buy and freezer pack away some cuts for home cooking.

DID YOU KNOW?

After rooibos, Karoo lamb is only the second product in Mzansi to be registered under the Geographical Indication (GI) regulations. This is what it means: "The protection status conferred by the GI is of immense significance for the future of Karoo lamb. It not only safeguards our heritage, but also paves the way for broader recognition and market potential."

Conservation is key

Preserving South Africa’s marine, lake and river reserves demands a comprehensive strategy focused on conservation and sustainability.

Critical measures include enforcing regulations to combat overfishing and illegal activities in marine areas, monitoring and managing land-based and marine pollution sources and engaging local communities, government entities and conservation organisations in collaborative efforts for responsible tourism.

Strict waste disposal regulations and educational initiatives are essential to mitigate the impact of plastic pollution and cultivate environmental stewardship among the public.

One of the Southern Drakensberg's best kept secrets is the gateway to Sani Pass, the Mkomazana Mountain Cottages. It lies snugly at the foot of the Sani Pass, within a magnificent World Heritage Site. Just 8km from the South African border to Lesotho, Mkomazana exudes old-world charm from its days as a bustling trading post in the 1800’s.

THAILAND

Sadudee Sangnil, director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand for UK, Ireland and South Africa, shares some great nuggets for travel to Thailand

April: Water fun

There’s arguably no other event as synonymous with Thai culture as the Songkran Festival. It centres around water play and is hosted in April annually to celebrate the Thai New Year. During Songkran, people engage in water fights, but there’s also a spiritual component to the festival, with people visiting temples for purification rituals and blessing ceremonies.

June: Hiking highs

Thailand has amazing natural vegetation and towering hills. June is the perfect time to hike the Northern Hills. One of the most popular hikes is up to the summit of Doi Chiang Dao, from where the views stretch all the way to Burma. Hikers can also enjoy guided walks through terraced rice paddies and visit some surrounding villages.

November: Festival fever

The Loy Krathong festival in November is a celebration of lights, water and spirituality. Crafting and floating krathongs – intricately decorated floating baskets – on rivers, lakes and other bodies of water is a traditional festival activity. While celebrated nationwide, some locations, such as Chiang Mai, Sukhothai and Ayutthaya, are renowned for their elaborate festivities.

South Africans don’t need a visa to enter Thailand for up to 30 days for tourism purposes.

Hallelujah Khumalo, 7

Kate-Rose Payne, 11

“Water, water, water – what I love doing most days of the week and over the weekend is going to Bright Water Beach in Simonstown. It's so calming and makes me very happy. I've also made loads of friends there. I like swimming, I get to play in the waves as the tide comes in and goes out. I also like seeing the penguins and dassies. I love seeing the fish through my goggles. An interesting fact, a bunch of fish is called a school of fish."

“The beach – my favourite travel destination is Mauritius. I like it because it brings back special memories about visiting there with my family, going on glass bottom boats, building sandcastles, going to Mini Club Med and the wonderful people. I love swimming in the ocean and reading while relaxing and watching the waves. I mean, who doesn’t love the beach, right?”

BOOK WATCH

Jemma Maneveldt, 9

“Animals for me – I live in Cape Town where I enjoy exploring nature and the outdoors. I love being around animals and water. My favourite spot is the Drakenstein Lion Park where I stayed overnight in a safari tent surrounded by lion enclosures. I saw them being fed raw meat, heard them roar and learnt how they sleep. It was the best!

"My two favourite swimming spots are Newlands swimming baths where there are many green trees that protect us from the sun. The other is Boulders Beach … where I can interact with the penguins while I swim. There is also an amazing trail walk that I always do with my mom and dad.”

“Active spaces – I’m super into sport, so for local destinations, anywhere with a eld big enough to score some goals. My favourite spot in Cape Town is the Green Point Urban Park. Internationally, it must be Dubai’s Motiongate Theme Park, Legoland Dubai, and Yas Island and Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi. There’s so much to do and see. Dubai’s always a vibe.”

What I do when I’m not travelling

Hallelujah Khumalo is not just an avid high- yer, but an author as well. At seven years old, she’s already written and illustrated her very rst book called Where I Fit. The story, told from a unique and authentic child's perspective, is about tting in while celebrating one's individual quirks and differences.

Hallelujah shares that the story is about a little puzzle piece that can't quite gure out where she ts in. “I want other kids to join me and this little puzzle piece and learn with us about the importance of being unique and special and how it takes all of us to create a colourful, beautiful world,” she says. The story speaks about diversity, inclusivity and self-acceptance and the celebration of one's individuality.

Hallelujah, from Johannesburg, South Africa, has been reading since the age of three and a half. She loves books and using her imagination to create wonderful stories where anything is possible. She published her book at the age of six, becomine one of South Africa’s youngest ever authors.

Hallelujah hopes that children who read her book are reminded of how special they are and that they make the world brighter just by being themselves.

– INFECTIOUS, DEEP, EMOTIONAL

1. Cape Town

“Cape Town is a blend of so many cultures, religions and traditions. I grew up in Athlone (area code 7764), an area near the Cape Flats that embraces coloured culture in all its history, food and celebration. Sharing my story and repping my culture is a big part of my music and purpose as an artist. I will always be proud of my roots no matter where I am in the world.”

2. Personal experiences and emotions

“I think there's relatability in vulnerability. It doesn't matter where you are from, music is a way of

bringing peopletogether – sometimes through joy, sometimes through pain. I'm not always thinking about being relatable as much as I am thinking about being honest. We each have a story and it's up to you to share it.”

3. “Levels” remix with Nico de Andrea

“Infectious, deep and emotional –those are the three words that stand out to me. It's a remix of a very personal song I had on my album, which featured Kaien Cruz and Hanna. Nico knocked it out the park and created his own spin, bringing deep progressive house that will take you straight to the beach.”

4. The rise of digital platforms

“In music these days, longevity is about adaptability. There's always something new to learn and explore. I generally try to not overthink it, but rather give it a try. I think technology is there to enhance the experience, but it won't replace the heart of music.”

5. Discography genres and influences

“I consider myself a pop musician, but I have many in uences from jazz, soul and dance to gospel. I think my latest album, Things We Don't Talk About, released last year has a lot more live instrumentation. Usually we'd produce in studio and then take it to the stage, but we kinda brought the stage to this album in many ways. The project was nominated for Best Produced Album and Best Pop Album at the 2023 SAMAs. I'm extremely proud of everyone who worked to make this project come to life.”

6. Collaborations

“I've worked with various artists across the world and in South Africa – I love collabs, but don't do enough of them. I'd love to work with people outside of my genre in the future. Sometimes collabs are quite mechanical, but I'd love to get my hands dirty in the studio with some artists and really try to do something original and fresh. I'm thinking about something in the Amapiano space as well as the jazz scene.”

Taking care of your beard offers numerous bene ts that contribute to both your appearance and overall wellbeing. Here are some of the key advantages of proper beard care:

1. A well-groomed beard can greatly improve your overall appearance. It adds a touch of sophistication and maturity to your look, enhancing your facial features and bone structure.

2. Your beard can act as a natural barrier against harsh weather conditions such as cold winds and strong sunlight. It can help protect your skin from drying out and becoming irritated.

3. Proper beard care, including regular washing and conditioning, can prevent skin irritation and itchiness that sometimes occur when facial hair is left unattended. Regular cleaning and maintenance of your beard also help prevent the accumulation of dirt, debris and bacteria that can lead to skin infections or breakouts.
