Hanging On To Summer Elder care is becoming an industry! I see Adult Day Care, Senior Centers, Assisted Living Facilities, Long Term Health Care, Medicare, Home Health Care, AARP, Social Security Benefits, Senior Living Magazines, cabinets full of pills, constant T.V. ads for remedies of every imaginable ailment, canes, walkers, pain patches everywhere. Have they been there all along and I just haven’t noticed? Am I getting so old that they are more prevalent in my world? Or is it just that the population is aging? So many people are living longer and the needs of the elderly are overwhelming. What is middle age? It used to be 35 in my mother’s day. It is now 65 or so I would like to think. People are not really old until they are in their 90s and then we keep them alive with all kinds of survival remedies and concoctions. But, we don’t want to just survive. We want to thrive. We want to look great, move quickly and easily and live without pain. We want to remember stuff and speak up. We want to be productive and relevant. Some would be happy to put down their canes and put on their “silver sneakers”. I don’t want to age gracefully. I’m going down kicking and screaming and fully dressed in bright red lipstick, dangling earrings and high heels. Old age be damned. I’m hanging on to Summer!

The Cover “Drinking a cup of green tea, we stopped the War”

This Buddhist quote is one of my favorites. When I asked Reiki practitioner, Mary Jane Brigger, Sweet Summer Serenity what she wanted to wear for the cover shoot, she said, “You know me, I like my long dresses.” Mary Jane is always soft, comfortable and feminine. The cover article on page 3 talks about her and Reiki, which is a healing art developed by a Japanese Buddhist in 1922. There was so much about “mother energy” in our recent session that I chose to wear a Japanese Kimono that had been given to me by my 93 year old mother in law. She had received it 50 years ago from the costume designer for the Perry Como Show. Her husband was Perry’s brother-in-law and personal manager. My mother in law, who lives in New York, just spent three days visiting with me here in Ohio. I chose Japanese ornaments for my hair which were given to me by my mother. There was just a lot of “mother” energy in the house. Mary Jane and I sat on my front porch for the shoot. We sipped our green tea and basked in the glorious beauty of symphonies of fuchsia flowers. I will be taping two T.V. pilots in August from my home that I am producing and hosting. The “moon child” in me has claimed my home as my heart, my sacred place. The show is about peace, healing, silver linings and journeys over the rainbow. At home, we get to the heart of the matter. Women, I think, may well be the ones to usher in the miracle of peace in this age. Mary Jane is one of those women…. bright, intuitive, visionary. I am counting on it. Sandra Lee Finds

REIKI- God Energy

A miraculous visit from my mother By Sandra Lee What is Reiki? Reiki is compatible with all world religions. It is a miraculous practice of energy healing given by a caring practitioner to a recipient who longs for relief from physical, spiritual, mental or emotional pain, stress or fatigue. Most sessions last 60-90 minutes and repeated sessions are an opportunity to heal deeper and deeper issues. While developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist, Reiki has integrated into the Western Spiritual traditions. We are reminded of Christ’s laying on of hands and His words that we would do “ even greater works than these”. The Judeo/ Christian Faith is rich with healing rituals. What I didn’t know is that many Reiki practitioners have an “intuitive” gift. They can be mediums and able to channel visits from departed loved ones. I cherish an open mind and no one could have been more surprised than my Reiki practitioner, Mary Jane Brigger, and I when, on my birthday, I scheduled, on a whim, a second Reiki session. The first had been relaxing and revealing. While I thought the second would be a lovely treat, it turned out to be a life changing treasure that completely overwhelmed me with awe, joy and a renewed faith in the miraculous. Mary Jane uses a technique called “story telling” in her sessions which appeals to the writer in me. I get to tell my story and even act moments of it out. My session would not look anything like yours. Each story is different and each participant is respectfully To advertise call 440-390-8778 or email brandy717@cox.net

need only touch my heart and she would be there. Tears of tenderness and humility flowed as I was blessed this way on my birthday with this mysterious and magnificent experience.

As we talked, I began to tell the story of my mother. It poured out of me like wine, sacred and sensitive. “Speak to your Mother,” Mary Jane urged. Awkwardly, I uttered a few shy, tentative and deeply loving words. I have spent most of my life missing my mother. We lived in different states after I married and my longing for her was endless all of her life and even more after she passed. My sadness for wanting more of her has always been profound. And so, as I tentatively said my few words, the room filled with a mystical presence of other worldly energy and Mary Jane began to weep. “Your Mother is here,” she said. “She wants to speak to you.” And then she did – like an angel from across time and space, she spoke, saying all the things I longed to hear. She walked over to me and placed her beating heart into my hands. She asked me to place her heart into mine and softly assured me that anytime I needed her, I

My son had called early that morning from New York, to let me know that he was sending a sentimental gift. “Money has been tight this year, Mom”, he apologized. “But I did put a package in the mail to you that I think you will like for your birthday. Absolutely anything sent from my son or his family would be received with complete joy. And so, the morning after this revelatory session with Mary Jane Brigger, my son’s package arrived. It was my mother’s rosary which I had given to him after she passed. He said in a note that something told him she wanted me to have it. I placed it in my hands as though it was my mother’s beating heart and held it close to mine. I had received a gift from the Energy of God.

Easy Ways to Love the Way You Look By Kelly Bartlett In a recent telephone poll, PEOPLE magazine asked 1,000 women about their bodies and how the images of celebrity stars influence their self-esteem. The results? Only 10 percent of respondents said they were completely satisfied with themselves, and 80 percent said images of women on TV and in movies, fashion magazines and advertising make them feel insecure about their looks. “One of the best feelings in the world is seeing tears of joy when a woman looks in the mirror and no longer sees her scalp shining through or when she sees the luxurious hair she had dreamed flowing all the way beyond her shoulders. The most rewarding part of being a hairdresser is helping women gain self esteem. Stories and testimonials, such as the following narrative become a catalyst for us to research new methods and learn new techniques, “ says Kelly Bartlett. “Have you ever looked with envy at celebrities, beauty queens, or just the numerous women in public with gorgeous hair and think “If only I could have that hair!” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had that experience.. Deep down, I knew I’d feel so much better about myself if my hair wasn’t so wimpy and ugly. And sadly, I’m among the 90 percent of women who are insecure about themselves in some way. Come to think of it, what friend do I have that doesn’t point out their own personal flaws they would like to change?

Recently I was sitting in a packed doctor’s office looking for something other than a gossip tabloid or sports magazine, when I found a Women’s Journal. In it was an article with photos of before and after pictures of women with some great looking hair. According to the article, I could get this hair too and look just as good as the women in the photos. I have thin, fine, hopeless hair that doesn’t hold a curl, never looks thick, doesn’t grow, and I have to wash it every day to remove the “drowned rat look.” At the Hair Specialists, they took my hair; I mean MY nothing, pathetic hair and transformed it to look like Carrie Underwood! Ok, I admit not the face. But, my hair is fantastic!! It so true that when you look good, you feel better. I was so impressed with my new hair I told my friends all about it. One of my best pals who has crazy curly brillo pad hair went to the Hair Specialists and had it permanently straightened with a process called Japanese Thermal Straightening. She looks like they removed her hair and replaced it with Jennifer Aniston’s hair. Ok, once again not the face but the hair!!!” Alison Samuels A simple change such as adding some hair, enhancing your color, or even smoothing out the curl can cause a huge transformation in how you feel about yourself. When you are happy about your appearance you will smile more, anger less and enjoy being yourself. Call us at 330-655-2222 for a free consultation. 5 Signs Your Elderly Parent May Need Assistance By: Jodi Wood, RN of Summit County Visiting Angels Provides Solutions Tallmadge, Ohio (January 23, 2013) – Recent visits home over the holidays have some Baby Boomers and Generation X’ers concerned about their aging parent’s ability to care for themselves. Long absences between visits can mean that children find their elderly parents a bit more forgetful, depressed, unsteady on their feet or exhibiting signs of early onset dementia. “It is common after the holidays to receive calls from adult children concerned about their parent’s safety,” said Jodi Wood, RN, owner of the Summit County branch of Visiting Angels. “For the most part their parents are able to care for themselves, but there may be signs that periodic home care might be a viable solution.” Wood outlines some of the signs that indicate it may be time to consider in-home assistance. 1. Home safety. Parents who are occasionally unsteady, forget to turn the gas off under the tea kettle, struggle to navigate the basement stairs to do their laundry. 2. Nutrition concerns. Adult children may notice their parents forgetting to eat, eating unbalanced meals, struggling to plan, shop and prepare their meals.

3. Forgetful. Beyond entering a room and not remember why, some parents may begin to exhibit signs of confusion when walking the neighborhood, forgetting how to get home, or showing signs of depression and anxiety. 4. Medication management. Aging parents who struggle to manage their daily medication, can’t remember if they have taken their pills or need assistance with understanding possible drug interactions or side effects. 5. Driving concerns. If the parent demonstrates confusion, poor judgment or stress over driving may need assistance running errands and getting to doctor appointments. Although a parent may not be ready to make the move to assisted living or fulltime nursing care, often having in home care can be a beneficial solution. “Caring for your parents from a distance can seem like an insurmountable undertaking,” said Wood. “Often having someone come to the house to help the parent get their day started, with personal care, dressing, meal preparation, medicine management and companionship is all that is needed.” Before discussing a permanent move with your elderly parent, consider the options that

Not an Ordinary Massage Danielle Schlea, known as Danielle Hopkins for the previous 16 years, has practiced Massage Therapy in Hudson since 1997, and is now located in Salon Fifteen. A 1991 graduate from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree with Excercise Science background, Dani had experience operating work site health centers and promotion prior to entering the massage therapy field. It was an easy transition for her as she focuses on deep muscle therapy, and many of her clientele have athletic backgrounds themselves. She has received clients coming from area doctor and physical therapy offices and athletic trainers, as well as Akron Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine Physicians. Even the local running shoe store, Vertical Runner, has great rapport with her, referring many of their ailing runners. Dani has been certified in Orthopedic Massage for the past 9 years. She has great focus to get to the root of the problem and answer questions about why clients’ bodies are in pain. “It’s like a puzzle to me. When a person gets on the massage table, I listen to what they tell me about their physical issues before I begin any body work. I have an ability to find structural problems they don’t realize they have.” Dani works very “deep” so this isn’t your typical relaxation massage. “My clients come to me for a reason and they trust 8

The Women’s Journals™ Summit – Portage – Stark

me because I try very hard to gage the massage pressure to what the individual can handle. Some need more, some less. The key is to listen to the client.” The age range of clients is from 8 years old to 88 years old. She uses a structural integration concept. “The body is a lever and pulley system. so you need to understand the mechanics of how the body compensates for itself. I don’t think enough massage therapists take that information into account. Even if you just want a regular ‘relaxation’ massage, chances are you still need the structural body work. I haven’t worked on anyone who doesn’t!” Dani tells her clients that we live in a “flexoholic society”, meaning everything we tend to do on a daily basis requires us to bend forward at the waist, and that’s where problems begin. “It is part of my job to educate the client in posture to help free themselves of the pain they are creating. You can correct your posture every minute of the day. So over time, with the conscious effort on the clients’ part and my massage work, they will feel better and know how to keep themselves strong.”

Massage therapy works side by side with any medical doctor, chiropractor, physical therapist, or acupuncturist. “The concept is to get you feeling better, sooner,” says Dani, “and to find a therapist who works for you.” Her schedule is typically booked solid for 2 weeks ahead, and clients are often booked 2 months ahead to assure needed time slots. “I often say I have the best job in the world because people cannot wait to see me and don’t like leaving. It’s a very gratifying field, and I love being able to help people who are in pain to either see the pain alleviated or have it gone completely.”

Understanding massage has evolved over the years. Many people are tired of taking medications that do not alleviate the pain or that create other physical problems. Massage can be a different option. Dani’s goal is to be part of the medical spectrum with each client. Like Us on Facebook.com/thesummitcountywomensjournal

Dani is also certified in pregnancy massage and has worked with the local Hudson High School and Western Reserve Academy student athletes and athletic trainers. “Teaching the young moms and the young athletes that massage is a great way to take care of themselves has been a terrific experience for me. Massage is about preventative maintenance for everyone. It’s not about pampering yourself as some people think. If you suffer from muscular pain on a regular basis there has to be a reason why. Finding out what causes the problem is what I enjoy doing best.”

Iridology

The eyes are the windows to the soul

By: Joan ‘Taj’ Leppla, M.Ed. The eyes are the windows to the soul. The eyes can show anger, love, tenderness, bewilderment, and many other states of being. The eyes are also windows to the body and this is what iridology is all about. According to the science of iridology, the irises represent a reflexive imprint of one’s genetic strengths and weaknesses at the time of birth. How does this happen? Well, the irises contain bundles of thousands of nerve fibers that are connected through the optic nerve to every organ and tissue of the body. Signals are sent by the organs and tissues via the central nervous system to the optic nerve

where they are recorded in the irises by color and markings indicating the quality of energetic flow and connection. This is not unlike the science of reflexology in which the organs and systems of the body are reflected in the feet. The difference is that the eyes are the only part of the body where we can actually observe this reflex response. Evidence suggests that study of the iris existed before Biblical times. Written records and silver plates dating back to ancient Egypt are the first known educational materials on iridology. The science of Iridology has been evolving for over 100 years and the term “iridology” was first coined in 1861 by Ignatz Peczely, a Hungarian physician. As a boy, Peczely was said to have observed how the iris of an owl changed, first when it suffered a broken leg and then after the leg healed. After qualifying as a doctor and making many clinical observations, he published the first charts of the iris.

Iridology became internationally known in 1952 through the work of Dr. Bernard Jensen, a pioneer in holistic and alternative health, who was considered to be the leading authority on Iridology in the world during his lifetime (1908-2001). Unfortunately, iridology has mostly been dismissed in the US due to the rise of synthetic drugs and a shift away from natural approaches to health. Despite this, iridology remains a useful tool in determining what areas a person can best focus on to improve overall health. There is an equation that defines one’s health status. Health Status = Physical Inheritance + Environment (Diet & Lifestyle) + Emotional / Spiritual Life + Age Research shows that only 1 to 3 percent of diseases are caused by genetics (physical inheritance) alone. Research also shows that we can change our inherited genetic memory by making changes in aspects of the health status equation. For example, genes have been shown to be expressed, or not, depending on the quality of one’s diet. Since you can affect health enhancing changes to your diet, lifestyle, and emotional / spiritual life, you have a large degree of control over the quality of your health. In fact, the only aspect in the health equation that you have no control over is your factual age. A skilled iridologist supports others in taking control of their health using a holistic approach to trace the roots of weakness and imbalance. Clients learn how their body is designed to function, how emotions, thoughts, and relationships affect wellness, and where to best focus attention to reach optimal health and vitality. During an iris reading a light and magnifying glass are used to view the irises to determine a client’s genetic Like Us on Facebook.com/thesummitcountywomensjournal

strengths and weaknesses, resiliency, and constitutional type. Iridology is not about diagnosing disease. An iridologist simply reads the irises to assess the health and vitality of bodily systems and then offers suggestions to naturally support and strengthen weak areas. Our bodies function holistically and we are only as strong as the weakest link. Our bodies are gifted with innate intelligence and will spontaneously heal when given proper support, so, we work to naturally strengthen weak areas to improve overall health. As a certified iridologist, health counselor, and detoxification specialist, Joan takes a collaborative approach with her clients to design a sustainable program that supports greater health and vitality through natural means. This is an important key to her work because no two people are exactly alike; each life is unique with unique challenges. In addition to iridology, Joan incorporates a variety of other tools to support health and well-being including herbal formulas, tree essences, energy and sound healing, relaxation and meditation, intuitive eating, and spending time in nature. www.whereearthmeetsspirit.com joan@whereearthmeetsspirit.com 330-655-5454

&HOHEUDWLQJ <HDUV On September 21, Komen Northeast Ohio will celebrate 20 years of Racing for the Cure in Cleveland. “There is such energy and interest behind our 20th Race for the Cure. We are thrilled have the Race return to Malls B & C in downtown Cleveland and to be in the heart of the city, says Audra Avarello, Cleveland’s Race Chair. “The Race is our primary source of funds for grants that serve breast cancer patients in our service area, said Sean Shacklett, Executive Director of Komen Northeast Ohio. “With strong support from our community and increased participation in the Race, we can make an even greater impact in the fight against breast cancer. This 20 year milestone has inspired Komen Northeast Ohio to reflect on its history of serving the local community. Linda Campbell, the first Race for the Cure Chair, had recognized the need for breast health services in the Cleveland area. “There was little access to mammograms for the medically underserved and our goal was to broaden that access. The first Race for the Cure attracted 3,000 runners, 400 volunteers and strong corporate support. Long-time backer Hermes Sports & Events has been with the Race for the Cure since the beginning. Your Personal Safety is Important

JOHN D. FERRERO Stark County Prosecuting Attorney

Stark County Prosecutor’s Office 110 Central Plaza South Suite 510 Canton, Ohio 44702 Phone: 330-451-7897

Personal safety should be everyone’s concern. In the past 20 years, violence has increasingly affected every aspect of our lives. Violence itself and the climate of fear and terror it creates can have a lasting effect on a person’s emotional, financial and physical health. This has been demonstrated in the release of the three women held in captivity for over a decade in Cleveland. The same can be said about the numerous murders in the Sowell case also in Cleveland.

• Never leave your purse or wallet in a shopping cart or on a counter.

Hence, what can a person do to protect oneself? The best defense against crime is to practice good personal safety. Some things you can do include:

• Park in well lit areas. Avoid isolated areas.

• If you feel unsafe after working or shopping late in the evening, ask a colleague or security officer to walk you to your car. • If someone suspicious enters an elevator you are on, get off. • Know where hospitals, police and fire stations are located.

• Use common sense and basic safety precautions.

• If you think someone is following you, don’t head home. Drive to the nearest police or fire station, or other business that is open 24 hours a day.

• Always be aware of your surroundings.

• Keep your cell phone with you at all times.

• Let someone know where you are going and when you will be coming home. Call if you will be late.

If you would like more information or a presentation to your group on this subject, please contact the Office of John D. Ferrero, Stark County Prosecuting Attorney at 330-451-7888 and ask to speak to Certified Crime Prevention Specialist Jim Knight of the Victim/Witness Division.

• Keep your doors locked and keep your home well lit.

Now Mom can stay in her home. Regain your independence and stay in your home with a stairway lift from Access Solutions. These high-quality lifts are compact, easy to operate and can be installed in nearly every home. We offer a complete selection of stairway lifts, wheelchair lifts and elevators for residential and commercial use.

Everyone Plays a Role in Suicide Prevention By Barbara L. Medlock, R.N., M.S.N., Coordinator SUPPORT Hotline, Portage Path Behavioral Health

World Suicide Prevention Day is September 10, 2013. Suicide is a serious public health problem that causes immeasurable pain, suffering, and loss to individuals, families, and communities nationwide. For every person who dies by suicide, more than 30 others attempt suicide. About 100 Americans die by suicide each day, more than double the average number of homicides. 8 million adults in the United

14

States had serious thoughts of suicide within the past 12 months. Every suicide attempt and death affects countless other individuals. Family members, friends, coworkers, and others in the community all suffer the long-lasting consequences of suicidal behaviors. Suicide also places a heavy burden on the nation in terms of the emotional suffering that families and communities experience as well as the economic costs associated with medical care and lost productivity. And yet, suicidal behaviors often continue to be met with silence and shame.

The Women’s Journals™ Summit – Portage – Stark

These attitudes can be formidable barriers to providing care and support to individuals in crisis and to those who have lost a loved one to suicide. Fortunately, suicide can be preventable. There is strong evidence that a comprehensive public health approach is effective in reducing suicide rates. The recently released National Strategy for Suicide Prevention recognizes that prevention should be woven into all aspects of our lives. Everyone—businesses, educators, health care institutions, government, communities, and every single American—

The historic costumes in The Great Gatsby, The Artist, and PBS’s Downton Abbey, celebrate the art of fashion and shine a joyful spotlight on sensational hats and headwear. The quality of the materials and craftsmanship sets a handmade hat apart from its machine-molded, massproduced counterparts. Many of us have heard about the slow food movement, where people reject the fast-food model and instead opt for a leisurely dining experience and extended conversation with friends and family. Fashion consumers who appreciate enduring style and quality are taking a similar approach and rejecting inexpensive, imported, mass produced “fast fashion” for classic, well-constructed pieces that are made to last.

Tips on Choosing a Hat Unless a person is an experienced hat wearer, she may feel lost when it comes to finding a hat that really suits her. Choosing the right hat is all about balance and harmony. Here are a few simple guidelines: Whether your face is oval, round, square, long or angular, make sure the crown, which is the top part of the hat above the brim, aligns with the widest part of your face. Otherwise, the hat will have the appearance of being too small. Take into consideration your overall body size. A larger woman looks best in a larger brim hat that balances her proportions and petite women look better in smaller styles that don’t overwhelm them. Life insurance can do some pretty amazing things for people. • It can buy loved ones time to grieve. • It can pay off debts and loans, providing surviving family members with the chance to move on with a clean slate. • It can keep families in their homes and pre-fund a child’s college education. • It can keep a family business in the family. • It can provide a stream of income for a family to live on for a period of time. The best way to handle your taxes is one day at a time. A few dozen large envelopes or some file folders that are standing up in a file drawer and easy to reach are the answer. Label them boldly with categories such as BANK STATEMENTS, CHARITABLE DONATIONS, MORTGAGE SATEMENT, CAR EXPENSES, GAS, UTILITIES, TRAVEL EXPENSES, RESTAURANTS, BUSINESS SUPPLIES, COMPUTER COSTS, CLEANING, ETC. Make going through your mail a daily or weekly ritual and organize as you go along. It is a joy to be able to put your hands on a document without the stress

of wading through mounds of disorganized paper chaos. Keep your previous returns on file so that you can see what you did in previous years. Then when tax time comes, you can be stress free as you leisurely list your items and present them to your tax accountant. Your returns will be more generous because you will not have to remember everything at once and your mental health will be protected. Your accountant will love you and be so proud of you.

Leave it to the Pros! It’s a beautiful day and like so many professional people living in a home where every resident is working full time and over time, I have no time for any real deep cleaning. I am so grateful to the pros who come and go and help me to keep the house in respectable order. The windows have not been cleaned in a very long time and I wince at the prospect of bringing someone in to do the job. They will huff and puff for sure and likely criticize me for being so negligent. By Sandra Lee

I met Eric Lund one day when I saw his bright yellow SERVICEMASTER truck tooling around Hudson. I kept telling myself to grab a pen and write down the number of the business. I prodded myself…”C’mon, your windows haven’t been thoroughly cleaned in years and your light carpeting is in desperate need of attention and your wood floors could use a cleaning and polish and your deck needs power washing and your high chandeliers and fans are so dusty!” and on and on and on! Of course, I couldn’t find a pen. Then I pulled into the bank to make a deposit from the car and there was that yellow truck again! I followed it like a stalker and hunted Eric down. “ Hey”, I yelled, “ I need a lot of help! Can we talk?” And so it started. I’ve been calling Eric ever since to do the work I simply cannot do. I don’t have the time. And I clearly don’t have the strength. And I don’t have the proper equipment to do it all. Eric has the time, the strength, the equipment and one more thing…the most wonderful manners and gentle spirit. It is highly personal to bring someone into your home or place of business and allow them access to your space. It is good to leave such work to the pros but what pros? It is important to have a reference. Eric, you have one in me. Great attitude, great skill, great job!

Is the

51st state coming soon?

By: Fred Wright If I had to guess most of America doesn’t know that the US commonwealth island of Puerto Rico is making political moves to become the 51st state of our great union. While the process is slow like many political maneuvers it’s on its way following a vote this past November. Of course one never knows when and how it will happen but what you do need to know, whether statehood succeeds or not, our island neighbor has much to offer for the leisure traveler. My time living in Puerto Rico opened my eyes to the island’s rich natural resources and a history that dates back to Columbus’ second voyage in 1493 that gave me the desire to take tour groups to this nearby US Commonwealth. The peaceful natives Columbus found, called Tainos, were the native Americans of the island region and to this day have a rich place in Puerto Rico’s culture. While today you would be hard pressed to find any direct descendants on this small island (106 miles long & 37 miles wide) what you will find is a friendly population and happy tourists. There are also three small islands included in the Commonwealth: Vieques and Culebra to the east and Mona to the west, all of

which make up a wonderful place to enjoy beaches, mountains, a rain forest (part of the US Park system), and the oldest city on US soil, Old San Juan. If you have never been to Puerto Rico or if you want to experience it again with a small group of adventurous fun folks this is for you. That desire to get away to a tropical climate ( 80 degree average year round) with all the advantages of still being on US soil - US dollar, cell service & no passport required - that calls us as the cold weather arrives can be satisfied for less that think. We are beginning our tours this fall and winter and request you call or email us for the details. Read on for a short description of what we are offering. No matter where you live the San Juan airport has easy access and reasonable fares with many direct flights. After arriving and a short cab ride to your beach front hotel you will have time to relax on the beach or try your luck in the casino. You will join your fellow travelers for dinner at a popular local restaurant the first night. The next day we will explore the quaint streets of Old San Juan with a short visit to Fort San Cristobal which defended the city against attacks from pirates followed by dinner at a charming Puerto Rican restaurant. A chef will welcome guests

and talk with them about Puerto Rican cuisine. He explains local vegetables, and some of the common spices. Guests then learn how to make a mojito, a sugary minty rum concoction, and Mofongo, a popular dish in Puerto Rico. Day three is an all day trip south to Ponce with a stop at Coamo’s Thermal Hot Springs After a 90 minute drive you be greeted with a panoramic view of the Caribbean coast from El Vigia Hill, towering several hundred feet over the city of Ponce. We will spend time exploring Serrallés Castle and city’s center that has been lovingly restored to its original turn of the century splendor and features a spacious tree-lined plaza, On the way back to San Juan we will stop at Coamo Thermal Hot Springs, a natural wonder that makes Puerto Rico a pretty cool place. Located along a cold river in the town of Coamo, hot water springs naturally bubble from the earth. http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/ coamo-thermal-springs/ Day four we will transfer to our beach front hotel on the east side of the island for an evening BIOLUMINESCENCE KAYAK NIGHT ADVENTURE on the fascinating lagoon at Las Cabezas de San Juan Reserve where you can touch the waters that glow with the bioluminescence organism.

Day five begins an all-day adventure when we depart from Puerto Del Rey Marina aboard the Island Flyer, a turbo speed Catamaran, that in only 45 minutes arrives the magnificent Coral Reef of near by Culebra and snorkeling at world famous Flamenco Beach. Enjoy full open bar, snacks, Piña Coladas, Rum Punch and more. Lunch Buffet of fresh fruits, fresh-baked breads, sliced deli meats, cheeses, gourmet pasta and other island delights. Day six takes us to the Caribbean National Rain Forest, known as El Yunque, which climbs from almost sea level to about 3,500 feet and is doused with up to 200 inches of rain every year. We will hike on easy trails to El Mira waterfalls for a swim and a quiet retreat to enjoy a peaceful lunch surrounded by the beauty of the rainforest. Whether Puerto Rico becomes our 51st state or not this will be fun adventure you will talk about for years. “Rainmaker Insights”: The Case for Networking By Emily M. Kelly, Business Development Representative, Metisentry, Akron, Ohio. “How are you involved in the community? Do you belong to any networking groups?” This is a question I always ask my strategic planning clients in Metisentry’s initial marketing consult inventory. And I often get the same response. “I joined a Chamber once, but I never got any business from it.” To which I reply, “Did you ever go to a meeting?” … Silence. As I always say, “Hope is not a strategy.” Joining a Chamber, or any other networking group, listing your business in the directory and crossing your fingers that someone is going to call to buy whatever it is that you are selling is absolute foolishness. But you’d be AMAZED at how many small business owners do just that … and then blame the Chamber for “wasting their money.” Well, we here at Metisentry believe strongly in the power of connecting with others, learning about their businesses, giving qualified referrals in good faith, and connecting with them in the virtual (social networking) world to continue to solidfy the trust building/relationship building effort that makes the act of doing business more HUMAN. In this day and age, we feel it is critical to not just slap together a website, send an invoice and walk away; but to look our colleagues in the eye, shake their hand, and call them by name. We pride ourselves on listening to our potential clients and trying to help them solve the problems in their business, even if that means WE have to adapt our service offerings to meet that need. We stay connected with them through the process and even after the sale through To advertise call 440-390-8778 or email brandy717@cox.net

reporting and ongoing consulting to ensure that the strategies and tactics that we recommend are working as efficiently and effectively as we set forth for them to. Because we believe so strongly in the power of relationship building through networking, and because we are so proud of our membership as a part of the Greater Akron Chamber, and of having been selected for their Ambassador Program launching at the end of August; we are offering a special discount to fellow Chamber members and to those who would like to join. We will design your special offer website at an affordable price, and discount that price by the cost of one year’s membership in the Greater Akron Chamber, to afford you the opportunity to stretch your marketing dollars, and to give networking a good, fair try. So if you ARE a member of the Greater Akron Chamber, call us (330)294-4910 to design your site at this discounted price! And if you are NOT a member of the Greater Akron Chamber, and you are in need of a new website, please allow us to design that site, and we will discount the price of our special website offering in the amount of one year’s membership dues. Did we mention we transfer your domain for free, too? If you have not given the Greater Akron Chamber, or any local networking group, an honest effort, we highly recommend that you do. Most small business owners say their number one growth strategy is word of mouth. What better way to get some “word of mouth” going, than to be out and about opening your mouth about what it is that you do, and more importantly, listening to others open their mouths about what THEY do.

Alternatives to Driving under the Influence of Alcohol By Sherri Bevan Walsh Summit County Prosecutor The legal limit for blood alcohol content (BAC) in the state of Ohio is 0.08 percent. Although a number of factors impact BAC, the average person reaches the legal limit after two to three servings of alcohol. A long period of time in between drinks does diminish an individual’s BAC. However, the decrease is negligible amounting to a lowering on average of .01 percent for every hour you don’t drink. Experts strongly suggest not driving after drinking two to three servings of alcohol. A serving of alcohol is a 12-ounce beer, one ounce of liquor or a four-ounce glass of wine.

The increased focus in Ohio on enforcing Operating a Vehicle under the Influence (OVI) offenses makes rolling the dice on drinking and driving a costly and dangerous gamble. OVI arrests in the state of Ohio increased by more than 900 from 2010 to 2011. As a result of increased enforcement and proactive policing, OVI-related fatalities in Ohio were down nine percent compared to previous years. However, more than 824 people were killed in Ohio due to OVI drivers in 2011. A first-time OVI arrest in Ohio costs the driver approximately $10,000. This includes: a $1,000 fine, $250 for towing and impound, $2,500 in lawyer fees, $150 for treatment and education, $100 for victim’s reparation fund, $150 for a driver’s license reinstatement, $300 for lost

work and $4,500 for three years of high-risk insurance. Additional costs that studies are unable to accurately track include lost work opportunities. More importantly, the impaired judgment of a drunk driver can cause irreparable damage to themselves, their friends and other innocent drivers or bystanders. My office has prosecuted too many drunk drivers who either permanently injured or even killed someone. There are many cheap and safe alternatives to getting behind the wheel of a car after having a few alcoholic drinks. The average cab ride costs $10 to $20, which can usually be split among friends. Friends can take turns being a designated driver. A good incentive for the designated driver could be filling up their tank of gas or paying for their dinner during

your night out. Additionally, when hosting a social function or fundraiser, hiring a service or individuals to drive people home is a small price to pay to ensure the safety of your guests. The financial costs, possible injuries or death and emotional harm caused each and every day in the State of Ohio can and should be avoided by enjoying one’s night responsibly. Call a cab or assign a designated driver for all activities.

Signs of an Abusive Relationship see where you are, what you’re doing and who you’re with. • Trying to control where you go and who you can see and getting angry if you don’t do what they say. Jealousy: • Accusing you without good reason of being unfaithful or flirting. • Isolating you from family and friends, often by rude behavior.

Susan Lax, Esq. Working out whether you’re in an abusive relationship isn’t always easy. Learning the signs of an abusive relationship can give some perspective. Thinking that abusive behavior is your fault is a common feeling, but it’s important to know that you’re never to blame for another person’s behavior. You might be in an abusive relationship if your partner... • tries to control your behavior • gets jealous easily • insults you in public or private • makes you feel confused or like you are going ‘crazy’ • threatens violence against you, your pets, or people you love • makes you feel scared What is an abusive relationship? Abuse is experienced in heaps of different ways and isn’t just limited to physical violence. An abusive relationship can include sexual, emotional and physical abuse, and can also involve control of finances. Key signs relationship

Put downs: • Putting you down, either publicly or privately, by attacking your intelligence, looks, mental health or capabilities. • Constantly comparing you unfavorably with others. • Blaming you for all the problems in the relationship, and for the times they are out of control or violent. Threats: • Yelling, sulking and deliberately breaking things that you value. • Threatening to use violence against you, your family, friends or even a pet. • Saying things like ‘no one else will want you’. Physical and sexual violence: • Pushing, shoving, hitting, grabbing, making you have sex or do things you don’t want to do • Harming you, your pets or your family members Things you might feel in an abusive relationship? ‘My partner isn’t violent all the time - they love me’ A violent relationship may not be violent all the time and the person who is violent may seem

very loving at other times and sorry for their behavior. This can make it hard to stay angry and upset with them. However, the chance of their violent behavior continuing is quite high. Abusers are often very charming and sweet with other people, especially if they are trying to manipulate other people’s view of them. ‘Things will get better - they don’t mean it’ After a violent event, it’s common for both of you to try and make it ok by making excuses, apologizing, or promising to change. Sometimes the violent person may even blame you – saying things like ‘it wouldn’t have happened if you didn’t…’. Things might settle down for a little while but it’s often only a matter of time before the build-up to violence starts again. ‘It’s so confusing - I’m sure it’s a one-off ’ If you are experiencing violence in a relationship, things can feel very confusing, especially if it’s your first relationship. You might not be sure what behaviour to expect. Abusers often work on your sense of what is real to make you feel confused or even that you are going crazy. Statistically though, if someone is violent once they are far more likely to be violent a second time.

‘Maybe it’s my fault’ You might begin to think that the violence is your fault. The abuser will probably tell you that it is. The truth is that no matter what you do, another person’s behaviour is never your fault. ‘I’m scared of what will happen if I leave them’ In an abusive relationship, it’s not unusual to be afraid of leaving the person you are with. This can be for a number of reasons, such as fearing for your own safety, or being fearful of what the person might do to themselves. You might also be afraid of not being able to make it on your own. But it’s important to remember that you’re not on your own and there are people who can help you every step of the way. What to do if this sounds like you No one deserves to be in a relationship where they don’t feel safe. If you are in a relationship that you think might be abusive, find out more about what you can do. When you think you have had enough, be sure to meet with a qualified divorce attorney to explore your options. Call Susan Lax at 330-745-1500.

Free At Last! On April 9, 1997, my prayers were finally answered. I lost my job. I knew it was coming for a long time, I just didn’t know when. I was told by my boss that I would be singled out By Barbara L. Harding and let go because times were tough and cuts had to be made. Waiting for that final day was the most difficult part. So, when I was finally summoned to take the long walk down Executive Row, and meet the “Big Guy,”- I was filled with both relief and fear. I had been miserable with this job from the beginning. I was hired on April Fools Day and it didn’t get better! I never should have accepted the job, but once I did, I just couldn’t quit. The fighter in me kept urging me to do more, find a way to make it work. The simple truth was, it was not going to work. Just like a bad marriage, this was a bad situation from day one. I had spent endless hours praying that things would turn around and that I would land the big account and everything would be alright. The big account was a mirage, so real one moment and then gone...in a heart beat. Then it would occasionally re-appear in the distance, calling to me to chase after it again. It occurred to me that maybe the reason this door was not opening was because I was meant to do something else. But what? Where was my passion? It was right in front of me all the time! Could it be that now I was really going to be able to follow my passion for writing and publishing? I had been slowly over the years fulfilling my hearts’ desire. Now I had a chance to see how close I was to my goal. Fear kept me from really believing my eyes. Could I be self-sustaining? In time, yes. Many years ago I was imagining the perfect day in my life. I realized that there was a small voice in me that kept telling me that it would never happen for me. It could happen for other people, but not for me. My strong belief now in the power of my thoughts told me that I can have, be, or do anything I want. But first, I have to become, in mind and spirit, the type of person who lets good and glorious things happen to me. Why couldn’t I be happily self- sufficient following my passion?

30

The Women’s Journals™ Summit – Portage – Stark

Was it written down anywhere that I was not allowed to experience that kind of freedom? I looked everywhere and I could not find any authoritative mandate that said that I, Barbara Louse Harding, should be kept from total and complete happiness on all levels of my life. Hum....So why hadn’t I vigorously pursued my dream before? The answer was FEAR. Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of the unknown. Fear has been a constant companion most of my life. Fear has many faces: jealousy, rage, depression, resentment and procrastination. It is said that fear is lack of faith. In order to get rid of my fear, I had to work on my faith in whatever power controls the universe, God, or a Higher Power, or whatever you want to call it. I have to have complete and utter faith in it. I had to come to believe that I too could realize my fullest potential, and find my hearts’ desire and have a true place in the universe that God had created just for me! I had to believe that if I am doing the right things to follow my dreams, then doors will open for me. Circumstances will arrange themselves in such a way that I will find all the answers to my questions and my needs will be taken care of abundantly! Wow! But, what if my dream do come true? What if this all really does work out? What will I have to fear then? Will I have anything to whine and moan about? What will take place of the fear? FAITH! Faith will become my new best friend, fear will fade into the shadows. With faith comes responsibilities. I will have no one to blame but me. I am fully accountable for my actions. The opportunities for my success are endless. All I have to do is imagine, believe and own my dreams. It took over 20 years get to this point in my thinking. I have written volumes about my struggles with my fear. My personal journals repeatedly tell the story of a woman who is constantly battling the fear of life, setting myself up for failure in career choices, and relationships. The pattern was on automatic repeat. Time after time I ignored the small voice in my head that said, “don’t do it, and I did it anyway. Each time I was amazed and angry when things did not go according to my grand and glorious plan. That little voice was my Higher Power, trying to guide me out of harm’s way. It shouted at me thousands of times and each time I turned a deaf ear. This type of self defeating behavior has finally stopped. The price of ignoring that voice has been very high. I suffered needlessly for years until I finally learned to listen to that small voice in my head when it says don’t go there, don’t do that!

Like Us on Facebook.com/thesummitcountywomensjournal

That voice is the voice of my highest good, it is the conscious that I ignored for years. Finally, I am listening to my inner compass. Now I choose to believe that my highest good is waiting for me around every bend in the road. I have faith, that when I cannot imagine what the outcome will be, that if I continue to put one foot in front of the other and stay focused on my footsteps, I will be amazed when I look up and see where my journey has lead me. I no longer have to plan my life down to the finest details and live my life in a tight framework of specifics. I can now imagine what I would like and leave a lot of the details up to my Higher Power. Those details are usually wonderful gifts of joy, handed to me on a silver platter to enjoy for as long as I live! What greater gift can there be? I have carried this poem by Martha Smock in my wallet for over l0 years. It has inspired me to keep going in the most difficult times.

NO OTHER WAY Could we but see the pattern of our days, We should discern how devious were the ways By which we came to this, the present time, This place in life and we should see the climb Our soul has made up through the years. We should forget the hurt, the wanderings, the fears. The wastelands of our life, and know That we could come no other way or grow Into our good without these steps our feet Found hard to take, our faith found hard to meet. The road of life winds on, and we like travelers go From turn to turn until we come to know The truth that life is endless and that we Forever are inhabitants of all eternity. She is co-author of the book, Unforgettable, The Life and Legend of David Toma. Barbara Harding published The Recovery Journal for five years, which brought experience, strength and hope to people in recovery from all addictions and their families. Barbara is now working on her new book entitled, Change your Mind, Change Your World. 330-209-9663 email: rockinhorse00797@yahoo. com. This is an excerpt from her new book.

Hello Students, Faculty and Staff. First off let me say that I understand where all of you are right now. I too was sitting where you are not too long ago. I graduated in July 2008. I know! Here is another letter some former student wrote that you have to listen too. I also understand that. I used to sit there and say yeah right those are just the few that actually made it, what does that have to do with me? Well, I have come to find out that it did have a lot to do with me. When I started at OCB I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a Camera Operator. And guess what? That’s exactly what I am. I got my first job here at WTOV9 in Steubenville, Ohio as a Camera Operator. I shoot and edit the news 5 days a week. Yes I have to work weekends and yes I have to work nights. Yes I am the new guy and my schedule is all over the place. And yes the pay is low. But, I love my job and I know that this is the start of a great career. We all have to start somewhere. Remember that!!! I also want you to know that while OCB is a great school and teaches you the basics you need to know. You need to listen to them when they tell you that your internships are the most important thing you will do there. They tell you that you need to network and get to know as many people as

possible when you are at your internships. THAT IS 100% TRUE!! I can’t stress that enough to get to know everyone and ask a lot of questions. The more you show passion for your job the more people will want to help you obtain the career you desire. How do you think I got my job? I interned at WKYC Channel 3 on the Good Company Today Show. The job I was doing for them wasn’t exactly what I wanted to do in my career, but you know what? It doesn’t matter. The point is, that you are around all of the influential people in the business. I asked questions and volunteered for other jobs they needed help with. I got to know the Program Director and Production Director very well. After I graduated, the Production Director, Al Wohl at WKYC3 called me and asked if I would be will to help as a runner for the Browns preseason football games. THERE WAS NO PAY!! Did I say no? Absolutely not! Not only did I get to go behind the scenes at a Browns game, I did something more important. I showed Mr. Wohl that I had passion for the business. That really came back to help me when I got to my job search. I told Mr. Wohl where I was applying for jobs. I told him I sent a resume to WTOV9. He stopped, looked at me and said, “I know the General Manager for that station, let me make a quick phone call for you”. Sure enough about 3 weeks later I got a phone call from WTOV9 and got an interview. After that

interview I got a call back for a second interview. The General Manager for WTOV9 sat in on that interview. After the completion of that interview the General Manager looked at me and said, “I received a phone call, from Al Wohl, about you. Mr Wohl would never send me someone who wasn’t good at what they do and passionate about this business. We would be happy to offer you the job.” I couldn’t believe it. All that talk about networking was true. So remember, it is a very small business where everyone knows everyone. Never think that anything you do or say or even the way you act here in Cleveland, Ohio won’t get to someone else somewhere in the country, in this business. IT DOES!! There was one saying that one of my instructors told my class. “It’s not what you know, It’s not who you know, it’s who knows you!” That has stayed with me to this day and it is absolutely true. I know classes might be a drag sometimes, and I know that skipping classes can sometimes be an easy thing to do. But take it from me you are paying a lot of money to go to OCB. Don’t waste it by just doing the minimum. Take advantage of every opportunity you find. Ten months goes by faster than you think. Thank you for your time and I hope to see you all out there in the business soon. By the way, when I was sitting where you are I told myself that I would never write one of these letters. But, once I got here and into the business, I looked back on how I got here, and I just had to share my story with you. Wish you all well! Our Gift of Inspiration to You.... From the book CHRONIC, Living With Pain, Looking for Hope By Dr. Cornelius May Faith Fellowship Church 10277, Macedonia, Ohio 44056 330.467.1234

I WANT MY MOM My mom had a conflicting life as I look back upon her survival skills. She beat cancer. She overcame a harsh skin ailment. She returned after a breakdown. She scraped and crawled her way through a divorce. She eventually became a person of influence and financial success after much hard work and dedication. That’s my mom. She was a person acquainted with pain. Did I mention her headaches? Maybe it’s our sacred bond to our mothers by birth. Those nine months in the womb situated just under her heart have connected us to her voice and to her soul without question. We owe her for life itself. I can only pray that your mother treated you with love and respect. Only God’s great love can satisfy our core longings of acceptance and importance. Remember that. For this never changes, even if mothers and fathers come and go. God remains ever the same. Let God kiss you, and you will feel a calming. During a ferocious assault by air and sea as depicted on the screen, a wounded soldier lay on his back on the sandy blanket. His arms hold his stomach, for his intestines have been littered about by the mangling of lead. There is no hope. There is not enough morphine to stop his anguish. He cries out, “Mama, Mama!” We all just really want to go home. If Mom is not available, what are we to do? To replace her with someone else is no sign of disrespect. It is a basic need we have to survive the stressful situations of earthly existence. We need others. Your Crystal Ball! By Dee Siegferth

Dee Siegferth President and CEO The Milestone Center for Retirement and Estate Planning, LLC 2780 S. Arlington Road Suite 201 Akron, Ohio 44312 330-644-0284 www.themilestonecenter.com

If you could look at your future for each decade, what would your Crystal Ball reveal? Can you envision what you want for your future and those you love no matter at what age? As a child, I was going to become a famous writer, live In New York City, be happily married and have 2 or three children. I didn’t think much further than that when I graduated, got married, had babies, and begin a career in education. Much of my dream has happened! I don’t live in New York City, but I certainly travel a lot and enjoy the big cities, and I continue to write! How many times have you said, “I was going to do that, but …Life interruptions happen, such as: “issues at work, personal illness, bills, responsibilities, or other family interruptions “. I know quite a few women who make things happen, especially for others, but do not take the time to make things happen for themselves. I challenge you to focus on your wishes for your future. You could even be creative by using sticky notes or posting some pictures on your bathroom mirror or in your office that pertain to your wish. You may be surprised how you begin to think of your own dreams.

When you look at your financial dreams, think of how you would like your retirement to look. Where will your income come from? Will you have pension, social security, and investment savings to live on? With a financial plan, you will be prepared to achieve your financial dream to fund your retirement without just relying on Social Security or a 401k. In the meantime, your financial and risk protection plan will give you the peace of mind that you will not be devastated by any unexpected life event. Building your financial future now will allow you to do all of the things that you dreamed of doing before and after you retire. If you are presently retired, building your financial security plan becomes more important because you need to be in control of your decisions for what you want to happen for the rest of your lives and after you pass. When Is Enough Enough? How Moderation Sometimes Escapes Me By Amanda E. van Brakle

I woke up late yesterday. It was a Saturday, so feeling okay about sleeping in makes sense, unless of course you’re me and there are Saturdays on which you’re expected to be at work in the morning. Yesterday was one of those Saturdays. So I pulled myself together as quickly as possible, went to pick up one of my coworkers and headed to Starbucks. At Starbucks, I realized that I had broken a purse strap on my favorite purse. It’s not a big name or anything like that, but it’s a bag that my husband bought me for Valentine’s Day because he knows I have a thing for purses, which is why it is my favorite purse. So my coworker and I struggled in line at Starbucks, figuring out what we wanted and I tried to hold my purse together, while many of my earthly possessions were spilling all over the floor. By the time we left, other patrons were looking at us like we were two Courtney Loves and it was that one MTV music awards in the 90’s when she dumped her purse all over the ground and started throwing her makeup at Madonna. We work downtown, so by the time we made it to the Shoreway, we were teetering on the brink of being late. Then we saw that the entire Eastbound Shoreway was closed. Okay, fine. The filming of Captain America was still fresh in my mind, so I started taking the route that I took for the few weeks that the Shoreway had been closed during filming. Except there was a disabled vehicle at the top of the street and, presumably since it was early and all the other drivers were still tired, no one seemed to be going around it. They all seemed to prefer queuing up behind it. Okay, fine. So we start driving down back roads and we eventually end up where we need to be. 34

But since we’re very late, it seemed that all of the free parking near our building had been gobbled up already. By the time we found a space, we were definitely late and had to walk further to get to work. Did I mention that it was raining? We got through work and decided that after everything that had gone wrong, we deserved a few appetizers and a few cocktails. No big deal, right? It would have been no big deal had we had a few cocktails. But we finished at one bar and realized that my husband and some of our friends from our gym were at a different bar. So we went there for a few more cocktails. Which wouldn’t have been that big of a deal, but instead of stopping there, we decided to go to a third bar and continue drinking for several hours. Then we chose to go to a fourth bar. Then, we finally decided we had had enough. My husband dropped our friend off at her house and took me home.

my nature. I have a very addictive personality and if I like something, I want to do it until I can’t anymore. That is precisely what I did yesterday. Apart from being a little bit embarrassed and introspective today, nothing terrible took place. There was no “rock bottom” moment, no harm done, no foul. I probably spent a little bit more money than I would have liked and I was not very kind to my body, but that’s basically it. Still though, the entire situation makes me wonder how to successfully embrace any type of moderation when you have an addictive personality. I often wonder how people eat a few bites of something delicious and then put the rest away, or how people have one beer or one cocktail and not six, or have a four ounce cup of coffee in the morning and not a pot of it.

What had started as a relaxing lunch after a somewhat stressful morning, seemingly out of nowhere, turned into roughly ten unnecessary hours of bodily abuse. I woke up this morning wondering to myself, “how did this happen?” Don’t get me wrong, nothing horrendous took place, but I still felt somewhat ashamed of the fact that I was, for whatever reason yesterday, unable to pull the plug and my “hour of relaxation,” seemingly without my knowledge or permission, turned into an almost full day of self destruction.

Does the answer lie in not starting something if you think you’re going to take it to a harmful conclusion? I hope not, because if this was the case, I’d never be able to go near another delicious food or have another cocktail as long as I lived. Does the answer lie in giving yourself a pass to do whatever you want? I don’t think this is it either, because what if you find yourself in a situation where you simply don’t pull the plug at all? Does the answer lie in realizing that every moment is a choice? I think this might be a little bit closer to the mark.

Maybe part of me thought that because the day had started off a little bit badly, it was a wash anyways? Maybe part of me needed to be reminded why I do not party like I did when I was in my early twenties? Maybe I just made a series of wrong decisions? Who knows. I think what bothered me the most is that I try really hard to maintain a level of moderation in whatever I do. Moderation, as some of you may know, is directly contrary to

Today, I choose to treat myself more gently than I did yesterday. Today, I choose to do things that will be nourishing rather than destructive. Today, I choose to give some thought to why I sometimes fly off the handle. Most of all, though, I choose not to waste too much time on guilt - because no matter what the situation, there are always better choices to be made.
