6SLGHU YHLQV DUH WKH VDPH DV YDULFRVH YHLQV Spider veins and varicose veins are caused by dysfunctional valves within the vein. Spider veins appear as a nest of veins just below the surface of the skin. They typically do not bulge above the surface. Varicose veins, however, are a sign of more signiďŹ cant venous disease and should be diagnosed and treated by a physician.

3UHJQDQF\ GRHV QRW FDXVH YDULFRVH YHLQV Pregnancy increases blood volume, hormones can cause the veins to be more pliable and external compression to the pelvic veins during pregnancy causes increased pressure inside the leg veins. These factors may contribute to the creation of varicose veins in the legs.

3URORQJHG VWDQGLQJ GRHV QRW SOD\ D UROH LQ YDULFRVH YHLQ GHYHORSPHQW Regularly spending a large part of a work day on your feet puts you at higher risk for developing varicose veins. In an attempt to reduce the strain standing causes, individuals with careers that require prolonged standing should make a point to walk regularly and perform isolated calf exercises by contracting and relaxing the calf muscles to assist the veins in “pumpingâ€? blood through the leg veins. 9DULFRVH YHLQV DUH D FRVPHWLF LVVXH DQG GR QRW QHHG WUHDWPHQW Varicose veins were previously thought of as a cosmetic condition. However, contemporary understanding of the actual disease process indicates varicose veins can ultimately progress to a more serious condition called Chronic Venous InsufďŹ ciency (CVI). If left untreated, CVI is a progressively deteriorating disease that can result in increasingly serious signs and symptoms. Leg pain, swelling, restlessness, skin damage, and ulcers are all potential symptoms of untreated venous insufďŹ ciency. As a treatable condition, varicose veins should be evaluated by a physician and various minimally-invasive treatments can be explored before the varicose veins progress. 0HQ GR QRW GHYHORS YDULFRVH YHLQV DQG &9, Men and women are both at risk to develop varicose veins and CVI. More than 40% of men develop venous disease before the age of 60. Unfortunately, the majority of men do not seek treatment until the condition worsens. While this is still able to be treated, early recognition and timely treatment are the best way to treat varicose veins and CVI. &RPSUHVVLRQ VWRFNLQJV DQG HOHYDWLQJ \RXU IHHW DUH FXUHV IRU YDULFRVH YHLQV Compression stockings provide external compression on the leg and this helps to reduce aching and swelling. This is a way to manage symptoms but does not affect the long term management of the disease in any positive way. People with varicose veins who choose to manage their symptoms with only compression stockings will need to continue to wear stockings for as long as they live. Similarly, elevating the feet above the level of the heart when lying down will relieve some pressure and swelling, but is also temporary. As soon as the patient resumes an upright posture, the beneďŹ t of elevation is lost. 9DULFRVH YHLQV GR QRW GHYHORS DIWHU WUDXPD Trauma to the legs has been shown to lead to the development of signs and symptoms of CVI and varicose veins. Injuries where signiďŹ cant swelling or bruising is produced are at times associated with varicose vein development. 2

I was not “young again” last night at the Janis Joplin show at the Cleveland Playhouse. I was young for the first time. My childhood and teen years were over protected. Girls in my family did not date, go to concerts or go to college. I managed to do all three, but not without a constant struggle to win my independence. I married a rock and roll singer whose talent was staggering. He played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar to hundreds of standing ovations! I loved that show, but most hard rock was not appealing to me. I was a borderline “elevator music” kind of chic. My poor husband was so exasperated trying to expand my musical appreciation. I just didn’t get it! He smuggled hashish into my brownies and LSD into my tea, but I was impervious. My consciousness would not raise, expand or budge! Last night, Mary Bridget Davies, who played the role of Janis Joplin, brought the house down and turned the lights on in my soul. I was deeply moved by Joplin’s song lyrics, her connection to African soul music, her passion of raging self expression, the power and strength and gutsiness of rock women. God bless them! They scream and preach and howl and emote and command the stage. They do not tiptoe like good little girls. They take over like lead dogs…bold and brave and brilliant. They are women you should know. I listen to them and I am young for the first time. I vow to gather their records and taped concerts and memoirs and to drink wildly of their gorgeous natures. This is new for me, like being born again. Every time I go to the new Cleveland Playhouse at the Allen Theater, I have this experience of metamorphosis. The theater is smart and edgy and the art presented there is utterly transforming. Go!

Is Divorce the Answer to Spousal Abuse? of choice for battered wives. Instead, most women would rather cling to the hope that

DIVORCE, BANKRUPTCY & FAMILY LAW

Most women will fight fiercely to keep their marriage intact. They have an innate moral attachment to their religious teaching and to cultural notions that good women keep their families together no matter what.

By Sandra Lee for Susan Lax “For the abused woman, divorce looms as the death knoll to all her strenuous efforts at keeping her family intact. It is also a frightening prospect as many abusers are so obsessed with controlling their wives that they would refuse a divorce even if it meant killing their wives instead. Watching the courageous women in my support group trudge week after week into the police stations and courthouses to file yet another criminal charge, another court order, another motion to keep them and their children safe from these men with whom they had once shared a home, a life, their beds, helped me to understand that divorce is never the option

our abusers will one day wake from their self-centered and destructive sleep and see us for who we really are, love us as ved and we desire to be loved we would live happily ever after. The realization that this outcome is never to be is a crushing defeatt d for the abused woman. Hope iss er what has kept her he going through the al beatings and verbal pe lashings. Hope is what has held eld her captive. Hope ope has been her only nly reason for living. ng. To lay hope asidee is utter defeat for the abused wife.” By Ginny Hunt members.aol.com/Wings2Fly/ divorce.html Most

women will fight fiercely to keep their marriage intact. They have an innate moral attachment to their religious teaching and to cultural notions that good women keep their families together no matter what. It is interesting to note that the Bible regularly deplores violence and abuse, especially of those weaker and in less of a position to defend themselves. The state in which a battered woman lives daily can be accurately described as a state of oppression. Biblically,

These words paint an accurate picture of what happens to the victim of abuse. So, while many think the Bible is virtually silent on the topic of domestic violence, it isn’t. In fact it has much to say. It repetitively chastises a spouse’s treacherous manner against his wife. IS DIVORCE THE ANSWER TO SPOUSAL ABUSE? Such a decision is a highly personal one but every woman needs to know that she is in no way morally bound to keep herself or her children in an abusive situation. However, she must also note that 75% of all the domestic homicides against women occur during the time when the victim is

in the process of leaving her abuser. She must select a competent divorce attorney who has experience in family law and domestic violence cases. Domestic violence cases raise a host of complicating circumstances which need to be dealt with by a compassionate and skilled attorney. Hiring the right attorney can make all the difference. Here are some questions to ask: • •

And so it may be necessary for an abused woman to file for and secure a divorce from her abusive husband. In doing so, she is participating not in sin but in breaking the yoke of bondage and oppression upon herself and her children. In fact, to stay and remain a victim of the abuser’s violence would be a kind of participation in his sin, if only by remaining his victim. Ultimately, the decision remains with the abused woman and it is one that should be free from judgment from those she needs to support her in her stance against oppression – including her religious community.

Rainmaker Consulting Hope is not a strategy and everyone is not your target market. Emily’s biggest role model was her father, Owen. Owen was also an entrepreneur, who shared ownership in a local manufacturing company. All her life, Emily was interested in her father’s career and what made him successful. Owen was a brilliant salesman and marketer and it was two years after his passing when the opportunity presented itself for her to go out on her own.

Emily Kelly In a nutshell, Rainmaker Consulting was born as a result of a demand for local marketing services “a la carte”. CEO, Emily Kelly, had been building a brand as a marketing director for a local CPA firm when clients started asking for her help with their social media, marketing plans and websites. “The rest of the story” is that Emily comes from a long line of entrepreneurs on both sides of her family … entrepreneurs that started the Van Roy Coffee Company, the Pfitzenmaier and Jablonski engineering firm, The Fine Line clothier, and many more. This family legacy of entrepreneurs fuels Emily’s passion for the small business owner and their struggle to wear “all the hats” and “beat the odds” to be successful in a very competitive environment. Emily believes in the “mom and pops” and truly wants to see them succeed. One client has said, “The focus and attention to detail Emily puts into her work with each individual client sets her above others in her field. She understands that there is no mold to achieving success with every individual. You must structure each client’s marketing strategy differently to get the best results … Emily is a very driven individual. Not only does she want to succeed in her business, she wants that success to rub off with everyone she decides to have a work relationship with.” And it’s true.

In addition to her Bachelor of Business Administration (Marketing) from Ohio University, and over a decade of demonstrated success in fundraising, direct sales, industrial sales and professional services marketing, she had made great connections in the community through the local chambers and she felt she was ready to take the leap of faith. In the beginning, Emily did her research on existing marketing and sales coaching companies. She didn’t want to come into the marketplace competing with other firms. She wanted to collaborate with them, and to provide a service that met a need that was not being addressed in the marketplace. She realized that there were many excellent ad agencies, web design companies, printers and graphic designers available to help tackle a task, but few and far between are those who will help you execute a brand strategy … affordably. She couldn’t find a company locally that would help you define your target market and deliver a consistent message in order to increase your revenue and visibility, so she set out to help the local community create a better economy one small business at a time. Emily’s target market is the small business owner who is not yet in a place in their business to hire a full time staff person, or a large agency, but who needs help executing an effective marketing plan, or who has a special project and needs some insight, someone who needs advice in order to stretch their marketing dollars for the greatest return on investment so that they can get back to doing whatever it is that they do best. Emily comes alongside these companies to craft a brand strategy that is attainable, measurable, and realistic, and

www.summitcountywomensjournal.com

to help them implement that strategy with their existing resources and/or the resources she brings to the table through her broad network of contacts. Emily sticks to what she knows best – strategy, and she partners with marketing companies whose expertise is different than her own to bring the very best benefit to the client’s bottom line objectives and in order to help those small businesses in her industry succeed as well. That means that no job is too big for Rainmaker, and no job is too small either. Since its inception in 2011, Rainmaker has helped over 40 companies with their sales and marketing strategies. Emily has been asked to speak to the Center for Principled Family Advocacy, Ohio Society of CPAs, Greater Akron Chamber Knowledgeable Network of Women, Greater Akron Business Breakfast, Women’s Network, and Working Women Connection, among others. She has taught classes on social media, vision casting and goal setting, coached direct sales teams, and developed her very own course called “Small Business Marketing 101” designed to equip small business owners with a comprehensive look at their brand strategy in person, on land, in print and online. The old adage says, “Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime,” and this class was engineered to do just that. She describes marketing as a fishing trip and teaches attendees how to define who they are “fishing for” and how to go about it with the greatest success. You can learn more about Emily and Rainmaker by going to her “splash page”, which includes links to all her social media platforms, blog, interviews, slide shows and videos: about.me/emilykelly. The heart and soul of Rainmaker is helping people find what it is that they were put on this earth to do, and to help them do it well, and within their budget. If you need assistance getting back to what it is that you do best, she can be reached by phone at 330-603-0086 or by email at Emily@EMK-TheRainmaker.com.

Truth as I Perceive It Even the “Lion-hearted Feel Like Giving Up at Times! By Gloria A. Williams Lions are powerful mammals known to be Kings of the Jungle. They possess enormous strength and a magnificent beauty. Lions both intrigue and captivate me! They are such icons of bravery that to be called lion-hearted is to be perceived as a person of such courage that you can plow through the most stressing life situations without fear or sadness. The truth, however, has brought me to a place of acceptance that even the lion-hearted feel like giving up at times. Yes, it’s true; the strong, spiritually planted who may maintain a positive posture in the face of all kind of adversities, who may manage to find value in the mundane, read the Bible consistently, pray without ceasing or cling to some other form of comfort, yes, even this poised person is vulnerable to despondency. I know because I became this person. I think no one was more surprised than me to watch as I slowly withdrew from the people I love and the life I enjoy. A number of disheartening situations occurring gradually over time wore away my faith, physical strength, and emotional well being. One

of the most heart-breaking things ever expressed to me by someone of important significance was that I was a “non-person. Wow!!! Whoever said “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me was terribly, terribly wrong! Words do harm and their wounds bitterly assault the vulnerability of the soul. Words are spiritual. Proverb 12:18 says “reckless words pierce like a sword. Words have within them the power to pierce the heart hemorrhaging blood that stains the soul so severely that even time cannot wash away the stains. Physical wounds eventually heal, but wounds of the soul kill the spirit! My soul had been violently attacked by one who was suppose to love. What lion-hearted person wouldn’t feel like giving up? Mysteriously, however, the dark cloud eventually lifted. Skies for me returned to blue and joy became my faithful companion again rather than a distant memory. Yet, in all honesty, I cannot say I emerged the same person. Someone different ascended from the depths of darkness and depression – a wiser, stronger woman full of passion, full of hope. No situation or abusively spoken words, regardless how heartwrenching or cruel, should have the power to kill

Adult Children Caring for Aging Parents Face Role Reversal American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) found that an estimated 22.4 million U.S. households, nearly 1 in 4 are providing care to someone age 50 or older or have provided care within the last 12 months. As these family caregivers have discovered, it takes a lot of time, energy and patience to care for an aging loved one, and often it can seem like all of these attributes are in short supply. It’s not surprising, then, that guilt coupled with resentment are prevalent emotions among family caregivers. A caregiver’s life can be turned upside down. Despite the fact that they love their parents, caring for a parent is a big responsibility that affects the whole family. Plans for the immediate future go out the window. Schedules that were already jam packed and complicated need reworked. Children

by Jodi Wood RN BSN President Visiting Angels of Greater Akron, OH The catch phrase says it all‌ adult children who are caring for their parents while also raising their own family are known as “the sandwich generationâ€?. These family caregivers find themselves pulled in many directions, caring for a parent, raising their children, and often holding down a job as well. On top of all of this, adult caregivers are thrust into the awkward and often unwanted position of feeling like they are parenting their own parents. It can be unsettling to find yourself in this role. This reversal in the parenting role can give rise to stress for both parents and caregivers. A recent survey by the National Alliance for Care Giving and the

may resent the new demands for their parents’ time and attention. With these added stressors, experts emphasize the importance of caretakers looking after their own physical and emotional health. The old adage is true. “You can’t take care of someone else without taking care of yourself first. This involves getting help from others, whether it is from siblings, a support group, or a home care service. The staff at Visiting Angels understands this need. The company provides screened and trained caregivers, who go into clients’ homes to offer ambulation assistance, personal care, medication reminders, companionship, do light housekeeping, run errands, prepare meals, go shopping, and monitor safety- all services that can provide respite for the families dealing with the care of a loved one. Choosing the Right Wig for You Finding the right wig and style could leave you frustrated and confused. There is so much to consider. What color, length, or texture, do I want curly or straight hair? Should it be synthetic or human hair? Buying a wig for medically induced hair loss is totally different than buying a wig for the adventure of changing your look. In the 1970’s, women often had to put up with itchy, heavy, obviously synthetic wigs if they hoped to cover up during chemotherapy treatments. But now the options are so lifelike and diverse that choosing a wig is exciting! Let’s keep it simple. Step 1. What is your head size? Wigs come in several sizes, petite, average, and large. Average is about 22 inches in circumference. In general, if you have trouble finding hats big enough, you might need a large size wig. If hats are always too big, you might need a petite size wig. Step 2. What style best fits the shape of your face?

Sentoo Wig Suki

Most women who need a wig because of hair loss just want to look normal. Try on wigs that are a little longer than the length you are used to, so that your wig stylist can

design the wig to fit your face. Don’t worry when your wig looks much too thick for you. Wigs are made with 10% to 30% more hair than you need and must be aerated to make them look natural. This allows your stylist to thin and trim to get the right style. Step 3. What color is best for my skin tone? You probably already know what colors you like in your hair. A wig with multiple shades will look more natural than a solid color. Again, your wig stylist will show you a variety of colors to choose from. A human hair wig can be tinted if you don’t like the color, however, don’t try to lighten it. You will cause hair loss and damage to the wig by using any bleaching product. The color of synthetic hair cannot be changed. Step 4. What kind of wig /cap do I need? The next thing to consider is what type of wig suits you best. If you need full coverage due to hair loss or you want to try a different color or style altogether, then you want to choose a full wig. If you want a solution for thin hair, and want to add fullness or additional volume, length or curl, then try a top piece. The top piece blends into your own hair to look very natural. Step 5. What’s best for me: synthetic or human hair? If you intend to wear the wig daily, then you will want to choose a higher quality wig that is very comfortable and has a cap that allows for good air

circulation. A good wig will also have tape areas on the front, sides and nape where you can use toupee tape to secure it on. The next thing to consider is how you plan to style the wig. Sentoo Wig Yama Human hair offers the ability to color, curl or perm the wig. It is soft and feels the most natural. A human hair wig needs more maintenance. Just like natural hair, it will react to humidity, rain, hot sun, etc, and need styling often. Human hair wigs are also more expensive than synthetic. Synthetic wigs require little styling, although the style is set and not very easy to change. There is a new type of synthetic hair that has the best features of both human and synthetic hair. It mimics human hair and can be styled like human hair but retains its body and shape like synthetic hair. We recommend that you take your wig to a professional wig stylist. While wearing your wig, the stylist can cut, trim and even thin your wig to make it look like your own. But no matter where you purchase your wig, if you want to achieve the most natural look, it’s good to be informed and really understand the look you’re going for, and shop accordingly.

Chemotherapy and Hair Loss What to expect Most people take their hair for granted until they are faced with losing it from chemotherapy treatments. A diagnosis of cancer is devastating to anyone and suffering through effects of chemotherapy is a difficult road to being well again. However, both men and women report hair loss as one of the side effects they dread most after being diagnosed with cancer. Whether or not you have hair loss from your chemotherapy depends mostly on the type and dose of medication you receive. All the side effects from chemotherapy can be grueling and take a toll on you physically, emotionally and mentally. Maintaining a good body image is important to your health and when you look good,, you do feel better! If hair loss is a side effect of your treatment, your first indication will be excess shedding. Hair usually begins falling out two to three weeks after your first treatment. It could fall

out very quickly in clumps or gradually. It is common for your scalp to feel tender. Many women will opt to shave their heads at the first sign of hair loss rather than allowing it to shed for a week or so until it is all gone. Coping with Hair Loss There are many choices to cope with chemo related hair loss. Some women are self confident enough to go without head coverings, however, most women prefer to wear a wig similar to their usual style. Hats, head scarves and turbans are popular as well. Fortunately, fake looking wigs are a thing of the past. Technology has advanced considerably. Wigs can look natural and be comfortable. Hair prostheses are the latest advancement in replacing lost hair. They are custom made to meet the specific needs of the hair loss patient. It will take several weeks to get your custom made wig after you order it, so you will need to go to your wig stylist as soon as you can. Wigs and prosthetic hair systems can be a tax deduction and sometimes covered by insurance. Contact your health insurance company to find out. The American Cancer Society can be very helpful in finding free wig programs or can help offset the cost. What should I do after my hair falls out? • Protect your head from the sun. If you choose to not wear a wig, use sunscreen on any exposed scalp or wear a hat when you are outside.

Sentoo Wig

• Protect your head from the cold. Wear a hat or scarf.

• Use a good moisturizer on your scalp. • Learn to use makeup to enhance your facial features and brighten your skin When will my hair grow back? Most likely your hair will start to grow back in 2 to 4 months after c h e m o t h e r a p y. Sometimes your new hair can be curlier or straighter - or even a different color. Often it will Sentoo Wig Tani grow back with a lot more gray than before you lost it. In time, it will probably go back to it’s normal texture. It can also start growing back in some areas, often the back and nape areas, before it starts growing back on the top and front. Hair grows about a ½ inch each month so it could take a year for short styles to grow in and two years to get longer hair back. If you want longer hair sooner, hair extensions are an option. When your hair is four inches on top you can get extensions to lengthen it to your shoulders. What to do when your hair is growing back? When your hair is an inch or so long, come to The Hair Specialists for a free consultation. We would like to help you through the growing process including scalp treatments to encourage hair growth, supplements that support hair growth and hair pieces that can add volume while you hair grows.

• Try wearing a soft scarf when you sleep.

Grace School of Small Wonders By Gloria A. Williams The Grace School of Small Wonders was founded in 2012 by Gloria A. Williams and named by her daughter, Nikia L. Bridges, Doctor of Audiology, Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. The vision placed in Gloria’s heart was to develop a youth prevention program with a spiritual focus targeting at risk little girls ages 3 to 6. Some of the social issues the program will address are etiquette, child sexual abuse, bullying, promiscuity versus abstinence, date rape, self-esteem, self worth, eating disorders, nutrition/health and wellness, spiritual awareness, prayer, and faith. The program for the school was founded upon the premises that children need to be taught to be respectful of self, respectful of others, and respectful

of God’s created world. Teaching children self-discipline early and helping them understand the consequences to each choice made and the consequences for violating boundaries, will help them develop the needed critical thinking skills to make better choices for their own lives. This will also help the child improve processing the unavoidable life events of loss and hardship. By enabling the child to develop an inner belief system of spirituality rooted in something bigger than the child, it is believed the child will understand the world better, their value and role in the world, and develop a mindset of servanthood rather than a mind-set of self-centeredness. Through selfempowerment, the child’s ability to protect herself from sexual predators who may be individuals of trust, someone in her own family

or social environment, will also be improved. The ultimate objective of the Grace School of Small Wonders is to re-establish etiquette and self-empowerment within little girls helping them understand their value and worth is not in the external but in who they are internally. Developing that inner person on spirituality and a set of core values is the key. It is the founder’s theory that in developing this inner belief system early in the hearts and minds of little girls, it will be the catalyst from which they live and the inner compass guiding their attitudes and life choices throughout adulthood. A little girl will then grow into an empowered woman first valuing herself and then contributing in great measure to her surrounding communities. Classes are 6-week intervals Tuesday through Thursday starting

in September with class sizes limited to six (6) students per class per session. Each day is designated for a targeted age group. While the Grace School of Small Wonders is a grassroots project starting in Fairlawn, Ohio, the vision for the school is global. It is the founder’s vision the Grace School of Small Wonders will eventually be developed on continents around the world. For registration, please call Gloria A. Williams (330) 6700125.

Experience Superior Patient Care and Convenience at Quest Diagnostics

At Quest Diagnostics, our first responsibility is the patient. One of the primary ways we deliver superior patient care is by emphasizing stringent quality standards in our nationwide network of more than 2,000 Patient Service Centers, many in Northeast Ohio. These standards touch every aspect of our operations, from how we interact with patients, to how we minimize waiting room time, to how we reduce patient “anxiety time” by delivering fast, reliable results. For example, our phlebotomists adhere to a well-defined code of conduct that outlines the steps they must follow to maintain technical excellence throughout the process of drawing blood.

We perform testing on more than half a million patient samples every day. And behind each one is a human being-someone waiting, often anxiously, for answers about their health that could determine their prospects for the future. This profound responsibility inspires everyone at Quest Diagnostics to treat our patients as if they were members of our own families. Moreover, it motivates us to treat all patients with the compassion and extraordinary care they deserve. Quest Diagnostics is the leading provider of diagnostic testing, information and services that patients and doctors need to make better healthcare decisions.

ProtectIfYourself From It Sounds TooCrime Good To Be True... By Sherri Bevan Walsh Summit County Prosecutor Finding scam victims is easy for criminals. They prey on people who are trusting or eager for a solution to a problem – or both. For example, one scam that hit Summit County this summer takes advantage of people who are struggling to pay their bills. Thousands of people across the country have given Social Security numbers and other personal identification information to strangers in the belief that President Obama will pay one household bill for every family in America. It is difficult for those who have never fallen for a scam to understand how someone would willingly pay money to collect a prize or lose their savings to a fraudulent investor. Being taken advantage of by an unscrupulous con artist doesn’t equate to stupidity. These criminals know that, although plenty of

people believe that if something sounds too good to be true it probably is, there are others out there who won’t fully think through their actions. Unfortunately, senior citizens are often the target of and fall victim to scams. Seniors tend to have assets, are more likely to be suffering the mental effects of age and are reluctant to report a crime of this nature at the risk of sounding foolish and incapable. But no matter how old you are, there is always the potential of being targeted. And the scams are not limited to doorto-door solicitations and the mail. Most of the common scams I’ve heard about lately involve emails, texts and social media postings.

• Don’t pay for free prizes. It is illegal for companies to charge you a tax on winnings. • Thoroughly research any new company with which you want to conduct business. • Be wary of businesses that use a post office box but do not provide a physical address. • Always ask for information in writing. • Don’t make spur-of-the-moment decisions. Legitimate businesses will not hassle you about taking time to consider an offer.

There are many resources available to help you if you think you were targeted by a scam. The Better Business Bureau and the Office of Consumer Affairs both exist to help residents determine whether a business or charity is real or part of a scam. And my office can help you take action if you fell prey to a con artist. If you’d like Prosecutor Walsh to speak to your organization about reducing your likelihood of becoming a victim of crime, please call Lisa Holdt at (330) 643-2800.

The best way to avoid falling for a scam is to have a healthy dose of skepticism. Here are some practical tips on how to avoid becoming the next scam victim: • Never pay for services until they are rendered to your satisfaction.

What is the App “Circle of 6? In the June/July 2012 issue of this Journal, I discussed dating violence and its effects on teens. In this issue, I want to go high tech and discuss the application of the Circle of 6.

JOHN D. FERRERO Stark County Prosecuting Attorney Stark County Prosecutor’s Office 110 Central Plaza South Suite 510 Canton, Ohio 44702 Phone: 330-451-7897

Circle of 6 is an iPhone app for students and their friends to stay close, safe and prevent violence before it happens. Staying connected to a small group of people is critical to keeping students and friends informed and safe. Circle of 6 is a mobile app that makes it quick and easy to reach your circle and let them know where you are and what you need. It’s a fast, easy-to-use and a secure way to look out for each other. The design is simple. It takes two touches to get help, so no fumbling or digging around for the right number. Icons are used to represent actions so that no one can tell what you are doing if they see your phone. The design ensures safety, speed and privacy. GPS is integrated therein (using Google maps) and is only activated by you and sent to your own Circle of 6.

The app currently works on iPhones. The next generation will expand to multiple devices and operating systems such as Droids, Blackberries, etc. The app sends out three preprogrammed short message service (SMS) with two quick taps: • Select the car icon for the message “Come and get me. I need help getting home safely.â€? GPS coordinates are given. • Tap the telephone and up comes the message “Call me and pretend you need me. I need an interruption.â€? • A third icon, a speech bubble, activates “I’m looking up information about healthy relationships and respect. Just letting you know.â€?

In a critical situations, there’s an exclamation point that connects to pre-programmed national hotlines or the user can customize a local emergency number such as campus police. The following were instrumental in the app’s design: Deb Levine, Exec. Director and Founder of ISIS, a non-profit organization using social and mobile media for sexual and reproductive health, and the development of healthy relationships. www. isis-inc.org And, Nancy Schwartzman, a nationally recognized documentary filmmaker and director of “The Line and “xoxosms. She is the Founder and Executive Director of The Line Campaign, a movement that creates original media to inspire action and empowers young leaders to end sexual violence. www.whereisyourline.org

Moving Day By T.M. Boling Moving is one of life’s more stressful events, which makes choosing the right company to assist you a very, very important decision. Trust me when I tell you – choose carefully, choose Hammond Movers. This is a family business built on a solid foundation of honesty, reliability, professionalism, and satisfied customers. family recently found ourselves in the unfortunate position of having to move on short notice, and sadly, amidst the passing of one of our dear parents. A family friend recommended Lenora and Dave at Hammond Movers and after having compared their rates, customer service policies, and client reviews, we hired them. This staff was nothing but professional from the moment I called to inquire about rates and availability, to the closing of the truck door after the last load of a 2 day move. They accommodated a last minute, but necessary, change in dates graciously. They showed up on time, prepared for an 8 hour day, but stayed on for a 10 hour day. And then they came back for another 10 hours of back breaking work the second day. No matter how many times I asked for

a box to be relocated, or a couch to be moved to a different corner of the room, I never experienced a complaint, cross word, or sideward glance. The three man team sent to us conducted themselves like gentleman, and for two days, they treated our family like they were helping their best friend move. They made sure to lay cloth on clean carpets and wear shoe covers where appropriate. They carefully tended to our precious items, and gently maneuvered large furniture so as not to damage the furniture or walls, woodwork or floors. They followed instructions on boxes so that each one was where I needed it to be when I began to unpack. It was the attention to these details that made a difficult move easier for us. But the best part was yet to come. At the end of the second day my husband and I dragged out tired souls to a bedroom where we expected to collapse onto a set of mattresses

on the floor. Really, assembling the bed and locating the box of linens could wait for tomorrow. To our delight, Hammond Movers had the bed assembled…with our box of linens placed right on top. Was I grateful? Absolutely! Did I sleep well knowing I had chosen the best movers in Northeast Ohio? You bet! Let me tell you this…I have hired many service providers in my 23 years as a homeowner; carpet cleaners, appliance repairman, window installers, painters, landscapers… you name it. Some have been good, and some have been a dis-

appointment. But Hammond Movers stands out amongst them all and proved to me that there are still companies out there that believe in providing their customers superior service, at a fair price, delivered honorably, with a smile. Have a move in your future? Don’t stress, call Lenora and Dave at Hammond Movers and tell them you’d like their family to help your family make this experience a wonderful beginning to the next chapter in your life. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Bullying By Sarah Rosenberger, Teen Librarian Akron-Summit County Public Library Bullying isn’t a new problem, but in recent years, social networking has given bullies new ways to hurt their victims and made it easier to share the victims’ humiliation with wider audiences. YouTube videos of bullying regularly receive tens of thousands of hits. Online hate groups, where classmates take turns posting cruel comments about someone, are a regular occurrence. Targets of bullies may be chosen at random or they may be chosen because of race, sexual orientation or disability, among others.

S

Most teens who are bullied don’t have thoughts of suicide. But, studies show that teens who are bullied can be up to 5 times as likely to think about or attempt suicide as other teens. Bullying alone is not the cause. Many issues can contribute to suicide risk, including depression, problems at home, and a history of trauma. Persistent bullying can lead to feelings of rejection, isolation and despair as well as anxiety and depression which, in turn, can contribute to thoughts of suicide. Teens who bully others also have an increased risk of suicide, making this an issue that requires intervention on multiple levels.

Studies show that an adult is notified in only about a third of bullying cases. Kids don’t tell adults for many reasons like humiliation, fear of being rejected or backlash from the bully so it is important to look for warning signs that a teen is being bullied. If or someone you know is being bullied, help is available. The Akron-Summit County Public Library maintains a site with links to organizations that support victimized teens, information for parents, teachers and others who work with youth and a comprehensive book list at http://ascplteens.akronlibrary.org/

anti-bullying/. The website http://www.stopbullying. gov/ is an excellent source for how to deal with bullying. If you are looking for a book to recommend to a bullied teen, try Dear Bully, (Megan Kelley Hall and Carrie Jones, eds). that victims of bullying are not alone. If you or someone you know is in crisis, the Lifeline is available 24/7 at (800) 273-TALK (8255). If you are interested in becoming a part of the Summit County Suicide Prevention Coalition, call (330) 762-3500 or email at preventsuicide@ admboard.org.

What Indiana Jones Taught Me By Amanda E. van Brakle

I have mixed feelings about Harrison Ford. First of all, I grew up (avidly) watching the Indiana Jones movies, so I saw him as this sort of outlaw fatherfigure. Secondly, the dude’s handsome. Thirdly (and perhaps most creeplily of all), the dude bears a striking resemblance to my own father. My sisters and I all have weird crush-type things on Harrison Ford and the three of us all feel really yucky about that. Weird feelings aside, but somewhat appropriately, the Indiana Jones movies taught me about moral ambiguity. Urban dictionary defines moral ambiguity as, “a lack of clarity in ethical decision making.” Like in Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark when Indiana Jones threatens to blow up the Ark of the Covenant with a grenade launcher in order to get it out of the Nazi’s clutches. Supposing that his only two options are to blow up the Ark or to let the Nazi’s have it, regardless of which course of action he chooses, he will be doing something morally “wrong.” If he chooses to blow up the Ark, not only is he possibly going to destroy other human lives in the process (though in the movie, Nazi lives are portrayed as substantially less valuable than non-Nazi lives), but he is also going to blow up the Ark of the Covenant (the material proof of the agreement between Moses and the Old Testament God). If he chooses not to blow up the Ark, he runs the risk of it staying in the wrong hands, possibly leading to the death and destruction of thousands and possibly millions of other living persons. Ultimately, (spoiler alert!) he doesn’t blow up the Ark. Instead, the plot runs its course and the Nazis end up destroying themselves with their own hubris. I’m not going to go into a detailed explanation of how this happens (even though I kind of want to). Speaking as an Indiana Jones enthusiast, I would strongly encourage you to watch the movie yourself. Moral ambiguity has shown examples of itself in people’s reactions to the recent shooting at To advertise call 440-390-8778 or email brandy717@cox.net

a Colorado movie theater as well. I’ve found that, especially in the months leading up to a presidential election, that people will use anything they can get their hands on in order to make a point about their political leanings being correct (and, of course, the “other guy” being wrong). I’ve heard people reacting to this senseless act of violence in a number of different ways. For instance, a lot of people argue that if everyone simply had their concealed carry permit (and were packing during that particular movie), someone would have just killed the shooter before he had a chance to do so much damage. But then wouldn’t that vigilante be taking the life of a human being themselves? Then again, isn’t it better to prevent several murders even if that means committing one? Where is the line? I’ve also heard people going as far as to blame entire groups of people for the actions of one person. Some people blame the Occupy Wall Street movement. Some people are blaming the “liberal media” (sidebar: I still can’t figure out who the “liberal media” refers to – it seems to refer to anyone who makes a less-than-conservative point in a public forum, but I digress). Some people are blaming Tea Partiers and the conservatives, which seems equally inaccurate to me. I’ve heard a few folks suggest that an individual is capable of making his / her own choices and people should be held accountable for their own actions. This seems closer to the mark to me. For some reason, the way people have reacted to this particular event has really upset me. Maybe because too few people seem to be recognizing that those who are grieving the loss of their loved ones might want comfort absent of a political or social agenda. Maybe because too many people are hijacking the pain of others in order to attempt to show the world how “right” they are. And maybe I’m a hypocrite for making my own point about humanity in this article and using one particular tragedy as an example. I don’t know. The situation itself is somewhat ambiguous.

Special Interest

One thing of which I am relatively certain is this: We are living in a very uncertain world and we are losing sight of our own humanity. Something tragic happens and human lives are lost and rather than recognizing that, we rush to make it “about” something else. We rush to lay blame, we rush to side with someone or something and we further entrench ourselves into this sense of staunch individualism which is starting to prevent us from recognizing each other as similar. As human. In the end, I just feel frustrated and sometimes as though there is nothing I can do about any of it. Sometimes it seems as though it is pointless to try to figure out how to be loving and compassionate even in terrible situations, because sometimes it seems like in a sea of millions of angry, frightened people, there are a serious minority of equally angry and frightened people who want to do whatever they can in order to make the world a more compassionate place. When we decide to remain at each other’s throats rather than finding ways to coexist, I feel like we all lose. But, as another Indiana Jones movie taught me, loss isn’t always permanent. There is a scene at the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in which the viewer gets to meet Indiana Jones as a teenager. While on a boy scout trip, he catches a band of grave robbers stealing artifacts. Since Indiana believes that these artifacts “belong in a museum” rather than on the black market, he takes it upon himself to steal these artifacts back from the grave robbers. Young Indiana calls the sheriff to tell him what happened, only to find out that the sheriff had been bought off by the grave robbers. As a newly disillusioned Indiana Jones begrudgingly hands the artifacts back to the thieves, their leader says something to young Indiana which, in the plotline, is supposed to have a hand in molding his character: “You lost today, kid. It doesn’t mean you have to like it.”

As little girls, didn’t we all want a horsey when we were growing up? Well, I got mine, plus 397 others!

They say, “Be careful what you wish for! I’m sure you’ve all heard that saying. When I was seven years old, I wished for a pony. My dad often promised he’d buy me one, but growing up in the city of Barberton, it was an empty promise. Finally, when I was 37 years old, I got my wish - a pony (along with a big Thoroughbred and a baby Belgian draft horse). Although it wasn’t until I was an adult that I got my first pony, I was probably as excited at age 37 as I would have been at age seven. In 2000, the same year I got my first pony, I started Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary and began my work with abused, neglected and abandoned horses and farm animals. I quickly got a crash course in horse care and equine health as the abuse cases began pouring in. Over the past 12 years I personally helped rescue, rehabilitate and/or place nearly 400 horses. My wish went wild and though I didn’t “own the horses, each one of them touched my life in a very profound way, and all taught me very valuable lessons. My work with abused horses and farm animals has been very rewarding over the years. While my wish for a horse has been fulfilled many times over, I often wonder how many women out there didn’t get the shiny black pony or the big, beautiful brown and white paint horse that they had always dreamed about? Please don’t let that dream die. 28

The Women’s Journals™ Summit – Portage – Stark

I would like to extend an invitation for you to visit Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary and meet the rescued animals in person. See which horse comes up and nuzzles your hair or looks you right in the eye and patiently waits for you to wander over for a hug. Which one lets you run your fingers through their soft mane or sticks their tongue out at you when you scratch their neck? Can sponsoring a rescued horse fill the void of that pony you didn’t get when you were growing up? Which one of them will you bond with? Hear their stories, celebrate their recovery, and help us care for them while they wait, hopeful that we will find them a permanent, loving home. All the rescued horses need sponsors. The expense to rehab an abused horse is rather impressive. Check out some of the information here, send in a donation, and get 4 free tickets to visit the sanctuary and meet some really great horses who need a monthly sponsor. If you’re like me, you’ll fall in love with at least one. So 12 years later, even though I no longer have my pony, I do have my crazy Standardbred, Barney, the love of my life. Hopefully you’ll find the love of your life, too, with big ears and kind brown eyes and warm breath. Hope to see you when you come out for a visit, and thanks for your support of the work of Happy Trails!

In Harms’ Way

By: Sharon Harms Harms & Associates, Certified Public Accountant

I took some criticism for my comments in last issue. Seems my thoughts were interpreted as “discrediting” my profession as a CPA. FAR FROM IT! I am proud to be a CPA and I believe in our ethics, education, and integrity. My point was: FIND THE GOOD ONES! My remarks were directed at those accountants that, by their actions, do discredit the profession. As business owners, I want you to understand the difference and be able to distinguish the good CPAs. You should receive accuracy, timeliness, answers to your questions, a “partner” in the success of your

business. By having the knowledge of what an ethical, intelligent, and caring CPA looks like, you will be kept out of harm’s way. Sharon A. Harms, CPA, MBA Harms and Associates, Certified Public Accountant You can email Sharon at harmscpa@gmail.com or call/ text to 330-607-0664
