“An

to Lean On”

“How Do I Know if My Aging Parent Needs Help?” When we are around our parents, we may still see them as the invincible adult of our childhood; the commander of our day, the primary caregiver and disciplinarian. However, if your visits home are few and far between due to geography, you may have begun to notice the fact that your folks don’t get around as well as they used to. “Should I be concerned?” “Is it time for assisted living? Chances are your Mom and Dad may need a little helping hand around the house. “What should I look for?”

Pictured from right are Jodi Wood RN BSN President, Janelle Pakan RN Community Liaison, Nicki Zepernick Human Resources and Scheduling, and Stefanie Gainer Office Manager/ Accounting

There are a few signs that can indicate a need for assistance; not necessarily a big move, but perhaps the occasional in home help. •

Confusion and forgetfulness

Poor appetite, not eating regularly or an unbalanced diet

Mismanagement of their medication (more on this below)

This is a common concern among aging adults and caregivers of seniors. Whether the medication is for an on-going condition like high cholesterol or a temporary drug due to a recent illness or injury, keeping track of medication accurately is challenging.

Kitchen mishaps like leaving the tea pot on to boil or the heat on under an empty pan

To make matters worse, Medicare doesn’t cover prescription set-up or medication management.

Walking in their neighborhood and becoming disoriented

Unsafe driving habits

Lonely, depressed

History of falling (More on this below)

So where do you turn? Visiting Angels in Akron is offering a service that will help get you setup and even keep your medicines managed going forward. Once a month we visit you or your parent and:

Old age sneaks up on us all and your parents may appear perfectly healthy and yet still need a little bit of assistance.

Pick up new or updated RXs from pharmacy

Put together pills in pill boxes

“Did I Remember to Take My Pills Today?”

Education you or your parent on the medication system

Did you know mismanagement of medication is one of the leading causes of hospital readmission and even death in older adults?

Answer questions throughout the month from client or their caregiver/family member

The older we get, the more medication, vitamins, and other preventative pills we seem to require. Some are twice a day, others are with meals, still others are once a day at the same time each day.

Conduct on-going discussions with doctors on your behalf

Management medicine changes or additions

If I can’t remember where I put my car keys, how will I ever manage my medication?

Some of the Visiting Angels of Akron employees, including owner Jodi Wood, RN, are registered nurses and are also certified to review medications and be aware of any possible interactions between medicines. We can come in once for an initial medication set-up or come back on a regular basis thus relieving you from the stress of ensuring your loved one’s medication is accurately managed. Medication is meant to help keep us healthy but if, through poor medication management, we don’t take our pills when we need to, they can have an adverse effect. “My mom is falling and doesn’t think it is a big deal… luckily she hasn’t hurt herself…yet”

Did you know that falls are the second leading cause of accidental death in the United States and 75% of these falls occur in older adults? Eight Tips to Reduce the Risk of Falling Here are eight tips to help reduce the likelihood that you or your loved one will experience a fall in your home: Dress appropriately. Rubber-soled shoes offer the best traction when walking across a variety of surfaces. The days of spiked heels and slippery dress shoes are over. Create a fall-safe environment. De-clutter your rooms and walkways, reduce the number of throw rugs and make sure that frequently used items in the kitchen and bath are on the shelves that can be reached without a step stool. Check your medication. It may be time to have a professional examine your medications to see if they cause dizziness or a propensity to an equilibrium problem. Remember that Visiting Angels offers a Medication Management program. Use assistance devices. Handrails, bathmats, raised commode seats, shower handles, grabbing poles, canes, and walkers are all helpful tools that reduce the likelihood that you’ll have a fall in your home. Consider saying no. Say no to carrying the laundry up and down the basement stairs. Say no to dragging the 50 pound bag of dog food in from the garage. No to taking the trash to the curb on icy winter days. It is far better to delegate than recover from a nasty fall. Ask for help. Along with saying no comes a request for help. You might think that you don’t want to be a burden, but people are longing to assist. You have been there for decades offering your help. Why not give someone else a chance? Slow down. If you miss the phone on the first ring – no worries. If it was important, they will call back. Avoid rushing and hurrying. Often falls happen when we aren’t paying attention to what we are doing because we are in a hurry. “I am so busy with my job, my kids and taking care of the house… I am exhausted, but I know that mom really needs me… I feel so guilty!” 3 Ways to Care for the Caregiver Are you so bogged down with the day-to-day responsibilities of caring for your loved one, your home and your job that you fail to take care of yourself? Studies have shown that being a caregiver, particularly those in the middle of caring for an aging parent and their own children suffer from To advertise call 440-390-8778 or email brandy717@cox.net

depression, lack of energy, anger, weight gain and a feeling of isolation. In an article about Caregiver Burnout on WebMd, the author has this to say: Don’t forget about yourself because you’re too busy caring for someone else. Remember, taking care of yourself is not a luxury; it is an absolute necessity if you’re going to be an effective caregiver. Recognizing burnout and doing something about it are two different things. Here are three tips that can help you ensure that you are also receiving the care you need so that you are adequately prepared to assist your aging parents: Make time for yourself. Put yourself on the calendar. Even just an hour of “me” time can make the difference in your levels of stress and ability to handle challenging situations. Make time for a bubble bath, a movie or just an hour to sit and read your favorite novel. Scheduling these mini vacations help to rejuvenate and replenish your personal energy. Ask for help. Don’t try to do everything yourself. Ask your neighbor, church members, friends and family to assist you. If possible, hire someone to do the cleaning or laundry. When you ask for assistance, you give a gift to someone close to you who wants to be helpful but doesn’t know what to do. Maintain a healthy lifestyle. It sounds clique but eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of fluids, getting regular exercise and sleeping at least 6-8 hours each night will help ensure you have the strength necessary to continue to be a caregiver to your loved one. You are just as important as the ones you care for so make sure that you take good care of you! Visiting Angels can help. Give us a call and one of our skilled and friendly caregivers will spend some time with your loved one so that you can take time for yourself; go shopping, to the movies or just have a few hours for your own thoughts. We are available to visit your home on a regular basis or just once depending on your needs. When you are around your parents do you immediately revert to your ten-year old self? Are you motivated by a desire to please, constantly hounded by things you feel you “should” do and weighed down by guilt that you wish you were doing something else? You are not alone. When Visiting Angels of Greater Akron was founded 14 years ago, we were motivated by a desire to offer an alternative to aging adults who

www.summitcountywomensjournal.com

wished to stay in their home as long as possible, but perhaps needed some help with the day-today activities. Our clients are really more like extended family and our caregivers become a welcome member of your home; helping the older adult and provided much needed respite for caregiving adult children. We’ll come spend time in your home doing the laundry, basic cleaning, meal preparation, taking care of your parent so that you can have a few much needed hours to care for yourself. Living a life filled with guilt leads to unnecessary stress and depression. Allow us to be that friendly helping hand. Walking on Water I have wanted to walk on the water for a very long time now. The storms have been raging! Is it my age? Everything hurts. Life is slamming in from every direction. I am tired, restless, frazzled. The obituaries are no longer lists of names of strangers…they are people I know. They are no longer the ones who have lived long, productive lives .They are young fathers and small children. The captured and tortured are relatives of my church members and students of my friends. It is all so close and I wait in terror for it to hit again. How close will it come? If I don’t move or breathe too hard, will it not see me and leave me alone? Schools are hit by murderers and tornados. Animals are abused. The economy crawls to recovery. My cat is afraid to go out and roam. Two minutes on the back porch and he is back in the kitchen. I am just like him. I have no wander lust, no spirit of adventure. Far away places are filled with terrorists and danger and disease. The “bad” news blasts into my consciousness 24 hours a day from the press, television, radio, internet and social media. It is relentless and threatening and I have bought into it. Don’t let the children out to play. There is a sexual predator on every corner! We have entered a dark age. I have beckoned the light. I have invited a priest to bless the house today and to pray against a spirit of anxiety. He sprinkles drops of Holy Water about. Several drops fall on my cat, who jumps on my lap uncertain of what is happening. The priest prays for Eric who is cleaning my windows with newspaper of all things. Eric says that newspaper cleans better than anything leaving no streaks or smudges. The priest prays over pictures of my son, daughter in law and grand children. I pile up photos of friends and family and we pray for them all. He prays over the “man cave”…a special request of my significant other. He prays against anxiety, depression, illness, accidents, financial worries, losing loved ones, pain, pain, pain. We crumple all of the pain up like newspaper and render it a changed substance. With God’s help, we transform it into something that cleans the windows and allows the light in. Evil is a force to be battled. We are calling in the troupes. No weapon formed against us will prosper. We pray and pray and pray until we feel certain that we too can calm the storms with our faith and triumphantly walk on the water.

Sandra Lee The Cover “Collecting Angels” You can never have too many angels. Jodi Wood is Angel Supreme for sure. She is more than a pretty face as she runs a very large company with over 70 employees, all of whom are as sweet is she is. (Learn more about it on pages 2 and 3). We both wore white….guess we were in a To Lean On Meet Jodi Wood, President mood of purity. With her gorgeous red hair, she could of Visiting Angels of Greater Akron wear anything and look great! As for me, well don’t underestimate the power of CONSIGNMENT. I am wearing a St John’s suit which I swear to you I saw at a retail shop for $3000….yep….I said three thousand dollars in a Manhasset, New York boutique. I spotted it at one of my favorite consignments months later for a fraction of the cost and grabbed it. Our center section shows you some of my favorite haunts for consignment shopping. The cover photo is by Ken Love and my hair by Lee Hendrikson of The Hair Specialist of Hudson. Fifteen Spa kept me together with mani/pedi, massage, facial and their priceless touch of class. Resiliency By Barbara Medlock, R.N., M.S.N Co-Facilitator, Summit County Suicide Prevention Coalition When you have resilience, you harness inner strength that helps you rebound from a setback or challenge, such as a job loss, an illness, a disaster or the death of a loved one. If you lack resilience, you might dwell on problems, feel victimized, become overwhelmed or turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse. Resilience offers protection from various mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety. Resilience can also help offset factors that increase the risk of mental health conditions, such as lack of social support, being bullied or previous trauma. If you have an existing mental health condition, being resilient can improve your ability to cope. The Mayo Clinic suggests these tips for becoming more resilient:

• Make every day meaningful. Do something that gives you a sense of accomplishment and purpose every day.

• Get connected. Building strong, positive relationships with loved ones and

natural volume

Three magical solutions for your hair problems… By Kelly Bartlett Are you a busy professional woman who needs to look great everyday? Is your hair a little thin on top and difficult to manage? Do you like to have volume at your crown but are tired of teasing and spraying? Do you have thin hair from illness or medical treatments? Don’t have time to wash your hair every day and still need to look great? Is your hair damaged by chemicals or too much color? If you find yourself answering yes to even one of these questions you are a candidate for a Natural Volume solution. The Hair Specialists have uncovered Hollywood’s best kept secret and are proud to spill the beans. Have you ever noticed how Hollywood stars have short hair one day and then long and gorgeous hair the next? And they NEVER have thin hair. Celebs don’t have super hair power. They are using a new type of enhancement called NATURAL VOLUME! This revolutionary four clip, no pain, hassle free attachment is made of real human hair. It’s as simple as a snap on, snap off, application. It can be shaped, styled, dyed, and blow-dried to make it blend seamlessly into your existing hair. Fine hair becomes full, thin hair becomes voluptuous, short hair suddenly grows, and medium hair can turn into an executive ponytail. You can even have long dramatic hair for an evening out.

The best part is you get all this for a whole lot less than you think. The Hair Specialists specializes in hair only services and thrives on helping women find answers for their hair frustrations. After years of listening to the concerns of clients with thinning hair we perfected fusion hair extensions, which are wonderful for adding length and thickness to thin hair. Next, for thinning, fragile hair we brought you Cyber Micro Point Links in which four hairs are meticulously tied onto one of your existing hairs to create volume and thickness. Now we add Natural Volume,. A perfect addition that can be worn in conjunction with our fusion extensions to give you that extra wow factor, or simply by themselves. Natural Volume is the solution that gives you a “bad hair day no more” feeling with tons of options, and best yet can give any woman celebrity star hair.

Not an Ordinary Massage Danielle Schlea, known as Danielle Hopkins for the previous 16 years, has practiced Massage Therapy in Hudson since 1997, and is now located in Salon Fifteen. A 1991 graduate from Kent State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree with Excercise Science background, Dani had experience operating work site health centers and promotion prior to entering the massage therapy field. It was an easy transition for her as she focuses on deep muscle therapy, and many of her clientele have athletic backgrounds themselves. She has received clients coming from area doctor and physical therapy offices and athletic trainers, as well as Akron Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine Physicians. Even the local running shoe store, Vertical Runner, has great rapport with her, referring many of their ailing runners. Dani has been certified in Orthopedic Massage for the past 9 years. She has great focus to get to the root of the problem and answer questions about why clients’ bodies are in pain. “It’s like a puzzle to me. When a person gets on the massage table, I listen to what they tell me about their physical issues before I begin any body work. I have an ability to find structural problems they don’t realize they have.” Dani works very “deep” so this isn’t your typical relaxation massage. “My clients come to me for a reason and they trust 12

The Women’s Journals™ Summit – Portage – Stark

me because I try very hard to gage the massage pressure to what the individual can handle. Some need more, some less. The key is to listen to the client.” The age range of clients is from 8 years old to 88 years old. She uses a structural integration concept. “The body is a lever and pulley system. so you need to understand the mechanics of how the body compensates for itself. I don’t think enough massage therapists take that information into account. Even if you just want a regular ‘relaxation’ massage, chances are you still need the structural body work. I haven’t worked on anyone who doesn’t!” Dani tells her clients that we live in a “flexoholic society”, meaning everything we tend to do on a daily basis requires us to bend forward at the waist, and that’s where problems begin. “It is part of my job to educate the client in posture to help free themselves of the pain they are creating. You can correct your posture every minute of the day. So over time, with the conscious effort on the clients’ part and my massage work, they will feel better and know how to keep themselves strong.”

Massage therapy works side by side with any medical doctor, chiropractor, physical therapist, or acupuncturist. “The concept is to get you feeling better, sooner,” says Dani, “and to find a therapist who works for you.” Her schedule is typically booked solid for 2 weeks ahead, and clients are often booked 2 months ahead to assure needed time slots. “I often say I have the best job in the world because people cannot wait to see me and don’t like leaving. It’s a very gratifying field, and I love being able to help people who are in pain to either see the pain alleviated or have it gone completely.”

Understanding massage has evolved over the years. Many people are tired of taking medications that do not alleviate the pain or that create other physical problems. Massage can be a different option. Dani’s goal is to be part of the medical spectrum with each client. Like Us on Facebook.com/thesummitcountywomensjournal

Dani is also certified in pregnancy massage and has worked with the local Hudson High School and Western Reserve Academy student athletes and athletic trainers. “Teaching the young moms and the young athletes that massage is a great way to take care of themselves has been a terrific experience for me. Massage is about preventative maintenance for everyone. It’s not about pampering yourself as some people think. If you suffer from muscular pain on a regular basis there has to be a reason why. Finding out what causes the problem is what I enjoy doing best.”

Body Story Telling and Reiki By Sandra Lee What is the story your body is trying to tell you? Tell your story and relieve your pain. Have you been told that the source of your severe pain or deteriorating physical health cannot be clinically identified? Do you have a chronic pain that ends with the word “syndrome” or Fibromyalgia where you cannot find relief or understanding? Is the pain so bad and so chronic that it has reduced your joy and faith in life? Are you diagnosed with pain for any reason that makes you feel you are in crisis and even your medications seem to be betraying you? Mary Jane Brigger has a new approach to responding to these dilemmas that I was fascinated to learn more about. I went to talk to her about her practice in Soul Care Experience. She is a Certified Body Story Expert and Reiki Master/Teacher who helps

people spiritually understand the emotional, spiritual and physical reasons their bodies have developed a chronic or terminal illness. Mary Jane employs along with her Reiki, her Body Story Telling techniques. I went with a lower back pain. Half the world is suffering with that syndrome. There are dozens of physical reasons such a pain can develop and they are all worth discovering and we should bring them to our awareness. Clearly there was a fracture that xrays spotted. It was minor. It would heal. Clearly there was a very significant vitamin deficiency. Pills and nutrition could help. Clearly there is the aging process and the possibility of thinning bones. Measures could be taken to address that issue. But what I was looking for was the underlying emotional circumstances that started the trouble to begin with. I found myself saying things to Mary Jane like “this is eating me alive” referring to the stress I had been under the past two years. “If this continues, I fear it will go cellular and really do some serious damage” Then, I would say things like “this stress and sadness is more that I can handle. It is just too

heavy!” My verbal expressions described in detail the incidents of the last two years and then connected those incidents to patterns that threaded all the way to when I was 4 years old. Mary Jane was a marvelous listener and guide to help me piece the mysterious parts together. With her help, I was beginning to find ways of telling a different story….changing the script….singing a new song. This pain had the power to unearth buried trauma and expose it to a deep emotional and spiritual healing. Balance, comfort and wisdom emerge. I continue to do all that is medically necessary to address health issues. But with Mary Jane’s help, I have a very different dialogue with my doctors and practitioners that is holistic and inclusive of this “story” of mine. So when the doctor asks me what the story is, he gets quite an earful! Most doctors today are quite sensitive to the body/mind syndrome and with an acute listening ear, they are able to take advantage of the insight of a patient who does not arrive clueless about the larger picture. We are all in this together.

A Hot Date with Jesus:

When an Old Lady Refuses to Fear the Reaper By Amanda E. van Brakle

amanda.vanbrakle@gmail.com

“Boy, I’m sure glad the girl is coming to give me a manicure. I’d hate to go with my nails looking like this. You know what? I can’t swallow anything. I’ll have a fresh manicure, but I’ll starve to death!” My sister, Lindsey, is a scientist at heart. In addition to many previous engagements in medical and/or scientific fields, you can count her among the ranks of those who are able to work with people in their last stages of life. I always viewed this as an incredible gift to have. Heaven knows I couldn’t do it. It made sense, then, that as she, our sister Samantha, and I met in the parking lot of an assisted living facility a few weeks ago, she felt the need to brief us on what we might expect. “She may understand everything that is going on. She may not. She’s very thin. She has a difficult time talking and she isn’t able to swallow. I just want you both to know what we might be walking into so that no one is surprised or upset.” Samantha and I nodded in understanding and we made our way to the reception desk in the lobby, swift and businesslike. We were there to visit our great, great Aunt Olga. Yep. Two “greats.” She was our oldest living female relative on my mother’s side. The sister of my mother’s maternal grandmother. The matriarch. Despite the giant sign at the reception desk which read, “LAUGH!” everyone was quiet and careful, as though if they just stood still enough, Death wouldn’t be able to find them. As if Death was just like the T-Rex in Jurassic Park and her vision was based on movement. We got to her room, took a collective deep breath, knocked, and entered. Samantha, the diplomat and ambassador of the three sisters brightly greeted her with, “Hi, Aunt Olga, how are you?” Even though she could barely speak above a whisper and she was about the same weight as a four and a half foot tall feather, we could still make out her characteristic raspy voice with the faint hint of a Brooklyn accent. “I’m dying!” she replied and then laughed heartily. “Isn’t it hysterical? I can’t believe it, but I’m dying!” None of the three of us knew how to react at first. Was she upset? Was she out of her mind? Did she mean that she was dying actively – at that very moment? Personally, I didn’t know what the hell to do or say. That is until she looked down at her chipped nail polish. To advertise call 440-390-8778 or email brandy717@cox.net

Without missing a beat or breaking a sweat, Samantha asked, “Well… are you okay with the trade off?” Aunt Olga paused. “Yeah, I’ll take it.” It was then that I realized that she was fine and it was okay to laugh with her. She was just being herself. Sarcastic and real. Earthy and raw. She spoke with wisdom, irony, and an excellent sense of comedic timing. “I hope the manicurist hurries up, though…” “Why?” I asked. “Got a hot date?” “Yeah, I got a hot date, alright. I got a hot date… with Jesus! You know… I was never very good at being religious…” All three of us responded in tandem, “Yeah, neither are we…” She nodded. “Some people think that you have to do everything just so, otherwise you’ll be wrong. You know what I think? I don’t think God has time for all that. I think you just try to be nice and good and kind. Believe me, when you get to the end, none of that other stuff really matters. What you do and what you don’t do… it doesn’t make that much of a difference. So the best I can say... is just do whatever you damn well want!” She spoke openly about her feelings on death. She wasn’t afraid at all. She was actually working out ways to joke with whatever entity came to retrieve her when the time came. We weren’t sure if she was talking about Jesus or God or the Grim Reaper, but it didn’t really matter. The three of us were spellbound by her wit and with how willingly she shared her feelings. She was an open book and we were lucky to be allowed to read a few pages. “I think what I’m gonna do when he comes to get me… I think I’m gonna say, ‘Wait! Wait! I’m not ready yet!’ I’m so old! What do you think he’ll say?” “Wouldn’t it be funny if he was just like, ‘Oh, okay, I’ll come back later,’” I asked. She waved her arms in the air, laughing at the thought of whoever was going to come for her calling her bluff

www.summitcountywomensjournal.com

and said, “Hang on, I was kidding! Let’s go!” She talked about how she couldn’t eat normal food any longer and how she hated the food (even though, she said, “they try”). She talked about how the doctors wanted to give her something for her nausea. “I can’t take pills, so they’ll want to give me some kind of a liquid. I’m gonna tell ‘em no. I’m not gonna die with a bad taste in my mouth!” I had always thought that my matter-of-factness and dark sense of humor came solely from my father. That afternoon – truly one of the most memorable afternoons that I have spent with another human – I realized that it went much further back than I thought. I realized that I had another woman to thank for what some view as my strangeness. There is no way to adequately thank her. There is no way to do that afternoon any sort of real justice. One of the reasons I’m writing about it is because she asked me to. “Amanda,” she said, “I want you to remember this. Every word. And write it down! You ever wanna tell someone a funny joke? Tell them this!” “I will. I promise.” “It’ll be even funnier if I’m still alive!” As you may have already surmised, she is not still alive. As I sit here typing, it has been less than twentyfour hours since she has passed away. I hope she is doing everything she ever wanted to do. I hope she is chain-smoking and having cocktails and seeing shows in Vegas. I hope she is travelling all over the world with her sister. I hope her body works perfectly and that she is eating the most delicious meals. I hope she is laughing and cracking jokes. I hope she understands what her life meant to me. As my sisters and I left that day, we were all laughing hysterically. Cackling, even. Geriatrics and staff alike watched us all the way to our cars, side-eyeing us as though we were calling too much attention to everyone. Some glared as though we were the reapers. But death is everywhere. Death is everywhere and death has a sick sense of humor that some people get and some people don’t. One thing I can say is this: Once you learn to start laughing with her and welcome her in, you realize that she’s a part of all of us and that she’s not such a bad gal after all.

10 Benefits of Personal Training By Sandra Lee Several months ago, my doctor recommended that I get some regular exercise and some weight training to strengthen bones. “The old grey mare, she aint what she used to be”. I knew that without support, I simply would not get the job done and I want to work for another twenty years so it was important to me to do the right thing. I started asking around to see who the best trainers were in the area. Again and again, I got good reports about the trainers at Fit 4 All, so I contacted them and began working with their trainers. I now go three times a week and am so grateful to be getting this help and support. There are so many benefits to hiring a personal trainer. Here are ten of them: 1. Improve Your Overall Fitness. surveys show the primary reason people hire personal trainers is to get professional assistance to improve cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, endurance, posture, balance and coordination. A personal trainer will monitor your progress and fine-tune your program as you go, helping you work your way off plateaus. 2. Reach or Maintain a Healthy Weight. Body fat reduction, weight reduction or management, body shaping and toning can all be achieved with the aid of a qualified personal trainer, who can help you set realistic goals and determine safe strategies, all while providing the encouragement you need. 3. Learn to Stick to It. Sticking with well-intentioned plans is one of the biggest challenges exercisers face. Qualified personal trainers can provide motivation for developing a lifestyle that places a high priority on health and activity. A personal trainer can help you brainstorm ways to

16

The Women’s Journals™ Summit – Portage – Stark

overcome your biggest obstacles to exercise. 4. Focus on Your Unique Health Concerns. Surveys show that 50 percent of personal trainers clients have special medical needs, such as arthritis, diabetes or obesity. A personal trainer can help you with these or other issues, including low-back pain, rehabilitation from injury and pre/postnatal training. Your personal trainer can work with your physician, physical therapist or other health care provider to plan a safe, efficient program that will speed your recovery or enable you to reach your health goals. 5. Find the Right Way to Work Out. You will learn the correct way to use equipment, and appropriate form and technique for cardiovascular work and freeweight training. 6. Stop Wasting Time. Get maximum results in minimum time with a program designed specifically for you. Workouts that use your strengths and improve on your weaknesses are efficient and effective. 7. Learn New Skills. Want to improve your tennis game, learn to ski, become an in-line skater, golf like a pro, better your weekend basketball game or get ready for a wilderness adventure vacation? An individualized program can improve your overall conditioning and develop the specific skills you need. 8. Enhance Your Mind, Body and Spirit. A personal trainer can act as a doorway to new personal growth experiences. Many personal trainers provide mindbody activities, such as yoga or tai chi sessions. Your personal trainer may help you uncover new insights about yourself or find potential you didn’t realize you had.

9. Benefit From the Buddy System. What could be better than making a commitment to regularly meet with someone who will provide you with individualized attention and support? 10. Take Charge of Your Program, and Do It Your Way. With the right personal trainer, you can find the exercise program that works best for you. Are you more comfortable with a demanding program or a gentler approach?

Would you like to train at home or at work, at a fitness club or in a personal trainer’s facility? How many times per week or month do you want to meet your personal trainer, and for how long? Carefully choosing a personal trainer enables you to select the type of guidance that will benefit you. You can get fit and healthy your way and take ultimate responsibility for your own health.

Aggressive Collection Efforts by the County Prosecutor’s Office Pays Dividends One of the duties of the county prosecutor’s office is to collect delinquent real estate taxes and assessments through the tax foreclosure process. The county treasurer makes referrals to the office from the delinquent land tax list compiled twice each year by the county auditor and treasurer.

JOHN D. FERRERO Stark County Prosecuting Attorney

John D. Ferrero, Stark County Prosecuting Attorney said that “In the last few years there was an increase in delinquent taxes, and consequently the number of cases handled by my office has increased.” He further noted that since 2009, “The office has handled over 1,400 cases. Over ninety percent of the recovered funds goes to the school districts in the county.”

Stark County Prosecutor’s Office 110 Central Plaza South Suite 510 Canton, Ohio 44702 Phone: 330-451-7897

A case commences with a referral from the county treasurer requesting the commencement of collection proceedings involving a delinquent parcel of real estate. Prior to the filing of a law-

suit, a demand letter is sent to the owner of the property requesting immediate payment of the delinquent amount or directing that suitable arrangements for installment payments be made to the satisfaction of the Treasurer. Although a demand letter prior to filing a lawsuit is not necessary, it is our effort to allow the owner of the property to resolve the matter without incurring the additional costs associated with a lawsuit. In the event a resolution of the matter is not obtained as a result of the demand letter, a lawsuit is filed and the matter is concluded with a sheriff sale of the property. The owner has the opportunity to redeem the taxes by payment in full or by making satisfactory payment arrangements prior to confirmation of the sale by the court. At that point the owner is responsible to pay all delinquent taxes, assessments, interest, penalties and court costs. Once the sale is confirmed by the court, redemption is

no longer permitted and the property is transferred by deed to the purchaser and taxes and court costs are paid. Approximately 30% to 40% of all cases filed result in a sheriff sale of the property to third party purchasers. Approximately 25% of sheriff sales result in no bid and no sale causing the property to be forfeited to the state. It should be noted that the tax foreclosure process is essentially an “in rem” process which means that no personal judgment is rendered against the owner for any tax liability. The tax obligation is satisfied through the sale of the property. The aggressive collection efforts of the prosecutor’s office has resulted in $7,922,000.00 collected from properties on the delinquent tax list for the years 2009 through 2012. This successful effort has been made possible by the cooperative efforts of the county prosecutor’s office and the office of the county treasurer.

Leave it to the Pros! It’s a beautiful day and like so many professional people living in a home where every resident is working full time and over time, I have no time for any real deep cleaning. I am so grateful to the pros who come and go and help me to keep the house in respectable order. The windows have not been cleaned in a very long time and I wince at the prospect of bringing someone in to do the job. They will huff and puff for sure and likely criticize me for being so negligent. By Sandra Lee

I met Eric Lund one day when I saw his bright yellow SERVICEMASTER truck tooling around Hudson. I kept telling myself to grab a pen and write down the number of the business. I prodded myself…”C’mon, your windows haven’t been thoroughly cleaned in years and your light carpeting is in desperate need of attention and your wood floors could use a cleaning and polish and your deck needs power washing and your high chandeliers and fans are so dusty!” and on and on and on! Of course, I couldn’t find a pen. Then I pulled into the bank to make a deposit from the car and there was that yellow truck again! I followed it like a stalker and hunted Eric down. “ Hey”, I yelled, “ I need a lot of help! Can we talk?” And so it started. I’ve been calling Eric ever since to do the work I simply cannot do. I don’t have the time. And I clearly don’t have the strength. And I don’t have the proper equipment to do it all. Eric has the time, the strength, the equipment and one more thing…the most wonderful manners and gentle spirit. It is highly personal to bring someone into your home or place of business and allow them access to your space. It is good to leave such work to the pros but what pros? It is important to have a reference. Eric, you have one in me. Great attitude, great skill, great job!

Can You Protect Yourself? By Sherri Bevan Walsh Summit County Prosecutor Local and national news has been providing almost nonstop coverage of the miraculous story in Cleveland of three women missing for a decade who finally escaped their captor. This is an incredible story that brings hope to the many families whose loved ones have disappeared. This story also raises the question of what you would do if someone tried to attack or abduct you. Would you know how to defend yourself? When I was a young assistant city prosecutor, a serial rapist attacked me as I was getting into my car. It was 8:30 on a weekday morning. There were other people on the street. I remember noticing a man walking toward me and having an uneasy feeling as he came closer. I casually

watched him until he passed by. After he passed, I chastised myself for being nervous around a harmless stranger in broad daylight and got into my car. That’s when the rapist opened my car door and attacked me. I had not seen him come back. Fortunately I was able to fight off my attacker using techniques I had learned at a self-defense class. I had practiced those moves because I thought they were fun. I never expected I would actually need to use them. But when I found myself in a very dangerous situation, I remembered what to do. Not every woman is that lucky. Crime does not only happen at night in dark alleys. I am living proof that attacks can happen anywhere at any time. And the best way to fend off an attacker is to be aware of your

surroundings and familiar with basic self-defense moves. I think it is so important for women to know how to defend themselves. No one wants to believe they could be a victim, but the truth is that it could happen to anyone. And you need to be prepared. That is why I am hosting a series of female self-defense classes throughout the summer and fall. These free, two-hour classes cover the basics of self-defense, from verbal techniques and simple wristbreakaways to escaping choke holds and what to do if your attacker forces you to the ground.

We’re old pros, but some people may not recognize the water problems they have at home. Let us help you! Smelly or bad tasting water? Total dissolved solid, or TDS, like hydrogen sulphide, iron and other chemicals can lead to rotten-egg, fishy and chlorine odors in your water. Sound familiar? Hard water spots? Minerals in your water can build up on glassware, shower doors, fixtures, clothes or other items throughout your home. A Culligan Water Softener, sometimes called a Water Conditioner, will remove harmful minerals that can cloud or etch your glassware. Much better, huh? Noticing rust stains? Excess iron in your water leaves red or brown rust stains on fixtures and clothing. Your Culligan Man has the systems to prevent red stains, to save you time and money on cleaning.

Free Water Test! A simple water test is a great step in understanding what’s in your water. Your local Culligan Man can analyze your water in minutes, right in your home.

Screw the Scale By Amanda E. van Brakle

amanda.vanbrakle@gmail.com

Weird, right?

Since I was about six years old, I’ve been the “fat girl.” I think at six, I probably wouldn’t have been considered obese, but I was not railthin like all of the little girls at school. I was always taller, darker, more muscular, rougher. Suffice it to say, I was no Disney princess and even at that young age, I knew it. Somewhere around nine or ten years old, I became actually fat. I ate for comfort at home and then went to school and got mercilessly made fun of. And around and around we went. The ruthless taunting tapered off in high school, but my body image never really changed. I don’t really have a clear concept of what I look like and I have struggled with bouts of depression, bulimia, drug use, you name it, either on the never-ending quest to become thin, whatever that means, or to forget about how godawful I was feeling. The funny thing is, I have no idea what I weigh. This isn’t because I don’t ever step on a scale. In fact, I’ve stepped on a lot of scales over the past few weeks - some of them several times in the same day (or hour, or minute). There is the scale at home. It’s a fifteen year old model that my husband brought from his mother’s house when he bought his condo a few years ago. I am the heaviest on this scale. I won’t reveal the number, but suffice it to say that I could probably push almost all of you out of a sumo ring if I wanted to. Then there is the scale at the doctor’s office. I was just there and I am ten pounds lighter at the doctor’s office than I am in my house. To advertise call 440-390-8778 or email brandy717@cox.net

Then there is the scale at work. I was on that one when I had to go through my “biometric screening” (one of the joys of open enrollment). Surprisingly, that is my favorite scale. I’m an entire twenty pounds lighter on the scale at work than I am on the doctor’s scale (30 pounds lighter than I am at home, for all of you math whizzes). After this screening, I was feeling pretty good about myself. I’ve been working really hard to get healthier. I’ve changed my diet. I’ve gone from basically laying around all the time to going to CrossFit three times per week. I’ve changed my entire lifestyle, actually. And I felt so good when that number was so low. I felt worthy of my own praise. Like I could be proud of my hard work. The bubble burst when I went to the doctor’s office, though. I still weighed less than I did the last time I was there. I was able to lower my dose of anti-depressants, partially because of weighing less and partially because of all of the working out. My overall health has improved quite a bit over the past few months. But damnit if that number didn’t make me feel terrible. Maybe it was because I was a chubby kid and other kids would always ask how much I weighed, not in the curious way that kids sometimes ask rude questions, but more so with a tone of anticipating being able to make fun of the fat girl. Maybe it’s because I still feel like my middle school self and I can hear my peers chanting cruel names while I just stand there, fighting back tears, feeling too small (or too massive, as the case may be) to defend myself.

www.summitcountywomensjournal.com

Maybe it’s the voice of one of my first boyfriends, telling me that he is breaking up with me for another girl because, “my friends are jealous of me when I’m with her. She’s just... hotter.” But wait a second. I’m not in high school anymore. Or middle school. Or elementary school. I’m thirty freaking years old and I have better voices to listen to. My husband’s voice, who tells me I’m beautiful and strong every single day. My sisters, who tell me they love me and that they are proud of me. A good friend who says she’s proud of me every time I finish a CrossFit workout, regardless of how long it takes me or how much of a mess I am at the end of it. All of my friends and family who have nothing but affirming words and encouragement. Most importantly, there is my own voice. The voice that I have to use to remind myself that my health, wellbeing and worth have little to nothing to do with the number that pops up on whatever scale on which I happen to be standing. The voice that reminds me that two months ago, I couldn’t do a sit-up, a squat or run further than about ten yards (I can do all of those things now). The voice that reminds me that I am stronger every single day. That my hard work is worth it because it is for me. When I listen hard to my own voice is when I can look straight at the scale - any of the scales - and definitively say: screw you.

Do You Fear That Divorce or Bankruptcy Will Tear You Apart?

By Sandra Lee for Susan Lax Attorney, Susan Lax, knows what to do to protect your nest egg or to help you re-build your life. You do not have to ‘lose your shirt’ or sacrifice your dignity!

Divorce A lot of people just stay in unhappy marriages because the economics are more than they can contemplate. They look at what they’ve built and divide it in two and it isn’t enough. Susan Lax advises that you “value your marital assets smartly so that you can salvage, not sabotage your future.” Here are ten essentials when preparing for divorce: 1. Organize your files. Have your papers in one place and in coherent form… banks, tax information, etc. You can do it! 2. Know the numbers. Keep your own inheritance separate and know what is liquid. Plan a living alone” budget way in advance of actually living alone. 3. Become financially secure. Stash some funds, get a job, get necessary education – build your war chest. Your survival is at stake here. 4. Improve your credit. Get credit in your name. Pay

down debt. Good credit is a freedom option. 5. Avoid large financial decisions. When a marriage is shaky, watch out for large assets being manipulated. 6. Hold your ground. Stay in your house until you’ve consulted a lawyer. If you are close to a ten year marriage – stick it out a bit. Your social security benefits are at risk. 7. Consider children. If you want custody, be a model caretaker and leave them out of as much conflict as possible. 8. Keep your calm. Solve issues in the presence of a third party. 9. Insurance. Be sure you are the irrevocable beneficiary. 10.Contact a lawyer. There is no substitute for good advice.

Bankruptcy In 2005, more than 1 million women were expected to file for bankruptcy, outnumbering men by about 150,000 if trends hold. In that same year, a nationwide survey by Visa USA and the Consumer Federation of America found that 42 percent of women who responded had less than $500 in emergency savings, and 55 percent of women age 25 to 34 did no maintain an emergency savings account of at least $500.

Women’s higher number of bankruptcy protection filings reflects a complex set of social barriers to financial security; lower earnings, less education about money and, often, sole responsibility for raising children. By 2010, 1 in 6 single mothers is expected to file for bankruptcy. “When people wonder why women are in more financial trouble, it’s because they earn less, they live longer, they get less support, they get sick, and they have huge obligations to their children,” says Karen Gross, a professor at New York Law School. According to Jill Miller, president of Women Work, a nonprofit network, “Nine of 10 times, women file for bankruptcy because they’ve lost their jobs, experienced a medical emergency of because of divorce or separation. The facts belie the myth that women are filing because they are irresponsible and frivolous spenders. That’s just not the case.” Often women persuade their husbands to file when men, who are too proud, are in desperate circumstances. Filing for bankruptcy is never an easy decision, but being in debt is stressful financially and emotionally. A good lawyer can…

Our Gift of Inspiration to You.... The Summer Day by Mary Oliver

Who made the world? Who made the swan, and the black bear? Who made the grasshopper? This grasshopper, I meanthe one who has flung herself out of the grass, the one who is eating sugar out of my hand, who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and downwho is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face. Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away. I don’t know exactly what a prayer is. I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day. Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

Women Can Retire Twice as Rich By Dee Siegferth

Dee Siegferth President and CEO The Milestone Center for Retirement and Estate Planning, LLC 2780 S. Arlington Road Suite 201 Akron, Ohio 44312 330-644-0284 www.themilestonecenter.com

Women pride themselves in getting the best deals on almost anything. Women are Planners and Doers! It is more challenging for most women today. Many of our parents had pensions; 401ks, and they could count on Social Security. Today Women are Business owners, working full or part time and handling multiple responsibilities with no pensions, 401ks or guarantees. To top it off, today’s women have experienced more life changes than our parents; such as divorces, job losses, relocation changes, or dealing with family illnesses. The real financial road block for women is they simply cannot find the time to put “their financial future first.” The Solution for busy Women is to make their Retirement and Financial plans Automatic! For example, if you or someone you loved started saving $25.50 automatically in an IRA account, you would be creating your own future retirement income. In this example, you would have saved $1326 a year. If you contributed this amount for 15 years growing at 6% return, you would have an IRA account with nearly $36,000 in it. By increasing your contribution each year, your IRA money will continue to grow! When Women take this challenge and put their Retirement Financial “360” Life Plans on automatic, they comment that they do not even miss the extra cash that they have deposited in their automatic retirement portfolio, traditional IRA or Roth IRA account, life insurance policy or college fund. If any disaster or hiccup happens in their lives, they have a plan in place which includes their Wills and Important Documents.

Why consider an IRA? According to Ed Slott, the Nation’s IRA expert and PBS Educator, “Opening and saving even a little in an IRA is important because (1) Money in IRAs grow tax-deferred! You are not taxed on your growth until you take the money out after age 59 ½. (2) You can deduct your full Traditional IRA Contribution on Your Tax Return depending on your modified adjusted income. (3) You have Investment Freedom – You can invest in varied types of investments, such as stock or mutual fund portfolios, tax deferred annuities, and CDs based on your tolerance to risk. What is your vision for your Retirement? Your “360” Life Plan is based on that vision, It doesn’t matter where you are in your Life Plan, your plan needs adjusted yearly to ensure that you are on track to meet your goals. Life has a way of throwing us curves; but with a Flexible Automatic Financial plan; you will have the assurance of knowing that you can keep on track without running out of money, losing most of it to taxes, investment loss, illness or life’s uncertainties. Take the 2013 Financial Challenge: “Retire with twice as much by following a simple “360” Life plan, which ensures that your security file, investment file and wishes files are complete. When looking for a Certified Public Accountant, think about your own personal preferences as well as your business needs. Are you interested in hiring a large firm of CPAs or a CPA that has their own business? If you opt for the large firm, find out if you’ll be dealing with one particular person, or will it be whoever answers the phone when you call. It’s best to have one person to build a relationship with! Also, find out what their hours of operation are? Make sure that you can call them at hours that are

convenient for you. These are some questions to consider to keep you out of harm’s way as you build your business.

While you may be tempted to bask in the sun after a long, cold winter, be sure to protect your skin – especially the delicate skin on your face. Developing fine lines is a normal function of aging. But deep-set wrinkles are directly attributed to overexposure to the sun, which breaks down the skin’s collagen support structure and results in deep wrinkles, ridges, freckles and blotches. A great hat is a fashionable way to protect the delicate skin on our faces. Sun hats come in all shapes and sizes, from wide brims made of straw or fabric, to narrower brims that offer protection with a smaller profile. Award-winning milliner, Paula Singleton, understands that a great hat is much more than just a functional ob-

ject – it can also be an artful accessory that expresses the personality of its wearer and accentuates her best features. When looking for the perfect summer hat, be sure to visit the What a Great Hat! studio in Fairlawn, where you’ll receive individualized attention and find many styles to choose from. Paula can help you with the right fit and welcomes the opportunity to create a custom design just for you. Call 330-592-2295 today for an appointment.
