Underscored by ambiguity, Fight or Flight reveals remarkable similarities between man-made objects and nature: what seems docile and harmless at first glance can suddenly shift to become dark and ominous when viewed more closely. The dragonfly is a marvel of flight engineering. Much like a dragonfly, the helicopter is adept at quickly plunging in for a landing in a difficult location, and hastily fleeing when faced with danger. Migratory bird species, such as geese and ducks, fly together to conserve energy over long distances. Having fancied the flight of birds for millennia, we finally broke free of our terrestrial confines in the beginning of the 20th Century with the invention of the airplane. It is our hope that these vessels will provoke contemplation and discussion of where we may soar next.
Vase-Face is a famous set of cognitive optical illusions developed around 1915 by the Danish psychologist Edgar Rubin. At first glance, you may see an image of a vase or a goblet. Look again and the perspective shifts and you see two human faces in silhouetted profile. Our interpretation of the illusion investigates the use of animated facial profiles as the negative images. The faces describe the following emotions: anger, joy, love, and defiance. The name of the set, “Conversation Piece�, can be interpreted in several ways, just like the optical illusion. A conversation piece is an unusual object that arouses comment or interest. This refers to the vase depicted on the espresso cup and to the cup itself. The conversation is occurring between the two facial profiles, and also takes place between the espresso drinkers.
Often portrayed as the drink of the ancient Greek gods, ambrosia is told to confer ageless immortality upon whoever consumes it. The modern interpretation of this drink is coffee: a natural energy supplier with an invigorating aroma and full-bodied taste fit for a king. Each cup in this set of four represents a Greek god by depicting the element of nature they are best known for. Zeus was responsible for bringing rain, drought, and thunderstorms. Prometheus stole Fire from Zeus and gave it to man. Poseidon, God of the Sea. Aeolus was appointed to be the Ruler of the Winds.

If culture and capital are two of the products that define a successful society, what happens when they are used as preconceived notions, planned into a city rather than spontaneously resulting from the natural course of a city’s development over time? That is, how does a capital investment in manufacturing culture impact city form?
What does it mean to be the capital of a nation symbolically and how does that figure into the urban form of ‘capital’ cities. Traditionally a nation’s ‘capital’ is its seat of government—but the term has come to identify cities whose economic, cultural, or global status render them as, if not more, important than the recognized administrative center.

Empires throughout time and all over the world have had not only a local impact on the imperial city (the seat of power) but also a global impact on settlement patterns, national borders, cultural identity, and city form. But empires have a lifespan. It is interesting to look at the precedent of past empires to understand how a former world power adjusts to a new identity. How does a city once grandiose in its power and influence come to terms with a new global order?
Since the mid-19th century, the world’s fair has been a breeding ground for innovations in architecture, civil & structural engineering, and infrastructure. Three cities who have been past world’s fair hosts established a precedent for their time, providing some of the most memorable structures of the last few centuries. One city has yet to host a world’s fair, but represents a future city on the cusp of a new world order, with a potential for unrivaled innovation.
As population demographics change in the age of the global economy, cities are expanding exponentially and enveloping their environs with agglomerative gusto. What was considered ‘sprawl’ is becoming the model for urban development, as cities grow together/towards each other to achieve critical mass. As cities experience mitosis, bifurcation and coagulation, how is city form impacted by this process?
