President’s Report SULADS, MINISTRY IN ACTION In January 2016, I was appointed by South Philippine Union Conference to lead the SULADS institution. Without any hesitation, I accepted the challenge! When I first begun my work as President of SULADS, I was greatly humbled by the experiences that I encountered and by the people I have worked with for they have been my inspiration in the mission field. Being part of SULADS has brought back so much memories and experiences from when I served as one of the SULADS student missionary during my college days in Mountain View College in1988. I realized that the Lord had prepared me for the great task of caring for our brothers and sisters in the mountains and islands. I am confident enough to say, that the Lord is to be praised for the bountiful harvest we received this year. In July 2016, the Southern-Asia Pacific Division administrators came to visit Tawi-Tawi, leading them was Pastor Saw Samuel. It brought our missionaries to tears as they felt the warmth and concern of our administrators from SSD. It was a humbling experience for me and the SULADS Volunteers, as well! The SULADS also availed the assistance of and continues to be partners with the Philippine Adventist Medical Aviation Services (PAMAS) for numerous proEphraim Pitogo sits in the front row (third from the right) jects and activities. In October 2016, the Mission and Conference’ Administrators had the chance to visit their own respective mission schools and fields through the aid of the PAMAS helicopter and their 6-sitter private plane. This year also, we are blessed to have 90 active and brave SULADS Volunteers assigned in the different indigenous areas of Mindanao. As the author James Ramsey Ullman says… “Challenge is the core and the mainspring of all human activity. If there’s an ocean, we cross it; if there’s a disease, we cure it; if there’s a wrong, we right it; if there’s a record, we break it; and finally, if there’s a mountain, we climb it.” Brethren, I urge you, let us climb the mountains and help in “reaching the unreached”. As Ellen G. White says, “If Christians were to act in concert, moving forward as one, under the direction of one power for the accomplishment of one purpose they would move the world.” Let us continue to… THINK about SULADS, TALK about SULADS, PRAY for SULADS, WORK with SULADS.

SULADS Schools Hold Closing Exercises

SULADS Welcomes New Members The year 2016 brought us lots of new people into SULADS which includes a new president, Pastor Ephraim Pitogo. He is recently the Manager for HOPE Channel at the South Philippine Union Conference. But when called to assist SULADS, he could not deny the opportunity to give back to what had helped him “go into the mountains as a boy and come out as a man”. Ezerjhon Cagubcob, BS Accounting Tech Student, shared his working hours at the Business Office to SULADS. He is assisting SULADS Finance Dept. Accounting Work. A labor on his schedule but an act of his service in heart. Sarah Gaid has so kindly taken up the post as Treasurer for SULADS. With her years experience in the bank plus the faithful evidence of the Lord, in faith we claim, “SULADS to Go Forward!”

Domingo High School Students joined together to form 8 groups. The students enjoyed the bliss of newfound friends, firsttime camping experience, tons of spiritual inspiration, and a fun-filled ride with the Blue Jeep. The event was highlighted by a very special miracle where “12 baskets of leftovers” of rice was distributed to all schools. A dose of Pathfindering coupled with a dash of intercultural exposure brought students such a bliss!

Sulads receive certificates of appreciation

April On April 15-16, 2016 SULADS held a special weekend reunion program for the SULADS Volunteers (2015-2016) at the MVC SULADS Campus, with the theme: “The Hands of God in My Mission”. It began with a special welcoming the Sabbath Program on the lawn with Sir Pete Barolo, followed by a communion service and candle-lighting ceremony. Sabbath was filled with lovely stories and reports from all the Sulads who have served in the diverse territories that we have in the Philippines. The Sulads were given certificates for their selfless service to the people that Sabbath evening. What joy it truly is to serve God.

SULADS Mountain View College Hosts 2016 SULADS Training From April 17, 2016 until May 15, 2016, SULADS Campus was filled with lots of activities where 61 volunteers were trained for the field for the next term. They were taught Health, Education, Agriculture, and Livelihood by our own SULADS Staff. The main focus for this year’s training was on the spiritual walk with Jesus - the program was done by spiritual small groups where the trainees studied the Steps to Christ. The Dedication Ceremony was held at SULADS Campus on May 13, 2016 where Pastor Edwin Gulfan; former Sulad and pioneer at Sto. Domingo, shared his wisdom with the volunteers who discovered where they would be assigned this year. The Tikos Ceremony and Oath Taking took place on the May 14, 2016 where they saw the importance of their role in reaching out to the unreached people groups. With the help of Philippine Adventist Medical Aviation Services (PAMAS), SULADS Volunteers where then brought to their different fields.

Adventist Administrators Visit Tawi-Tawi

Adventist Administrators on the speed boat

On July 15-16, leaders from the Southern Asia Pacific Division (SSD), South Philippine Union Conference (SPUC), and Zamboanga Peninsula Mission (ZPM) gathered together for the first time, to visit the SULADS locale in Tawi-Tawi. For the duration of their stay, the church leaders visited the islands where SULADS volunteers were in. The leaders were able to witness firsthand, how SULADS work with the Muslim tribes and how the volunteers lived, mingled, and taught the little ones in the Literacy Centers. On eve of the 16th, the group had a short program at Don Mar Resort, Bongoa, TawiTawi. SSD President, Elder Saw Samuel, gave the message where he encouraged the volunteers to stay strong and continue the work the Lord had called them to do. The program was closed with a prayer of dedication for the SULADS Mastals (teachers) in service. The prayer was centered on the asking of continued Divine assistance for the mastals to face the tasks of “reaching the unreached”.

NEMM Sulads Report in the Mission in Butuan On July 29 - August 1, SULADS Volunteers in the NEMM Cluster experienced a unique type of reporting. Sir Dawis, NEMM SULADS Coordinator, asked the SULADS Staff to serve as resource speakers for extra lectures that centered on their respective areas of expertise. The program was held at the North Eastern Mindanao Mission (NEMM) in Butuan City. After the NEMM SULADS reports on their experiences from the field, the SULADS Staff; Pastor Ephraim Pitogo, Sir Lowel “Wing” Limbagan, Vincent Baragona, and Liz Ang, gave lectures focusing on the H.E.A.L. (Health, Education, Agriculture, Livelihood) Program.

NEMM Sulads Report in the Mission in Butuan On September 23, 2016, the SULADS Staff and Quartet Junior headed to Tupi Central Church wondering why God did not allow them to ride the Starex Van but the Kia Truck instead. They soon realized God arranged it so that they could accept the church’s gift of 50 sin metal sheets and nails for the roofing of Bohung and the schools in Ned, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. The SULADS group were truly grateful for the great opportunity to share about SULADS Ministry with the brethren in Tupi Central Seventh-day Adventist Church in South Cotabato.

Supervisor’s Message Another Providence of God The Year 2016 has indeed proven to be a great illustration of God’s wonderful providence, especially in the SULADS Ministry. Every year, whenever we near the schedule for the upcoming training, we worry over the number of applicants. Despite the low count of trainees applicants we still continue in faith; planning the program, inviting speakers, printing out training materials, setting up the venue, and preparing accommodations. We are always held in suspense as the number of applicants still remain unpromising until the very day on which the training opens. We at the SULADS Office, fear that in this time and day no one seems to want to be part of the ministry anymore. Yet for the past years, God has proven to be true in calling to the ministry the people He deems fit and He always provides the ministry the missionaries which each diverse field needs. This year was no different! When the training for this year took place, God provided not only missionaries who can serve in already existing mission schools, but also more missionaries enough to serve in villages which had just opened up for the SULADS. As a result of having sufficient number of missionaries this year, we were able to open up new mission schools at Zubiri Village and Mambuntuan in Bukidnon; Kilobidan Tagbalihow, Marang, and Binikalan in Agusan; Latil in Davao; Lamoyon in South Cotabato; and Lanas-Lanas in Sultan Kudarat. We were also able to reopen the mission school in Dapiloan, Bukidnon. Another blessing which we have received this year, is the increased number of schools which are now recognized by the Department of Education. The recognition we received from our government agency means that students who are product of our literacy centers now have officilized education credits that will be honored by our country’s existing education Alternative Learning System, hence, after finishing in our elementary or secondary schools, our students can enter any college or university they wish to pursue their education in. Also, this year, we have the privilege to visit all the mission schools all over Mindanao. We have witnessed how the missionaries do an outstanding job in their designated villages. Muslim or Christian wherever we visit, all students in the different clusters, joyfully welcomed us with the singing of songs and hymns and by enthusiastically reciting memory verses they learned from their SULADS Teachers. It is very inspiring to hear the children’s sweet voices sing praises to our Creator! When visiting the villages, I got the chance to have a dialogue with the villagers and it was heartwarming to hear their earnest thanks for everything that the SULADS have done for the benefit of their children and for their villages as a whole. Aside from the apparent changes one can notice in the children, another positive difference one can observe while visiting the villages was the noticeable improvements in the villages state of cleanliness and its villagers sense of personal hygiene. As the SULADS Program continues to flourish, we have also began to establish a good name among local government units (LGUs) in the areas we penetrated. Often times, LGUs ask the assistance of SULADS whenever they wish to reach villages which have been left out by the local government services. Today, more areas have already requested to become recipients of SULADS. With God’s grace and His divine providence, we intend to open more schools and serve more people to prepare them for the trivialities of the modern world and for the coming of God’s kingdom above all else. Through the years of hardships and financial struggles, the SULADS Ministry has continued to grow and its fruits now prove as evidences of God’s providence. Words are not enough to convey just how thankful we are to the individuals and different groups and organizations who continue to respond to God’s call in helping support SULADS.

Evangelist’s Message

God’s Mysterious Work 2016 had been a meaningful, yet challenging year. For years, I have been serving as one of the SULADS Field Supervisors. However, God deemed it more necessary for me to become one of the SULADS full-time Evangelists. The change of my roles in the organization proved to be a bittersweet experience as I found myself not only changing my organizational position, but God was also changing me into a better person. In spite of my initial struggle, I believe that God is slowly changing me to be a more effective tool through which more souls can be reached. In this year alone, we were able to conduct six (6) Bible Seminars and Lectures. It was an amazing sight to behold as I witnessed how people’s lives change when they accepted Christ through baptism. This year proved to be truly fruitful as 200 souls from different walks of life opened their hearts to Christ through baptism and promised a lifelong commitment of following Him and helping the furtherance of the ministry. Truly, God works in mysterious ways!

adventistmuslim relations

Director’s Message This year has been filled with excitement due to the variety of colorful experiences, especially when exchanging ideas while brushing shoulders with our Muslim brothers and sisters. Highlights of the year includes countless seminars and trainings, dialogues and reunion programs with Muslims. Through the seminars and dialogues, Adventists are now well-accepted by the Muslims and are actually considered as their “brothers”! Muslims now consider Adventists as a group of “better Muslims” because of the lifestyle we embrace and our adherence to Biblical principles. Because of the recognition the Adventist Faith has received, our Muslim brothers now consider us “different’ from many other faiths who they think of as dirty pork-eating, and ungodly communities. One of the most significant activities we did this year were the visitations of Mosques to help repair its respective damages at one instance, the Muslim recipients could not mask their surprise and amazement as we brought construction materials to repair their Mosque’s roof. However, in return, I was as surprised and amazed as they were when they started inviting Adventists to join them for worship and even allowed me to preach while inside their Mosque! The drastic change in the Muslim and Adventist connection was such an unexpected development that at one prayer event, the Muslim congregation and their worship leader’s hearts were so moved that they found their selves in tears after they prayed. The Muslim and Adventists Brothers hugged each other in tight embraces, reaffirming their bond as true brothers by virtue of having Abraham, a father of both faiths. The Muslim’s trust in us became truly evident when they invited us to visit the rural and isloated war-torn areas dominated by non-governmental military forces. Such was the territory under the command to a military man who was specifically trained in Pakistan. Despite his formidable background, this leader actually told us, “Sir, please give us programs. I am tired of war, and I want my people to lay down their arms.” After he found out about the Adventist’s Program for peace, recondcilation, and encouragements to be steadfast in the faith while awaiting for Isa Al Masih (Jesus Christ) to return. These are very memorable words coming for a feared leader who opened the doors of a well-guarded territory to us. This 2017, more exciting events are yet in store as God has displayed that He has opened countless doors of opportunity for us to reach our brothers in faith through peace, faith respect, and the understanding of each other’s unique belief system. Truly God is now preparing His people as He invites one and all to witness for Him, the Master of the Universe.

school for the

deaf

Director’s Message Time quickly drifts by and just like that, another year has ended. With God’s Grace, the SULADS School for the Deaf at Malaybalay, Bukidnon continue its ministry. For the academic year 2015-2016, the school for the deaf had 15 enrollees who were able to finish the school year and were able to receive their certificates of completion. However, this year, our number of students increased and we now have 25 students enrolled for the current school year! Every academic year always brings me a roller coaster of emotions. Having previous students no longer return to school for various reasons always casts a damp blanket to my spirits, but I am at the same time encouraged as I witness our students who plead with their parents so they can continue to attend school. Also, I continually feel my spirit renewed whenever we welcome new students who have yet to discover the intricacies of learning formal sign language and the beauty of knowing God through reading the Bible. It is such a heart lifting experience to be part of the work force who teaches these young souls to pray, read and memorize the Bible, and to learn how to recite memory verse through sign language. One of the aspects we emphasize to our students is the need of prayer. It has become our joy to witness these kids pray before they proceed in their daily tasks; whether taking a meal, setting out to plant crops in their vegetable gardens or in the school farm, leaving for their homes, travelling to church or to town, or even at tasks as trivial as climbing a coconut tree. these kids have learned to make prayer a regular habit in their lives. Admittedly, sometimes thye remember to send out prayers more ofthen than I do. Such was my experience while I and Efren, a Deaf Student, were riding atop the SULADS Blue Jeep one Sabbath afternoon. We were on our way home from a Sabbath outing when I noticed Efren making hand gestures while his eyes were closed. I realized that he was praying, uncaring that at any unexpected movement of the vehicle could send him flying through the air. Concerned for his safety, I secured him by holding on tight to him. I found out that Efren was praying for our safe travel home. I was touched by Efren’s thoughtful gesture and quickly thanked God for such wonderful children, and also for the chance to serve them. This year has brought a lot of smiles to these children. During the National Literacy Award (NLA) Evaluation in Mountain View College, the children proudly presented an angklung (bamboo musical instrument played by shaking the instrument) rendition to the awed and surprised visitors. Seeing the guests appreciate the musical number brought untold joy to the hearts of the children. Also, this year was filled with excitement as the children witnessed how slowly by slowly, the walls and partitions of the ongoing construction for the female students dormitory progress. Parents of the children are also satisfied with how the SULADS Deaf School affects and influences their children. Aside from the sense of security the school provides, the parents truly appreciate the spiritual changes they notice in their children especially during Sabbath worships. This year, we also have an outstanding team in our work force. Not only do we have a Deaf professional teacher in the person of Mr. Khalil Haj, but the entire team was also able to attend seminars and workshops designed to improve our educational system as prepared by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Alternative Learning System. As we work alongside God, we know our ministry will still continue to bring more souls to Christ. As of now, we have at least 4 Deaf students awaiting baptism. Praise be to God for all the overflowing blessings he showered to the SULADS Deaf Ministry!

Praises Be Unto Him – the Source of All Blessings

Treasurer’s Message

Through all these years God has miraculously upheld SULADS. In His marvelous ways, SULADS has continued to perseveringly carry the torch of truth to enlighten and give hope to the remotest inhabitants on this side of the earth the Lumads. Given the privilege of being part of the SULADS Administration and being an active participant of the ministry this year, I now have a better grasp of the system’s strengths and weaknesses which have played as factors in its failures and successes. Records show and experiences tell that SULADS has existed all throughout these years because of God’s abounding grace and mercy working in the hearts and lives of individuals who are blessed to have the resources that help keep SULADS alive. Sadly, it has become evident that SULADS have become dependent on doll outs and donations. For this cause, the SULADS are now striving to employ our selves, time, strength, talents, and resources entrusted to us in the effort to improve the organization. It may take time but with God’s help coupled with sincere devotion, steady commitment, and diligent effort we will be able to sustain the organization and our mission to proclaim the gospel among our people and continue reach the unreached. With grateful hearts, we sincerely recognize the concerted efforts of many individuals who have dedicated their hearts, minds, hands, and souls for the SULADS’ Mission. To our sponsors and donors, may God continually increase your resources. We would like to thank Dr. Fred and Mrs. Arlene Webb for their unwavering passion for this ministry and their unfaltering support which has greatly helped in keeping SULADS alive. To Mountain View College, thank you for remaining as the school of the light who rekindles our SULADS brothers’ hopes for Adventist Education. We would also want to thank the Gospel Outreach and A Better World organizations for the quarterly financial assistance they generously contribute for the SULADS Annual operation. Also, we would like to thank the different Adventists Missions and Conferences who unfailingly sustains SULADS whenever we think we are running dry; namely SPUC, DM, NCMC, NEMM, SMM, WMC, and ZPM. To our partner, PAMAS (Philippines Adventist Medical and Aviation Services), thank you for the safe transportation services you provide whenever our SULADS brothers and sisters travel to their stations all over Philippines and whenever a Lumad brother or sister is in need of immediate medical attention. To the Adventist Medical Centers in the cities of Valencia and Iligan, thank you for the outstanding medical assistance and health cservices you render whenever SULADS Volunteers and our Lumad constituents are in need of your care. With grateful hearts we also wish to recognize the efforts our SULADS Pioneers who started this work with much missionary zeal, unmindful of the dangers, for the sake of sharing God’s love and saving grace. And to our SULADS Comrades out in the field, who follow the footsteps of our pioneers in keeping alive this legacy of undying commitment, we wish you to know that your dedication to “reaching the unreached’ is a constant source of inspiration to all of us. I pray that we may all nurture love, compassion, and understanding and stay firm in obeying God’s precepts as we continue to reach many who are yet to hear the good news of salvation. Let us all keep moving forward. We are nearing home.

Director’s Message

Media

Media went through some innovative changes in 2016 as Davao Hope Channel helped documented the diverse SULADS villages and events such as the jamboree producing several videos. In the beginning of the year, Ptr. Ephraim Pitogo wanted to set up a SULADS Online Radio in SULADS Main Office. However, due to poor internet connection, SULADS is not able to continue the Online Radio Program. We hope to bless more through our Facebook page posts: pictures of SULADS activities, tri-annual LALAG (Journal), and other updates. We sincerely hope to produce more inspiration to the work so that all may be blessed to hear and see what great blessings God has bestowed upon us. May God’s love always shine in the words and stories shared in our publications. Access video clips online through Vimeo

Support If the followers of Christ were awake to duty, there would be thousands where there is one today proclaiming the gospel in heathen lands. And all who could not personally engage in the work, would yet sustain it with their means, their sympathy, and their prayers. Steps to Christ, p. 81
