OBITUARIES

Con’s untimely passing leaves a huge gap in many lives. His standing within the Suffolk Breed, his work and the local community was evidenced by the massive crowds who gathered to pay their respects at his funeral. His wit, experience and knowledge will be sadly missed.

Fingask, Friarland, Glenisla, Knapps, Ladykirk, Muiresk, Santon, Thrunton, Tuxford and even from Tommy Delday’s Voyburn, then one of the only flocks on Orkney.

May he Rest in Peace.

Tups such as Kinmundy Elite were selected shrewdly, the majority in partnership with and with the support of John Campbell, Thrunton. Bridgestone Bullyboy, Birness Braveheart, Collessie Kelso, Fyvie Falcon, the Fyvie Classic son Fordafourie Lionheart, his grandson Fordafourie Bullseye (Cairness Comrade) and the influential Glenisla Ivanhoe (Kirkton Finale), the latter shared in a three way split with the Aynsley’s.

John Hepburn

11th May 1958 16th September 2015 Founder manager and shepherd of the “FLODDEN” Flock from 1984 - 1997 Son of a shepherd and a staunch, proud Northumbrian, after leaving Kirkley Hall Agricultural College John shepherded in North Northumberland before landing the post in 1984 for new breeder Mr Jonathan Hayward (son of Wolverhampton Wanders’ entrepreneurial owner, ‘Sir Jack’) at East Learmouth, Cornhill-on-Tweed. Here he pioneered the highly successful “FLODDEN” Flock of Suffolks and a fold of Highland Cattle, supported by Lancastrianborn wife Lynda (nee Gardner) and his young sons who were integral to the “Flodden” enterprise. Initially, judicial Female purchases were made from renowned Flocks such as Barrons’, Beechpark, Boothferry, Boreland, Evandale,

By the mid 1990’s the Flodden Flock had expanded to 114 registered ewes.

Westcarse Waltzer was loaned from near neighbour and great friend Gordon Turnbull, Cookstead. Acquisition of the successful Pankymoor Prelude son Muiresk Moneymaker 78033, who had such an onward influence on Flodden genetics, soon followed. Most unfortunately, in the late 90’s a breakdown of communication between Jonathan Hayward and John also followed, so John took self-employment. Besides livestock contract work he qualified as a Farm Quality Assurance Inspector for the UK’s ‘Red Tractor’ scheme in Beef, Lamb & Combinable Crops, a post which took him all over the UK - and he was an SGHS ‘shows & sales’ MV Inspector.
