Green builder IDC reports 142% jump in net income in 2015

Publicly listed Italpinas Development Corporation (IDC) posted phenomenal growth in 2015.

IDC reported that its sales soared by 62 percent to P216.5 million in 2015, a reflection of the success of its award winning Primavera Residences, a green building in Cagayan de Oro City.

In its disclosure for the year ending 2015, IDC said its operating income more than doubled to P51.1 million in 2015, or 129 percent higher than 2014’s P22.3 million.

Davao City dads okay ordinance on separate area for halal products

Two NGCP towers in Carmen town bombed DAVAO City––Two towers of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in North Cotabato were bombed on Tuesday morning.

Towers 95 and 96, located in Brgy.

Kitulaan and Brgy. Aroman, Carmen in North Cotabato, were not completely destroyed, according to NGCP spokesperson for Mindanao Milfrance Capulong in her Facebook post.

But she clarified that personnel of the NGCP can only start restoring the towers if the area is already secured.

“The company stresses that the bombings only serve to increase the burden of the public, which must suffer through service interruptions when towers are bombed,” she said.

She added the NGCP “appeals to the local community and its leaders to help identify the perpetrators of the bombings to prevent longer power interruptions.”

SSS collects over Php0.6-M in contribution and loan payments thru Globe GCash DAVAO City -- The Social Security System (SSS) has collected nearly Php650,000 in contributions and loan payments of self-employed and voluntary members through the Globe GCash facility by the end of the first quarter this year.

tions which amounted to Php511,575 while the remaining Php136,845 were for members’ loan amortizations.

“Enabling SSS payments through Globe GCash aims to capitalize on the widespread use of mobile phones which have penetrated even the most distant areas of the country. Instead of spending much time, money and effort to go to the nearest SSS branch or to our accredited partners, members can just use their mobile phones to pay their contributions and loans,” Malto said.

Members must be prepaid or postpaid Globe or Touch Mobile subscribers to use the GCash facility.

To register, members can dial *143#, select “GCash” and key in the desired fourdigit Personal Identification Number (PIN) along with their first name, last name

and address.

Another way to register is by downloading the GCash mobile application, click “New to GCash? Register” and enter the desired four-digit PIN, first name, last name and address.

SSS payments sent thru GCash have no transaction fee. GCash also offers members a safe means for paying their contributions and amortizations for salary and real estate loans, since users are required to provide their PIN during every transaction for added security.

“Another advantage of using GCash is that the

contribution and loan payments would be immediately posted in the SSS database the following day. Members would also be informed through text message if their payment has been duly received by the GCash system,” Malto said.

Contribution payment deadlines of self-employed and voluntary members depend on the last digit of their Social Security (SS) number. The deadline is the 10th day after the applicable month or quarter if the last digit is 1 or 2, the 15th day if 3 or 4, the 20th day if 5 or 6, the 25th day if 7 or 8, and on the last day of the month if 9 or 10.

premiums on or before Jan. 31 of the following year. Member loans, on the other hand, must be paid monthly, with the deadline also based on the last digit of the SS number.

Malto urged selfemployed and voluntary members, including those from the informal sector, to consider GCash as their SSS payment channel. Farmers, fisherfolk and OFWs are already among those who have started using GCash for their SSS contribution and loan payments.

“We also invite members who are active GCash users to help us spread the good news about this innovative facility so that more workers would likewise benefit from the ease and convenience that GCash offers. Plans are underway to add more SSS services to the GCash system,” he said.

P500m Bulk water project breaks ground today in Opol

OPOL, Mis Or -- A Php500million private investment for the bulk water supply project of Opol, Miamis Oriental will hit ground today at 8:00am in Lumayagan River, Barangay Tingalan, Opol, Misamis Oriental.

Top executives of AB Bulk Water Company Inc headed by Dr. Walter Brown and Robertino Pizarro, chairman and president of A Brown Company Inc, respectively will lead the groundbreaking ceremony to herald the start of the water system regarded as the flagship project of Mayor Max Seno for the people of Opol, Mis Or. The landmark event will be attended by municipal officials of Opol led

by Mayor Max Seno, Vice Mayor Thatsie Ortigosa, members of the Sangguniang Bayan of Opol and Congresswoman Juliette Uy of the Ist Disrict of Mis Or. Also on hand to grace the special event are barangay officials from Opol poblacion, Awang, Bagocboc and host barangay Tingalan.

The bulk water project is expected to benefit some 25,000 residents of Opol and will be carried out under the Private-Public Partnership (PPP).

4, 2014.

Late last year, AB Bulk Water Company, Inc., a subsidiar y of A Brown Company, Inc has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the Local Government Unit of Opol for the implementation of the town’s bulk water project.

The bulk water supply project has already done a detailed feasibility study for the construction of the 20-kilometer pipeline from the water source in Lumayagan River located in barangay Tingalan toward Opol poblacion.

On top of the FS study, the project has also obtained water rights, the Environment Compliance Certificate (ECC), and the

Comprehensive Development Management Plan (CDMP) from DENR for the development of 136-hectare watershed for the bulk water project.

The company would employ the “membrane technology” where the water that would reach every household in Opol is guaranteed potable equivalent to the commercially-produced mineral water.

The “membrane technology” is a very precise water treatment that even the water molecules could be controlled.

The project also provides top-of-the line facilities where the bulk water supply is guaranteed to last up to 25 years as stipulated in the contract.

Misamis Oriental Gov. Bambi Emano welcomes new regional director of Philippine National Police Region 10, Police Chief Supt. Jose L. Gentiles who took over the regional command from Police Chief Supt. Lyndel Desquitado in ceremonies held yesterday at Cmp Alagar.

The ‘Flavor of the Month’

WHAT does one thinks of an error in the readings of the ballot? What if the vote counting machine (VCM) commits the error in reading the ballots? Or, what if the VCM jams and fail to produce the “voter’s receipts?”

What about the statement of administration candidate Mar Roxas that, in spite of consistently tailing in various political surveys in the past, he would become the “flavor of the month” in the May 9 presidential polls?

Few questions, with many an answer and opinion.

Here are some apprehensions that the Cynosure would like to share with the readers about the VCM errors on reading the ballots that reportedly reads “Under Vote.”

For the information of the readers, an “Under Vote” readings in the VCM would mean that the name of the candidate voted upon would not appear on the ballot, but only the word “Under Vote.”

For instance a vote for “Duterte” and any other presidential candidate

would simply appear “Under Vote” in the VCM machine.

In this instance, a vote for “Duterte” would not be counted because the word “Under Vote” would appear in the VCM instead of “Duterte.”

The same instance, would also happen in other national and local candidates. There is an apprehension that only the names of the administration’s favored candidates were programmed to be deciphered by the VCM. Another case is the fear that even if one votes for Duterte, Binay, or Poe, only

Well, a voter could see the name that he or she voted upon in the voter’s receipt.

Beware! Any election protest would prove futile because the Roxas name would emerge as the majority vote during the “actual and manual counting of votes” of the receipts stored in the ballot boxes.

The rub is, with the technology at hand, the name of Duterte, Binay, or Poe would be erased and be replaced with the name of Roxas in the voter’s receipt a minute or two inside the ballot boxes.

Call it magic, but that is how the technology works today. Who would believe that cloning a human being is now possible? Anything that was once impossible is now possible – like magic.

Thus, changing the printed name of a person in a “specially manufactured paper and ink” for the purpose replacing the favored name is no longer impossible.

This means that both words are already listed. However, I perceived that the word “Filipinos” means the person like the word “Americans” the people, English is the language spoken by American, and “America” indicates the country.

Also,” Indonesia” is the country; “Indonesian” means not only the people but also the language. Since, we (Indonesians) do not speak English as the national

language; we have only the national language that is Indonesian. Most of my friends as I met chatting in the socmed, always say that my national language is “Bahasa.” Yet, it is not “Bahasa” but completely it is “Bahasa Indonesia” (Indonesian language or simply “Indonesian”).

‘Itmigim’ THE first batch of the Grade 10 completers, that’s how the education department calls the supposed “high school” graduates of the 10-year basic education program.

Everything has changed after President Benigno Aquino III signed into law on March 15, 2013 Republic Act 10533, commonly known as the K+12 basic education program.

The K+12 makes education in the kindergarten mandatory before a child can be enrolled in Grade 1. Also under the K+12, a student must complete the six-year cycle before he or she can be considered “high school graduate.” Those students who hurdle grades 7, 8, 9, and 10 will be called Grade 10 completers or, completers of the Junior High School (JHS).

Those parents, who can still afford to enroll their children in grades 11 and 12, will be lucky, according to the education department because their kids will be equipped with skills being offered in the SHS. Selling of liquor, cigarettes to students

CAGAYAN de Oro City Councilor Adrian Barba recently appealed for support in the government’s campaign against the selling of liquors and cigarettes to high school and college students.

Councilor Barba also asked the Regulatory and Complaint Board (RCB) to implement the law that regulates the selling of “sin products” to students.

The rampant selling of “sin products” to students even if regulated or, prohibited by law has remained a problem anywhere. It is true in Cagayan de Oro City and elsewhere in the province of Bukidnon.

It is high time that local and school officials, including the parents to band together and join the fight against the selling of cigarettes

and liquor not only to students but to minors, as well.

Section 10 of Republic Art 9211 prohibits the sale of tobacco products within one hundred meters from any point on the perimeter of a school, public playground or other facility frequented particularly by minors, according to the report published in Mindanao Daily News, a local newspaper.

Under the law, the sale or distribution to, as well as the purchase of, by any minor of cigarettes and other tobacco products are also absolutely prohibited, the report added.

This provision is more often disregarded even by those parents, who use to smoke, as they send their children to store to buy a stick or, a pack of cigarettes. I even saw a child carrying a bottle of beer.

Conducted on March 28-April 3, 2016 and gathered from 1,932 respondents representing one percent of the voting population of each of this city’s 86 barangays, the survey results showed neophyte Lagnada was preferred by 47.62

percent over reelectionist Mayor Ferdinand Amante, Jr. who got 35.61 percent.

Lagnada’s latest score was a significant climb of 5.42 percent from 42.20 percent he garnered in the first survey as voter’s preference for Amante decreased by 1.54 percentage points from 37.15 percent.

Understanding the four career tracks in SHS

IN June this year, the first batch of the Grade 10 completers will troop to school offering any of the four career tracks for Grade 11 and Grade 12 students.

The Grade 11 and Grade 12, are the required additional two years under the revised Philippine educational system, after President Benigno Aquino III signed into law Republic Act 10533 or, the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013, which gave birth to the K+12 basic education program.

Aside from the core curriculum comprising eight learning areas, the SHS or, Senior High School comes with specific career tracks just like the college courses.

These include the Academic, Arts and Design, Sports, and Technical-VocationalLivelihood (TVL).

Each SHS student must choose one track to master.

The Academic. This career track prepares students who plan to pursue college education and comprises four strands. These are a) ABM – Accountancy, Business, and Management; b) STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; c) HUMMS – Humanities

and Social Science; and, d) General Academic.

Arts and Design. This track covers nine subjects, eight of which require 80 hours each per semester.

Sports. This track has nine subjects, which include Safety and First Aid, Human Movement, Coaching, Sports Officiating, and Sports Leadership.

TVL. This track contains nine subjects (known as the TVL track subjects) and TESDA specialized subjects such as a) Home Economics; b) Agri-Fishery; c) Industrial Arts; and, d) Information and Communications Technology or ICT.

THE GREAT DEBATE about mass media usually revolves around these issues: in formation vs. entertainment; culture vs. relaxation; enlightenment vs. propaganda; escapism vs. reality. Studies have been made of audience attitudes, tastes, and habits regarding the choice and use of the various offerings by the mass media.

The results have generally shown a rather low level of taste and a passivity that indicates a poor response.

Therefore, it is imperative in our democratic society to try to establish some standards of excellence rather than to continue the trend downward.

Some of the criticisms heard are the following;” The newspapers deal with

crime, sex and violence. The radio broadcast news, noise and ballyhoo. Television is a wasteland of dullness.

The movies have forgotten the code of decency. The magazines have a trickle of stories and amid pages that try to sell costumers things they do not need.’’

Are these accusations true or exaggerated?

Either you learn how to use mass media, or the mass media merchants will use you! The influence of these sources of information and entertainment is very deep and lasting on a generation surrounded by experts in brainwashing and peddlers of hogwash. But education offers hope. If you are willing to learn and to tell the difference between the fact and opinion, between communication and propaganda, you can retain some of your individual power of thought. If you develop the kind of taste that will refer a symphony to a western, an- editorial about current problems to a lurid story about a sensational crime, then you may keep a balanced personality.

LUCENA City, Quezon–– Religious leaders in the Southern Tagalog region, social movements, and civil society groups come together in Lucena to add their voice to the global call to “Break Free” from coal and other dirty and harmful energy. It is part of “Break Free from Fossil Fuels 2016”, a global climate movement effort against key fossil fuel projects across the world.

Piglas Pilipinas is calling for a moratorium on all coal-fired power plants in the entire country. The launch in Lucena is part of build-up activities leading to a 10,000-strong mobilization on May 4 in the Batangas Provincial Sports Complex to stop the building of a 600-megawatt coal plant in Batangas City, which comes just days before the May 9 national elections. Mass actions are scheduled until May 15 in other countries such as Indonesia, Nigeria, Brazil, the United States, Germany, and Australia.

El Niño, grassfire force ‘Silangan’ the crocodile out of its home ground

KABACAN, North Cotabato--Rising temperature, grassfire and destruction of its natural habitat have forced freshwater crocodiles to wander to areas inhabited by humans.

An 8-feet long, 80-kilo crocodile (Crocodylus Mindorensis) was captured by fisherfolk led by Mamangkas Mamatong, in Barangay Kuyapon, Kabacan, North Cotabato Monday last week.

Officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the University of Southern Mindanao named the crocodile “Silangan” since it was captured on the eastern side of the 200,000 hectare marshland.

Mamatong said he was

shocked to see the huge reptile trapped inside the indigenous fish trap they installed at the marsh.

He then alerted his relatives and villagers and jointly they seized the crocodile, which initially tried to resist captivity.

It took them days to report to authorities as Mamatong and villagers thought at first of making money out of the catch by selling it to anyone interested but they were told it would be illegal to capture and sell crocodiles, a critically endangered species.

Mamatong and other freshwater fisherfolk said life has become very difficult due to the drought.

Crocodile researchers of the state-run University of Southern Mindanao here and DENR-12 decided to

take possession of the reptile which it immediately brought to the Crocodile Rescue and Breeding Area in the North Cotabato provincial capitol grounds in Amas, Kidapawan City.

The crocodile sustained injuries during its captivity by fisherfolk who used traditional means to overpower a huge animal.

Dr. Cayetano Pomares of USM-Kabacan who has a preservation program, studies and research of critically endangered Ligawasan Marsh crocodiles said the crocodile population has dwindled.

“There around a hundred to two hundred… since the breeding pace is so slow, according to our study,” he said.

Pomares said the captured crocodile was among

the remaining reptiles in Ligawasan Marsh.

What triggered the crocodiles to come out was blamed on the “on and off ” grassfire in the dried up portion of the marsh, forcing the reptiles to migrate to other areas where food is available, he said.

“Humans catch fish from the marshland and fish species in the marsh are also the crocodile’s favorite food,” Pomares explained.

Citing climate change, Pomares said there is “some sort of a tug of war between reptiles and humans for food, in this case the fresh water fish.”

‘Mentoring the mentors’ to boost reading mission CALL it mentoring the mentors, a refreshing and intensive approach for effective teaching in reading.

This was how the teacher-participants, including the school administrators from Villanueva and Tagoloan towns bill a two-day training-seminar on beginning reading initiated by FDC Misamis Power Corporation (FDC Misamis), in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Philippines and the Department of Education (DepEd), held at the Mindanao University of Science and Technology (MUST) in Cagayan de Oro City recently.

Together with the Tagoloan district supervisor, 37 principals and Grade 1 teachers participated in the Ronald McDonald Read To Learn (RMRL), a flagship program of RMHC, designed to address the problem on non-readers among Grade 1 pupils all over the country. RMRL is in response to DepEd’s study that four out of the ten first graders in public schools finish the level as non-readers.

RMHC is McDonald’s Corporation’s charity of choice established in the Philippines. Sharing RMHC’s passion to make a difference in the lives of Filipino children, FDC Misamis adopted RMRL for the benefit of Villanueva and Tagoloan teachers and kids, where it is completing the construction of its power

plant project scheduled for operations within the year.

FDC Misamis, a member of the Gotianun– led Filinvest Development Corporation, believes that the best seed to sow on solid ground is that on education.

ANSWER TO FRUSTRATIONS “Truly an answer to our frustrations in our quest to have zero nonreaders in our school every end of school year,” was how attendee Gladys Banac, principal of Sta. Ana Elementary School in Tagoloan, illustrated the RMRL. She added, “I think this is not just for Grade 1 but also for higher grade levels or from Grade IV and Grade VI because we still have quite a number of non-readers in these grades every end of school year.”

“And, having always these slow and nonreaders in every grade is quite alarming. So, thanks to RMRL for providing our teachers new strategies on how to attack the problem on slow and nonreaders.”

It could be one of the factors to attaining quality kids with quality education in Tagoloan and Villanueva, the lady principal hoped.

PAINFUL, UPHILL CHALLENGE But Titus Cruz, Head Teacher III of Dayawan Elementary School, a kilometer away from Villanueva’s town poblacion, has a different perspective about the problem on non-readers.

“Teaching kids how to read and understand what they’re reading is really a tall challenge to all Grade 1 teachers.”

Cruz, also a participant in the training, quipped: “Well, nice to have this ‘unique’ kind of teachers’ training that will equip our Grade 1 teachers new techniques and approaches to further intensify their passion in teaching reading.”

He expressed his “lamentation” over a dilemma on non-readers.

Cruz said that, most of the time, teachers are blamed for having nonreaders in their respective classes.

“And this is “painful” on the part of our teachers whom we believe are doing their very best in teaching kids,” he stressed.

“Because no matter how good the teachers in teaching reading, still they have to fight two giant enemies before attaining a perfect 100 percent readers in their class.”

And these two enemies, he said, are both the economic standing and educational background of the parents.

Kids coming from poor families tend to be absent in their classes to prioritize helping their parents in their daily grind, he explained, adding, “So, reading for them is nothing!”

There are also parents who fail to mentor their kids at home, thus relying on the teachers to educate or better their kids’ future, emphasized Cruz.

These kinds of

dilemma, therefore, directly or indirectly affect the reading capability of some, if not the majority, of the public school pupils in Villanueva, Cruz related.

He believed that these problems must be addressed not only by the school but perhaps by the government. If not, the goal to attaining 100 percent readers in class, especially in Grade 1, would remain an “uphill challenge” among Grade 1 teachers.

“But still we have no choice but to abide by the order of DepEd to have zero non-readers every end of school year.

Therefore, we need to institute interventions, and holding of remedial classes in reading is one among those.”

Cruz expresses gratefulness to private entities like FDC Misamis and RMHC “for having initiatives in mentoring the mentors on new strategies and techniques in teaching reading.”

BIG BOOKS THAT ENCOURAGE READING For Grade 1 teacher Daisy Mar Balendres of Tambobong-Balacanas Integrated School (TBIS) in Villanueva, the big reading books given after the RMRL training will make her teaching methods more effective this coming school year.

“I can now imagine myself teaching in the midst of interested pupils who are eager to learn and read because of the big books given to us.”

This, as she noted that lack of reading materials, especially the giant and colorful books, can lead to a “dull” class.

“But having now these big books, for sure, my pupils will be attracted to learn reading.”

RMRL kits, composed of 34 big books, pupils’ worksheets and teachers’ lesson plans, are distributed to participating schools as part of the program. The books that are included in the kit are developed in partnership with Adarna House.

ENHANCED TEACHING ABILITIES Meanwhile, Dr. Edna Albaran, District-In Charge of DepEdTagoloan, foresees to have a throng

of Tagoloan teachers having enhanced teaching abilities in reading in their district soon.

The RMRL, she said, was so helpful to them, especially in equipping teachers with the new strategies and techniques in teaching reading.

Albaran hoped RMRL participants will apply what they have learned while Banac wished for the sustainability of the program.

Both FDC Misamis and RMHC vowed to do constant monitoring and follow-throughs on the program implementation to help ensure that DepEd does achieve its goal of zero non-readers in the country.*

Here’s how: Maintain a balanced diet. See to it that the food you eat everyday contains the necessary nutrients that our body needs.

Drink plenty of water.

Water replenishes the lost fluids in our body. The human body needs plenty of water in order to function well. Drink 8 to 10 glasses a day or as you can.

Have a regular bowel movement. Storing toxins in our body causes us to be sick and uncomfort-

able. Eat fruits and fibrous vegetables.

Exercise daily. To maintain good body tone one should work out or do a little walking every day. Moving parts of our body helps one remove some body stress and it prevents aging.

Take a bath every day.

To be free from any kind of illness, one should maintain good hygiene and it makes our body alive and fresh.

Get enough sleep. Our body needs rest from a day’s work. It needs to repair the worn out tissues.

Do all these daily and you will be doctor away.

A productive and wealthy individual is someone who is healthy.

Go ahead and show her,

John.” And so the reading continues until all have their opportunity to read a section “cold.” At this point, I instruct them to take out a piece of paper for comprehension test. I assure them that because they have read the text, they should have no difficulty passing the test.

“Will the score be calculated into our grade for this course?” they ask. “Certainly,” I respond. “If it’s important enough for class time, surely it’s important enough to consider when looking at your overall performance.” As the teachers reluctantly take out their papers, I can contain myself no longer. “Forget the Test,” I say. “Let’s talk instead about what just what happen and how you might have been feeling about it.” The classroom erupts as the teachers share their feelings of anxiety and relief. NGCP donates Multi Purpose Covered Court to Patag Elem. School

National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) saw the numerous needs of Patag Elementary school, Patag, Opol, Misamis Oriental. NGCP who has a sub-office in Patag, Opol, Misamis Oriental has become one of the many active stakeholders of the school.

Due to lack of classrooms, the school stage was utilized as classroom by another Grade IV class since it has to be divided into two classes due to the swell of enrollees. Given that the school stage was utilized as classroom, school programs and other school activities has to be done outside beneath the shade of the trees.

Hence, NGCP saw the vital need of a Multi-Purpose Covered Court where the learners could utilize it on various school programs and school activities wherein they could present their talents and abilities learned in the classrooms. NGCP donated the P2M Multi Purpose Covered Court to our school to the delight of everybody including the teachers and most especially the school children.

As to this date, the Multi Purpose Covered Court is now finished and is now waiting for the schedule of the formal turning over ceremony to Patag Elementary School however, so many school activities has already been held like the

recent National Deworming for all school children and the Early Registration.

Patag Elementary School urgently needs at least 13 classrooms for the reason that some of the old rooms are no longer secure and has to be demolished and some classes just make do

with makeshifts classrooms. But with the NGCPs donated MultiPurpose Covered Court, we, the teachers, pupils and parents are very much hopeful that donations of classrooms from various parties/agencies are now in the offing.

The aestheticity of these designs which are pleasing to the eyes will definitely help improve the grades of students. One does not need to commission researches to prove this. Of course, anybody – student or not – will be comfortable staying in a place which looks good.

First, desig n puts the user at the center.

Although students are the end users of schools and the educaiton system, more often than not, school buildings are designed for industrialstyle efficient education rather than student-centric

education. That was the traditional way.

But listening to students as end users of schools and the education system might help us see how to move away from cookie-cutter methods of schoolbuilding and instruction to customize education for each school.

Here’s an example of a library that facilitates sound learning – the library has its books displayed front, facing to inspire teens to take them from the shelves and the shelves are aligned to consumer heights to allow library users to reach all books. A doodle wall facilitates collaborative discussions, a mezzanine space legitimizes hanging out and cozy corners allow quiet reading. That is sound design.

“Our advocacy for renewable energy and our anti-coal stance is deeply rooted in our yearning for the renewal and transformation of lives and communities,” said Father Raul Enriquez of Pagbilao Quezon “The Philippines have committed a 70% emission reduction in the international negotiations, yet contradicted its pledge making way for our own destruction. We stand firm on our demand; shift to renewable energy, the time to act is now. We strongly support the call to break free from coal,” said Louise Alcalde, advocacy officer of Aksyon Klima.

“From mining to combustion coal is the most polluting of all fossil fuels.

The world doesn’t need more coal, it needs an energy revolution. That is why we need build power among grassroots groups who are at the frontlines of resistance against coal, and mobilize to shift the political power away from the coal industry,” added Aaron Pedrosa, who heads the energy working group of the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice.

The leaders of the Piglas campaign spoke of six demands of the national campaign, namely: (1) Cancel all plans, permits and construction stage for coal-fired power plants in Batangas and the rest of the country; (2) implement a program for a swift phase out of the 19 existing coal-fired power plants nationwide; (3) close down all coal mines beginning with Semirara and cancel all plans and permits for new coal mines; (4) mobilize domestic and international climate finance and implement a comprehensive program for a quick transition to clean and renewable energy; (5) ensure a just transition to clean and renewable energy; and (6) implement a community-managed rehabilitation program for all local communities and ecosystems affected by coal plants and coal mines.
