Cine Europa 17 culminates in Cagayan de Oro

oviegoers from C ag ayan d e Oro continue to enjoy family-oriented films from this year's Cine Europa film festival.

The 17th edition of Cine Europa comes to a close November 14 at Liceo de Cagayan de Oro with the screening of the German film "Scherbenpark" or Broken Glass Park directed by Bettina Blümner. "Scherbenpark" or Broken Glass Park tells the story of how Sascha, a clever girl with the gift of gab has witnessed her stepfather Vadim kill her mother. When Sascha reads a newspaper article claiming Vadim is a sensitive man who is full of remorse, this is the last straw. But then events take an unexpected turn. Sherbenpark was the perfect film for Cagayan de Oro as the Goethe Institut, the Cultural Institute of Germany in the Philippines, intends to highlight its partnership with Liceo de Cagayan University which was forged last year and which made Liceo the fourth official partner school of Germany. Twenty-one films from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech

Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland will be screened from 13 to 16 November. Mr Lubomir Frebort, Political Counsellor, EU Delegation to the Philippines, will inaugurate Cine Europa in Cagayan de Oro together with Cagayan de Oro Mayor Oscar Moreno and Mr Mariano Lerin of Liceo de Cagayan University. LPCC, DTI enjoins retailers to only sell certified Christmas lights ILIGAN CITY – With Christmas just around the corner several retailers and business establishments in Iligan City has started selling Christmas lights and decors. The Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) of Iligan City joined hands with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Iligan as lead agency in the conduct of a briefing for retailer and business establishment selling Christmas lights and decors. Devero, Trade and Indust r y Specialist of DTI lead the meeting on the discussion of Standardization and Conformity Assessment for Christmas Lights during the meeting on November 12, 2014 at DTI Office to make sure that substandard Christmas lights and decors will not reach consumers. In addition to this he advised the twenty two (22) invited participants from various department stores and store retailers to check the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) mark on the products they sell especially Christmas lights used for the holiday season. Authentic ICC marks have a hologram and serial

numbers and products are certified by the Bureau of Philippine Standard (BPS). Both marks indicate that the products passed the government’s quality and safety tests. Meanwhile Minda M. Usman, Senior Trade and Industry Specialist of DTI disclosed in her message that the meeting is for the compliance of entrepreneurs selling Christmas lights and decors. LPCC together with the DTI will soon conduct a market inspection to ensure that no fake products are being sold. Christmas lights and decors with no BPS and ICC seal will be confiscated. For the first time Cine Europa will be seen in nine cities over the Philippine archipelago- Manila, Baguio, Iloilo, Cebu, Leyte, Tacloban, Davao, Zamboanga and Cagayan De Oro. History of Cine Europa Cine Europa which started out 17 years ago with screenings only in Manila, continues to expand to the provinces with screenings this year planned in 9 Filipino cities. With movies being shown between September and November 2014 Cine Europa is certainly amongst the longest, if not the longest, Film Festival in the Philippines.

Cine Europa moved to eight other cities: Baguio City Cinematheque from 23 to 28 September followed by Iloilo City Cinematheque from 30 September to 5 October and then Ayala Center Cinema in Cebu City from 10 to 12 October. In Mindanao, Cinematheque Davao City will host Cine Europa from 28 October to 2 November. It then moves on to Cinematheque in Zamboanga City from 4 to 9 November before concluding with screenings in Liceo de Cagayan University in Cagayan de Oro City from 13 to 16 November. The film festival this year has a total of 23 movies from Aus-

tria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland. Admission is free for all screenings at all locations for the two-month festival. Cine Europa 17 is organised by the European Union Cultural Group in Manila and is funded by the European Embassies and Cultural Institutes accredited to the Philippines including the Embassies of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Spain, Slovak Republic, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, the Delegation of the European Union to the Philippines, Alliance Française, British Council, Goethe-Institut, Philippine-Italian Association, and the Instituto Cervantes de Manila with the important contribution of the Film Development Council of the Philippines. ARMM’s ‘Kite for Peace’ to amplify children’s stand against armed conflict

MARAWI CIT Y, L anao del Sur - More than 13,000 children from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) will simultaneously fly their kites from their assigned areas on November 25 to amplify their stand against violence and armed conflict. The Department of Education (DepED)-ARMM, in partnership with the Coordinating and Development Office of the Bangsamoro Youth Affairs (CDO-BYA), organized the kite flying activity to help advocate children’s rights and as part of the 25th founding anniversary of the ARMM. T h e a c t iv it y i s a l s o being supported by the

Young Moro Professionals Network (YMPN), Anak Mindanao (AMIN) Partylist, and the Coalition of Organization for Reform and Empowerment (COREARMM). Leah Tarhata Mehila, YMPN coordinator and secretariat, said the “Kites for Peace” in the ARMM is a collaborative activity to convey the message of peace, especially among the most vulnerable sector in conflict areas, the children. “We also wish to set up a new record as to the most number of children who will fly kites simultaneously and surpass the Guiness World Record holder, Gaza, Palestine, with 13,000 kids

in 2011,” she said. Regional Governor Mujiv S. Hataman will lead the kite flying at the ARMM comp ound in C otabato City, a major venue for the event, which is also the kick-off day for the Mindanao Week of Peace, a part of the ARMM’s silver jubilee celebration. Apart from the open spaces along school premises, the activity will be simultaneously held all over the ARMM, to include the Mindanao State University oval in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur ; DepED oval in Tawi-tawi; Capitol grounds in Sulu; Lamitan National High S chool ground in Basilan; and MSU-Dalican

in Maguindanao. A memorandum has been issued by the DepEDARMM to ensure mass participation of the 2,000 public elementary schools within the autonomous region. Pupils from grade 3 to 6 are enjoined to take part in the activity with at least 10 kites for each section. ARMM line agencies, local government officials, peace stakeholders, civil society organizations, youth groups, and representatives from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front have expressed their support and participation in the event.
