MANILA – The social action and development arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Monday called for a cleaner electoral process ahead of this year’s Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).

A temporary restraining order (TRO) was issued against Raul Villanueva for continuing to represent Philsaga Mining Corporation (PMC) and hindering position takeover despite the termination of his contract on February 15.

The TRO was issued by Regional Trial Court (RTC)

Judge Rowena Apao-Adlawan and was served by Sheriff Teresita Ceballos at PMC’s administration building.

Villanueva, who is no longer part of the company’s Board of Directors, sold to Joseph Mahusay his shares of stocks with Philsaga Management and Holdings, amounting to 125,000 common

Mahusay, the current and legal president of PMC, filed a writ of injunction against Villanueva due to the latter’s violation of the employment contract with X64, the Australian partner company of PMC, which holds 40% of their shares.

Yes, what it reminds us of is that we need to reflect and channel the very Trinitarian life of God in our own life. That means that just as in God there are three persons who are perpetually engaged in perfect knowing and loving, we too should try our best to know and love God and everybody else all our life the way God knows and loves himself and all his creation, especially us.

And the way to do that is to follow what Christ himself told us as the new commandment we need to live, and that is to love one another as he himself has loved us. Following that new commandment of Christ would necessarily link us in a living way to God the Father and the God the Holy Spirit in the way Christ is linked with these two other persons in the Trinitarian God.

We should try that our knowledge of God and of everybody and everything else should be as perfect as God knows himself and everybody else. This perfect divine knowledge is personified in God the Son, who as God who became man offers us the “way, the truth and the life.”

We have to be properly known the way God the Son, the pattern of our humanity, is known perfectly by the Father. In other words, our knowledge of God and everybody else should go as faithfully as possible as the knowledge God has of himself and of everybody and everything else --a knowledge that is personified in the Son.

And we have to love God and everybody else the way God loves himself and everybody and everything else, as personified in the Holy Spirit. This is what Trinity Sunday in the end reminds us of.

In the above-cited gospel, we are told that only when we believe in Christ, “the way, the truth and the life” for us, can we avoid condemnation. (cfr. Jn 3,18) And believing in Christ precisely involves the process of knowing and loving God the way Christ knows and loves God and everybody else. Only then can we reflect and channel God’s Trinitarian life in our life.

In his visit to Barangay Anislag where he led the distribution of family food packs, Secretary Rex Gatchalian said he was instructed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos to ensure the preparedness of the department to assist families who were evacuated from the Mayon’s 6-kilometer (km) radius permanent danger zone.

“Instructed by President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos na siguraduhin na ang preparation ng gobyerno lalo na ng DSWD ay in place (to ensure that the preparation of the government especially by DSWD is in place),” Gatchalian said during a press briefing.

He said there are about 102,000 family food packs (FFP) that have been positioned in Bicol and neighboring provinces and are ready for distribution, good for the next 45 days.

“There are 60,000 in Albay and the 42,000 FFPs are in neighboring provinces that we can easily pull out. We are still stockpiling so it is easy to get. The DSWD is ready to make sure the needs will be supplied in terms of food by affected evacuees and residents. The President’s instruction is to ensure that no one is hungry

Data from the Albay Public Safety Emergency Management Office showed 4,390 families or 16,823 individuals from nine municipalities namely, Camalig, Daraga, Guinobatan, Ligao City, Malilipot, Tabaco City, Sto. Domingo, Bacacay and Legazpi City, are affected.

Another 40,000 individuals are set to be evacuated from the 7-km extended danger zone if Mayon’s status is escalated to Alert Level 4.

DBP offers credit assistance to expand water sources amid El Niño

MANILA – The state-owned Development of the Bank of the Philippines (DBP) has offered to provide credit assistance to water districts, local government units, and water utility firms to expand production capacity and explore additional water sources amid the looming onset of the El Niño phenomenon.

The DBP funding assistance would be channeled under its pioneering Water for Every Resident (WATER) program, which was designed specifically to support projects that would provide affordable water

supply at the community level, DBP president and chief executive officer Michael O. de Jesus said in a news release Saturday.

“DBP’s broad experience in bankrolling water supply projects would be a boon to our collective efforts to find suitable and sustainable solutions to address the rising demand for an important natural resource, such as water,” de Jesus said.

The DBP is the eighth largest bank in the country in terms of assets and provides credit support to four strategic sectors of the economy – infrastructure

and logistics; micro, small and medium enterprises; the environment; and social services and community development.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has raised the El Niño Alert, which it expects to emerge by June and persist until the first quarter of next year.

When we talk about reaching the underserved and unreached, we mean people who are disadvantaged or have a difficult time getting an education. Children who live in inaccessible rural areas, people with disabilities, girls who experience gender-based discrimination, refugees and displaced people, and those who are poor might all fall under this category. We can enable people to break the cycle of poverty, expand their perspectives, and meaningfully contribute to their communities by addressing these hurdles and providing educational opportunities to these populations. It is impossible to exaggerate the value of education for everyone. Individuals who pursue education get the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities necessary to make intelligent decisions, take part in worthwhile endeavors, and actively contribute to society. It acts as a catalyst for societal and individual progress, promoting economic expansion, social solidarity, and sustainable growth.

On the other hand, a comprehensive strategy is needed to reach the

unreached. It requires locating and removing the barriers preventing marginalized populations from gaining access to education. Physical accessibility must be ensured by infrastructure development, such as building schools and enhancing transit systems. A welcoming and secure learning environment must also address socio-cultural obstacles like prejudice, discriminatory practices, and gender biases. The caliber of instruction offered is an additional important factor. It is crucial to guarantee that schools in poor communities have qualified teachers, sufficient resources, and a curriculum that is current and sensitive to community needs. A holistic approach to education should foster not only cognitive capabilities but also social-emotional competencies, creativity, and critical thinking. Moreover, the realization of universal education is dependent on cooperation and partnerships. For comprehensive plans, resource mobilization, and intervention implementation, collaboration between governments, non-governmental organizations,

51 local companies to join Bacolod’s Kalayaan Job Fair

BACOLOD CITY – Some 51 local companies will participate in the Kalayaan Job Fair organized by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on June 12 at SM City Bacolod here.

DOLE-Western Visayas Regional Director Sixto Rodriguez Jr. on Friday invited job seekers to apply.

“We expect that there will be more qualified applicants to be hired. We usually encourage employers to hire them on the spot,” he said

in a press briefing here.

According to the data of DOLE-6, at least 7,514 job vacancies will be offered during the employment fair, which coincides with the commemoration of the 125th year of Philippine Independence.

Jobs available include those in administrative and support services, government agencies, electricity, gas, steam and airconditioning, human health and social work, information and communication, personal service providers, wholesale and retail trade, manpower services, transport services, manufacturing and

construction.

Rodriguez said other government agencies will provide on-site services to assist applicants in their preemployment requirements.

World Bank arms 70 E. Visayas towns to fight stunting

TACLOBAN CITY – At least 70 towns in Leyte and Samar provinces have been included in the World Bank (WB)-funded Philippine Multisectoral Nutrition Project (PMNP) that seeks to reduce the incidence of stunting.

Zambo City revenues at P497-M since January

ZAMBOANGA CITY

– The city government has collected PHP497.95 million in revenues, fees and other charges since January this year.

Benjie Barredo, city licensing officer, said Saturday that PHP441 million of the PHP497.95 million collection were business taxes, based on data from the City Treasurer’s Office.

Barredo said the remaining PHP56.95 million were generated from the collection of regulatory fees, garbage fees and other charges by the City Health Office, City Engineer’s Office, and City Planning and Development Office.

The revenue collection since January this year was higher by 70.09 percent

than the P359 million in the same period last year.

Meanwhile, as of May 31, the Business One-Stop Shop (BOSS) has registered a total of 14,215

business establishments.

“We registered 1,433 new businesses and 12,782 renewals of business permits,” he said.

3 CDO villages pilot areas for anti-child labor program

– Three barangays in this city have been chosen as pilot areas for anti-child labor programs to be implemented in partnership with a non-government organization.

During its launching on Friday, World Vision Field Coordinator Jovie Sorongon identified the barangays as Puntod, Cugman, and Gusa.

“These barangays will receive starter kits on June 12 during the Kalayaan Job Fair,” Sorongon said.

The job fair forms part of the 125th Independence Day celebration on June 12 organized by the Department of Labor and Employment in Northern Mindanao Region (DOLE-10), the partner agency of World Vision, which also observes the World Day Against Child Labor.

DOLE-10 Director Estrella Uy-Pahalla said together with World Vision, they will turn over PHP3,000 worth of certificates of awards for the livelihood starter kits to 100 parents or guardians of child laborers from the pilot villages.

Cugman Barangay Chair Wendilyn Escobia said the village council profiled 79 child laborers in 2022 which was mitigated through their intervention.

“There were 23 new cases profiled this year (2023) and would be recipients of DOLE-10 and World Vision’s distribution of livelihood starter kits on Independence Day,” Escobia said.

Meanwhile, Puntod Barangay Councilor Joy Amarga reported that there are 135 child laborers identified since last year in their village alone. (PNA)

He added that the recipients were regularly monitored by DOLE field offices to ensure that their livelihood projects are sustained and generated income for their families.

In celebration of the World Day Against Child Labor on June 12, he said that DOLE will lead advocacy and orientation lectures and gift-giving activities simultaneously in all provinces in the region with some 600 profiled children.

Other activities include the distribution of food packs, medicines, clothes, and coin banks as well as mascot shows, puppet

shows, film viewing, art exhibit, and storytelling sessions will also give entertainment to children these events, he added.

Meanwhile, in Negros Oriental, the province will also mark the Independence Day celebration with an emphasis on child laborers and interventions to be carried out to address the problem.

DOLE-Negros Oriental provincial director Ma. Teresa Tanquiamco told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Friday that on top of the usual local and overseas jobs fair, this year’s celebration will also include World Day Against Child Labor.

“We have identified 25 parents of child laborers to participate in this year’s activity, which includes skills assessment to determine the best livelihood package for each one of them,” she said in part Cebuano.

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) will help in the assessment and also provide them with the necessary training so they may qualify for government assistance, she added.

Since last year, DOLE has already profiled more or less 7,000 child laborers across the province.

Child laborers were found in the construction industry, sugarcane plantations and farm work and domestic employment, manufacturing and retail, among others. The DOLE official said there is a need to empower and provide interventions to the child laborers’ parents to protect these children from exploitation, abuse, underpayment, and dangerous work environments. These goals aimed to address key issues such as poverty, education, healthcare, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. In the Philippines, significant efforts have been made to achieve these goals.

First is to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. One of the primary goals of the MDGs was to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. In the Philippines, poverty remains a significant challenge. However, the country has made notable progress in reducing poverty rates over the years. Through programs like the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), which provides conditional cash transfers to impoverished families, the government has managed to uplift many out of extreme poverty. Second, to achieve universal primary education. Access to education has improved in the Philippines, with efforts focused on achieving universal primary education. The Philippines has taken measures to enhance access to reproductive healthcare services, promote family planning, and reduce maternal mortality rates. However, geographical disparities, cultural factors, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure pose challenges to ensuring comprehensive maternal health services throughout the country. Lumba-Bayabao town hall inaugurated

--- The local government of LumbaBayabao in the province of Lanao del Sur inaugurated on Thursday, June 08 its new town hall.

Lumba-Bayabao Mayor Mahar P. Dagalangit led the inauguration and ribbon cutting with the presence of Vice-Governor Mohammad Khalid “Mujam” Raki-in Adiong.

Said activity was also attended by the municipal officials and employees, village chiefs, other guests and constituents.

Mayor Dagalangit said the 20 million pesos town hall was constructed through the office of then representative of Lanao del Sur’s 1st district Ansaruddin “Hooky” Alonto Adiong.

“The municipal government is very much grateful and we are excited to better serve our constituents,”

Mayor Dagalangit said. The lady mayor emphasized the new building shall improve government functions and delivery of basic services for the people.

Aside from the inaugu-

ration of the new municipal hall, the new ABC hall amounting to P5 Million was also formally opened to the public, including the town gymnasium worth P3 Million and fences which

costs P3 Million.

“All in all, the local government of Lumba-Bayabao had a total counterpart of P15 Million for the implementation of these projects,” Mayor Dagalangit added.

In his message, Vice-Governor Adiong cited about the remarkable unity of the leaders in the locality.
