8 Northmin towns strive to achieve zero birth deaths By MARK FRANCISCO, Staff Writer

CAGAYAN de Oro City -- A total of eight municipalities in Northern Mindanao graduated last July 30 from the Municipal Local Governance Program on Health jointly undertaken by Zuellig Family Foundation and Xavier University’s Governance and Leadership Institute (GLI). The eight municipalities were identified as Damulog, Kibawe and Malitbog in Bukidnon; Linamon and Tubod in Lanao del Norte; and Jimenez, Plaridel and Tudela in Misamis Occidental. All the mayors of the said municipalities were in complete attendance during the whole afternoon event that transpired at Pearlmont Inn. For Damulog, Mayor Romeo Tiongco shared how he successfully convinced each household to contribute P20 per month to deflect the fuel expenses of the

town’s ambulance. Tiongco was likewise successful in achieving a zero birth rate in 2014. Under his helm, he expanded the Local Health Board which never failed to hold regular meetings, conducted barangay health leadership workshops, newborn initiated breastfeeding within an hour after birth, among others. CAGAYAN de Oro City -- FISHERFOLK in Lugait town, Misamis Oriental are complaining against cement giant Holcim Philippines, Inc., saying their livelihood was wrecked because of the presence of the manufacturer’s berths there. “We are forced to fish seven kilometers offshore because we are barred by Holcim from fishing near their pier and their lane which is hugging the Lugait

coastline,” Simon Castillon Jr., Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Council head, said. DAVAO City -- Davao Region outperformed all the other 16 regions in the Philippines in terms of economic growth after posting a stellar gross regional domestic product (GRDP) in 2014 at 9.4 percent, a significant increase from its 6.7-percent performance in 2013.
