hether you are into rural or urban living, I bet, you are just like the rest of us in at least one respect. When it comes to the countryside, nothing beats staying in a resort with the amenities of nature within reach, because we all expect the earth in its motherly form – an embracing, comforting sanctuary. And what do we expect from a resort? Name them and you’ll surely miss them. It’s because they are not yours for a long-time living. Until A Brown Company Inc. decided to offer the first ever residential resort at the most accessible coastal town just between two of the urbanized cities in Northern Mindanao. Overlooking the tranquil waters of Iligan Bay, Coral Resort Estates offers a sanctuary for the privileged few. Situated in Barangay Pagahan, Initao town, Misamis Oriental, Coral Resort Estates is seated about 39 km. west of Cagayan de Oro City, 29km. east of Iligan City and some 16 km. southwest of the new Laguindingan International Airport. In it, there is always something for every member of the family – a putting for dad, a meditation garden for mom and aquasports facilities for the kids. Other outdoor amenities include a gazebo, parks and playground, infinity pool, view deck, floating jetty, a diving area and a clubhouse with open lounge, function hall and a restaurant -- all for the exclusive use of residents only. What a great way to enjoy your weekend – in your own resort home. Already, a model house stood within for you to view – so typical like one of those you stayed on briefly. resort

A Musician’s wedding

I

f you’ve seen a glimpse of Richard Poon and Maricar, Regine and Ogie in their weddings then you’ll also be in awe how nice it was. Being musicians themselves of course their music was among the highlights of their weddings. No, I didn’t attend their weddings but just recently I was able to attend and sing for a fellow musician’s wedding herein our city. It was indeed a privilege to be singing for the couple along with other local musicians. Peach and pink roses filled the room , happy faces of the couple’s family and friends adds up to the

joyful atmosphere but nothing beats the confident smile of the bride as she walked down the aisle and the groom’s teary eyes as her bride said her vows. I’ve been to so many weddings but this is a first for a fellow musician. As a whole it was just simply elegant. Genuine love from the families gathered as they enthusiastically participated in the program. As the groom is a musician himself, music was one of the highlights of his wedding. As a musician I also had the privilege to listen to fellow musicians of which I found very

relaxing and entertaining as well. So this is the feeling of being serenaded... When it was our turn to hit the stage we also enjoyed performing the set of songs in our specialty of Jazz Acoustic. It was indeed a great night of music for all of us performers. Sitting in our seats, we still couldn’t believe that this musician friend of ours is already married because when he’s with us playing we always find ourselves laughing afterwards but now we’re very happy for him and his wife. That was a musician’s wedding... I wonder now how mine would look like in God’s time? How about yours?

HEALTH IN FOCUS by DR. MARY JEAN LORECHE

Special Olympics Philippines: Changing Lives

A

s of this writing, the Special Olympics for special children (those with intellectual disabilities) and to be hosted by the CDO Chapter, is yet to be held a day after writing the article. The venue will be at the Pelaez Sports Center. I was kind of impressed and truly amazed by the dedication and commitment of the parents (Samuel Tabligan- coach), the SPED teachers (Bambi Balandra, Becky Pabia) and the organizers (Dr Vic Cinco, Ms Lee Ginete). But, more than these group of people, are the children themselves who are participating in the various events: they are truly gifted and amazing! Thus, it is but right that I dedicate an article for these young bloods whose very lives should serve to inspire us and make us aware of their plight. Intellectual disability or ID

for short is just one of the many disabilities that a special child may have. ID is a term used when a person has certain limitations in mental functioning and skills, such as communicating, taking care of himself/herself and social skills, which makes him/her to develop more slowly when compared to the same age group of population. Simply put, it means that a child has ID when his/ her ability to learn at the expected level and function is limited. Where a 4 or 5 year old child ordinarily can talk in sentences, and can understand a story or can follow instructions, a child with ID may have difficulties catching up. Thus, if placed in a regular class, the child may be getting very low grades or even fail in most of the subjects. Where before, these children are

labelled as “mental retardates”, this is now more aptly called as ID, and which actually is better. Most cases of ID have no known cause. It is not unusual to find that one child has ID while the rest of the siblings are not. Although, genetics, birth defects, trauma, infections are known causes, the more commonly associated illnesses are Down’s and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The appearance of the signs for ID is directly proportional to the degree of the disability. If the child is suffering from a slight problem, then, the signs may be more subtle, as compared t one whose disability is severe. The importance of seeing the baby Doctor (Pediatrician ) on a regular basis cannot be over emphasized. The developmental milestones are the standard by which any deviation from it can help in the assessment of

children with special needs. Should a child become special, after evaluation and diagnostics has been performed; the care of the child takes paramount importance. Parents and the immediate caregivers need to understand and learn the basics of what ID is all about in order to better care for these special children. Denial, non-acceptance and the fear of social stigmas should be a thing of the past. For in helping the child as early as possible get the best that can be offered , loving them, accepting unconditionally, treating them with respect are but basics to the dignity of each special child. By being attuned to the development of one’s child, acceptance is the key to finding help early on, thereby helping the child in attaining his/her full potential...

The Extra Mile

ustomer service is the lifeblood of every organization. It doesn't matter what the company's size is – big or small, NYSE-listed or SME, department store or sari-sari store – good customer service differentiates it from the competition, making it a cut above the rest. All companies and organizations know this, and deep down inside as individuals, this is already engrained in our system. It doesn't take a lot of seminars or workshops to know what it takes to have good customer service. It all actually boils down to something we have been taught since we're little: good manners and right conduct or GMRC. Coming from the customer service field myself, I find it very saddening when I am faced with a very poor display of customer service. Unfortunately, there are many businesses here in our city that

seem to disregard its value. These past few weeks, I have been subjected to several kinds of disheartening quality of service, in both big businesses and small ones. I'm not planning to share the little details, but one of those occurrences took place a couple of weeks ago while I was paying my bills in an “express payment facility”. After waiting for almost 45 minutes, the uncaring and visibly pissed off cashier closed for lunch break before I could do my transaction, leaving me hanging around like an idiot. The next one happened just a few days ago. I decided to hit two birds with one stone by buying a few items in a nearby sari-sari store while I walk my dog in the neighborhood. When I called out the usual bisaya term “ayo” a few times, the lady was practically shouting on top of her lungs and yelling angrily in bisaya why I can't seem to wait. I had to stay there

for some more minutes just to buy the things I came for. Now you must be wondering what kind of bad luck I have when it comes to customer service. Or you might also be toying with the idea that I might have done something to irk them. To this I could say with all honesty that I have been nothing but cordial and polite. So what drives people to treat their customers this way? I usually tend to forgo these kinds of lapses and justify it in my mind along these lines: the customer service person was having a really terrible day or probably going through the worst kind of breakup imaginable. She could've been suffering from a horrible migraine and everything she hears is like gongs and cymbals and loud screaming in her head. Or maybe there's a big problem in the family? Her dog died? She's PMS-ing? Her son got arrested for

drug possession? Her cousin's classmate's sister's friend died and she feels terrible because the last words she said to that person was a loud resounding curse? My imagination often fills in the blank and I feel a lot better after. But sometimes, maybe, just maybe, that person simply lacks proper decorum and good manners, and has no place in a business that should be kinder to its customers. When your work or business calls for interaction with your customers, you simply don't treat them unkindly. Everyone deserves to be treated with the kind of respect that you also expect for yourself. It doesn't matter if you are having a really bad case of diarrhea or your son is being bullied at school or whatever problems are troubling your mind. None of that matters when you face your customer. It's not about you anymore, it's about them and what they need.

That's why you're in business in the first place, or why you are working in that job. If you think you are not cut out for that, then you might want to consider your other options. The truth is, to be really ahead of the competition, it is not merely about satisfying what the customer wants, it's about delighting your customers with that extra mile of effort. But how can you hope to achieve that when you can't even cover the very basics of customer service first? The golden rule tells us that we must not do to others what we don't want to be done to us. After all is said and done, to me this is still the very basic foundation of customer service. I hope more businesses in Cagayan de Oro jump into the bandwagon and put more focus on this aspect of business. We are, after all, the City of Golden Friendship. Hopefully, this extends to local customer service too.

Cannes-winning film “ILO ILO” reunites Singaporean director with Filipina nanny

I

n the early 1990s, Ilongga Teresita Sajonia moved to Singapore to work as a nanny, taking care of three little boys. Once, on a vacation with the family, she visited a wishing well and wished that her wards would grow up to be decent men and that they would not forget about her. Decades later, her wish came true and it was no less than a Cannes International Film Festival awardwinning film that paved the way for the reunion between her and the boys she loved and cared for like they were her own. Teresita was the inspiration behind ILO ILO, a film that received international acclaim and won the prestigious Camera d’Or for first time feature films at the 2013 Cannes. Set in Singapore, ILO ILO chronicles the relationship between a family of three and their newly arrived Filipino maid, Teresa, who has gone abroad like many other Filipino women in search of a better life. The family needs to adapt to the presence of this stranger, which further threatens their already strained relationship. Still, Teresa and Jia Le, the young and troublesome she cares for, soon form a bond. Their unique connection continues to develop and soon she becomes a part of the family. But it is 1997 and the Asian financial crisis is starting to be felt in the region. The film which won the Camera d’Or award in Cannes and is now Singapore's entry to the Oscar Awards for best foreign language film. It is the feature film debut of Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen, one of the three boys “Auntie Terry” took care of as a domestic helper in the Lion City. After the success of the movie, Cebu-based PR agency Selrahco PR contacted Chen and his siblings, and offered to help them reunite with their former nanny, whom they fondly called “Auntie Terry.” This proved to be a challenge as they knew only her first name and hometown, Selrahco PR’s Iloilowide search ended in an emotional reunion, when Chen and his youngest brother Christopher flew to Iloilo to see her again after 16 years. Mr. Charles Lim, Selhraco PR consultant, acknowledged the support of the Iloilo media in his search for “Auntie Terry” when he had only three photos of Sajonia taken in Singapore in the early 90s and without a name and address to begin with. He also thanked Caroline Bondoc and her family in Iloilo, Cebu Pacific, close associates, Director Helen Catalbas of Department of Tourism 6, John Rolida, Toots Jimenez, Jr, and Shara Dableo for their unwavering support for the successful completion of the search. “I was very happy to see them and just hugged them tight,” recounted Teresita in Filipino. “They

were still young when I left, and now they have become so big and handsome.” Teresita worked for the Chen family for eight years, but had to return home in 1997 due to health issues. Since then, she had lost touch with the family but still carried photos of the three boys with her. “They were very nice kids; they could be mischievous at times, but they’re really very sweet,” she said. In late August, ILO ILO was screened in Singapore cinemas and “Auntie Terry” was there to attend its premiere screening. Her dream to revisit Singapore and the Chen family was made possible when Cebu Pacific flew her back to the city state in August 2013 on a direct flight from Iloilo City to attend the Singapore premiere where CEB was also the official airline. It was her first time to travel to a foreign country after 16 years and to watch a movie in a cinema. “We are honored to be part of this wonderful reunion and support Auntie Terry when she goes to Singapore through Cebu Pacific’s direct flights from Iloilo. For us, Auntie Terry represents the hard work and selfless love of global Filipinos,” said Cebu Pacific Vice President for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog. “She and many other global Filipinos leave a lasting impact wherever they are in the world.” Teresita said she could not believe that Chen would make a movie inspired by their story and that he and his brothers would come looking for her. “I’m so touched and thankful,” she said. “It must mean that they loved me as much as I loved them.” “ILO ILO is a story about love, family and relationships, and we could never have imagined that a little film like this could reach out, connect, and re-connect those ties that we thought were long lost,” the filmmaker posted on the movie’s official Facebook page after the reunion. Chen is the first Singaporean to win a top award at Cannes for a feature film. Kagay-anons have a chance to catch the multi-awarded film courtesy of a special screening on Friday, 15 November at SM City Cinema 2. There will be a 10AM matinee followed by a 7PM gala in the evening. Auntie Terry, actress Angeli Agbayani (who plays her role in the movie) and Mr. Charles Lim, the Selrahco PR who reunited Terry with her wards after 16 years, will be present to grace the affair. ILO ILO will have its special screening in Iloilo City on December 1st. It officially opens in cinemas throughout the Philippines on December 4.
