Ebcas calls for transparency in profiling Muslim students By RUFFY MAGBANUA
MANILA — Ako Padayon Pilipino Party-List Congressman Adriano “Momot” Ebcas has called for transparency in the profiling of Muslim students studying in Manila in relation to their alleged propensity for “violent extremism”. During the first organizational meeting of the House Committee on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity, Ebcas has raised issues of the rights of Muslim students to equal protection and against discriminatory acts. Ebcas, a Mindanaoan congressman vehemently assailed the propriety of the verification process imposed on Muslim students. In the briefing conducted by the Philippine National Police (PNP), it recapped that the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) has conducted information on Muslims studying in Metro Manila schools
and universities, as part of its fight against “violent extremism”. The January 31 Memorandum directed all police stations in Metro Manila to submit an updated list of Muslim students in their respective areas. The Salaam Police Centers were tasked to “undertake close monitoring, networking, and liaising activities with Muslim communities in addressing terrorism and lawless violence, and to ensure respect of cultural diversity and cooperation.” However, on February 21, Brig. General Debold Sinas, the director of NCRPO withdrew the memorandum issued on January 31. Ebcas questioned Presidential Peace Adviser Carlito Galvez who vaguely explained that the memorandum on the profiling of Muslim students was based on “human existence” and “technical technique”.
