Wife of ex-mayor reported missing By DIVINA M. SUSON Corrrespondent

ILIGAN City--The family of Iligan City former Mayor Franklin Quijano has finally reported on Tuesday, July 2, to the police that his wife, Salma Theresa Gerona-Quijano, has been missing since June 27. Franklin is presently the administrator of the Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corporation (PHIVIDEC), a government-owned and controlled corporation located in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. The family has circulated the picture of Salma and contact numbers with a plea to help them find her. She was last seen at their house in Purok 3-A, Dao, Barangay Hinaplanon, at 10:30 in the morning on June 27.

CAGAYAN de Oro City--A total of 138 communist supporters and members of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrender to the military on various occasions in different areas in Northern Mindanao, a military report said. Maj. Regie H. Go, the spokesperson of the army’s 4ID in Cagayan De Oro City, that a certain Junex, 18, an NPA regular and 19 other “Militia ng Bayan” in Surigao del Sur

surrendered three days ago. He said that prior to the surrender of Junex and his group, 24 NPA members, 10 of them regulars yielded to the army’s 58IB in Claveria, Misamis Oriental. Junex surrendered an M16 rifle armed with an M203 grenade launcher while his supporter also turned over a total of 20 homemade shotguns. THE Philippines is slowly aging, according to a study of state think tank Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS). Citing a United Nations data, the research paper titled “Are We Missing Out on the Demographic Dividend? Trends and Prospects” projected that the country will transition to an ‘aging society’. This will become evident when the elderly, aged 65 or older, will already comprise at least seven percent of the total population by 2032. We will further

transition to an ‘aged society’ when the share of the elderly population is already at least 14 percent by 2069. The findings of the study were presented by one of its authors, PIDS Research Fellow Michael Abrigo, in a public seminar organized by the Institute recently. The rising number of old people, according to Abrigo, may pose a heavy burden on the country’s resources. He was, however, quick to add that the same economic and demographic See SOCIETY, page 11
