the potential to be mainstream. The fruit is used as a souring ingredient and touted as an immune booster. Calamansi juice is also considered an exciting discovery as a flavoring to food and beverages. Calamansi is an emerging export product, with the Philippine exports only at US$60,000 in January to November 2020. Exports were recorded for 10 countries, with no exports to EFTA yet. Carrageenan Carrageenan has strong demand in European markets because of its wide range of applications. It’s used as a gelling agent in dairy products and thickeners to beverages, sauces, and syrups. The Philippines is the largest producer of carrageenan, accounting for around 77% of the global supply. Global export of carrageenan amounted to US$147 million in January to November 2020, with EFTA exports making up 0.85%. Moringa The study points out that moringa has high financial potential if the quality is appropriate for export. The plant’s leaves (dried or powder) and oil are allowed for food applications in Europe. For food supplements, organic certification is often required. Prospective markets for moringa are Germany, the UK, France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain. Company website now a must The COVID-19 pandemic made paper brochures obsolete and company websites crucial. The study recommended having a company website with detailed product information, including documentation, specifications, and hi-res product photos. In a previous press release by the Embassy, Swiss Ambassador Alain Gaschen said that he is “convinced that the Philippines can find the means, talent, and energy to position the country in the international stage as a supplier of innovative, attractive, and sustainable items especially in the markets of certified and ecological products.” For export assistance, email the DTI-Export Marketing Bureau at exports@ dti.gov.ph. The bureau is the primary export promotion arm of the DTI. DTI-EMB offers product consultation, market intelligence, business matching sessions, among others. Just recently, warrants of arrest have also been issued against Emily for the crimes of Perjury and Falsification of Vallacar Transit Inc.’s (“VTI”) General Information Sheets (“GIS”). said in a statement. Andanar emphasized the importance of having moral governance to address graft and corruption. “As we celebrate its Foundation Day, may we continue to successfully pursue the moral governance it seeks to realize, governance that is for the Filipino people and by the Filipino people, regardless of religious beliefs. And may our integrity and accountability further translate into ending graft and corruption so that we can faithfully and fully serve the Filipino people and equitably benefit everyone,” he added. He also expressed hope that the administrative transition in the region would improve the peace and security in BARMM to promote its economic activities and harness its full socio-economic potential. This way, Andanar said it would help contribute to the overall development and inclusive growth of the country, “especially as we recover as one nation from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.”

World-class Kibawe sports complex breaks ground By MARK FRANCISCO

THE municipal government of Kibawe in Bukidnon led in the groundbreaking of the soon to rise world-class facility, the Kibawe sports complex. A project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) through the efforts of Rep. Manuel Zubiri and earmarked by legislation led bt Vice Mayor Raymundo Batao, the Kibawe sports complex will feature a rubberized racing field, among other amenities, which will replace the dilapidated oval of Kibawe Central Elementary School in barangay East Kibawe. This will be the first of 22 sports complexes all over Bukidnon which are planned to be constructed under the administration of Gov. Jose Ma. Zubiri. And for that, Batao is grateful. “Dako akong pasalamat sa atong halangdong gobernador ug sa atong The BARMM was created through the President Rodrigo Duterte’s signing of Republic Act 11054, also known as Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) in 2018. Schools protocol during pandemic By MARIFE M. COMONOG Kiwalan Elementary School

AMONG them are physical distancing, mask wearing, disinfecting classrooms and COVID-19 testing. The wisdom of reopening schools in the middle of a pandemic has been hotly debated. Educators generally agree that inperson teaching is far better for students than distance learning. Children absolutely need to return to in-school learning for their healthy development and well being and so safety in schools and in the barangay where the school campus is located must be a priority. We need local school boards to prioritize funding the needed safety accommodations such as improving ventilation sys-

tems in public schools and providing PPEs for teachers and non-faculty staff. As we near SY 2021-22, DepEd must have ample plans such as holding class outdoors, reducing class size or conducting class in shifts, have a plan for what happens when a student or teacher gets ill and maybe even have started the vaccination process for teachers. We must ensure that inperson instruction is not only safe for our students and teachers working in public schools but that is equitable. Improving building ventilation can help us control the spread of COVID-19 throughout the proposed face-to-face school year.

Batao said. The groundbreaking last January 13 was preceded with an invocation led by the datus and the baes. This will indeed be another boost to Kibawe as it is considered the cleanest municipality in Bukidnon.

Bangsamoro Transition Authority urged Congress to extend the Bangsamoro transition period from 2022 to 2025. BARMM Chief Minister Murad Ebrahim said an extension of the transition

period would allow them sufficient time to accomplish its tasks and commitments under the BOL and for the national government to deliver the pending programs under the normalization process. (PNA)

What matters most? Glimpse of education amidst pandemic By CAROL O. LORONO, PhD

Teaching is the concerted sharing of knowledge and experience and it helps to ensure essential learning. The closure of schools in Cagayan de Oro last March in the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis denies children of opportunities for development and improvement. The bearings of this decision in our department are likely to be major, particularly for children who happen to have issues in the vulnerability of the pandemic, most especially disadvantaged children. These children generally have access to fewer educational opportunities outside the school setting and majority of them lies in the metropolis where important hub for regional or international connections, commerce, and communications. The current situation in Cagayan de Oro makes it necessary to implement an action plan to sustain learning and reduce the inequali-

ties and undesirable effects of the pandemic that could result from this prolonged or extended interruption in schooling. Children with learning difficulties may also be affected when there is a prolonged interruption or extension in opening of school. Not being present in school to receive instruction will hinder children’s ability to learn and progress academically (Applied Survey Research, 2011; Chang & Romero, 2008; Romero & Lee, 2007). The burden of catching up after a period of prolonged inactivity may result to precipitate dropping out of school for some. Lewis (2020) emphasized the importance of protecting educational gains and the continuity of learning for all. The impacts of school closures are likely to be unequal, and disparities should be addressed and that what matters.
