DSWD now uses e-transfer mode for SAP distribution TACLOBAN, CITY, Leyte, Aug. 23 (PIA) -- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has shifted to electronic payment mode where payouts for the Social Amelioration cash subsidy are made through electronic cash transfers. DSWD Undersecretary Rene Glen Paje said this during the Laging Handa Network Briefing on Friday hosted by PCOO Secretary Martin Andanar. Usec Paje said a large percent of SAP distribution is now done through electronic platforms and through the financial service providers of the agency to lessen personal contact of DSWD personnel during payouts. DSWD has tapped the services of some financial service providers to fasttrack the distribution of the financial assistance for the qualified beneficiaries.

However, he admitted that they cannot totally do away with manual payouts particularly in geographically isolated areas without internet access or wi-fi connectivity. But he assured that personal protective equipment (PPEs) are being issued to frontliners for their protection and safety during payouts. In E astern Visayas, DSWD-8 has reported a total of 81,772 waitlisted beneficiaries from 129 local government units who are heavily affected by the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As of August 19, there are already 10,216 families served through direct cash payout and 22,541 families served through Starpay or a total 32,757 families served with P163,785,000 total amount distributed in the region. Go, Robredo, Andanar condemn bombing incident in Sulu A total of 13 people died during the twin blasts that rock Jolo, Sulu earlier today. Initial reports say that the first bomb which was mounted on a motorcycle, went off around noon while members of the Philippine Army’s 21st Infantry Battalion was on a supply run at the Food Paradise Shop in front of Plaza, Rizal in Barangay Walled City in Jolo, Sulu. The second explosion took place just 100 meters away from the initial blast. Sen. Bong Go took no time in condemning the latest bombing in Jolo. The senator from the South was attending the appointment hearing of the newly installed Westmincom Command Chief, Lieutenant General Corleto Vinluan Jr. when the bombing occurred. “Walang awang pinatay ng mga pagsabog ang mga sundalong naglilingkod sa ating bayan at idinamay pa ang mga sibilyan na walang kamuwang-muwang. Wala talagang pinipiling lugar o panahon ang mga teroristang ito. Naghihirap na nga tayo dahil sa krisis na dulot ng pandemya, patuloy

pa rin ang mga terorista sa kanilang hangaring guluhin at sirain ang buhay ng mga Pilipino,” Go said in his video message. Go laments that while Pres. Rodrigo Duterte works hard for the country’s future, some groups are bent in using terrorism to achieve their goals. “Nakakalungkot na habang ginagawa natin ang lahat upang maisaayos ang ating lipunan at mabigyan ng mas magandang kinabukasan ang ating mga anak,

How ready are Philippine schools for distance learning? By ANNABELLE J. LARIBA Principal III Gusa Elementary School

AS we approach school opening 2020, what is on everybody’s mind is how distance learning will be carried out in fact. Distance learning is completely new to all but a handful of private schools already attuned to online learning using the Internet. Most schools and students however have connectivity and bandwidth limitations. Distance learning using school packets delivered and collected weekly will have to be the immediate solution because face to face contact carries with it the risk of spreading the coronavirus. The learning curve for distance learning will be steep. So in this new normal,

the drivers of distance education must not be DepEd, rather it must be the school divisions and the schools themselves. Five modalities for meeting students have been identified: face to face, online classes, online-offline modular, offline modular using digitized learning resources and modular using printed learning resources. The world is rapidly changing and along with it comes new innovations and technologies. Education has to evolve to keep pace. The teacher’s role is not to be the sole provider of learning. He or she has to be a guide, motivator and facilitator of learning.

Challenging students: real-world mathematics By MERCEDES C. BERNAD, Teacher III Maningcol Central School Division of Ozamiz City

TWIN BLASTS. Soldiers evacuate one of the casualties in the first bomb explosion in front of an eatery in Barangay Walled City in Jolo, Sulu at about 11:53 a.m. on Monday (Aug. 24, 2020). a bomb-laden motorcycle beside an M35 truck of the Army’s 11th Infantry Division. The explosion site was the usual place where troops park their vehicle whenever they go on marketing duties. Joint Task Force Sulu spokesperson, Capt. Rex Payot, said the soldiers were conducting a security operation to support local government officials who were on a coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) response effort

when the first explosion occurred. The second explosion happened just 100 meters away from the site of the first explosion at about 1:06 p.m., just as authorities were conducting a post-blast assessment. In a statement following the blasts, the Joint Task Force Sulu assured the public that “we will continue to sustain the security efforts for peace and stability in the province.”

Tragic reminders In a separate statement, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said the twin bombings should serve as “tragic reminders” that despite the prevailing health crisis, the government must remain vigilant in face of continuing threats to national security. “The government has always maintained a zero tolerance policy for terrorism and terrorism-related See EXPLOSIONS, page 9

A student may walk into algebra class day in and day out wondering, “When are we going to use this stuff?” It’s a question asked in classes of all types across the country but is perhaps most pertinent when it comes to math. Luckily, real-world math problems provide a powerful answer to that frequently asked question. Real-world math problems can be found in every grade level and content area of mathematics from kindergarten through calculus. Ask your students, are you planning a birthday party? You may need addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to figure out the costs associated with

that party. When dining at a restaurant, how much of a tip do we leave? We need to use percentages to find out. Chefs work with equal parts creativity and measured logic. There is plenty of math in baking and cooking such as measuring ingredients. For older students, you can have them map weather patterns using the cosine function or use ratios and proportions to design a room or home. Math problems are everywhere in our curriculum and they come up often in everyday life. We just need to bring them to the attention of our students so we can answer the famous question, “When are we ever going to use this stuff?”
