Addressing challenges in special education under the ‘new normal’
Managing optimum patience and calmness in dealing with children with special needs

Because of the COVID-19 situation in the country, DepEd has developed a Basic Education-Learning Continuity Plan (LCP) to be implemented this upcoming school year 2020-2021. In the BE-LCP, DepEd assured that Special Education (SPED) is included in the various learning delivery modalities being prepared to ensure learning continuity of learners with exceptionalities. However, as special education teachers, how are we going to address these challenges under the “new normal”? Face-to-face interaction is very vital in teaching special education. Now, we are beset on partnering with the parents in order to still attain full and optimum learning among children with special needs. This posts a great challenge, especially when we deal with the working parents, yet, we must exert maximum effort and patience for learning to continue. As a parent, you have many opportunities throughout any day to influence and teach your children. Sometimes that can happen deliberately, like when you show them how to tie their shoes; or it can happen unintentionally, as your children observe you doing things.
What you do and how you behave as an adult tends to be the biggest influence on how your children act. They are watching and learning from you every day. You can use this fact to help instruct your children. In addition to sharing information, talking helps to build relationships. It is through connections that people learn to trust each other and grow. The more your children feel secure in their relationship with you, the more readily they will learn from you. As you spend time together, share with them your experiences, feelings, and values related to the skills being taught. Invite your children to share with you their feelings and thoughts, and help them to identify their pride and sense of accomplishment when they learn something new or finish a task. These internal feelings then become the self-motivating factors that drive your children to continue to learn. Yes, it is very challenging but with the combined super powers of the teachers and the parents in this new normal, the teaching and learning of children with special needs will be attainable and achievable.
Teachers of all levels should know their classrooms will represent a variety of cultural backgrounds, learning styles and intellectual abilities, most significantly when you are teaching children with special needs. Teachers should be patient and calm and help maintain a balance between their own expectations and the learners’ unique abilities. For me, it is very challenging but what drives me most, is my love, my passion, my commitment in handling children with special needs. They are so special to me and they bring so much fufillment towards me that they are making the works lighter and more manageable. I just love dealing and teaching them, I call it my calling. When a child has special needs, patience is a must. Since this type of learner takes longer to perform simple tasks, understanding is key for development. No matter how long it takes, a special education teacher must give a child time to complete the task. Having a good sense of humor will help along the way. Although the classroom is a place for serious learning, dealing with a special needs child will require the ability to create a cheerful environment
that empowers this type of learner to gain success. Also, it is up to this teacher to take time and comprehend each student’s individual needs so that frustrating situations can be avoided. Also, it is essential to provide a calm temperament when dealing with these type of learners. Many children must balance behavioral and learning issues, so a classroom environment can be extremely stressful. An effective teacher will be able to calm his or her students so that anxiety is reduced. When children feel safe, they are more likely to be open to learning. More so, values of patience and calmness must always go with each other especially when dealing with children with special needs. And while these children learn so much from me, actually, in my own realizations and actualizations, I am learning a lot from them consequently. They just don’t realize it, but to be honest, they are the ones who taught me how to be more patient, how to be more understanding, and most of all how to be more calm amidst life’s challenges. And with that, I will be forever truly grateful to my pupils.
Learning Delivery Modalities in the New Normal By GRACE S. LAVIDEZ Master Teacher I Bongbongon Elementary School
COVID 19 pandemic brings a lot of changes in many aspects of our lives. One of these is the new delivery of learning. To ensure the continuous implementation of the K-12 Curriculum and basic education program, Department of Education tries to change the landscape of learning delivery. The implementation of this learning modality comes along with curriculum modification and adjustment, alignment of learning materials, and teacher training. The Department of Education mandates every school leaders with the help of stakeholders to prepare a learning continuity plan which will serve as guide for the teachers, parents and learners for the new normal.
There are four different learning modalities introduced by DepEd in this time of pandemic. These are Face to face, Distance Learning, Blended learning and Home Schooling Program. Face to face learning modality is the common way of delivering the lesson via face to face in a classroom. However this is subject to physical distancing and minimum health standards due to the pandemic. Distance learning is a modality where pupils learn even at distance from a teacher. It can be categorized into three types; modular distance learning, online teaching, ETV and radiobased instruction. Blended learning is a combination of distance learning and face to face. Home Schooling is a program under alternative
delivery mode where the pupil learns from qualified parents, guardians or tutors. In choosing the appropriate modality, basic things must be put into considerations. Like the access, conditions/ situations, readiness and availability of resources. We must also consider the context and situation of the learners in our respective area. The new modalities of learning brings doubt and worries to the teachers, parents and pupils. However, we must keep in mind that education must continue. With the recent situation that we have, it is indeed necessary to collaborate with one another to ensure that the continuity of quality education to every child is being achieved.
admitted at identified hospitals for management. As of Saturday, Caraga Region has a total of 455 Covid-19 cases with 333 recoveries, 118 active cases and four recorded deaths. Butuan City has a total of 161 cases with 110 recoveries, 48 active cases and three recorded deaths. “Our cases are continuously rising just as we are continuously moving. We call on everyone to increase vigilance and be accountable to our own health,” DOH13 director Jose R. Llacuna said in a statement Sunday (August 23). He also urged the public to “stay away from the three big Cs: Closed spaces that have poor ventilation, crowded areas, and closedcontact settings especially where people have closerange conversations.” Llacuna added that the risk of clustering of cases or cases that will most likely increase is when these 3Cs overlap. “When these settings are not avoided and we do not protect ourselves, then there is a high risk of getting the infection,” he said. Meanwhile, the Province of Dinagat Islands (PDI) is no longer free from Covid-19 as the DOH-13 announced on Saturday afternoon its first seven cases. In a statement, the Provincial Inter-Agency Task Force of PDI said that in the past months, despite the limitations of the health care system and quarantine capacity, more than 2,000 LSIs were welcomed in the
