LGU prohibits fishing in MisOr as oil spill cleanup continues By CRIS DIAZ Executive Editor
JASAAN, Misamis Oriental: Local government units of Lower Jassan, a coastal village east of Misamis Oriental, ordered a stop on all fishing activities in the area as massive clean up of spilled oil from a sunken vessel there continues. Village Chief Sabas V. Tagarda, Jr., of Lower Jasaan, said Wednesday that about 100 fishermen in the town’s five coastal villages were affected by the oil spill when
a cargo vessel, MV Rakal, sunk due to gaping holes on the vessel’s main hull. He said that the LGU of Lower Jasaan has distributed rice assistance to fishermen living along the coastlines while some fishermen were hired to assist in the massive cleanup. Tagarda said that the coastguard authorities led the cleanup drive, which resulted in the initial recovery of 21 barrels of spilled oil covering 70 percent of the eight hectare coastline,
mostly planted with mangroves. He said that the owner of the vessel, a certain Dr. Lord Salvana, of Bukidnon, was willing to compensate the LGUs of the losses incurred due to the oil spill. Regional Executive Director Reynaldo Degamo, of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Northern Mimdanao, said that the the first offender of oil spill is fined in the amount of only P10,000.

CDO’s new infectious disease center seen as Mindanao’s ‘RITM’ By NEF LUCZON
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY-Mayor Oscar Moreno said Tuesday he hopes the new infectious disease center here would cater not only to Region 10 but would also be Mindanao’s own Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM). Moreno was referring to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center-Cagayan de Oro City-Center for Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases (NMMC-CDO-CEREID), which will be turned over
to the state-run NMMC on April 8. While the facility was created to address the Covid-19 pandemic, Moreno said its long-term function would be as an infectious diseases hub for Mindanao, similar to Manila’s RITM. “It’s a very ambitious dream, but hopefully, when this will be turned over (to NMMC), it will be a good launching pad for this dream (to happen),” Moreno said. DAVAO CITY-- The National Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) has classified this city as a ‘low risk’ area’ for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), the Davao City Information Office (CIO) said Tuesday. CIO said the classification released by the IATF on April 3 was based on two indicators: the low 2-Week Growth Rate (2WGR) and the Average Daily Attack Rate (ADAR). “Last week, Davao City was classified as a minimum risk; it is now at low risk. This is because we have a negative 8.74 twoweek growth rate (2WGR) which is still low, but our average daily attack rate (ADAR) reached 1, from .92 last week,” said Dr. Ashley Lopez, City Health Office (CHO) acting chief and Focal Person of the Davao See AREA, page 11
