FDA issues advisory on safe use of candles

Anticipating that the demand for candles will mount as the All Soul’s Day approaches, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issues an advisory for the public on the safe use of candles. The FDA said they will inform candle manufacturers, importers and distributor to secure a License to Operate and apply for market authorization of their products from the agency for them to examine and certify that their products are safe and will not pose danger to one’s health. Under Republic Act No. 9711 or the FDA Act of 2009, candles are considered as health products, and are categorized as household hazardous substances or articles. In an advisory (FDA Advisory No. 2013-041), the agency said they will focus on the safety of the wicks, wax and scents and colors used in candles. The FDA said that candles with cotton and hemp wicks, as well as metal-free wicks are considered safe. According to FDA, scented candles that use essential oil are not See candles/p.11

CANTILAN, Surigao del Sur––Despite the ban on Danish seine fishing, locally known as liba-liba, fishermen are still using the method in the waters of three provinces in the Caraga Region. Alubijid-Laguindingan road now complete CAGAYAN de Oro City– –“The much talked and complained Alubijid road leading to the Laguindingan Airport in Misamis Oriental has been completed,” Sandra Florez, DPWH spokesperson said on Wednesday.
