Siblings Liana Nicole and Iman Mora made the finals in the women’s and men’s open category a family affair, as both emerged champions, doing the host city proud. Iman Mora scored a grand slam emerging champion in the Open Category for all three legs while sister Liana Nicole had two first place finishes and was second in the 1st Leg at Bonifacio Global City.

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that is performed without the use of ropes or harnesses. While it can be done without any equipment, most climbers use climbing shoes to help secure footholds, chalk to keep their hands dry, and bouldering mats to prevent injuries from falls (Wikipedia). For the past few years, Cagayan de Oro has hosted the last leg of this emerging

event due to the growing number of climbing enthusiasts in the city and Northern Mindanao. “We have climbers from Cebu, Dumaguete, Cavite, Bukidnon and Davao but around 70 percent of those who registered for the competition are from Cagayan de Oro,” said Eduardo L. Solana, Jr., general manager, Habagat Outdoor Equipment, which is organizing the last leg of the competitions held September 26-27, 2015 at Centrio Mall, which carried the apt tagline “Where Adventure Begins.” see full story/PAGE 5

Aspiring for an enlightened electorate in Cagayan de Oro By Mike Baños, Editor-at-Large

A network of nonpartisan, multi-sectoral organizations in Cagayan de Oro have come together to advocate for an enlightened electorate not only for the coming national and local elections next year, but beyond. Lambigit Igsoon para sa Hiniusang Pag-Uswag sa atong Katilingban (LIHUK or Involve Yourself Brethren for the Inclusive Prosperity of Our Society) was introduced to members of the People’s Council during their general assembly held 22 September 2015 at Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan (XU). The LIHUK network consists of schools, barangays, parishes and basic ecclesiastical communities (BECs) in Cagayan de Oro which seeks to educate voters and endow them with a principle-and-agenda based discernment to select the right candidates for the coming elections in coordination with national electoral watchdogs like the National Movement for Free Elections

(NAMFREL) and the Parish-Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV). “Lihuk aspires for political education, not only voters’ education,” said Nestor M. Banuag, Jr, director of the Kristohanong Katilingban para sa Pagpakabana (KKP), the social development arm of the XU Research and Social Outreach Department. “It will be officially launched on Saturday, 31 October 2015 at 2PM, Gaston Park.” “Through LIHUK’s Kuwentuhang Bayan, we not only brief voters on how to vote which has become very easy with the present system, but more so on how they view society, its issues and concerns, and their role in making it better.” Banuag said Kuwentuhan Bayan will also include a data gathering component on what voters’ perceive to be their priority issues and concerns are, so LIHUK can elevate it to the proper agencies and venues in its other involvements.

Sept. 20 general assembly of Task Force 2016 at DLSU in Manila.

Besides Kwentuhan Bayan, LIHUK will also have two other mainstream programs including Criteria Building and Monitoring and Election Monitoring. “However, even prior to Kuwentuhan Bayan, LIHUK is now engaged in its No-Bio, No-Boto campaign to encourage voters to register since according to the Legal Network For Truthful Elections (LENTE), Cagayan de Oro City is in the list of the top 20 regions/cities with the most number of voters without biometrics,” Banuag noted. Kuwentuhan ng Bayan aspires to undertake a massive political education in the barangays, schools and parishes. LIHUK is now consulting with the Archdiocesan Good Governance Apostolate (AGGAP) to see how this can be attained through the creation of Circles of Discernment and Transpartisanship. Providing fastest mobile internet service in the Philippines

Globe beats competition in LTE speed, coverage Globe Telecom provides the fastest LTE service in the Philippines, affirming the superiority of its mobile internet service and network infrastructure amid intensely competitive environment in the local telecommunications industry. Based on OpenSignal’s State of LTE report for the third quarter of 2015, Globe Telecom’s LTE download speed is at 10 Mbps, double its competition’s LTE download speed

of only 5 Mbps. Globe Telecom’s LTE download speed is comparable to territories/countries like Hong Kong (Smart Tone), India (Airtel), Norway (Telenor, Network Norway), Portugal (NOS), Indonesia (Indosat), which all registered a 10 Mbps download speed, and even higher than the 8 Mbps download speed in Russia (MTS), Malaysia (DiGi) and even US (AT&T, US Cellular, Sprint, C Spire Wireless).

While Globe Telecom’s download speed of 10 Mbps is considered adequate, its competition’s download speed of 5 Mbps dragged down the Philippines’ average LTE download speed to 8Mbps. OpenSignal specializes in mobile coverage mapping by crowdsourcing signal strength, data speed and reliability. In terms of LTE coverage, that of Globe is also superior at 41% against its competitor’s 36%. globe/PAGE 11

the mainstream media. With this increasing threat to enterprises and consumers alike we want to provide the highest security

‘Refugees’ - nowadays a new in-word or buzz word! Look around the world. One can find war and refugees all over. I am just back from Manila. The topic ‘refugees’ has been also the main topic while celebrating 25 years of Germany’s reunite or the final establishment of the Philippine-German Chamber of Commerce. It’s no secret anymore, that Bavarian State Premier Horst Seehofer widens rift with German Chancellor Angela Merkel over her refugee policy. Seehofer has mounted a direct attack on Angela Merkel’s asylum policy. The chancellor’s supposed conservative ally has now threatened her with constitutional action. On the day that Angela Merkel was being tipped to win the Nobel Peace Prize, her increasingly troublesome conservative ally Horst Seehofer unleashed a series of broadsides against the chancellor. Following a meeting of Bavaria’s cabinet, State Premier Seehofer, who also heads the

Christian Social Union, sister party to Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, threatened to take the federal government to the Constitutional Court if it did not agree to turn refugees back at the Austrian border as an “emergency measure.” “We are expressly of the opinion that immigration needs to be controlled and limited if we in Germany want to cope with it,” Seehofer told reporters, alleging that Berlin was “endangering the states’ independent capacity to act.” The statement backed up a pugnacious interview with Seehofer printed in Friday’s edition of the “Bild” newspaper, one of Germany’s leading dailies. Asked what Bavaria’s new asylum reforms would entail, he began by referring to measures promoting “integration, education, and training” before lobbing his grenade: “There will come explicit measures of self-defense to limit immigration, such as turning back people at the Austrian

border.” Though Seehofer conscientiously reiterated his support for Merkel in the rest of the interview - and was even forced to deny that he was out to topple her - the word “self-defense” set off alarm bells throughout the German and international media. Some newspapers saw it as a moment of deliberate and hostile authoritarianism: “State self-defense: that is threatening with methods from the ideology of an absolute state,” “Süddeutsche Zeitung” wrote. “The term selfdefense signals that a politician wants to do something that isn’t really legal, but which he thinks is necessary.” Let me guess: Is there an attack on the rule of law? Refugees’ rights groups were also quick to seize on the potential illegality that the word implied. “This is an attack on the rule of law,” Pro Asyl said in a statement. “A short process at the borders has no legal basis. According to EU law, Germany is not allowed

H ave M y Say

to turn back refugees to the neighoring state of Austria, only send them to the appropriate EU country.” Not only that, Pro Asyl added, “if refugees travel to Germany via Hungary or Austria, [Germany] must check whether a deportation to Hungary is even allowable under the European Convention on Human Rights.” But Stephan Dünnwald, of the Bavarian Refugee Council, said that it was legal to turn people back at the border without any asylum procedure though such a measure harked back to rarely enforced international agreements. “It’s never happened on this doring/PAGE 11

Gov. Emano lauds MisOr teachers October 10-16, 2015

M

isamis Oriental Gov. Bambi Emano commended teachers of the school division of the province led by Supt. Cherry Mae Limbaco, for the significant role they play on the formation of proper values and attitude of our children, during the recent celebration

of World’s Teachers Day, in one of the beach resorts in the province. “I salute your dedication and perseverance. You opt to stay in the classrooms because it is what your hearts say; and not what your pockets tell you. You guide, develop and mould the hope of this

nation despite many adversities in your own lives ,” Gov. Emano said. The Governor pledged to continue what he has done this year in terms of improving infrastructures for education, modernization of school facilities, the provision of

educationjal aids such as bags and notebooks, as well as improving access and opportuinities for education through the Local Schools Board (LSB). “We will pursue relentlessly the construction of more state-of-the-art school buildings, covered courts and

the concreting and rehabilitation of provincial roads so that daily commute of teachers and students will be more comfortable,” Gov. Emano added. He said he will continue to put computer-aidedinstructions in select schoolsm with the help of private

#DB200 at Ayala Centrio till Oct. 16 The travelling exhibit “St. John Bosco: God’s Gift to the Young,” has opened at the Ayala Centrio-CDO. This is the last stop of the exhibit’s southern tour. It is available for public viewing at the Foyer, Level 3 of Ayala Centrio until Friday, October 16, 2015. “St. John Bosco: God’s Gift to the Young” is part of a series of events celebrating

#DB200, the 200th birth anniversary of the saint who is hailed as the Father and Teacher of Youth. #DB200 shares basic information on the life and charism of the saint, inspiring many in the way they relate to the young and the poor. Don Bosco, as this extraordinary man is more popularly known, was born on August 16, 2015 near Turin, Italy.

Don Bosco recognized that God was calling him to something special when, at the age of nine, he had a series of dreamvisions in which he was instructed how, with the guidance of the Blessed Mother, he could turn violent, blasphemous poor boys (depicted in his dream as wolves) into meek, God-seeking individuals with kindness and gentleness. Ordained a priest in 1841, St. John Bosco dedicated his life to the service of abandoned young people. Driven by first-hand experience of the effects of poverty and lack of opportunity on these lads, he was determined to change their condition. He founded the Salesians whose goal was to continue responding to the needs of the young making of them “good christians and honest citizens.” Later, St. John Bosco, together with the nun Mary Domenica Mazzarello, now also a saint, founded the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. He also established the Association of Salesian Cooperators, a group of lay persons committed to assisting the religious in the works for the upliftment of the youth. Also in partnership with Philippine Airlines, the exhibit was brought to Ayala Mall – Abreeza, Davao City on October 1-7, 2015 and now in Ayala Mall – Centrio, Cagayan de Oro City on October 10-16, 2015. In Luzon, the exhibit will be viewed in Marquee Mall, Angeles City (Jan. 5 to 11, 2016), Harbour Point, Subic (Jan. 13 to 19, 2016), Bonifacio High Street, Taguig City (Jan. 25 to 31, 2016), and The District, Imus Cavite (Feb. 8 to 14, 2016). The organizers are inviting everyone to come and visit this exhibit at the different Ayala Malls.

Misamis Oriental Governor Bambi Emano gamefully acceded to requests of teachers to have him on their group pictures during the World Teachers Day celebration recently. The event was a welcome respite from the hectic schedule the Governor had in the past weeks. It was also a chance for Gov. Emano to renew old friendships as he met with childhood friends and classmates who are now in the field of education. (PIOfoto)

Alongside the interview with the CSU leader, the newspaper which launched its “We’re Helping” campaign for migrants a few weeks ago - published the results of a poll inviting readers to choose between Merkel’s “We’ll manage it!” statement and Seehofer’s “We can’t take any more!” Ninety percent of the more than 344,000 respondents agreed with Seehofer. But other polls have contradicted the dominant narrative that Germany’s “Welcome Culture” of the summer is being eroded. According to the results of a Forsa poll published by “Der Spiegel” on Friday, 44 percent of Germans have actively helped refugees this year, either through donations or volunteer work. 44 percent is not even the half. What stands behind it? Fact is, the refugee-

crisis is keep on influencing Germany’s and the European economy as well as the global economy. +++ Email: doringklaus@ gmail.com or follow me in Facebook or Twitter or visitwww.germanexpatinthephilippines.blogspot. com or www.klausdoringsclassicalmusic.blogspot. com.

mobile network technologies, 4G LTE offers much higher bandwidth, lower latency even as it increases overall network capacity. This allows customers to use more applications on their mobile devices. Crisanto said the continuing expansion of Globe network capacities is intended to provide its customers with holistic digital experience as the company continues to offer products and services that enhance the Filipino digital lifestyle. “Globe is committed in providing the right infrastructure support to ensure that the data needs of our customers are served, thus strengthening our position as the network of choice for smartphone users in the country. When it comes to mobile internet speed, we believe that the Philippines can compete globally but there is a need to distinguish between mobile and wireline,” she added. Amid ongoing network expansion, Globe capital expenditure this year is expected to reach $850 million. As of June this year, capex stood at P11.4 billion, bulk of which were allocated for data-related projects that include investments for the company’s broadband network, capacities for wireless data, LTE, domestic and international transmission facilities. “These findings prove our success in continuously expanding our network capacities amid ever-increasing demand for high-speed mobile internet access as more and more of our customers build their life and work experiences around a digital lifestyle,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications, noting that about a third of the company’s 48.4 million mobile customers are now using smartphones. As part of the company’s aggressive LTE rollout, the Globe network’s mobile ultrabroadband access in Visayas and Mindanao were expanded, utilizing the LTE-TDD and LTE-FDD technologies, Agustin said. The OpenSignal data is collected from real consumer smartphones and is recorded under conditions of normal usage. Rather than approximate the user experience, it is directly measured from the users of OpenSignal smartphone application, which can be freely downloaded on both iOS and Android devices, and thus it is able to constantly monitor the true network experience that users are getting on those devices. Through the app, OpenSignal is able to observe the network exactly as the end user experiences it. Such customercentric approach allows OpenSignal to measure the true endto-end experience of the mobile network. It isolated the networks in the Philippines by extracting all those points sent with network IDs corresponding to the brands operational there and then perform a geographical query to isolate only those data points that have been captured within the region. The different brands have been identified by investigating the network names associated with the SIM in the reporting device and the network which is serving the device.

MyPhone opens the First-ever Selfie Store! M yPhone will surely make your mobile phone shopping more fun with the first-ever MyPhone Selfie Store, at Cyberzone SM Mall of Asia, launched last October 4. The said launch was attended by MyPhone endorsers Devon Seron and Kyle Vergara. Other guest stars were StarStruck’s Faith de Silva, and

heartthrobs Brandon Bautista and Vince Soriano. Also present in the event were the MyPhone Team headed by its CEO and President David Lim, Dealers Leo and Ellen Bernardino, and MyPhone Selfie Store designer contemporary artist Leeroy New. The store’s aim is to invite more people to visit the

store and take their selfies in it. In a country known as the selfie capital of the world, customers would definitely try to get their wackiest shots taken in each stores distinct images. His experiential concept on the store design will definitely give people an out of this world selfie experience. The main aim

of the brand in creating these kinds of stores is to help promote young Filipino artists, which had been one of the company’s advocacies ever since. Given that different artists will be working on each of the store, there would be no similarities on their looks. The only connection these MyPhone stores have is its Filipino

heart shown in each of the crafts, complementing the heart embedded on the products it sells. The Selfie store is not just a feast for the eyes, but for your ears and mind as well. Rather than playing music, the store has a bunch of trivia for its visitors featuring exclusive contents from the MyPhone Pinoy App. Visitors will get to learn chunks of the country’s history and culture by simply listening from the wide variety of audio trivia clips. Contents played will vary from the most vital parts of the Philippine history, its heroes and famous artists, down to the local riddles or Bugtong and the famous cheesy pickup lines. “With the help of our homegrown artists, we will be able to make the

MyPhone Selfie store an image of the Philippines, everything beautiful in it. It will be about MyPhone and the heart embedded in it,” shared MyPhone CEO David S. Lim. The MyPhone Selfie store in SM Mall of Asia will not be the last store to be transformed into an artistic hub. MyPhone will be creating other selfie stores in major cities and provinces in the Philippines to promote the local art scene, and to continue its aim of uplifting the Filipino Pride. MyPhone will also have its MyPhone Selfie Store Contest. Just by taking selfies inside the stores and uploading it online, you’ll have the chance to win a MyPhone RIO Pixie.
