AVING the way for timely cultural events that have never been done in the metro, SM Lanang Premier organized an event inspired by the world’s largest food congress, the Madrid Fusión Manila, on April 24 to 26, 2015. The said event – Tapas Y Sangria – was a gastronomic feast that celebrated elements of Spanish cuisine. Held at the 2nd Level of The Fountain Court, it paid tribute to the Madrid Fusión, which brought together the most prestigious and innovative chefs from around the world to share their talents and expertise for the very first time in Manila at the SMX Convention Center. Tapas Y Sangria, as the name suggests, put the spotlight on the Tapas, a wide variety of appetizers and snacks, and Sangria, a fruitbased wine with its heritage well rooted in Spain. The event offered a venue where Spanish cuisine is accentuated and made accessible to mallgoers, Davaoeños and tourists alike.

the juggler Think a minute…There was a young man who moved from his home in Italy to live in America. He studied juggling and soon became famous all over the world. Later in his life, after years of success as a juggler and performer, he decided to return home to Italy and retire. He sold almost everything he owned and bought a big, expensive diamond. Then he boarded the ship for his home in Italy. One day he was showing a boy on the ship how he could juggle several apples at one time. Soon a crowd of the passengers gathered around to watch. Then the old juggler got more and more carried away with himself, wanting to impress the crowd. He ran to his room and got his precious diamond. He showed it to the people and explained how the diamond represented his whole life’s work and savings. Then, to the people’s shock and amazement, he started juggling the diamond! At first, he was careful; but each time he threw the diamond higher and higher. Finally, he told his audience that he would throw the diamond one last time so high that it would disappear for a few seconds. The people begged the old man not to do it, but he wouldn’t listen. So with the confidence of all his years of experience, the
juggler threw the diamond so high into the air that it actually did disappear, before it started falling back down, shining and sparkling in the sunlight. Then, just as he was about to catch the diamond, a huge wave suddenly caused the ship to move and lurch forward, causing the juggler not to catch his diamond, which fell into the ocean and sunk, lost forever. What a sad story. To risk and lose everything you own and have worked for all your life. Yet some of us are just like that juggler. We’re very confident in our own strengths and abilities. We want to be in control and live life our own way, even though our Maker has clearly shown us that the only way to really live successfully is His way. The only way to stay satisfied and safe is the way Jesus Christ showed us. Yet, we keep juggling with our own priceless life just one more day. But we never know when our life will suddenly end—and we will have lost our eternal life and suffer forever. Friend, for your own sake and happiness, why not ask Jesus to forgive you for all your wrongs and living your own way? Then ask Him to give you His power so you can start changing to live His way every day of your life—before it’s too late. Just Think a Minute …
At breakfast with leo
I
n recent years, I have met several interesting and prominent guests visiting Cagayan de Oro. The city attracts visitors from all over the world proving its growing charm as business and investment hub. Recently, I had breakfast with a very special person and interesting character, Leo Gough. He is a prominent financial journalist since the 1980s with over 35 published books. Leo was born in Britain but grew up in Turkey, the US and in Spain. He has now settled down in Singapore. While he was staying at Primavera Residences in Uptown CdO, I took advantage of his visit to question him about his work and his latest book. Much of his work involves traveling in different parts of the world and he has a particular liking to Asia and Asia Pacific region in which, he says, he has a strong faith in a positive long term growth all over the region. His latest book’s title is “The Con Men, a history of financial fraud and the lessons you can learn” published by Pearson and the Financial Times. “Leo, what is this book about?” I asked. He said, “This book wants to explain to ordinary investors why scandals in the financial markets occur. My mission in this book was to

It is a city with a lot of hope and potential. I am considering making some significant investments here. I love the people and the food and it is very pleasant to be here. I hope that the Laguindingan Airport becomes an international airport in its true sense very soon as it will do a lot for the growth of the province.” We definitely want more of Leo’s to come to Cagayan de Oro since the best way to promote a city is to invite prominent people and let them travel back and be the city’s brand ambassadors.

I was amazed by the deep knowledge Leo had about these subjects and was actually intrigued about his investigative journalism style focusing on financial frauds. One figure he gave was that an estimated ½ billion people around the world own publicly listed shares either directly or through collective vehicles such as mutual funds. Leo’s thought was very clear. One of the things he noticed was that when countries grow in their prosperity and economy, at particular stages they encounter certain specific types of fraud and bad investments which other people who are more experienced can immediately spot unlike people in newer economies. He really hopes this book will help to educate people about how to be more careful when investing.

He adds, “I have been writing about investments since the 1980s and every few years there is a scandal or a series of major scandals, often associated with a stock-market crash.” “As Warren Buffet has said , “when the tide goes out you see who is swimming without their underpants.” Leo further explained to me that during boom times,regulations, due diligence, official supervision and all the other checks and balances tend to become

n these eventful times with shouting for peace all around the globe but also with “lust after war”, with corrupt politicians and terrorism attacks against innocents and with cries for justice, it is very easy to forget moral and human values. People, don’t let this happen! Allow me to ask you a question: “What makes a modern person?” Technology and knowledge for sure? If not, we couldn’t operate with our computers or other skills, of course, belong to it. But more important are a attitudes and values, and our readiness for new ways of reacting, feeling and looking for things. I am afraid that we have to look first into ourselves. Everybody of us can notice our group feeling besides terrible egoism many times. We
care so much for the good of our own families and ourselves by making great sacrifices even for a long time. Charity starts and ends mostly at home. Why are we not able to develop fidelity that expands into a wider field of action so that we can go beyond the limits of our unsocial system and reach to others around us? We easily blame our governments. This happens in mostly every country worldwide. But don’t we only get the government that we deserve? Misuse, improper treatment, rude language and behavior, corruption these are all reflections of ourselves. The mistake, the injustice, the wrong sense of values, and the lack of priority through arrogance and ignorance are daily with us and simply our own.
A nation might have been rich with abundant blessings; it is only unfortunate that these blessings could not made useful because of some flaws in the entire system. Why do we have collapsing economies or huge foreign and national debts? Because human values are not put into place. It’s easier to fill own pockets then to care for a neighbor. Aren’t we paid for the service we rendered that we resort to other unlawful and shameful activities? Are we really prioritizing material things over and above spiritual satisfaction? We are becoming weaker and weaker when we lack punctuality, honesty, and task responsibility. We have to improve as human persons with national
pride, discipline, and consistency, because skills and knowledge or technology are not enough. We have to avoid too much subjective comments, sensitivity and being fancy and conceited of ourselves. If a nation like the Philippines is still rich of natural resources and intelligent, highly creative people, these people should prevent criticism from know-itall’s such as insufficiency, imbalance, or inequality. Moral and human values can only grow if we are willing to undergo to renewal of will, mind and heart. Let us give moral and human values a try. It could do great things to alleviate the economic life, to save us all from imminent spiritual degradation and to allow us to live in peace and harmony.

HERE else to go to during this upcoming long Independence Day weekend but Cagayan de Oro -- where an exciting festival celebrates the confluence of national and local holidays? Dubbed “HIMUGSO: Birthing a Nation, Birthing a City, Birthing Tomorrow” the joint celebration of the Philippines Independence Day on June 12 and Cagayan de Oro’s Charter Day on June 15 has traditionally been marked with a series of events to celebrate the two dates in history. However, for 2015, the Cagayan de Oro City Tourism Council recently approved a resolution recommending the city government dub the fourday period within the two celebrations as HIMUGSO. “The CTC has recommended the fourday period be dubbed HIMUGSO which is the Bisayan word for ‘birthing’ since it includes the June 12 Philippine Independence Day and June 15 Charter Day,” said Eileen E. San Juan, committee chair of the CTC Events and Marketing & Promotions Committees. “The word HIMUGSO also aptly refers to the birth or emergence of Cagayan de Oro City as a trailblazer in good governance and progress as evidences by its recognition as one of only nine Emerging Global Cities of Tomorrow at the World Urban Forum ( W U F ) i n Me d e l l i n , Colombia last May, 2104 by the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UNHabitat) and being twice cited as one of the Top 2 Most Competitive Cities in the Philippines in the last two years by the National Competitiveness Council,” she said. Besides the traditional flag raising and wreath laying on both dates, HIMUGSO will also include cultural shows and the traditional serenata at the Kiosko Kagawasan where local and visiting artists used to entertain the people, the revival of the inter-barangay Balak Competition (the Cebuano counterpart of the Tagalog Balagtasan) and the city eliminations

On January 10-11, 1899, Cagayan de Misamis (the old name of Cagayan de Oro) celebrated independence by organizing the so-called Fiesta Nacional. The people held a parade, played music, made speeches and fired cannonades outside the Casa Real. Filipinos declared the Aguinaldo Republic for the first time in Mindanao and raised the Philippine Flag in this island for only the second time.

CDO’s leading resort hotel successfully gave an enormous impact for Northern Mindanao’s boardsports scene.

HE first ever Skimboarding Competition dubbed as SHORE BREAKS organized by the leading resort hotel in Metro Cagayan de Oro, Apple Tree Resort and Hotel (ATRH),was indeed a huge success with the support of the local skim-boarders of Opol, Misamis Oriental and neighboring areas. Last May 16, 2015, the shoreline of the Municipality of Opol turned into an amphitheatre of the board-sport as 30 skim-boarders, 10 for the Kid Category and 20 from the Open Category showed their talents and skills of the said sport to compete to the finals and be the first one to be called, the Shorebreaker. Hosted by Mr Steve Norman Ebonia, a multiawarded local skimboarder, started the event with the Oath of Sportsmanship which was thenafter opened by Ms Bjanesha M. Emphasis (General Manager of ATRH). The local skim-boarders have successfully achieved to pull great tricks in the competition full of enthusiasm which attracted the younger generation from Opol. According to Ms Daphne Belle Maape, (Front Office and Concierge Supervisor of ATRH), there were more than 200 guests who graced the event during the day including the media partners and the sponsors. Additionally, “The Shore-breaks is a testimony of strong bonded board sports which gave a
significant impact to the growing skim boarding scene in Northern Mindanao”– Mr Clement Dampal II (Marketing and PR Officer of ATRH) said. “The success of the Shore-breaks gave an enormous impression in keeping the boardsport active in Opol and emerge as a mainstream sports competition that sooner will bring forth to a new season of Shore-Breaks 2: Skim-boarding competition within this year or next. We might be inviting Jaro Anillo and Manoy Bazar of JAROMANOY Skimboards on the second season and Arjun “A-smooth” Jimenez, one of the Top boardsport athletes in the Philippines.”- He added. The competition was a fun filled celebration of stoke and camaraderie which were spareheaded by the award winning judges, Michael “Don” Magracia, Champion of the 1st Mati Surfing Competition and a Rider of the Northmind Longboarding, Andrew “Slim” Rementizo, President of Team Higad Skimboarding Association, and Richard “Sasik” Dela Cruz, Champion of the National Skimboarding competition 2008 held at Bacuag, Lanuza, Surigao del Sur, Champion of the 1st Lugait Skimboarding competition 2003), and Champion of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd National Skimboarding competition (2004, 2005, 2006) held at Mergrande Ocean Resort, Davao City.

A total of 69 children graduated from a two-week reading and art summer classes conducted by COCPhinma. It was learned that the leading educational institution in the city, COC-Phinma Education Network, decided to hold summer reading classes for incoming kindergarten and first graders as part of their corporate social responsibility. Now on its second year, the reading and art classes are held for free with one-hour sessions each morning for the whole two weeks. In this 2015 batch, there were 48 incoming first graders. They were taught the basics in reading. There were also 21 incoming kindergarten pupils. They were taught the basics in art as well as an introduction to reading. According to COC-Phinma dean of Basic Education Ruth Balmores, they are accepting kids even though their parents would ultimately decide to not enroll their children at the institution the next school year. Still, most of the parents of the 69 kids were
convinced that they had initially chosen the right learning entity for their young loved ones. “I will definitely enroll my kid here. I can sense that COC-Phinma has paved the way for my child to enjoy and learn her elementary years here,” said parent Jan Tugonon, mother of Annika Jan, a very bubbly kid who seems to have mastered everything she has taught in the whole duration of the summer classes. There are three able teachers who managed the kids’ early learnings in life – Teacher Timmy, Teacher Aisa and Teacher Excy. Balmores said that that it was COC-Phinma which exclusively developed its own reading module to best adjust to the kids. During the culmination last May 12, each of the graduating kids received certificates and proudly stood along with their parents.

Misamis Oriental needs the output of the 15th annual conference of city and municipal agriculturists and technicians as he may use it as the solution on the effects of climate change issues on the province’s agriculture sector. “The success of our agriculture sector will also define how successful we a re on ou r ma i n development plan which is anchored on tourism.” Gov. Emano said in his message to the delegates. The Governor, who is an agriculturist by profession, said this is the main reason why all tourist spots developed in the several areas of the province, there is a comprehensive agricultural and marine development plans to provide farmers with viable livelihood projects. “ T hat i s why we
have these plans piggybacked with our tourism development plan because the success of our farmers mean we can feed those who will come to our province as tourists and ourselves. For if we cannot feed our own people, how can we satisfy the needs of our tourists?” Gov. Emano added. Further. he told the delegates t hat he wa s constrained to have a holistic approach to the development of the province after he found out it has limited funds but with so much indebtedness left to him by the previous administration. “However, our investors on the agricultural sector and farmers need to go on a critical paradigm shift as new issues arise brought about by climate change,” Gov. Emano added. He a lso told t he delegates that under his administration, the province
has under ta ken some innovative approches in increasing agricultural productivity on which upon hearing such, many of the delegates said they would recommend to their local chief executive for adoption and duplication. “One of t he su re measures on increasing agricultural productivity is through mechanized farming. But majority of those in the agricultural sector are small farmers who have no chance of acquiring any piece of farm equipment. That is why through our provincial agriculture office we have been plowing farms with the use of our tractor at no cost to the farmers; not even for gas,” Gov. Emano said.
