Here’s more about the book from the author: What is the story about? The story is narrated from the perspective of a seven-year-old boy, Agustin, who is now grown-up. He recalls his younger years on 17th Street with his family and his friends. His father was the editor of a leading newspaper in Cagayan de Oro, and his mother was a homemaker. Across them lived an
old woman, Iya Vellit, who lived alone in a nipa hut under a mango tree. Every time, a neighbour gave birth, Iya Vellit behaved strangely. She went to her gate, clutched the slats, listened intently as the mother delivered the baby, and afterward, she looked at the moon before going inside her hut. She was unkind to all but she reserved her unkindest cut for Agustin’s mother. Every
time Celia held a novena, Iya Vellit flipped out. She screamed at her and her guests. Her solitary life and odd behaviour earned her the reputation of being a witch. The rhythm of life on 17th Street was disrupted when a young woman with a son moved into the neighbourhood. Her presence changed the lives of Iya Vellit, Agustin’s parents, and their parish priest, Father Ramos. Because of this
young woman, Agustin’s father, the newspaper editor, was forced to confront the corrupt Regional Commander of the region, who later placed him in a tight spot that he had to choose between his career or the woman’s freedom. Meantime, Agustin and his friends, Noli and Rhuel, enjoyed their childhood on 17th Street. Their lives were marked with joy and fun mystery/PAGE 7
