I

n the past year or so, the growth of online users hooked to social media is fast rising. In the Philippines alone, more than 30 Million users are now registered on Facebook and 10 Million users are using Twitter.

These data just shows we are a force to reckon with in the online world. Since the days of Friendster and Yahoo Messenger, Filipinos as a community gather online to get together, share and keep abreast with what is going on in the country and the fate of the Filipinos abroad.

The convenience of internet communications is to our advantage. Quick response and the speed on which we relay information is just what we all look for.

But in as much as the internet and the boom of social media created a virtual Philippines on the internet and united all of us on cyberspace, with the string of calamities and political controversies that plagued our nation, social media has become a “war zone” of ideas, ideologies, opinions and propaganda.

The information we get every time we read our newsfeeds are a barrage of so many varying opinions that one vomits from information overload.

In this time of national mourning, do we really need to resort to bashing, mudslinging and fingerpointing? Some said as form of our expression of

ne week from Yolanda’s record breaking destructive force, one is confronted with the aftermath of such a devastation: hundreds and thousands of our countrymen left homeless, loss of their livelihoods, and death.

We see on television and hear on radio, the massive destruction, and the cries for help, not only for their basic needs: food, water, medicine, and shelter, but, also help in finding members of their families.

And, once again, the stench of death, with hundreds of bodies lying on the roads and underneath the rubbles of destroyed structures, be it a house or a building, raises the fear of these dead bodies becoming a source for diseases.

It is not uncommon to hear people verbalize their fears of increased exposure to diseases due to the presence of dead bodies that may yet take time for their retrieval for burial.

It is thus, to the best interest of everyone, to know truth versus fallacies regarding these matters. There is no scientific evidence at all that bodies of disaster victims increase diseases

and epidemics. The health risks is nearly non-existent.

Once a person dies, the natural process of decomposition and putrefaction occurs.

The micro-organism responsible for this process is E. Coli, which is a normal resident of every human body, and it causes the breakdown of the flesh during death. The foul odor that emits from these cadavers are caused by the release of cadaverine and putrescine, which can only become toxic if these are ingested in massive doses.

The theory then that foul odors cause spread of diseases is nothing but a fallacy. However, we cannot fault our people from saying so, as, this is but a natural reaction after a traumatic experience.

What becomes a health hazard, are two-fold: first, if the dead person had a chronic illness like Hepatitis B, C, HIV/AIDS, and other contagious diseases like Tuberculosis and Cholera.

The hazard is to the health worker or member of the rescue team, as they retrieve the corpses. Second, should these cadavers get to be buried in areas where it may contaminate

sources of water supplies, as there may be spillage of intestinal contents from these bodies making Gastroenteritis a huge problem among the living.

EXCEPT for the stench and foulest of odors, it is truly safe to say that dead bodies are not dangerous to the living’s health.

The dead does no harm to the living.

The focus of efforts in calamities then should be directed not towards spraying disinfectants in the surrounding areas, but, in helping the ones that are still living: making sure that there is shelter, warmth and the provision of hygienic and nutritious food to the survivors.

Clean and safe water as well as sanitation, and treating those that are sick.

There is so much to do as yet, as we each help rebuild the lives of the survivors... But, if we all join hands in reaching out to them, whether it be our time to help repack goodies, service the sick, share our monies to help buy the basic necessities that they need, or, prayers for heaven’s help, nothing is ever too small or too big. Let’s make a difference and be made a part for a New tomorrow...

Even as I recall my own experience with the after math of Sendong, to pass through huge mud slides at Talakag ,barefoot without getting hurt ( God knows what we could stepped on with that mountain of mud on the road) but we came home without getting hurt physically. He is faithful indeed.

Now seeing the aftermath of Yolanda to the Visayas region makes our heart bleed. As a nation the most that we can do now is help in whatever way we can. If two young girls from a foreign country can sell Ice tea and Lemonade for typhoon victims, then how much more for us Filipinos? Aside from giving out the next best thing we can do is PRAY not only for the victims but even for our government leaders that God may give them the wisdom in sorting things out. That God will give them the courage to face this catastrophe with hope because after all “we” look up to them as our leaders.

This is no time for blame game but to support each other in this time of crisis. But even in the midst of it all let us remember that God is Faithful.

relationships. It delves into issues about the frustrations of human interactions and missed connections.

Shift Happens is a segment play that tackles issues on human transformation, environmental problems, poverty and political injustice.

It basically shows the outcomes and potential solutions of all unfavorable circumstances that need abrupt action.

It presents a challenge to the people that if apathy continues to reign, then surely a huge shift in the world will happen.

The Boxes is a play on terrorism and its oppressive effects on the life of the terrorists themselves.

It is an atmospheric play, full of premonitions and dread, its hints and clues thrown about and coming together, more or less, as the play builds up and reaches its climax.

Call it what you will: a play about the passage unto death or about the violence of urban terrorism, or about the oppression of souls caught in the service of an impersonal organization.

Any way you see it, The Boxes provokes a sense of disquiet, a sense that all is not well, and that danger lurks when you least expect it. It is not a play with a happy ending.

Privilege Speech on Automotive Manufacturing Industry Congressman Rufus B. Rodriguez delivers a privilege speech in the plenary of the House of Representatives in connection with automobile industry in the country. He is pushing for the passage of his bill protecting the local automotive manufacturing industry. He is also pushing for the passage of his bill on granting tax breaks on hybrid vehicles. With these bills, he hopes that our country will be the ones exporting automobiles to our neighbors instead of the Philippines importing from Thailand and Indonesia among others.

True that social media is a vital tool to connect it has also become a tool to engage into intellectual warfare. The kind where words hurt more than any physical blow and would take more than enough comforting to heal. During the early days when Yolanda struck, people started to pour in their

sentiments online. I was one of those countless people that expressed dismay on the way the disaster relief operation unfolds.

Words flow from my walls and I eventually got flooded by those who are with me and those who thought my views should never have been uttered at all.

The mixed reviews on my posts brought me back to my senses that indeed as we say what we want to say, our words can influence people and trigger a ripple effect.

So after days of lamenting and gasping for understanding on the tragedy that befall our country, I have decided to shift gears and instead make use of social media

to once again unite people in my own way. I have banded with other online users to make a good cause into action, we will stretch to all network of friends to invite them to journey with us in bringing hope and love to those who got affected by the super typhoon.

This is a magnanimous task but for sure not an impossible one.

Now, the energy that fuels me to make social media a tool for change are the amazing outpouring of support from my online friends here and abroad.

This positive vibe made living in our so-called online village more meaningful and tangible once again.

LONDON - It’s not hard to see why Anthony Chen won the Camera d’Or for best debut feature at Cannes this year, beating such higher-profile candidates as “Fruitvale Station.”

Assured, humane delicacy is always an attractive quality to festival juries wary of more swaggering talent, and it’s one his warmly melancholy domestic drama “Ilo Ilo” (unsurprisingly selected as Singapore's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar) has in spades.

Light on story and heavy on curdled sentiment, this study of a communication-challenged middleclass Singaporean family weathering the country’s 1997 financial crisis – and numerous finer household fractures besides – has immodest formal reach behind its softly-softly approach.

“Has watched a lot of Edward Yang,” I scrawled at one point in my notes, regarding Chen’s still, patiently gazing direction: his canvas may be smaller than those of the prematurely late Taiwanese auteur, but it’s similarly lit and textured, similarly dedicated to the gracious in the everyday. But then, all humanism is appropriated to some extent: sometimes from other artists, more often from unsuspecting ordinary people. “Observational” is a blanket critical term for nice, character-driven films about little in particular, and much in general – though such films don’t always seem to be looking all that intently at their subjects. In its best, hardest moments, “Ilo Ilo” does.

It’s principally a Tamagotchi – tossed rashly from a car window in one of the film’s many instances of casual parental ineptitude – that tips us off to the film’s Nineties setting, since its portrayal of spirit-fraying economic strain should be familiar to more than a few present-day viewers.

Mischief-prone pre-teen lad Jiale (Koh Jia Ler) and his parents are scarcely keeping their heads above water: Dad (Chen Tian Wen) has lost his sales job, and daren’t tell his brisk-tempered, heavily pregnant wife (Yeo Yann Yann), whose stressful secretarial position is the family’s chief source of income.

Jiale may not comprehend the specifics of the situation, but he can pick up on his parents’ edgy nerves, which only makes him act out even more brazenly than usual.

The family’s barely affordable solution is to hire an au pair from the Philippines – standard practice in Singapore – to keep him in line.

Initially, he can scarcely be civil to Terry (the excellent Angeli Bayani), a permissive but proud young woman with parental experience of her own – particularly as the two are rather cruelly forced to share sleeping quarters.

When the thaw comes, Chen’s spare but porous script is careful not to attribute it to any significant event or realization; rather, this is a love story of getting used to people, then fond, then dependent. The audience scarcely clocks how familial Jaile and Terry’s relationship has grown – she's part guardian to him, part sister – before his ever-more-distant parents, with tacit dismay, do the same.

That’s in large part because Jiale himself is so difficult to read: those accustomed to winsomely precocious

child protagonists in such films will be effectively disconcerted by this prickly, inarticulate but encouragingly curious kid. That characterization is one of Chen’s smartest, most surprising moves, raising the stakes of this defiantly small drama: winning Jiale’s affection, and returning it in kind, seems an achievement rather than a narrative requirement.

(Much credit must go, of course, to Koh’s exuberant but affectation-free performance.) I only wish Chen had been equally fair in sketching Jaile’s alternately testy and clueless parents; his work-weary, perma-scolding mother, in particular, often takes the brunt of the film’s skepticism about Singaporean middle-class values, but is granted few surges – flickers, even – of unguarded feeling.

“Ilo Ilo” craves such human color: it takes place largely in a plasticine-colored landscape of urban conformity, its drab prefab apartments only occasionally cast in hopeful, pastel-accented daylight by cinematographer Benoit Soler.

portrait#5gdMjQ3i0C2BbEg4.99 Director Anthony Chen’s ILO ILO took home not one but two prizes at the 15th Mumbai International Film Festival, bringing its total awards haul to 11.

Chen won for Best Director while Yeo Yann Yann clinched the Best Actress award, under the International Competition for First Feature Films of Directors. This is a new section on experimental titles and works by artists from other sectors.

The jury, which was presided

by Oscar nominated Australian film director Bruce Beresford, awarded Ilo Ilo over other contenders including Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s directorial debut Don Jon, starring Julianne Moore and Scarlett Johansson.

“What can be a better virgin trip to India? It’s my first time here!” Chen told TODAY on his way to the airport, directly after the awards ceremony .

He was on his way to board a plane to Ukraine, where Ilo Ilo is in competition in Kiev at the Molodist International Film Festival.

“We were told that Ilo Ilo was the longest queue at the festival this year. And at the premiere screening yesterday, audiences had to wait 40 minutes for the film to start due to over-crowding! What a response!” he exclaimed.

More than 200 films from over 65 countries were screened at this year’s Mumbai Film Festival.
