Entrepreneurs share value of attending business expos; share tips By Ma. Cristina C. Arayata

MANILA -- Most Filipinos hear 90.7 Love Radio DJ Nicole Hyala every morning. Do you know she’s also an entrepreneur? Nicole Hyala (or Emmy Gaite Tiñana) is on her third year as franchisee of Peanut World. She told the Philippines News Agency (PNA) she learned about Peanut World through attending a franchise and business expo. She was present during the opening day of the 14th Franchise and Business Expo: Empowering Entrepreneurs, which is slated from Oct. 2-4 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

Around 300 exhibitors have joined this event organized by the Association of Filipino Franchisers Inc. (AFFI). As an entrepreneur, Nicole Hyala said the challenge is on manpower. “The problem really is maintaining the right people, those who will be honest,” she said. The ‘Tambalan’ co-host also cited lean season as another challenge. Nicole Hyala’s advice for fellow entrepreneurs is to keep their feet on the ground, and to love what they do. Jelyn Chung, manager of Acqua Suisse Perfume Bar, meanwhile, cited exposure as main benefit from join-

ing a business expo. She shared it’s her fourth or fifth time to join the AFFI’s franchise and business expo this year. Acqua Suisse Perfume is available in the market since 2007. Jelyn’s brother, John, thought of something that should be very unique and eye-catching. Their perfume is the only brand in the Philippines that we would see colorfully placed in wine bottles. The scent/oil, according to Chung, comes from Switzerland and they manufacture it locally. The company offers refills and Acqua Suisse Perfume can be franchised in cart or kiosk form.

To be competitive in the perfume industry, Chung emphasized the importance of innovation. “You have to be innovative with the look, packaging as well as the overall look of the kiosk,” she told PNA, and added that the scent has to be trendy, too. The packaging they offer is a pillow box, which is suitable for gift-giving. At present, Chung’s product offers 24 scents (12 for men, 12 for women). Among the best sellers for women include Blue Sky, Always and Sun Down, while Army, Power, Quest and Refreshing are their best sellers for men. She said their family business actually started as supplier of scents to manufacturers. Then they offered head-to-toe beauty products, until her brother thought of having their own perfume line. Chung cited they plan to expand branches and go global, particularly in Vietnam and China. Currently, Acqua Suisse Perfume has 56 branches (including franchisees and company-owned). L i ke Ni c ol e Hy a l a , Chung also cited finding trustworthy staff a major challenge in running a business. “Since we offer refills, there are those who might be adding an ml or two, and those who do not report (the refill),” she explained. She added that sometimes, the malls’ locations and traffic are also a challenge. Acqua Suisse Perfume is available in malls. Meanwhile, the 14th Franchise and Business Expo aims to advocate responsible franchising and promote homegrown businesses. Apart from providing the entrepreneurs an avenue to showcase their business concepts, the expo also showcases several seminars/forums where the public could learn from seasoned entrepreneurs. (PNA)

On our Philippine history

I HAVE been reading a lot of discrepancies or inconsistencies relative to past events in our country--a matter that involves the books of history. Sometimes the differences depend so much on the skill or knowledge of the authors on past events which perhaps were based on interviews from old folks. I remember interviewing an old woman whose family claimed she was 105 years old. Of course, I cannot disagree with on their allegations, but as I looked at her, she must be about 90 years old only. I am not surprised because some of the authors are modern day Filipinos who also gathered information from history teachers. Many of these teachers derived their ideas from books written by foreigners who came to our country, thus some distortions or failures developed. Always there is disagreement on important matters specially on dates, names and others. What hit me so hard is the fact that history should be the actual happening of events and not based from presumption, speculation or mere ideas of the writers. But what else can we do but

believe in whatever is there for the moment. In return, we pass on to our youngsters what we think is the truth and so on until generations come and the matter remains the same. For instance, some people think General Luna was assassinated on the orders of some Filipino leaders who were in power during the revolution. Others even thought Luna was murdered by his own men. Whatever was the reason, Luna was indeed a fighter during his time and has led his men into great battles against the enemies. The movie entitled Heneral Luna has brought up reasons to doubt to many people. Certainly, every scene is accepted as truth to others and this is where

discrepancies occur. Lately a foreigner wrote something that stirred the minds of people and even created an arena where debates and opposing arguments cropped up. It was about his thought that then Sen. Ninoy Aquino, father of our president, was a national hero. It was true the death of Aquino at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport upon his arrival was presumed the result of political rivalry, but other than that has no bearing on his becoming a national hero. Until this moment, Rizal is our national hero, although it is a fact we have many heroes. Because of numerous controversies on the issue of history, we are giving our youngsters in the high school doubts and confusion regarding the truth of past events. We have only one national hero, we have one national flower, one national anthem, etc. and beyond that has distorted history. The problem is we cannot rewrite history and whatever inconsistencies that surround it will remain as facts.

no example from history to follow,” Gauck said in a keynote speech, part of three days of festivities to mark the silver anniversary of reunification. “But unlike then, those which previously didn’t belong together will now grow together.” The capitalist West Germany and the communist East reunited on October 3, 1990 , finalizing a process that began with the fall of the Berlin Wall nearly a year earlier. A massive three-day party for Germany’s Unity Day is underway in Frankfurt, the capital of the state of Hesse. The festivities kicked off on Friday under the banner, “Overcoming Borders,” and are expected to draw hundreds of thousands of people to the riverside city. Since 1990, the historic date has been a national public holiday. Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, is expected to receive up to 1 million refugees this year - more than any other European country. Gauck urged for patience with the integration of migrants, saying it would take time for new arrivals to adjust to a different social order, “which is not frequently in conflict with their own traditional norms.” He praised the warm welcome refugees had received

“MY MOTHER said I must always be intolerant of ignorance, but understanding of illiteracy. That some people, unable to go to school, were more educated and more intelligent than college professors,” says Maya Angelou, an American author, poet, dancer, actress, and singer. THE implementation of the K to 12 (K to twelve) enhanced basic education program of the Department of Education (DepEd) next school would mean an additional two years of pain, tears, and sacrifices for both parents and students. But wait! According to the frequently asked questions (FAQs) posted by the education department on its website has this replies: “Not necessarily.” And to back up its “may be yes” and “may be no” replies, the education department brags: “Senior High School ‘completes’ basic education by making sure that the high school graduate is equipped for work, entrepreneurship, or higher education. This is a step up from the 10-year cycle where high school graduates still need further education (and expenses) to be ready for the world. “SHS will be offered free in public schools and there will be a voucher program in place for public junior high school completers as well as (Education Service Contracting (ESC) beneficiaries of private high schools should they choose to take SHS in private institutions. “This means that the burden of expenses for the additional two years need not be completely shouldered by parents.” Well, the first paragraph in an indirect reply. Irrelevant. In basketball: “Defense!” Depensa gyud. The second paragraph tells us that K+12 is free in public schools. The right reply to this is: “Trulse!”

Don’t give up

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” -Galatians 6:9

Juvy Sarraga

Some days are simply overwhelming and cause us to want to give up. God desires us to be persistent in our good work. Maybe you’re trying to mend a broken

relationship with a family member and some days are very tough. Sometimes work can be hectic and unforgiving. And sometimes it’s a dream of yours to work on something that you’re passionate about and gifted in. There are peaks and valleys for all of these journeys, but remember to be strong, hopeful, and believe in your heavenly father.

Isuzu CDO debuts 5 truck, van models in Ketkai roadshow By MARK FRANCISCO, Staff member

ISUZU Cagayan de Oro, or known locally as Cebu Southern Motors, Inc., is currently holding an outdoor exhibit of four new van models and one new truck model that were introduced to the Philippine market just this year.

The display, which will run through Friday at Limketkai Parking Lot D, features the following models – NQR (a dropside van), NHR (a rivetless aluminum van), NPR (a rivetless aluminum van) FVM (a wing van) and EXZ (a tractor). According to Isuzu Philippines Corporation product planning manager Robert Carlos, the NQR is designed for construction firms transporting various materials to their sites. It has

passed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2010 standards and is the only one in its class to offer selective catalytic reduction technology with diesel exhaust fluid. This means that under normal highway conditions, the diesel exhaust fluid will regenerate itself automatically to remove particulate matter from the exhaust. Curb to curb, the NQR prides itself as the most maneuverable in its class – and far more nimble

than any conventional truck could ever hope to be. Meanwhile, the NHR and the NPR rivetless aluminum vans are designed mostly to transport perishable goods. With power windows, door locks, tilt/telescopic steering wheel and driver-friendly instrumentation, there’s nothing else you’d ask for. But wait there’s more. The Isuzu N diesel series deliver torque at low RPM for effortless pulling power and a Hexapod design that maximizes cargo space. Not to be outperformed, the FVM wing van also features larger space for easier ingress and egress with a total of 25 tons GVW rating. Its 6HK1-TCN diesel

engine is intended for better mileage performance that will take both your products and business farther. And its double axle rear suspension provides a firm grip while maintaining minimal noise and vibration, seamlessly adapting with changing road conditions. Lastly, the EXZ tractor is capable to haul fully loaded tankers and 40-footers. Every facet of this lovely truck

Bayan Muna slams closure of ‘Fr Pops’ school in B’non THE partylist group Bayan Muna has strongly condemned the closure order of a lumad school by a village chief in Kitaotao, Bukidnon. The Fr. Fausto Tentorio Memorial School in Barangay White Culaman in Kitaotao town, Bukidnon was ordered closed last October by Barangay Captain Felipe Cabugnason because of alleged ties with the New People’s Army (NPA). “This is a brazen anachronistic red-tagging tactic made by the military and echoed by local government officials in the pursuit of the government’s already discredited counter-insurgency operations,” said Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate, who hails from Mindanao. “It is a tragedy that the efforts made by some support organizations and the lumads themselves to break free from their marginalization are now being attacked,” Zarate said. Duterte calls on persons-with-authority establish rapport with soldiers By Joey Sem G. Dalumpines of PIA

DAVAO City--Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, chair of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) in Davao Region urged mayors, barangay chairs and teachers and persons with authority to establish good rapport with the security sector to harmonize relationships in responding to the needs of the people, particularly safety and security. He made the statement during the RPOC 3rd Quarter meeting Wednesday, following an interview where leaders of the Island Garden City of Samal allegedly called for

the soldiers to come amid the abduction in the Ocean View Resort where three foreign nationals and one Filipinas were taken away by eleven armed men and consequently claimed that no one responded. “It takes more than just knowing that the soldiers are there. You have to go out also and talk to them and establish good rapport,” Duterte said. He underscored that under the administrative law, persons with authority like the mayors, barangay chairs and educators must connect with the soldiers not only when there is a need for action. Duterte said persons in

government must work as one with cohesion. “If the soldiers do not want to go to your office, you go to their camp and talk,” he said citing that it is the protocol he follows where he no longer waits to be invited by the soldiers to talk about the problems affecting the community. Duterte described the abduction in the Ocean View resort at the IGACOS as a case of Murphy’s Law. The Wikipedia defines Murphy’s Law as a saying which says, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” “If it happened in Dos Palmas in Palawan, it can also happen in Samal,” he said. Duterte surmised that the Abu Sayyaf Group truly identifies its target. He said when the abductors entered in the premises of the resort, they divided themselves into two groups and searched for their targets. “There are speculations that it has something to do either with money or the

extortion activities of the enemies of the state,” Duterte said. He also believed that somewhere in the Davao Gulf, the abductors were fetched with speedboats using powerful engines since they were able to reach Sulu in just six hours. “It is definite that they are in Jolo,” Duterte said. The Police Regional Office 11 reported that the abduction in IGACOS was a major setback in the security set up of Davao Region even if it was considered as an isolated incident since it grossly affected the tourism industry. Senior Superintendent Michael John Dubria, chief of the Regional Plans Division of the PRO 11 in his report said strong partnership and collaboration among stakeholders is a strong factor against any untoward incident. “Strengthened, proactive security measures lessen the vulnerability of the public from any and all criminal activities,” he said. P166.5M farm-to-market roads, a path to lasting peace, progress By AURELIUS ARAIS

BISLIG CITY, Surigao del Sur--Rural infrastructure stirs farming activities, opens up economic opportunities, speeds up development and contributes to lasting peace in conflictaffected areas. This was how Department of Agriculture Assistant Secretary Edilberto De Luna described his department’s effort in implementing farm-to-market road (FMR) projects especially in Surigao del Sur. The rovince

has been in the news for issues about its indigenous people. ASEC De Luna visited the province and led the turnover of three multi-million DA-implemented FMR projects through the Payapa

at Masaganang Pamayanan (PAMANA) program last September 29. Totaling P166.5 million, the projects includes the concreting of P2.41-kilometer San Roque, Cadangalasan FMR in Sirio Mabog, San Roque, Cadanglasan, Bislig City connecting the boundary of Bunawan amounting to P33.3 million, concreting of the 5.42-kilometer Diatagon Km. 16 (Lianga) connecting Sitio Lagangan,

Caras-an – Tago FMR amounting to P66.6 million, and road opening and concreting of 5.29-kilometer Barangay Lubo, Cantilan – Barangay Panikian, Carrascal FRM amounting to P66.6 million. De Luna emphasized his department’s support for President Aquino’s fivepoint agenda aimed at Surigao del Sur’s economic development, justice and lasting peace.

“Solving the problem on peace matters is not merely using firearms but by giving livelihood within the service areas being cultivated with various agricultural crops such as banana, rice, and root crops due to accessibility of transport to the main highways leading to the nearest market. De Luna made the assurance that the FMRs could withstand various weather conditions to last for longer periods for the benefit of the people. DA-Caraga Regional Director Edna Mabeza urged the residents to avail themselves of DA’s interventions under the banner programs covering rice, corn, highvalue crops and organic agriculture to further oost the agricultural sector in the area. “DA has various projects

and services that you can avail of by coordinating with your city or municipal agriculture officer so we can extend our services such as planting materials. By the time you have enough produce, we can probably put up a processing plant,” Mabeza said. The Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan is a national government convergence program that extends interventions to isolated, hard-to-reach and conflict-affected communities, ensuring that they are not left behind in and have access to development. LEAN energy, otherwise known Rant and rave as renewable energy, is energy that is generated from natural resources––resources that are 100-percent renewable.

From water and wind to solar power and even hydro energy, there are a number of clean options available. In general, however, many of us are used to the standard gas and oil options; this is understandable as not only are these sources easily available to the masses but generally cheaper too. Fossil fuels If nothing else, the majority of us use gas and oil as a result of habit. We have been heating our homes, powering our cars and getting electricity via these sources for as long as anyone can remember. However, the damage fossil fuels inflict on the environment is untold. Coal, oil and gas release harmful emissions that cause incredible damage to the environment and as a result for many years we have been encouraged to opt for renewable energy resources instead. What can using clean energy do? For those new to it all or wondering just how much impact changing to clean energy can have, keep the following points in mind…

There are many forms of renewable energy. Most of these renewable energies depend in one way or another on sunlight. Wind and hydroelectric power are the direct result of differential heating of the Earth’s surface which leads to air moving about (wind) and precipitation forming as the air is lifted. Solar energy is the direct conversion of sunlight using panels or collectors. Biomass energy is stored sunlight contained in plants. Other renewable energies that do not depend on sunlight are geothermal energy, which is a result of radioactive decay in the crust combined with the original heat of accreting the Earth, and tidal energy, which is a conversion of gravitational energy. Solar. This form of energy relies on the nuclear fusion power from the core of the Sun. Wind Power. The movement of the atmosphere is driven by differences of temperature at the Earth’s surface due to varying temperatures of the Earth’s surface when lit by sunlight. Wind energy can be used to pump water or generate electricity, but requires extensive areal coverage to produce significant amounts of energy.

SOLAR-POWERED PLANTS. Screen grabbed image from blog.adafruit.com showing the two floating mega-

solar power plants, a joint venture of Kyocera Corporation and Century Tokyo Leasing Corporation, at Nishihira Pond and Higashihira Pond in Kato City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.

The economic benefit of creating renewable energy is vast. • Climate change and global warming is an increasingly worrying issue and with fossil fuels releasing a harmful amount of carbon emissions, making the change to clean energy will have an exceedingly positive impact on the environment. With almost no harmful emissions, renewable energy solutions will ensure that no further

Forms of renewable ‘energy’

damage is done. • One of the main worries of using fossil fuels is that eventually and worryingly now sooner rather than later, these sources will run out. There is an ever growing concern that supplies of coal, oil and gas will begin to run low but with renewable energy this is never an issue. • Increasing prices and

the worry that any political issues between nations may limit the resources available is always a possibility. From restrictions to complete bans there is no guarantee that oil supplies will always be shipped to every country that requires it. In contrast, each country is capable of creating its own renewable energy, what could be more reliable? With each country establishing its own wind power, solar power or hydro power plants, there is an incredible potential for hundreds of jobs to be created. The economic benefit of creating renewable energy

Tuna canneries get poor scores

AFTER months of research and monitoring, The Greenpeace Philippines has released a tuna ranking of nine local canneries based on international sustainable and equitable fisheries guidelines. It found that almost all the local canneries surveyed scored poorly indicating just how the industry is not doing enough to address the problem of rampant illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishThe Hapsay Sapa Council holds the multi stakeholders’ forum to collate all the proing in the country. grams and action plans for Bitang-ag Creek on September 30 at Patrick Cronin Hall, St. Augustine Cathedral, Cagayan de Oro City. is vast. Going green is great for the environment and in the wake of continuingly strange weather conditions and a worry that the issue of global warming is being ignored by the masses; this is the ultimate way to combat the growing issue. Whether you are unsure of the real impact of clean energy or have convinced yourself that it is all just a myth, hopefully now you know exactly how going green can positively impact the environment. Hydroelectric energy. This form uses the gravitational potential of elevated water that was lifted from the oceans by sunlight. It is not strictly speaking renewable since all reservoirs eventually fill up and require very expensive excavation to become useful again. At this time, most of the available locations for hydroelectric dams are already used in the developed world. Biomass. Biomass is the term for energy from plants. Energy in this form is very commonly used throughout the world. Unfortunately the most popular is the burning of trees for cooking and warmth. This process releases copious amounts of carbon dioxide gases into the atmosphere and is a major contributor to unhealthy air in many areas. Some of the more modern forms of biomass energy are methane generation and production of alcohol for automobile fuel and fueling electric power plants. Hydrogen and fuel cells. These are also not strictly renewable energy resources but are very abundant in availability and are very low in pollution when utilized. Hydrogen can be burned as a fuel, typically in a vehicle, with only water as the combustion product. Geothermal power. Energy left over from the original accretion of the planet and augmented by heat from radioactive decay seeps out slowly everywhere, everyday. In certain areas the geothermal gradient (increase in temperature with depth) is high enough to exploit to generate electricity. This possibility is limited to a few locations on Earth and many technical problems exist that limit its utility. Another form of geothermal energy is Earth energy, a result of the heat storage in the Earth’s surface. Soil everywhere tends to stay at a relatively constant temperature, the yearly average, and can be used with heat pumps to heat a building in winter and cool a building in summer. This form of energy can lessen the need for other power to maintain comfortable temperatures in buildings, but cannot be used to produce electricity. Other forms of energy. Energy from tides, the oceans and hot hydrogen fusion are other forms that can be used to generate electricity. --altenergy.org

The Filipino-Chinese community in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental celebrated the 66th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China with a cultural celebration at the Atrium of the Limketkai Center last Friday, October 1st, in solidarity with other Chinese communities in China and around the world. Known as the National Day in China, the cultural event was preceded by a video presentation of China armed struggle during World War II against Japan. This was followed by the singing of the national anthems of both the Philippines and the PROC and cultural presentations including the Dragon and Lion dances and various other dances and musical numbers presented by students from Kong Hua School and Oro Christian Grace School. For the finale, prominent FilipinoChinese leaders led by Mr. Johnny Lim raised a toast to the founding anniversary of the PROC followed by a community singing of “March of the Volunteers”, also formally known as the National Anthem of the PROC. Fresh from a visit to

Cebu where he attended the 66th founding anniversary celebration of the (PROC) and the MidAutumn Festival at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel last Sunday, Greg Marten Lao, president of the Misamis Oriental FilipinoChinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (MOFCCCII) said the local event is meant to improve understanding and bilateral relations between the two countries as stated in the message of newly appointed China Consular General Song Ronghua in his message to over a hundred FilipinoChinese in Cebu. “Facing the future, we should shoulder a common historical mission to develop the economy and build a harmonious Asia. Therefore, the two countries have no excuses to quarrel and should well develop their relations,” Mr. Song said. Relations between the two countries have been strained lately owing to tension arising from both countries claims in the West Philippine Sea, a portion of the South China Sea. “Certainly, it is only natural that countries have some different propositions and views,

and normal that they have disparities and contradictions in interests, but this should not be an obstacle for them to keep normal relations,” Song said in his speech, as reported in a Cebu daily. The Consul General said economic partnership between China and the Philippines continues, especially now that China has replaced the United States as the Philippines’ second largest trading partner, after Japan. Song said bilateral trade between the two countries now stands at US$40 billion while tourists from his country are now the fourth largest in the Philippines in terms of arrivals. The diplomat also stressed how some 27 percent of Filipinos are of ethnic Chinese origin of which many have made significant contributions to the economic development of the Philippines. Mr. Song committed to exert all effort to “fostering and consolidating friendship” among Filipinos and Chinese and promote

socio-economic cooperation. “Local cooperation between China and the Philippines enjoys a promising future, including disaster reduction and prevention, urban transportation, poverty reduction, environmental protection, education, and healthcare,” Mr. Ronghua said, adding that these must be done, “without being disturbed by any factor.” In addition, he said he will serve as a bridge between both Chinese and Filipino businessmen to invest in both countries. Song assured that his

office will provide better services in his consular district. 2015 is the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and the Philippines and the 20th anniversary of the establishment of Chinese Consulate in Cebu. The Philippines and China enjoy the fastest economic growth performances in the world, growing at not less than five percent annually, while global growth averages only three percent. You daily existence is given to you for a great reason T he G ospel of J e sus Christ (October 6, 2015-Tuesday) Mark 12:1827- If a man’s brother die, and leave [his] wife [behind him], and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. And the seven had her, and left no seed:

last of all the woman died also. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? Take note; if we will die all of us will become a pure spirit. Luke 24:39-Behold my hands and my feet, which it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and

bones, as ye see me have. This is the reasons why Jesus expounded the Gospel that “no marital relationship” in the second life. How about those who are married already here on earth? In Isaiah 65:17-18-For, behold, I create “new heavens and a new earth:” and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. No more carnal desire in the second life. No more bearing of a child in heaven. Your ultimate task

in heaven is to pray unceasingly. You will worship God 24 hours and because of this truth; you need to practice this while you have still time to do it by activating your faith on this earth. You are just living temporary and soon; you will go to eternity. Before it happens, have a constant training on how to be saved. Your daily existence is given to you for a great reason for you to do. Do the right things consistently because this is the absolute

key to inherit the kingdom of the living God. From this earth you will be raised to heaven if God can see that you are ready and prepared very well. The reason why you are living too long on this earth is not an accident but he has a purposed for you to repent and change. Despite this setback, however, Coloma still believes Gilas Pilipinas will be able to recover and play better in the 2016 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament to earn a coveted spot in the Summer Games. “Nananalig tayo na sila ay makakapaglakas at makakapagsanay para matamo na ang pagbabalik ng Pilipinas sa 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games,” Coloma told state-run Radyo ng Bayan in an interview. “Kaya, muli, nakikiisa tayo sa pagsigaw ng ating mga mamamayan ng ‘Gilas Pilipinas, PUSO!’” added the Palace official, echoing the national team’s mantra. Coloma said he is proud of Gilas Pilipinas’ performance in the recently concluded FIBA Asia Championship, as the players never backed down in every game even when the odds were against them. “Hindi sila nagpatinag at nagpasindak at nakipagsabayan (sila) sa kanilang mga katunggali sa lahat ng aspekto ng laro,” the Palace official said, adding our players gained the respect of many basketball enthusiasts as a result. “Ipinakita nila ang natatanging uri ng paglalaro ng mga Pilipino na magiting, marubdob, at puno ng puso na siyang dahilan upang umani ng paghanga at respeto mula sa mga pinakamagagaling na koponan sa Asya,” he said. him from the guns of the Bagani. “They told me that these men belong to the group called Bagani, that they come from outside the area, and that their intention was to harm me, specifically by throwing hand grenades at me while I am passing by. This information was not new to me. In fact, I heard it the day before,” Fr. Pops wrote in 2003. Fr. Pops spent 32 years among the lumads. Meanwhile, Senior Deputy Minority Leader Rep. Neri Colmenares also condemned the effects of such closure to lumad children. “In the closure of these lumad schools, it is the children who suffer most. The right to education of the indigenous peoples, especially in Mindanao, have long been neglected by the government; it is one of the causes of their marginalized condition until now,” Colmenares said. “Education is a right. It is laudable that lumad advocates have put up these schools on their own, despite risks and hardships, while the government keeps on cutting corners on the education budget.

It is condemnable that the military is determined to keep the lumad children out of school,” he added. Barangay While Culaman is also the site of a raid conducted last August 27 by the military and the police where at least 13 lumad and peasants, including a mother and his 12-year old son, were summarily arrested. All 13 have since been released from jail after the Regional Trial Court in Bukidnon dropped the charges against them for lack of merit. The two Bayan Muna solons said the continued vilification and red-baiting of the school run by the Mindanao Interfaith Services Foundation, Inc. (MISFI) poses danger to the teachers, students, and other residents. “It is a grave cause of concern that the village chief himself echoes the military’s line. It is dangerous for the students, teachers, and the supporters of this school. We don’t want another Lianga Massacre to happen,” Zarate said, referring to the September 1 massacre of Emerito Samarca, 54, Executive Director of the Alternative Learning Center for Agriculture and Livelihood Development (Alcadev); Dionel Campos, chair of the Malahutayong Pakigbisog Alang sa Sumusunod (MAPASU), a Lumad organization protesting mining operations, land conversions and plantations; and Campos’ cousin, Bello Sinzo. “The closure of Fr. Pops’ school is emblematic of how the state of impunity in Mindanao is heightened more than ever. Four years after his death, his legacy of improving the lives of the lumad people is still under attack,” Zarate added. Meanwhile, Colmenares reiterated his call during the budget deliberations for education officials to be pro-active in protecting the existence of lumad schools. “We call on the Department of Education to enact measures to protect the lumad students and their teachers. It is their mandate to educate lumad people and support efforts for their education,” Rep. Colmenares said. “The military and their misguided minions should cease the red-baiting of lumad schools. The accusations of the military of individuals, organizations, and schools of having links with the NPA are the culprit in the spate of lumad killings in Mindanao,” he said.

Meaning, can either be “true” or, “false.” But the reality is, public high school in this country is still not free. Libre sa inyong mga mata. This is why my good friend, a retired soldier of the Armed Forces and former editor of Gold Star Daily Mr. Ben Villota defines the acronym “PTCA” as “Pirmi Tatay Cuot Amot.” A voucher program for junior high school completers and ESC beneficiaries? Tell it to the marines! How can the education department assured the parents that such program can be realized when it has failed to remove all unnecessary donations in public schools. The third paragraph says it all. SHS is indeed an added burden for parents and students. According to the DepEd that those students who completed the junior high school (JHS) have to complete the two-year SHS before they can be considered graduate in high school. In two years, that student is supposedly graduate of technical and vocational courses (Tech-voc) offered by Tesda-accredited schools––and worked abroad. To graduate under the K+12 basic education program is not an assurance to immediately get a bluecollar, and even white-collar jobs given the many educational barriers. Here’s a fiction: One day, a teacher asked Pedro to spell the word “P-L-A-N-ET.” Pedro spelled it correctly, so the teacher gave him a “very good” grades. Here comes Juan, who is busy using his mobile phone, was called by the teacher to spell the word “G-R-E-E-N.” Juan stood up and replied: “Ma’am, why is Pedro getting very simple questions.” True, indeed. Juan was given the difficult question as the teacher could mean “grain,” “grin” or, could be the color “green.” The correct answer really relies on how the teacher pronounced the question. Whew! ••• And for the parents who are still confused when the K+12 started in this country, here what the DepEd website says:

Tuna canneries get poor scores from page A8

“With our overfished seas, it is necessary that we rank our tuna canneries because they have an important role to play in reversing the decline of our tuna stocks,” said Vince Cinches, Oceans Campaigner for Greenpeace Philippines. “Based on the survey results, almost all of our local canneries are not transparent or do not disclose basic but highly valuable information regarding where they source their tuna and how.” Canneries were sent a survey by Greenpeace last June and were ranked according to questions on traceability, sustainability and equity. The respondents were then ranked along a good/fair/ poor metric. Barely passing and landing first place is Century Canning Corporation, the only company which received a Fair rating. The remaining eight canneries from the Philippines received poor ratings. The canner y ranking came a year after Greenpeace exposed the rampant catching and trading of juvenile “baby” yellowfin and bigeye tuna at the General Santos fishport. These juvenile tuna were found to be less the average size of one meter in length and below the weight limit of 500g set by the Fisheries Administrative Order. Environmentalists and scientists say the continued catching of juvenile tuna contributes to the decline of stocks, not just in the Philippines but globally. Greenpeace believed that the lack of traceability and transparency measures by canneries is a strong indication that companies are using juvenile tuna in their supply chain. In 2013, the total international production of tuna reached 7,318,381 tons. Asia produced more than half at 4,769,508 tons. Thirty-nine percent of Asia’s production came from Indonesian and the Philippine fleets at 1,298,091 tons and 556,843 tons, respectively. Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand are the major producers and exporters of canned tuna. In 2013, world canned tuna exports reached a staggering value at over USD $8.1 billion. Thailand is No. 1 with 32.63% share of the market, Philippines is No. 4 with a 6.88% share, and Indonesia has a 4.62% market share. Greenpeace noted a lack of traceability and transparency in the tuna supply chain

across the region. It is important that market players, along with the seafood and tuna industry, strengthen traceability measures— even set fair labor standards— by developing publiclyavailable sourcing policies which should be strictly implemented. To help drive improvements to the traceability of canned tuna, canneries must ensure that: No tuna enters the cannery unless it has strong traceability back to the vessel and point of capture. There are good processes in place to separate tuna by supplier, species, and fishing method, with a low risk of mixing. All tuna that leaves the factory is properly labelled with the minimum of the full species name (common and scientific), stock, catch method, date of catch and cannery name. auditors. Overall, setting these traceability mechanisms allows the Philippines to further comply with the European Union’s regulations to deter IUU fishing. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Administrative Circular No. 251 has issued the “Traceability System for Fish and Fishery Product” in 2014--one of the requirements for the lifting of the EU’s yellow card sanction on the Philippines last year. “We now have a stronger Fisheries Code in place and just like other stakeholders, these tuna canneries should help support it by being compliant and transparent in their business practices,” added Cinches. “They should be open to third-party audits, aside from those conducted by the government.
