MANILA -- Most Filipinos hear 90.7 Love Radio DJ Nicole Hyala every morning. Do you know she’s also an entrepreneur? Nicole Hyala (or Emmy Gaite Tiñana) is on her third year as franchisee of Peanut World. She told the Philippines News Agency (PNA) she learned about Peanut World through attending a franchise and business expo. She was present during the opening day of the 14th Franchise and Business Expo: Empowering Entrepreneurs, which is slated from Oct. 2-4 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.
Around 300 exhibitors have joined this event organized by the Association of Filipino Franchisers Inc. (AFFI). As an entrepreneur, Nicole Hyala said the challenge is on manpower. “The problem really is maintaining the right people, those who will be honest,” she said. The ‘Tambalan’ co-host also cited lean season as another challenge. Nicole Hyala’s advice for fellow entrepreneurs is to keep their feet on the ground, and to love what they do. To be competitive in the perfume industry, Chung emphasized the importance of innovation. “You have to be innovative with the look, packaging as well as the overall look of the kiosk,” she told PNA, and added that the scent has to be trendy, too. The packaging they offer is a pillow box, which is suitable for gift-giving. At present, Chung’s product offers 24 scents (12 for men, 12 for women). Among the best sellers for women include Blue Sky, Always and Sun Down, while Army, Power, Quest and Refreshing are their best sellers for men. She said their family business actually started as supplier of scents to manufacturers. Then they offered head-to-toe beauty products, until her brother thought of having their own perfume line. Chung cited they plan to expand branches and go global, particularly in Vietnam and China. Currently, Acqua Suisse Perfume has 56 branches (including franchisees and company-owned). On our Philippine history
I HAVE been reading a lot of discrepancies or inconsistencies relative to past events in our country--a matter that involves the books of history. Sometimes the differences depend so much on the skill or knowledge of the authors on past events which perhaps were based on interviews from old folks. I remember interviewing an old woman whose family claimed she was 105 years old. Of course, I cannot disagree with on their allegations, but as I looked at her, she must be about 90 years old only. I am not surprised because some of the authors are modern day Filipinos who also gathered information from history teachers. Many of these teachers derived their ideas from books written by foreigners who came to our country, thus some distortions or failures developed. Always there is disagreement on important matters specially on dates, names and others. What hit me so hard is the fact that history should be the actual happening of events and not based from presumption, speculation or mere ideas of the writers. But what else can we do but

believe in whatever is there for the moment. In return, we pass on to our youngsters what we think is the truth and so on until generations come and the matter remains the same. For instance, some people think General Luna was assassinated on the orders of some Filipino leaders who were in power during the revolution. Others even thought Luna was murdered by his own men. Whatever was the reason, Luna was indeed a fighter during his time and has led his men into great battles against the enemies. The movie entitled Heneral Luna has brought up reasons to doubt to many people. Certainly, every scene is accepted as truth to others and this is where
discrepancies occur. Lately a foreigner wrote something that stirred the minds of people and even created an arena where debates and opposing arguments cropped up. It was about his thought that then Sen. Ninoy Aquino, father of our president, was a national hero. It was true the death of Aquino at the tarmac of the Manila International Airport upon his arrival was presumed the result of political rivalry, but other than that has no bearing on his becoming a national hero. Until this moment, Rizal is our national hero, although it is a fact we have many heroes. Because of numerous controversies on the issue of history, we are giving our youngsters in the high school doubts and confusion regarding the truth of past events. We have only one national hero, we have one national flower, one national anthem, etc. and beyond that has distorted history. The problem is we cannot rewrite history and whatever inconsistencies that surround it will remain as facts.

ISUZU Cagayan de Oro, or known locally as Cebu Southern Motors, Inc., is currently holding an outdoor exhibit of four new van models and one new truck model that were introduced to the Philippine market just this year.
The display, which will run through Friday at Limketkai Parking Lot D, features the following models – NQR (a dropside van), NHR (a rivetless aluminum van), NPR (a rivetless aluminum van) FVM (a wing van) and EXZ (a tractor). According to Isuzu Philippines Corporation product planning manager Robert Carlos, the NQR is designed for construction firms transporting various materials to their sites. It has
passed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2010 standards and is the only one in its class to offer selective catalytic reduction technology with diesel exhaust fluid. This means that under normal highway conditions, the diesel exhaust fluid will regenerate itself automatically to remove particulate matter from the exhaust. Curb to curb, the NQR prides itself as the most maneuverable in its class – and far more nimble

Bayan Muna slams closure of ‘Fr Pops’ school in B’non THE partylist group Bayan Muna has strongly condemned the closure order of a lumad school by a village chief in Kitaotao, Bukidnon. The Fr. Fausto Tentorio Memorial School in Barangay White Culaman in Kitaotao town, Bukidnon was ordered closed last October by Barangay Captain Felipe Cabugnason because of alleged ties with the New People’s Army (NPA). “This is a brazen anachronistic red-tagging tactic made by the military and echoed by local government officials in the pursuit of the government’s already discredited counter-insurgency operations,” said Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate, who hails from Mindanao. “It is a tragedy that the efforts made by some support organizations and the lumads themselves to break free from their marginalization are now being attacked,” Zarate said. DAVAO City--Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, chair of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) in Davao Region urged mayors, barangay chairs and teachers and persons with authority to establish good rapport with the security sector to harmonize relationships in responding to the needs of the people, particularly safety and security. He made the statement during the RPOC 3rd Quarter meeting Wednesday, following an interview where leaders of the Island Garden City of Samal allegedly called for
the soldiers to come amid the abduction in the Ocean View Resort where three foreign nationals and one Filipinas were taken away by eleven armed men and consequently claimed that no one responded. “It takes more than just knowing that the soldiers are there. You have to go out also and talk to them and establish good rapport,” Duterte said. Senior Superintendent Michael John Dubria, chief of the Regional Plans Division of the PRO 11 in his report said strong partnership and collaboration among stakeholders is a strong factor against any untoward incident. “Strengthened, proactive security measures lessen the vulnerability of the public from any and all criminal activities,” he said. This was how Department of Agriculture Assistant Secretary Edilberto De Luna described his department’s effort in implementing farm-to-market road (FMR) projects especially in Surigao del Sur. has been in the news for issues about its indigenous people. ASEC De Luna visited the province and led the turnover of three multi-million DA-implemented FMR projects through the Payapa
at Masaganang Pamayanan (PAMANA) program last September 29. Totaling P166.5 million, the projects includes the concreting of P2.41-kilometer San Roque, Cadangalasan FMR in Sirio Mabog, San Roque, Cadanglasan, Bislig City connecting the boundary of Bunawan amounting to P33.3 million, concreting of the 5.42-kilometer Diatagon Km. 16 (Lianga) connecting Sitio Lagangan,
Caras-an – Tago FMR amounting to P66.6 million, and road opening and concreting of 5.29-kilometer Barangay Lubo, Cantilan – Barangay Panikian, Carrascal FRM amounting to P66.6 million. De Luna emphasized his department’s support for President Aquino’s fivepoint agenda aimed at Surigao del Sur’s economic development, justice and lasting peace.
“Solving the problem on peace matters is not merely using firearms but by giving livelihood within the service areas being cultivated with various agricultural crops such as banana, rice, and root crops due to accessibility of transport to the main highways leading to the nearest market. De Luna made the assurance that the FMRs could withstand various weather conditions to last for longer periods for the benefit of the people. DA-Caraga Regional Director Edna Mabeza urged the residents to avail themselves of DA’s interventions under the banner programs covering rice, corn, highvalue crops and organic agriculture to further oost the agricultural sector in the area. “DA has various projects
and services that you can avail of by coordinating with your city or municipal agriculture officer so we can extend our services such as planting materials. By the time you have enough produce, we can probably put up a processing plant,” Mabeza said. The Payapa at Masaganang Pamayanan is a national government convergence program that extends interventions to isolated, hard-to-reach and conflict-affected communities, ensuring that they are not left behind in and have access to development. LEAN energy, otherwise known Rant and rave as renewable energy, is energy that is generated from natural resources––resources that are 100-percent renewable.
From water and wind to solar power and even hydro energy, there are a number of clean options available. In general, however, many of us are used to the standard gas and oil options; this is understandable as not only are these sources easily available to the masses but generally cheaper too. Fossil fuels If nothing else, the majority of us use gas and oil as a result of habit. We have been heating our homes, powering our cars and getting electricity via these sources for as long as anyone can remember. However, the damage fossil fuels inflict on the environment is untold. Coal, oil and gas release harmful emissions that cause incredible damage to the environment and as a result for many years we have been encouraged to opt for renewable energy resources instead. What can using clean energy do? For those new to it all or wondering just how much impact changing to clean energy can have, keep the following points in mind…
There are many forms of renewable energy. Most of these renewable energies depend in one way or another on sunlight. Wind and hydroelectric power are the direct result of differential heating of the Earth’s surface which leads to air moving about (wind) and precipitation forming as the air is lifted. Solar energy is the direct conversion of sunlight using panels or collectors. Biomass energy is stored sunlight contained in plants. Other renewable energies that do not depend on sunlight are geothermal energy, which is a result of radioactive decay in the crust combined with the original heat of accreting the Earth, and tidal energy, which is a conversion of gravitational energy. Solar. This form of energy relies on the nuclear fusion power from the core of the Sun. Wind Power. The movement of the atmosphere is driven by differences of temperature at the Earth’s surface due to varying temperatures of the Earth’s surface when lit by sunlight. Wind energy can be used to pump water or generate electricity, but requires extensive areal coverage to produce significant amounts of energy.

The economic benefit of creating renewable energy is vast. • Climate change and global warming is an increasingly worrying issue and with fossil fuels releasing a harmful amount of carbon emissions, making the change to clean energy will have an exceedingly positive impact on the environment. With almost no harmful emissions, renewable energy solutions will ensure that no further

damage is done. • One of the main worries of using fossil fuels is that eventually and worryingly now sooner rather than later, these sources will run out. There is an ever growing concern that supplies of coal, oil and gas will begin to run low but with renewable energy this is never an issue. • Increasing prices and
the worry that any political issues between nations may limit the resources available is always a possibility. From restrictions to complete bans there is no guarantee that oil supplies will always be shipped to every country that requires it. In contrast, each country is capable of creating its own renewable energy, what could be more reliable? With each country establishing its own wind power, solar power or hydro power plants, there is an incredible potential for hundreds of jobs to be created. Hydroelectric energy. This form uses the gravitational potential of elevated water that was lifted from the oceans by sunlight. It is not strictly speaking renewable since all reservoirs eventually fill up and require very expensive excavation to become useful again. At this time, most of the available locations for hydroelectric dams are already used in the developed world. Biomass. Biomass is the term for energy from plants. Energy in this form is very commonly used throughout the world. Unfortunately the most popular is the burning of trees for cooking and warmth. This process releases copious amounts of carbon dioxide gases into the atmosphere and is a major contributor to unhealthy air in many areas. Some of the more modern forms of biomass energy are methane generation and production of alcohol for automobile fuel and fueling electric power plants. Hydrogen and fuel cells. These are also not strictly renewable energy resources but are very abundant in availability and are very low in pollution when utilized. Hydrogen can be burned as a fuel, typically in a vehicle, with only water as the combustion product. Geothermal power. Energy left over from the original accretion of the planet and augmented by heat from radioactive decay seeps out slowly everywhere, everyday. In certain areas the geothermal gradient (increase in temperature with depth) is high enough to exploit to generate electricity. This possibility is limited to a few locations on Earth and many technical problems exist that limit its utility. Another form of geothermal energy is Earth energy, a result of the heat storage in the Earth’s surface. Soil everywhere tends to stay at a relatively constant temperature, the yearly average, and can be used with heat pumps to heat a building in winter and cool a building in summer. This form of energy can lessen the need for other power to maintain comfortable temperatures in buildings, but cannot be used to produce electricity. Other forms of energy. The Filipino-Chinese community in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental celebrated the 66th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China with a cultural celebration at the Atrium of the Limketkai Center last Friday, October 1st, in solidarity with other Chinese communities in China and around the world. Known as the National Day in China, the cultural event was preceded by a video presentation of China armed struggle during World War II against Japan. This was followed by the singing of the national anthems of both the Philippines and the PROC and cultural presentations including the Dragon and Lion dances and various other dances and musical numbers presented by students from Kong Hua School and Oro Christian Grace School. For the finale, prominent FilipinoChinese leaders led by Mr. Johnny Lim raised a toast to the founding anniversary of the PROC followed by a community singing of “March of the Volunteers”, also formally known as the National Anthem of the PROC. Tell it to the marines! How can the education department assured the parents that such program can be realized when it has failed to remove all unnecessary donations in public schools. The third paragraph says it all. SHS is indeed an added burden for parents and students. According to the DepEd that those students who completed the junior high school (JHS) have to complete the two-year SHS before they can be considered graduate in high school. In two years, that student is supposedly graduate of technical and vocational courses (Tech-voc) offered by Tesda-accredited schools––and worked abroad. To graduate under the K+12 basic education program is not an assurance to immediately get a bluecollar, and even white-collar jobs given the many educational barriers. Here’s a fiction: One day, a teacher asked Pedro to spell the word “P-L-A-N-ET.” Pedro spelled it correctly, so the teacher gave him a “very good” grades. Here comes Juan, who is busy using his mobile phone, was called by the teacher to spell the word “G-R-E-E-N.” Juan stood up and replied: “Ma’am, why is Pedro getting very simple questions.” True, indeed. Juan was given the difficult question as the teacher could mean “grain,” “grin” or, could be the color “green.” The correct answer really relies on how the teacher pronounced the question. “With our overfished seas, it is necessary that we rank our tuna canneries because they have an important role to play in reversing the decline of our tuna stocks,” said Vince Cinches, Oceans Campaigner for Greenpeace Philippines. “Based on the survey results, almost all of our local canneries are not transparent or do not disclose basic but highly valuable information regarding where they source their tuna and how.” Canneries were sent a survey by Greenpeace last June and were ranked according to questions on traceability, sustainability and equity. The respondents were then ranked along a good/fair/ poor metric. Barely passing and landing first place is Century Canning Corporation, the only company which received a Fair rating. The remaining eight canneries from the Philippines received poor ratings. The canner y ranking came a year after Greenpeace exposed the rampant catching and trading of juvenile “baby” yellowfin and bigeye tuna at the General Santos fishport. These juvenile tuna were found to be less the average size of one meter in length and below the weight limit of 500g set by the Fisheries Administrative Order. Environmentalists and scientists say the continued catching of juvenile tuna contributes to the decline of stocks, not just in the Philippines but globally. Greenpeace believed that the lack of traceability and transparency measures by canneries is a strong indication that companies are using juvenile tuna in their supply chain. In 2013, the total international production of tuna reached 7,318,381 tons. Asia produced more than half at 4,769,508 tons. Thirty-nine percent of Asia’s production came from Indonesian and the Philippine fleets at 1,298,091 tons and 556,843 tons, respectively. Indonesia, Philippines, and Thailand are the major producers and exporters of canned tuna. In 2013, world canned tuna exports reached a staggering value at over USD $8.1 billion. Thailand is No. 1 with 32.63% share of the market, Philippines is No. 4 with a 6.88% share, and Indonesia has a 4.62% market share. Greenpeace noted a lack of traceability and transparency in the tuna supply chain
