Surigao City water shortage worsens

ATER shortage in Surigao City is reportedly worsening, forcing residents to draw from springs and wells.
Rolen Indino, liaison officer of the Surigao Metropolitan Water District (SMWD), is attributing the situation to the long drought occurring in the city and the outlying areas, since April this year. In a telephone interview with MindaNews, Indino stated that water demand went up, as classes started last Monday, prompting the utility company to resort to water rationing. Despite the rationing, the supply remains insuf-
ficient since the city needs at least 19,000 cubic meters each day for the more than 19,000 registered water consumers, he explained. SMWD General Manager Benjamin R. Ensomo Jr. said they have so far supplied 13,000 cubic meters of water to the city residents last week. SMWD gets its water from the 967-hectare Parang-Parang Watershed that only currently produces 100 liters per second, far below the normal capacity of 270
liters per second. A drop of 90 percent could be experienced if drought prolongs, said SMWD Chief Supervising Officer Adriano Lopez. In the regular session of the provincial board last Monday, Board Member Regina Alaan asked the Committee on Public Utilities to physically hear the side of SMWD on the matter, saying she could not fully understand the contents of the letter she earlier received SHORTAGE | page 11
Caraga posts high in teenage pregnancy Grenade explosions By Arjay S. Felicilda, Assistant Editor
WOMEN, who began childbearing at age 15-24 in Caraga Region posted about 40%, according to POPCOM Regional OIC Alexander Makinano. The figure, he said, is contained in the findings of the 2008 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) that identified Caraga as among the regions with the highest percentage of youth pregnancy. “Although several factors
were identified, the role of parents is very critical in this stage of youth development, as this is the time when understanding, guidance and support are needed most,” Mr, Makinano said. As this develops, POPCOM is intensifying its drive against teenage pregnancy all over the region, focusing on the conduct of Parent Education on Adolescent Health and Development trainings, the latest of which was in the city of Butuan.
