The Philippine Popular Music Festival (better known as Philpop) is an annual songwriting competition organized by the Philpop MusicFest Foundation h e a d e d b y c h a i r M a n n y V. Pangilinan and Mr. C as executive director. Inspired by the defunct Metro Manila Pop Music Festival, Philpop is open to professional and amateur composers who are Filipinos or of Filipino descent. The competition aims to celebrate the talent of Filipino songwriting and glorify the contributions of songwriters and composers to the Filipino music industry. “Philpop reminds us how much we all are alike as Filipinos through music as our songwriters-with their lyrics, music and interpretations – bridge the divide of generations; from the glorious past, the sentiments of the present, and the hopes for the future. Mabuhay ang musikang Pilipino!” said Philpop President Ricky Vargas. Philpop was presented by Maynilad and Smart and it is co-presented by Meralco, PLDT, Resorts World Manila and TV5. It is sponsored by Metro Pacific

Investments Corporation, NLEX, PICC and Sun Cellular as well as by the First Pacific Leadership Academy, KBP, and Philex. Among its media partners are Business Mirror, Business World, partners Eastwood Richmonde Hotel, Essensuals Tony and Guy, Megaworld Lifestyle malls, Jinh Monis Salon, and the Universal Records. Behind this prestigious search is the Philpop Music Fest Foundation, Inc. The foundation “sees Filipino music as a cultural treasure and an indication of Filipinos’ identity—something that should not be neglected nor taken for granted.” PhilPop Administrator and Communications Director Patricia Bermudez-Hizon said “The foundation wishes to make music as an instrument for nation building by going around the country, and seeking out for composers who can create beautiful songs.” From 3,000 entries in its maiden year, some 3,383 entries joined the 2013 Philpop and Ms. Bermudez says they expect even more entries to join the next edition following their road show.
