Briefly MICE market DAVAO City -- The tourism sector here remains confident of capturing a significant share of the Meetings, Incentives Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) market even after the city failed to make it as one of the six venues for the Asia Pacific Economic Meetings (APEC) in 2015. “APEC or no APEC there are many opportunities for Davao City,” said Arturo P. Boncato, Department of Tourism (DOT) assistant secretary. The local government, DOT and the tourism private sector signed an agreement on Nov. 13 for a more aggressive MICE campaign for Davao City in 20152016. MICE incentives for 2015-2016 have also been lined up, including arrival assistance resources and discounts from participating shopping malls, among others.

Role of coops DAVAO del Norte -- Provincial Governor Rodolfo P. del Rosario places more importance on strengthening cooperatives than on requiring them to integrate and federate to face the competitive challenge of an open economy. In a press conference dealing with Cooperative concerns, Del Rosario saw no need yet to come up with legal policies at the provincial level to push co-ops to federate though “integration” already had become a growing international and national concern of the sector. Del Rosario understood the necessity for cooperatives to bind themselves together as member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) had already agreed to an open by 2015. But he wanted to give people in the co-op sector “the opportunity to develop their own co-ops until they will realize the need to federate.”

Davao Coal-fired power plant eyes operations by early 2015 DAVAO City – AboitizPower’s 300-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Davao City is eyed to start its commissioning and operations by the first half of 2015, a company official said. “It’s about 90% complete and we’re right on schedule,” said corporate communications manager Wilfredo Rodolfo III during the Kapehan sa SM in Davao City last week. Rodolfo said that within a few months they would be able to testing the plant. “Testing means practically running the plant but not on a continuous basis,” he said.
