HE longstanding plan to connect the power grid of Mindanao with the rest of the country remains unrealized as the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said it is still completing a feasibility study that was originally due in March 2013.

The connection, part of the 2010-2030 Mindanao Energy Plan and originally targeted for implementation by 2018, is intended to allow Mindanao, the Philippine’s second biggest island, to either buy power from or sell to the rest of the country. As of yesterday, Luzon had reserves of 2,428 megawatts (MW) while the Visayas had 224 MW. Mindanao, with the lowest reserves in the

country since 2010, had 134 MW according to the NGCP Web site. NGCP sp okesp ers on Cynthia Perez-Alabanza, who was in the city last week, said the company is now exploring two options for the interconnection after the initial plan was assessed to be unfeasible. “We are trying to exhaust all possible routes,” Ms. linkage/PAGE 11
